Vaas too good for Surrey batsmen

Surrey won the toss and chose to bat but lost captain Rory Hamilton-Browncheaply for just 13 when he smashed Vaas to Stephen Peters, who took a head-highcatch at cover.Davies and veteran Mark Ramprakash then survived the rest of a relatively quietmorning session to reach lunch on 86 for 1. Davies completed a patient half-century off 128 balls in the fifth over of the afternoon as he and Ramprakash added 65 between them for the second wicket. This stand was ended when Ramprakash, after making 30, had his leg stumpuprooted by David Burton, who is playing in the County Championship for thefirst time this season. Davies eventually perished when he edged Northamptonshire captain Andrew Hall’s delivery and Alex Wakely took a low catch in front of him at first slip.Tom Maynard made only seven before playing loosely at Hall and was caughtbehind by Northamptonshire and Ireland wicketkeeper Niall O’Brien. Jason Roy was then given a huge let-off on 12 when Rob Newton dropped a simple chance, which was drilled straight to him at mid-off off the bowling of Hall. The visitors reached tea on 200 for 4 but Roy departed in the fourth over ofthe evening for 31 when he was given what looked a harsh lbw off Burton. James Middlebrook picked up his first wicket when he trapped his fellow spinner, former England international Gareth Batty, lbw for nine.South African De Bruyn hung around to go past 50 off 117 balls but he fell whenhe edged Vaas to O’Brien. Stuart Meaker made just a single before nudging Middlebrook to Hall at slip in the next over, and Vaas then ended the Surrey innings by pinning both ChrisJordan (three) and Tim Linley (16) lbw.Northamptonshire openers Newton and Kyle Coetzer survived until the close withboth of them resuming on one tomorrow.

Era um time de peso. Um bom desafio para nosso time.

A gente tinha o Balão, Luis Augusto.

A vitória surpreendeu a imprensa argentina.

O Norte brasileiro, muitas vezes esquecido dentro do próprio país, entrou no radar do futebol internacional.

West Indies have the potential to make an impact

ESPNcricinfo previews West Indies’ chances in the 2011 World Cup

Vaneisa Baksh17-Feb-2011In the beginning they were the almighty force, but that was 35 years ago and the current West Indies team doesn’t send out ripples of fear ahead of the tenth edition of the World Cup. With some relatively new faces in the squad, familiarity, either with each other or their public, may not have run its fingers through their hair long enough to give them a distinct style (although it should be remembered that Clive Lloyd’s lustrous team of 1975 was at pretty much the same stage when that tournament began). The West Indies are without Brian Lara, who retired after leading the team four years ago, and Chris Gayle, who was rarely enthusiastic about leading the sides, has been replaced as captain by Darren Sammy, who is loud and proud about his passion for the game and the region. The Test team in the making may not yet be something to shout about, but there are some reassuring saplings sprouting in the ranks. Kemar Roach, named man of the series for the three-Test series versus Sri Lanka, invokes something of Malcolm Marshall. Darren Bravo brings Lara to mind. Brendan Nash carries the dependable aura of Larry Gomes (and Shivnarine Chanderpaul) and Adrian Barath, who made a hundred in the warm-up game against Kenya, might bring something of Rohan Kanhai. Add the potential explosiveness of Gayle, Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo, and the there could be some highly entertaining cricket when they take the field for their opening encounter against South Africa on February 24.World Cup pedigreeThe West Indies were the first two champions in 1975 and 1979 and were the finalists when India won it in 1983. They have slid down the pecking order since then, a solitary semi-final place in 1996 being the highlight of subsequent campaigns.Recent formWest Indies have not had any dramatic shifts in form for more than a decade. In the last few months, their biggest series has been a trip to Sri Lanka under new captain Sammy. The Test series ended damply at 0-0 as rain washed out practically all the matches, but there were encouraging signs as Gayle made a triple hundred in the First Test, Darren Bravo made a string of half-centuries, and Roach was the leading wicket-taker. However, they lost the rescheduled one-day series 2-0, with first game being washed out as rain continued to plague them.PredictionIn the first round of matches, West Indies play South Africa, the Netherlands, Bangladesh, Ireland, England and India. Not to underestimate their opponents (early upsets are part of the World Cup thrill; remember Ireland?), but they should hold their own against half of those teams. That said, with India, South Africa and England amongst the favourites to win the cup, the West Indies will be happy to make it to the knockout stage.WatchabilityThe team is an intriguing blend of potential and power. Gayle can be stupendous when he gets going; Pollard is pure, powerful entertainment and Dwayne Bravo can, some of the time, be all things on a cricket field. Add to that the fresh talent found in Darren Bravo, Barath and Roach, the dependability of Chanderpaul, and the hunger of a recalled Ramnaresh Sarwan, and you have a team worth staying up all night for.Key playersKemar Roach does not have much international experience, but whenever he’s stepped out on the field, he has attracted attention. He made his Test debut in July 2009 in a ramshackle series with Bangladesh marred by a players’ strike, and emerged as the leading wicket-taker of the series, a feat he repeated against Sri Lanka. Roach does many delightful things with the ball and he has demonstrated an aggressiveness that harks back to an Ambrose era. Unfortunately, in the continued absence of Fidel Edwards and Jerome Taylor, he has been hampered by a lack of support at the other end, and the team has not operated at full throttle with its bowlers for some time now,Six years younger than his brother Dwayne, Darren Bravo’s family loves to boast that he is the most talented of the brood. Darren has startled many onlookers by his physical resemblance to his cousin Lara, which was exacerbated by his technique and stance bearing an uncanny likeness as well. A genuine find for the West Indies, Darren is full of form, style, confidence and a sense of the different demands of each phase of play. Despite his youth, has a mature head on his shoulders and will add solidity to the batting along with Chanderpaul. If one had to characterise West Indies cricket over the past 15 years or so, Chris Gayle would be the epitome of its nature. He appears entirely indifferent to discipline and authority, is languid in his movements and not afraid to bare his teeth at anyone who dares to challenge him (especially if it comes from officialdom, like the WICB). Yet he obviously has a zest for life and cricket, and once it is ignited, he can be brilliant, as he showed in making 333 against Sri Lanka. Twenty20 has been his playground for a while, long enough for his name as an entertainment brand to be bigger than a retainer contract with the West Indies board. So he knows what it is like to put on a good show. If he can give the team the kind of starts he is capable of producing, making the knockout stage will become a lot easier.

Rangers had a howler with Michael Ball

Rangers chief Ross Wilson brought a big name to Ibrox in January as he secured a deal to sign Aaron Ramsey on loan until the end of the season.

The Wales international has played at the top level in Europe for the majority of his career and his arrival in Glasgow was met with fanfare as supporters got excited at the prospect of seeing him play for the club.

However, he is not the first prestigious name to come through the door for the Light Blues as Rangers have splashed the cash on signings in the past.

One significant deal that ended up going badly for the club was the addition of Michael Ball from Premier League side Everton. The England international joined Alex McLeish’s side in 2001 for a fee Transfermarkt claim to be a whopping £8.7m.

Ball, unfortunately, failed to live up to his price tag after struggling badly with injuries. He missed 18 months after damaging his knee early on in his Gers career and was then unable to recapture his best form in the years to come.

Towards the end of his time at Ibrox, he came to a strange agreement with the club as Sir David Murray had to pay another £500k to Everton if he played one more game and was unwilling to front all of the cash. Ball explained:

“I remember it was a match at Ibrox when the gaffer Alex McLeish said the chairman wanted to see me – that’s when he put the idea to me.

“Alex asked how it went and I was still a little bit shocked about what had just happened.

“I had agreed to pay £4000 every time I played so they could pay Everton.

“I wasn’t sure if I had got it right. We had a bit of a chuckle about it and later that day I came on as a sub with a few minutes left.

“I remember thinking ‘that’s just cost me four grand’!”

Whilst this decision showed that the left-back was desperate to play for Rangers and was fighting to make himself a success at Ibrox, Ball’s move to the club simply did not work out in the end.

Eventually, he left the Gers in the summer of 2005 to join PSV for a fee Transfermarkt claim to be £495k. This is slightly less than the fee Murray was trying to avoid paying Everton and a gigantic loss on the £8.78m he was reportedly signed for.

Therefore, it was a howler from McLeish and Murray as they endured a torrid few years that ended up with the club losing a significant amount of money.

Ireland out of finals race after draw

Zimbabwe took second place on the Intercontinental Cup points table after earning nine points in a high-scoring draw based on a first-innings lead against Ireland

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Sep-2010
Scorecard
Zimbabwe took second place on the Intercontinental Cup table after earning nine points in a high-scoring draw based on a first-innings lead against Ireland. They are now ahead of Scotland, who refused to tour Zimbabwe for their scheduled Intercontinental Cup clash in October. Should the two teams not play each other, Zimbabwe, ahead on points, are likely to qualify for the final in Dubai in November against table-toppers Afghanistan. Zimbabwe Cricket ruled out the possibility of a neutral host for the Scotland fixture but the ICC is yet to take a call on the matter. Zimbabwe’s lead also meant Ireland were knocked out of the race for the final; they are now fourth.A draw looked seemingly inevitable at the end of the third day as Zimbabwe batsmen Sean Williams and Keith Dabengwa smashed centuries to help their team overhaul Ireland’s 465. The Zimbabwe lower order, led by Forster Mutizwa’s unbeaten 67, extended Zimbabwe’s total to 590 on the fourth day. Ireland seamers Kevin O’Brien and Trent Johnston shared eight wickets but, by then, their team was virtually out of contention.Ireland did bat 54 overs on the final day and erased their deficit with captain William Porterfield making an unbeaten 66, laced with 11 fours. But the game ended in disappointment for his side which finished with two wins, a loss and three draws in the competition.

Newcastle eyeing up Djordje Mihailovic

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their interest in CF Montreal’s Djordje Mihailovic.

What’s the talk?

According to 1000Cuorirossoblu, PIF are plotting a swoop for the attacking midfielder at the end of the season, alongside a number of other clubs.

The report claims that Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Leverkusen and Leeds are also keen on the gem, whose contract with the MLS side expires in December 2023.

Huge Almiron upgrade

Newcastle must secure a deal to sign Mihailovic as he would be a huge upgrade on Miguel Almiron heading into the 2022/23 campaign.

In 26 Premier League appearances, Almiron has scored one goal and provided one assist for the Toon. Whilst his strike against Crystal Palace earlier this month was a terrific finish and one for the fans to enjoy at St. James’ Park, he has not been able to produce that level of quality on a consistent basis and his lack of impact in the final third is a cause for concern.

Two goal contributions in 15 league starts is a dismal return from a winger, particularly after he managed five (four goals and one assist) in 28 starts last season (34 appearances). He has not been a reliable player for the Magpies in the final third and that is why the club should be looking to sign Mihailovic to take his place in the team.

The Montreal midfielder has had a sensational start to 2022 as he has racked up four goals and two assists in eight appearances. He has averaged a sublime SofaScore rating of 7.61 as he has created 2.5 chances per game, showing that he can consistently deliver at the top end of the pitch.

This comes after he managed four goals and 14 assists in 32 starts in 2021. In the 2020/21 campaign, he created a whopping 18 ‘big chances’ and made 2.3 key passes per game and these statistics suggest that he can be a creative force for the Magpies – with journalist Chris Smith dubbing him a “gorgeous passer”.

He can, therefore, be a big upgrade on the Paraguay international if he is able to translate his form for Montreal over to the Premier League next season.

The American dynamo, who has 40 MLS goals and assists combined in his career, is also five years younger than Almiron and has scope to develop further over the years. Howe can work with him on the training pitch to hone his skills and this means that he can be a player for the short and long-term future of the club.

Everton transfer news on van de Beek

Fabrizio Romano has now revealed some significant Everton transfer news involving Donny van de Beek.

The Lowdown: van de Beek signs

The Goodison Park faithful confirmed the signing of van de Beek on loan from Manchester United on Transfer Deadline Day, in where they also signed Dele Alli on a permanent deal from Tottenham Hotspur.

They also confirmed the appointment of Frank Lampard as their new manager, in what was a very exciting day indeed for fans of the Merseyside club.

The Latest: No buy option

As per Italian football journalist and transfer expert Romano, the Toffees were ‘trying’ to insert a buy option when they loaned in van de Beek on deadline day, but Man Utd did not want one:

“Everton were trying to include a buy option clause – Man United said no way.”

The Verdict: Shame

It is a shame that the Toffees could not get a buy option for van de Beek, as he is certainly a player that can help them not just this season, but in the future as well.

There is no doubt that the Netherlands international has talent despite his poor spell at United, as he showed on many occasions at Ajax, scoring no fewer than 41 goals and making a further 34 assists in 175 games in total over all competitions from the middle of the park (Transfermarkt).

However, he has simply not been utilised enough at Old Trafford, and so the Red Devils have not seen what he is capable of.

Nonetheless, a buy option would have ideal for the Blues, and should van de Beek perform well from now until the end of the campaign, perhaps that is something they will look to revisit in the summer.
