Aston Villa: Fans react to Emi Martinez and Emi Buendia update

Many Aston Villa fans have been angered on Twitter following news that Emiliano Buendia and Emiliano Martinez will miss their clash against Chelsea on 11 September due to quarantine legislation as a result of making themselves available for international duty with Argentina [avfc.co.uk].

In the difficulty which surrounds travelling around the world during a global pandemic, the duo have reached a compromise with their club. Both players will head to South America to participate in World Cup qualifying fixtures against Venezuela and Brazil, although they will not take part in Argentina’s following match against Bolivia [avfc.co.uk].

They will both miss the Villains’ trip to Stamford Bridge on 11 September due to quarantine, before being available for selection again on 18 September at home to Everton.

In light of this news, plenty of Aston Villa fans took to Twitter to vent their fury at the duo’s impending absence for the trip to west London.

Portsmouth will not make any free signings

Danny Cowley has provided an update on Portsmouth’s transfer business regarding the possibility of free agent signings.

What’s the talk?

The Pompey manager has confirmed that the club will not be dipping into the free agent market following the end of the summer transfer window.

The f0rmer Huddersfield boss reportedly failed in his efforts to land a striker and centre-back cover before the window slammed shut, but he has revealed that there is no money left to make any further additions.

He told The News: “There is nothing left in the budget, so they’ll be no free agents.

“We are where we are. We’re coming out of a pandemic, we’ve bought the training ground and spent all that money on Fratton Park. We’ve got good owners, haven’t we. Come on.” Frustration

This update from Cowley will frustrate supporters for a number of reasons, despite it being an understandable situation for the club. First and foremost, it is difficult for anyone to be angry at the owners as they should not be risking the financial future of the club to bolster the team.

They are operating within a budget and have purchased the training ground, whilst also improving Fratton Park, which then has an impact on the transfer business as it takes money away to other sectors. In that sense, supporters should be delighted that their club is being run responsibly as they know better than most what can happen when football teams are mismanaged financially.

However, that might not allay the frustration from fans over the squad now being short in a couple of positions. Portsmouth only have three natural senior centre-backs, which has left Cowley with limited options in his back four. They are also now vulnerable if injuries hit Clark Robertson and Sean Raggett, as it could leave a youth team player being chucked in or someone else coming in out of position, which could then impact their League One form.

In terms of strikers, Cowley has John Marquis, Ellis Harrison and George Hirst as his over-21 options. The News revealed that he wanted to bring in a new centre-forward to improve the quality of the squad –  Marquis has scored once in five League One matches, with none of the other strikers at the club on the scoresheet as of yet.

This could be why the head coach wanted another number nine, with the team seemingly lacking an in-form goalscorer. Therefore, Pompey fans may well be frustrated that he was unable to bring in the striker Cowley wanted, as the lack of a consistent frontman could dampen their chances of pushing up the League One table and chasing promotion – goals win games!

Sheff Wed want new deal for Dominic Iorfa

Sheffield Wednesday will reportedly attempt to tie Dominic Iorfa down to a new deal this summer, as they look to extend his stay at Hillsborough.

The Lowdown: Iorfa shines for Sheff Wed

The Owls have not have experienced the happiest time in their history recently, but Iorfa has been one of the few positives to emerge.

The 26-year-old has shone at centre-back for Wednesday, making 71 appearances to date and scoring five goals for good measure.

Iorfa was voted the club’s Player of the Year in 2019/20, highlighting how much of an influence he has had since arriving from Wolves in 2019.

The Latest: Owls keen to offer new deal

According to The Sheffield Star, Wednesday are keen on the idea of offering Irofa a new deal, with his current contract expiring next summer.

That means they could lose him on a free transfer at that point, so the club want to alleviate that issue. An offer could arrive in the ‘coming weeks’.

The Verdict: Hugely important figure

Iorfa is arguably one of Darren Moore’s most important players this season, given his stature at centre-back and the fact that his defensive partner Sam Hutchinson is an often injury-prone figure.

Having extended Josh Windass’ stay at Hillsborough, this would be another huge positive, enhancing Wednesday’s chances of success in the future.

Iorfa enjoyed an 89.1 percent pass completion rate in the 0-0 draw at Charlton Athletic last Saturday, highlighting his quality in possession – he is more than just a colossal 6 foot 4 defender.

Harmison basks in Durham's glory

Not even a cracked wrist, courtesy of a Geraint Jones cut shot, could deny Steve Harmison his moment of glory with Durham

Not even a cracked wrist, courtesy of a Geraint Jones cut shot, could deny Steve Harmison his moment of glory with the team that has nurtured him since he launched his career as a teenager in 1996. Regardless of his numerous successes in international cricket down the years, home is always where the heart has been for Harmison, and afterwards he said that the pride that he took in Durham’s maiden County Championship triumph was second only to the Ashes win in 2005.”It’s unbelievable,” said Harmison. “We’ve only had 16 years as a first-class county, and there are some young lads up there who don’t realise what sort of achievement they’ve just had. I’m just so pleased for everyone connected with Durham Cricket Club and cricket in the North-East – it’s a fantastic achievement. You can’t underestimate what it means from where we’ve come.”The Ashes takes some beating, because of the nature of that series win, but behind that, I don’t think there is a prouder moment in my career,” said Harmison. Last month he got his international career back on track in impressive fashion against South Africa, but he was quick to acknowledge that that could never have happened without the support of his club, who restored his morale when it was at rock-bottom after a disastrous tour of New Zealand, and slowly but surely coaxed him back to full match fitness. In fact, such was Harmison’s gratitude, he claimed that his recall to England’s one-day squad had only happened on the condition he was allowed to carry on playing for his county throughout the season. Whereas key England players such as Andrew Flintoff have been made to sit out the final rounds of the Championship, Harmison remained an integral performer for Durham, and has now finished with 60 wickets at 22.66.”I was always coming back here, never any question,” said Harmison. “That was something that was agreed in the 24 hours I had to make my mind up whether I wanted to play in the one-dayers. I said I would come back with a couple of conditions, one of them being that I had to come back and play for Durham. After New Zealand, I wasn’t in the greatest of positions, but now with Durham’s help, I’m back in the Test team, back in the one-day team, and now we’ve won the Championship.”Durham have now become the 15th county to win the game’s oldest and most prestigious domestic competition. Somerset, Northamptonshire and Gloucestershire – all of whom have been competing for over a century – are still waiting for their first titles. Having entered the fray in 1992, with a team of veterans including David Graveney and a soon-to-be-retired Ian Botham, Durham spent the best part of a decade as the competition’s whipping boys. But last season they announced their coming-of-age by winning the FP Trophy, their first piece of silverware, and now there is no looking back.”This is my 12th season with Durham, and I’ve probably had more bad years than good years,” said Harmison. “So this is just a great feeling, and it’ll be massive in the North-East. There is a big cricket following up there. Some young lads up there [on the balcony] might say they didn’t get as many runs as they’d like, or as many wickets, but they’ve contributed to the Championship, and that is an unbelievable achievement. I don’t think they realise what that means to this county.”Fittingly, it was Harmison himself who delivered the knock-out blows on the final morning against Kent at Canterbury. Bowling with his left arm in a cast, he uprooted James Tredwell’s off stump, before removing Robbie Joseph and Martin Saggers with consecutive deliveries, to cue pandemonium among his team-mates. Harmison was jubilantly bundled to the ground beneath a sea of bodies – which may not have been the best treatment for a man with a broken arm, but it was the most heart-felt.”I got out of the way very, very quickly!” said Harmison. “There were lots of big lads coming at me, but I think they soon realised who was at the bottom of the pile. I’ve cracked a bone in my wrist, but if you’re going to have a crack it’s the one you want. It’s in the middle of the bone, and it’ll heal quickly – two weeks in a cast and I’ll be fine. I’m just worried about my golf, because I’ve got three weeks off playing cricket!”Harmison added that he has no concerns about being fit for the Stanford match in November, assuming that contest goes ahead as planned, and was looking ahead with renewed excitement to an England itinerary that will take in trips to India and West Indies before culminating with an Ashes summer next year.”I won’t be playing much for Durham next year, which is why I wanted to come back now,” said Harmison. “I recognised how much they’ve helped me since I came back from New Zealand, so I couldn’t turn my back on them.”

Everton offer Gomes in Nunes swap

Many Everton fans have been left unhappy as a transfer update emerged on Matheus Nunes.

As per A Bola, the Goodison Park faithful have had a proposed swap deal involving Andre Gomes rejected by Sporting Lisbon, as manager Ruben Amorim was not keen on the offer.

Playing in 31 games in Liga NOS in the 2020/21 term, scoring three goals and supplying a further two assists (Transfermarkt), Nunes was a key player in Sporting’s first domestic title win since 2002.

On the other hand, Gomes came under a lot of criticism from some supporters of the Merseyside club for some of his poor performances over the course of last season, and so a swap deal may have suited the Toffees going into the new campaign.

Nonetheless, it looks as if Rafa Benitez’s team will have to try a different approach if they are to sign Nunes.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Scott Dann departure

Crystal Palace announced the departure of defender Scott Dann on Thursday morning.

And, as to be expected, a number of Palace fans were quick to share their thoughts on the exit news on social media.

Dann, who made the move to Selhurst Park back in 2014, was one of 11 senior Palace players who were out of contract at the beginning of July.

The likes of Joel Ward and Nathaniel Clyne have both earned new deals under Patrick Vieira, however, Dann is the latest player to have his exit confirmed.

The 34-year-old made a total of 181 appearances for the Eagles, 15 of which came under Roy Hodgson last season.

Palace have brought in two centre-backs in Marc Guehi and Joachim Andersen this summer, with Dann unable to earn himself a new deal under those conditions.

Palace fans react

The club posted the news regarding the fan favourite on their official Twitter page. These Palace supporters were all upset, with one ‘gutted’ at the centre-back’s departure.

Indian team sponsor cancels contract

India’s team sponsor cancelled their lucrative contract on Saturday evening after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was forced to drop their logo during the ICC Champions Trophy

CricInfo14-Sep-2002India’s team sponsor cancelled their lucrative contract on Saturday evening after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was forced to drop their logo during the ICC Champions Trophy.India had been barred from displaying the Sahara India Group logo on the players’ clothing because of a product conflict with South African Airlines (SAA), one of the tournament’s official sponsors. The Sahara group has interests in businesses ranging from financial services to media, including a national airline. The sponsorship deal with the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) was worth a massive USD $ 13.6 million. The contract was due to run until 2004.The International Cricket Council (ICC) had initially approved a proposed compromise solution under which their sponsor’s logo would have been modified by replacing the name of Sahara with that of its owner, Subrata. But SAA protested, saying green and orange strokes in the logo made it too similar to the Sahara brand, and the ICC changed its decision.Sahara’s decision was conveyed to the media on Saturday evening by PerceptProfile, the companies PR agency.”This is an unreasonable, irrational and offensive condition, which is completely against national pride,” said Sahara chairman Subrata Roy.The BCCI president, Jagmohan Dalmiya, told the media that the decision of the Sahara group to withdraw its sponsorship was “unfortunate”.The ICC sold its exclusive marketing and broadcasting rights to the GlobalCricket Corporation (GCC) for USD $ 550 million in 2000.India is not the first country to face a team sponsorship clash with an official ICC sponsor since the signing of that agreement – Sri Lanka nearly lost a USD $ 3 million deal with Dilmah Tea earlier in the year because of a product clash with Pepsi’s iced tea brand.

Everton transfer update on Kurt Zouma

Many Everton fans have been left gushing as a transfer update emerged on Kurt Zouma.

As per Telefoot journalist Julien Maynard, the defender is expected to leave Chelsea in the summer transfer window, and Everton, Tottenham and AS Roma are all interested in his signature.

Zouma has already declined a move to Wolves, meaning that the Merseyside club still have a chance to secure his services.

The France international enjoyed a fruitful spell while on loan at the Toffees in 2018/19, winning 4.8 of his duels per game in the Premier League, while also averaging 3.8 clearances, 1.7 interceptions and one tackle per match, keeping 10 clean sheets in the process (Sofascore).

A return to Goodison Park could well be a match made in heaven under former Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez.

England home by three wickets in murky Headingley thriller

England seem to bat better in the dark

Ralph Dellor02-Jul-2002England seem to bat better in the dark. To a list that already included Karachi during the winter before last and Old Trafford a couple of weeks ago can be added Headingley. It was 7.41 in distinctly murky conditions that Darren Gough marked his return to international cricket by hitting the winning runs with just four balls to spare as England overcame the imposing total set by a Sri Lankan team inspired by a Sanath Jayasuriya hundred. The match started four hours late because of heavy showers throughout the morning and was restricted to a mere 32 overs a side. That did not stop the Sri Lankans from reaching a total of 240 for seven with Jayasuria leading the way with an innings of 112 from 87 balls with five sixes and nine fours. For a man who has been worried about his form, it was a marvellous transformation but one that was considerably aided by some sub-standard bowling that wilted in the face of the onslaught.Gough announced that he was back in international cricket with a wicket from the first ball of his second over when Romesh Kaluwitharana skied a drive into the covers. It was something of an unnecessary shot, for there were already 26 runs on the board as a result of poor Matthew Hoggard going for 19 off the second over of the innings. That included three wides as he strove to control the swing that took the ball either down the leg side or onto the middle of Jayasuriya’s bat.The second wicket partnership with Marvan Atapattu added 92 from just 86 balls, with Atapattu scoring just 18 of them. The Sri Lankan captain went to his fifty from 42 balls, taking just a further 36 to reach his twelfth one-day international hundred. It was an innings that contained savage strokeplay, but questions have to be asked about the wisdom of bowling so much on his legs. It was not long before it was found that he could play in that area, but England’s bowlers persisted in testing him out.No other batsman offered substantial support, but then it could be said that he did not need support. He was eventually fifth out with the score on 201 in the 28th over when he skied Hoggard to long on to give the bowler some consolation amid the carnage. Upul Chandana came closest to maintaining the momentum with 30 runs from 13 balls before he fell lbw to Gough.Gough then bowled Chaminda Vaas to make sure he had respectable figures. Andrew Flintoff’s two for 18 off seven overs showed what could be done by avoiding the leg side and keeping to a length, but the other bowling figures do not bear close examination from an English point of view.England’s reply got off to the worst possible start when Nick Knight gave a return catch to Vaas in the first over of the innings, but Ronnie Irani was promoted to three in the order and began stroking the ball around with authority. He and Marcus Trescothick were going shot for shot as they put on 68 in 51 balls.Irani went for one big drive too many to sky the ball into the covers having hit five fours in his 27, but Flintoff was an able and willing replacement when it came to keeping the momentum going. He perished at deep mid-wicket for 20 having faced only 13 balls – eleven more than Nasser Hussain who hooked to deep square leg. When Kumar Sangakkara’s throw from deep square leg accounted for Graham Thorpe with the aid of the third umpire and several replays, it appeared that England’s challenge was fading as quickly as the light. However, Paul Collingwood played with verve to pick up the baton once Trescothick’s innings had come to an end. After hitting 11 fours in his 60 ball 82, he flicked Jayasuriya to long on.Alec Stewart joined him with a close finish in prospect but the light fading and the required rate rising. If Collingwood got the partnership going, Stewart was a willing accomplice as he ran and scampered and unleashed some searing shots to the boundary. There were five of those and a straight six in his 31 ball innings that produced a priceless 38 runs.He lost Collingwood when just four runs were required, allowing Gough to come in on his home ground. Ever the man for a bit of drama, Gough saw the target come one run closer thanks to a wide from Dilhara Fernando, got a couple of snorters, but took a single off the last ball to keep the strike. There was a hit and a miss off the first ball of the final over before Gough calmly lifted Nuwan Zoysa over the covers for the two runs that took England through to their win and, in all probability, the final at Lord’s on July 13th.
