Pollock and Carter help Warwickshire to the Benson & Hedges Cup final

K Lane10-Jun-2002The Benson & Hedges Cup semi-finals and the Norwich Union League matches played this week were both affected by the weather, with one B&H semi-final having to use the reserve day and a full Norwich Union round being washed out.Allan Donald after arriving back from South Africa where he, Shaun Pollock and Bob Woolmer attended the Cronje funeral, was on the losing side for Worcestershire as Essex ran away with the game. Set to make 263 for the win, Donald ending on 0/54, the match was suspended on day one with Worcestershire on 26/4. They never recovered from this eventually being bowled out for 124 as the game resumed the following day. Donald managed 10 with the bat.Pollock and Neil Carter played a major part in a nail biter in Warwickshire one wicket win over Lancashire. Pollock and Carter being trusted with the new ball returned figures of 4/27 and 3/43 respectively as Lancashire put on 211/9 in their 50 overs. Pollock scored 22 but it was Carter who struck his first and last ball of the match for four to register the win.The final will be played between Essex and Warwickshire at Lords on 22 June 2002.The Norwich Union round that was completed saw Donald on the winning side as he made his debut this English season taking 2/27 as Worcestershire beat Yorkshire.Pollock 3/10 and Carter 5/31 forming a good opening partnership saw Worcestershire beat Durham with both players contributing with the bat as well. Cater scoring 24 and Pollock ending on 29 not out.Sussex beat a high riding Essex with Mark Davis scoring three and taking 3/40.Nottinghamshire went down to Kent with the South Africans of Boje 2/34, Kevin Pieterson 2/29 and Greg Smith 1/26 taking the only Kent wickets to fall. A 25 for Boje, a 24 for Pieterson and a duck from Smith was not enough to ensure a win.Hampshire needing 2 runs in the last over secured a win against Middlesex with Neil Johnson 26 and 2/35 and Pothas 39 not out helping their team to the win. Sven Koenig in good form for Middlesex this season only managed 24 with the bat.

Spurs strike Marcus Edwards agreement

Tottenham Hotspur have agreed to temporarily waive their Marcus Edwards’ sell-on clause, according to a report from Portuguese newspaper A Bola (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

Edwards made only one senior appearance for Spurs – a 15-minute EFL Cup runout – before leaving to join Vitoria Guimaraes in 2019.

Spurs inserted a 50% sell-on clause into the deal for the 22-year-old winger, who made 33 Liga NOS appearances last season, 21 of which were starts. He scored three goals, provided one assist and averaged 2.2 successful dribbles per game (via WhoScored).

Edwards is currently valued at £9m by Transfermarkt, having been rated as low as £2.88m in April 2020.

The latest

Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon are said to have opened talks with Vitoria over signing Edwards, having been impressed by his performances, but Tottenham’s clause has proven to be a stumbling block in their negotiations.

As a result, the London outfit have struck an agreement with Sporting. They will instead bank 50% of the transfer fee whenever Edwards leaves Lisbon further down the line.

The verdict

Although Spurs could miss out on a decent cash injection this summer by delaying the receipt of the sell-on fee, you could argue that this is a shrewd move from Daniel Levy, the club’s chairman and transfer negotiator.

Edwards’ value is only rising, and the proposed move to Sporting should inflate it even further. If he lives up to the potential he’s showing, Spurs’ eventual intake could easily more than double.

At that point, it would look a very smart decision indeed to forego the sell-on payment for now and instead reap it whenever he moves on from Sporting.

In other news, this manager is open to the Spurs job.

Celtic: Altay SK want Boli Bolingoli

Newly-promoted Turkish club Altay SK want to sign Celtic left-back Boli Bolingoli this summer, according to The Scottish Sun.

The Lowdown: Bolingoli’s Parkhead career

Bolingoli was signed by Neil Lennon in July 2019 from Rapid Vienna in a deal worth £3m but the 25-year-old has only made 29 appearances for the Hoops almost two years on from his arrival in Glasgow and spent the majority of the previous campaign on loan at Istanbul Basaksehir.

The Turkish capital club had the option to sign the Belgian on a permanent basis, but they decided against doing so.

Bolingoli, who Alan Hutton described as ‘athletic’, still has two years remaining on his current Celtic contract, but it seems as if he could be joining another club in Turkey.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-7/” title=”Celtic updates” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Altay SK links

The Scottish Sun shared a transfer story regarding Bolingoli on Saturday. They claimed that Altay, who were recently promoted to the Turkish Super Lig for the first time in 18 years, want to sign the Celtic left-back.

Altay’s new president Ozgur Ekmekcioglu has promised to spend ahead of the club’s top-flight return and wants Bolingoli as their first high-profile signing of the summer.

The Verdict: Postecoglou needs to have the final say

Bolingoli spent last season away from Glasgow, so on that basis, you could expect that he is surplus to requirements in Scotland. However, with new manager Ange Postecoglou now in place, surely it would make sense for the Australian to have the final say on the full-back’s future.

Celtic have just Greg Taylor and Bolingoli as left-back options at this moment in time, with Diego Laxalt’s loan coming to an end. Therefore, should Postecoglou grant a permanent Parkhead exit for Bolingoli, you’d expect he’d be seeking a replacement to rival Taylor for the upcoming season.

Aaron Hickey has been linked with a move to Scotland in recent weeks, so perhaps the Hoops would firm up their interest in the teenage left-back if Bolingoli leaves.

Somerset Board Eleven game washed out at Exmouth

The Somerset Board Eleven endured the frustrations of the English weather yesterday, when they travelled to Exmouth only to be greeted by a downpour that led to their 38 County match against Devon being abandoned without a ball being bowled

Richard Walsh27-May-2002The Somerset Board Eleven endured the frustrations of the English weather yesterday, when they travelled to Exmouth only to be greeted by a downpour that led to their 38 County match against Devon being abandoned without a ball being bowled. The game had originally been scheduled to take place at Taunton, but in the light of the heavy rain that had fallen at the County Ground, on Friday it was switched to Exmouth because the south coast seemed to have missed out on the storms. In the end the Somerset Board players had a wasted journey, and they had to settle for a point from the washed out game.Somerset Board Eleven manager Peter Robinson told me this morning: "We were disappointed not to play, especially as we had strengthened our team with Joe Tucker and Pete Trego, and we would have been playing against a number of former Somerset players, including Ian Bishop, Gareth Townsend and of course Peter Roebuck."`Robbo’ continued: "Now it all depends on our last two games against Dorset at Dean Park on June 9th and then against Cornwall at North Perrott a week later. We need to win both of those games to give ourselves a chance of going through."

Southampton linked with Tom Davies

Southampton have recently been linked with Everton midfielder Tom Davies recently but he would be a poor addition to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, Southampton have reignited their interest in the 22-year-old midfielder, having failed to sign him last year, and they will move for him this summer if they are given any encouragement by Everton.

The report suggests that Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti is a big fan of the England U21 international, which suggests that the Toffees would not be willing to part ways with the youngster for less than his current market value of £14.4m.

Would he be a good signing?

Davies’ performances in recent seasons do little to suggest that he would be a good signing at Southampton this summer.

This season saw the Englishman make 25 appearances in the Premier League, in which he failed to contribute a single goal or assist, averaging a woeful 6.46 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

This would rank him as the 17th-best performer in Everton’s side this season, whereas if he had produced the same level of performance at St Mary’s, he would’ve been ranked as the 15th-best player this season.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

Considering Hasenhuttl has suggested that Southampton will target players under £10m this summer, it is difficult to see the Austrian shelling out more than that on a player who would surely struggle to oust Oriol Romeu and James Ward-Prowse in the Saints midfield.

Earlier in the season, Sky Sports journalist Alan Myers was full of praise for Davies, saying:

“Tom Davies has been a player who’s increased performance-wise incredibly over the last few months. He’s had a lot of stick from fans and other areas, and he’s come back really well and is playing really well, so I’m glad to see him back.”

However, it is difficult to see how he would be an improvement on the options currently available to Hasenhuttl in midfield and considering how much he would likely cost, this is a transfer that the Austrian should definitely avoid this summer.

And, in other news… Hasenhuttl could evolve his Saints attack with swoop for “unbelievable” star

Pakistan have a fair chance to win the short series

Article: Vol 1 of column by Mudassar Nazar on Pakistan in England

A test match at Lord’s is always a special affair. One can bump into at least a hundred former test cricketers from all over the world. An experience in itself It is the headquarters of world cricket in the real sense!I am a little concerned about the Pakistan team going into this test match. They’ve had very limited match practice on this tour, and a couple of important players are injured or reportedly not match fit. Moreover, we missed out on a golden opportunity in the last game against Kent by not pulling out Saeed Anwar after he had completed his century, so that Faisal Iqbal and Younis Khan could gain further experience of English conditions by spending some time at the crease. We are playing two tests in England this summer and one of the venues happens to be Old Trafford in Manchester. Having lived only a few miles down the road from Old Trafford for the past 26 years, I can claim to be an authority on Manchester’s inclement weather. In fact, we were rescued by the weather in 1987 when faced with an uphill task. It rained non-stop for three days to wash out the game. So there is a strong possibility that whoever wins the match at Lord’s would walk away with the series.By the sound of it, Pakistan are still searching for a player to fill the one-down spot in their batting order. After the departure of Zaheer Abbas, only Ijaz Ahmed has had any degree of success in this position. In my opinion, the best batsman in the team should always bat at number three. Sir Don Bradman and Viv Richards are the shining examples. Both were by nature aggressive stroke players and once they had taken the initiative, oppositions were always left fighting an almost impossible task.Since our best batsman, Inzamam-ul-Haq, has never shown any interest in filling this position we are left with a tricky situation of playing Faisal Iqbal or Younis Khan at number three. Both are inexperienced in test cricket, let alone the English conditions. Younis Khan is an extremely gifted young man but a little carefree. Faisal, on the other hand, has shown great courage and temperament recently but is still far from being a finished article.England, by comparison, are much more balanced with an experienced opening pair especially, Mike Atherton. They have tasted a fair amount of recent success and are united behind Nasser Hussain. A lot of credit must also be attributed to coach Duncan Fletcher for his innovations and resurgence of Craig White as an all-rounder. It was a delight to watch Craig run in to bowl in Pakistan after stationing fielders at strategic places and fully exploit the art of reverse swing. The current mini-heatwave in England might encourage him as well as Caddick and Gough to use the same tactics as they so successfully did in Pakistan last winter. Their disciplined line and length were exemplary and they were in command throughout the series. If it were a five-match series, I certainly would have backed England to win, being a lot more organized. However, this short series might help Pakistan in the end. There is always a chance of Saeed Anwar, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Yousuf Youhana clicking in an innings with help coming from the lower order batsmen. With a cushion of four hundred runs behind them Pakistan have enough firepower to bowl England out twice in a game.I expect Wasim Akram to play a major role in the series. He certainly wants to prove that he has a great desire to keep playing for Pakistan and achieve his dream of securing five-hundred plus test-match wickets. Waqar Younis should bowl well in tandem with Wasim Akram, but it’s after this duo when Pakistan run into trouble. Reports from England about Sami are not encouraging. It is really humiliating to be plagued by injuries so early in his career. However, we still expect him to be a great success in future.Shoaib Akhtar certainly has not bowled enough overs under match conditions to ensure his fitness. Tour selectors will be taking a risk if they choose to play him sooner than he is ready, as there is a then a chance of losing him for the entire tour. It is a pity he has played so little cricket in the past 18 months. He is the only genuine quick bowler in the side who could rattle the English batsmen. I feel some senior players should have a chat with him, encouraging him into playing as much cricket as possible. We want a fit and happy Shoaib Akhtar and not an emotionally mixed and lonesome fast bowler.All-rounder Azhar Mahmood may well be brought in to supplement the batting line up as well. But this does not leave us with much variety as Wasim, Waqar, Razzaq and Azhar bowl at more or less the same pace. Rashid Latif will certainly play, being the only wicket keeper in the squad. It should be an exciting test match to watch and let us hope our team returns home united and victorious, as the nation eagerly wants.

Man Utd dealt injury blow ahead of Roma

Manchester United will be without one first-team star when they head to Italy this evening…

What’s the latest?

The Red Devils face AS Roma in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final tie, and arguably they already have one foot in the final, having won 6-2 at Old Trafford last week.

However, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer won’t be able to call upon Daniel James after ruling him out ahead of tonight’s kick-off.

He told reporters, via the club’s official website:

“We didn’t get any injuries at the weekend. We trained well after that but Dan James is not available. He’s still out for a little while.”

Gutting blow

This will come as an annoying blow to the Manchester giants, even if they are in a very strong position.

It would be a massive surprise to see the Serie A outfit turn around a four-goal lead, especially after their capitulation in the first leg, so to not have a player that was in line to start this sort of encounter is certainly a setback.

James has started three of United’s last six league games, when fit and has emerged as an interesting option on the wing in the recent absence of Anthony Martial, who also remains out.

The 23-year-old did not feature in the 6-2 whitewash but was named on the bench, and given Solskjaer is likely to rotate his squad tonight, James would have undoubtedly been in line to start the match.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/the-latest-man-united-transfer-rumours-and-news-from-old-trafford-fofana-solskjaer-van-de-beek-wwodward” title=”The latest Man United transfer rumours and news from Old Trafford…”]

He has featured in all but one of their Europa League matches since exiting the Champions League group stages earlier this year, starting five of seven outings, as per Transfermarkt.

Solskjaer may be understandably angry to not have him available here.

Furthermore, United’s crucial game with Liverpool on Sunday was postponed due to a fan demonstration inside and outside the ground, as well as at the team’s hotel.

That game will now be played in a week’s time, meaning they’ll have four games in the space of a week, making the need for rotation tonight all that more important so not having James available is a huge blow.

Without the Welshman, Solskjaer will now frustratingly need to turn to one of his usual starters, one that he would have probably liked to have seen rested ahead of a tough week against Aston Villa, top-of-the-table rivals Leicester City, and now their Merseyside enemies.

In his absence, we could see teenage starlet Anthony Elanga, who could make his senior debut after being named in the 24-man squad, feature whilst Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Juan Mata will also make the trip.
