Gerrard makes Rangers transfer admission

Steven Gerrard has admitted that Glasgow Rangers could lose players this summer if they receive the right offer.

Gerrard makes transfer admission

The Gers have long since clinched the Premiership title and defeated Celtic for the fourth time in five outings this season on Sunday (Sky Sports). As such, there is likely to be plenty of interest in their players during the summer.

Speaking prior to that 4-1 Old Firm victory at the weekend, Gerrard admitted the club could sell players. He said:

“At a club like this, I don’t think it is a secret to say we will get attention for our own players. From a selfish point of view I don’t want any of my good players to go but the reality is if the right number lands then that decision might be taken out of my hands. I might not like it at the time but it’s where we are as a club.”

Worrying

While this is perhaps already known to fans across Glasgow, they will not be happy to hear it come from the horse’s mouth. Unfortunately, while the Gers will always be in the hunt for titles, Scottish football is unable to offer much competition outside of the Old Firm – for example, Rangers are currently 37 points clear of third-placed Hibernian (BBC).

The Gers’ squad is valued at £170m according to The Athletic – there are plenty of players they could sell for respectable fees. As such, it promises to be a busy summer at Ibrox – Gerrard will just be hoping he has a strong playing squad by the end of it.

In other news, some Rangers fans slammed this man’s performance against Celtic.

Atletico want Harry Winks from Tottenham

According to Sky Sports, Atletico Madrid are among a number of Spanish clubs who are interested in signing Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks.

Atletico want Winks

The 25-year-old has appeared just 10 times in the Premier League so far this season (Transfermarkt) and has become a bit-part player under Jose Mourinho.

It seems that the La Liga leaders would be keen to take him off Spurs’ hands, though, as Sky Sports claimed that a number of Spanish sides have made enquiries for the England international.

Source of income

Winks has appeared 10 times for his country and had been a regular for Tottenham for the past few seasons, while he was even called “amazing” by Danny Mills a few weeks ago (Football Insider).

However, he appears to have fallen out of favour this term as Mourinho turns to alternative options in the middle of the park. At 25, he would have been hoping to have established himself as an important player in the Spurs squad by now.

A move to Atletico could therefore be a good move for all involved. Los Rojiblancos are one of the biggest teams in Europe, as their Champions League record and haul of Europa League trophies would suggest.

It would arguably be a step up for Winks, while Daniel Levy and co would then be able to bring in a decent fee for a player who still has three years left on his contract in north London. It remains to be seen what the future holds for the midfielder.

In other news, Levy is reportedly planning a move for this star in the summer.

Maddison gives Leicester injury boost

Leicester City are set to receive a huge boost ahead of their Premier League clash versus Manchester City, with James Maddison ready to return to action.

The midfielder has been out of action since mid-February with a hip injury.

However, Foxes’ boss Brendan Rodgers has suggested that the former Norwich City man is likely to return to contention “after” the international break.

His return after a five-match lay-off will surely be massive news for Leicester as they attempt to continue their push for a UEFA Champions League place against runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Maddison is currently in the midst of his most productive campaign since arriving at the King Power Stadium from Norwich City in 2018.

He currently has 11 goals and ten assists in all competitions to his name and only needs to get on the scoresheet on a further four occasions to match the most prolific season of his career to date.

As a matter of fact, only striker Jamie Vardy can match the 24-year-old’s 21 total goal contributions throughout 2020/21.

It shows then how big of a player Maddison is that he is out-performing the vast majority of the Leicester squad and coming up against the irrepressible City at home on Saturday evening, Rodgers will certainly need his best players if the Foxes are to earn a result.

Having said that, Leicester’s results haven’t been harmed whilst Maddison has been ruled out.

In the five matches in which he has been unavailable, Rodgers’ troops have won three, drawn one and lost the other.

Nevertheless, in games in which the midfielder has scored – ten in total – Leicester have won every single one, including their famous 5-2 victory at the Etihad earlier this season.

Maddison will certainly be looking to continue that trend as he provides a big injury boost to Leicester and Rodgers at the weekend.

Exclusive: Keith Gillespie fears for Sander Berge’s future after long-term injury

Former Sheffield United midfielder Keith Gillespie has exclusively told Football FanCast that the Blades have missed Sander Berge’s “quality”, but thinks his injury record could see him struggle for a future move away from Bramall Lane.

The Norwegian joined from Genk for a club-record fee last January, but whilst the midfielder featured in all 14 of United’s Premier League remaining 2019/20 games following his arrival, he’s been plagued with injuries this term and therefore hasn’t been able to help the club battle against relegation.

He appeared in Sheffield United’s opening 13 league matches this season, but hasn’t been available since having surgery on a tendon his leg following an injury sustained in the defeat to Manchester United before Christmas.

Berge still has more than three years remaining on his Blades contract, but with the club on the verge of relegation, is set to leave Bramall Lane this summer – with north London rivals Tottenham and Arsenal both interested in the 23-year-old.

Despite those links, Gillespie believes that Berge’s recent injuries could make a potential summer move difficult for him. He told Football FanCast:

“Berge was brought in for a lot of money and he has been injured for most of the season, so that can hinder you because you want somebody with that quality to come in and help the side.

“Berge, who’s going to come in for him? He hasn’t played that much. You don’t know how injury prone he can be, he’s missed a huge chunk of the season.

“I certainly think he would have improved Sheffield United this season.”

Tella can step up for Saints with Ings out

Southampton received yet another blow at the weekend as it was confirmed that star striker Danny Ings is set to miss around four weeks of action through injury but in his absence, Ralph Hasenhuttl should rely on youngster Nathan Tella to step up.

The academy talent has established himself as something of a regular in Southampton’s matchday squad in recent weeks and was handed the second Premier League start of his career in the 2-0 win against Sheffield United at the weekend.

The 21-year-old was originally seen as a winger but impressed in a striker role for David Horseman’s B team earlier in the season, scoring four goals in a 5-2 win against Leicester City in the Premier League 2.

This was clearly enough to convince Hasenhuttl to give him more regular chances in his first-team, as he has gone on to make nine appearances in the Premier League, as well as one in the FA Cup, where he earned his first assist for the senior side in the 2-0 win against Wolves.

Tella was originally selected alongside Ings in attack at Bramall Lane at the weekend but when the former Liverpool man was forced off injured in the first half, he partnered Che Adams, which could well be Hasenhuttl’s preferred front two for upcoming fixtures, as both impressed with their performances.

The former Arsenal youngster was a constant thorn in the Sheffield United defence with his pace and willingness to make runs in behind, which led to Southampton’s opening goal, as he was fouled by Ethan Ampadu for a penalty, which James Ward-Prowse tucked away.

Following the game, Hasenhuttl was full of praise for Tella, saying:

“He can be a threat against everybody because he is quick, even on the ball, he is calm.

“He is never nervous, he is never arrogant and he has a good mixture of enjoying what he is doing and staying calm on the pitch.”

Therefore, it seems clear that the Austrian is a big fan of Tella and he should have faith in him to step up in the absence of Ings for the next month or so, despite him having made just 12 senior appearances for Southampton in his career thus far.

Rangers made the right call over Jordan Jones

It seems Rangers have played their cards right with Jordan Jones as Alan Hutton believes their price reveal will spark a bidding war for the Northern Irishman this summer.

What’s the word?

Jones, who reportedly earns £9,100-a-week, joined Sunderland on loan from Rangers in the January transfer window, but he has been restricted to just four appearances in the north east, including two as a substitute.

The 26-year-old has fallen out of favour under Steven Gerrard after breaking coronavirus protocols, and according to Football Insider, he could make a move for a fee of around £600,000.

When asked if their asking price could tempt potential suitors into trying to sign Jones in the summer, Hutton said: “Yeah, you would think so. I do like him as a player, but it’s not worked out.

“You can go right back to his injury against Celtic when it was a rash tackle, he’s still young enough, he’s got plenty of years in front of them and bringing him in on a free, you will make money out of the situation.

“It’s just been a shame and he’ll probably think the same, it was a massive opportunity coming to Rangers, his boyhood club, to really stamp his authority on it.

“Through different sorts of situations, on the field and off it’s not worked out.

“I think he’ll be a player that Rangers will look to offload in the summer but I’m sure if he goes down to Sunderland and does well, there will be teams that are willing to take the risk and pay the money for him.”

Exit pending?

It seems the Scottish Premiership leaders are preparing for a flood of offers for the nine-cap Northern Ireland international when the transfer market re-opens in the summer, so it appears they are setting the bar in advance.

Rangers know there may be plenty of Championship interest in the winger, who had attracted interest from the likes of Middlesbrough, QPR and Preston last year, while Sunderland may also be keeping a watchful eye on future proceedings.

As it stands, no official offers have been received for Jones, who has made just four appearances for Rangers this season, but it seems a bidding war could erupt at some point in the near future.

Big things were expected from the winger after impressing at Premiership rivals Kilmarnock, but by his own admission, it’s not worked out as well as planned for Jones at the 54-time Scottish champions.

He’s barely been used by Gerrard, and it’s easy to see why – one goal and two assists in 19 appearances across all competitions is hardly the stuff of legend.

Now 26 and heading into the final year of his contract, he won’t fetch a hefty price, but Rangers should look to get him off their books for good.

Gers Sporting Director Ross Wilson made the right decision this January.
