Pritam Das bowls Assam to first win

East Zone

Pritam Das took a four-wicket haul to help Assam defend 137 against Odisha at Jadhavpur University Complex. The right-arm seamer took 4 for 19 to send Odisha crashing to 102. Assam were driven by a third-wicket stand of 50 between Dheeraj Jadhav and Sibsankar Roy, who top-scored with 47 off 29 balls. Deepak Behera got rid of the pair to finish with 2 for 24. In reply, Odisha were off to a poor start, losing two wickets in the second over to Arup Das. The openers Paresh Patel top-scored with 38 but the rest failed to show any resistance as Pritam Das chipped away. After Patel was dismissed in the 16th over with the score on 96 for 7, the innings came to a swift end and Assam recorded their first win.At Eden Gardens, Jharkhand squeezed in a 11-run win over Tripura. Tripura’s chase of 139 hinged on their captain Yogesh Takawale who scored a fifty but their task became improbable in the final over when they lost Takawale for 58, still needing 20 from the last four balls. Jharkhand opted to bat first but lost early wickets. Ishank Jaggi’s departure for 36 left them at 47 for 3 and it was their middle order that chipped in to raise the score to 138. Manisankar Murasingh and Tushar Saha were economical and took two wickets each. Tripura were jolted early in their chase by Jaskaran Singh, who took two wickets. Tripura had lost half their side for 72 in the 15th over and the pressure increased on Takawale. Jaskaran got rid of him to finish with 3 for 27 as Jharkhand registered their first win.

Young called up for Caribbean tour

Ireland have called up Craig Young for their first squad since the retirement of Trent Johnston, with 15 players due to travel to the Caribbean for three limited-overs internationals against West Indies, as well as in the domestic 50-over competition.Ed Joyce will be rested for the Regional Super50 but the squad is otherwise at full strength. Andrew White misses the opportunity to become Ireland’s most-capped player, with Andrew McBrine favoured in the shorter formats, while there is a return for Andrew Poynter, who last featured for Ireland in 2012.Young, who has played once for Ireland previously in the Intercontinental Cup, has spent some time over the winter working with Craig McDermott, Australia’s bowling coach, and his extra pace saw him included.”Craig has been in Brisbane for the past eight weeks working with bowling coach ‘Billy’ McDermott,” Ireland’s coach, Phil Simmons, said.”The feedback from Australia on Craig and the other two guys – Graeme McCarter and Peter Chase – has been excellent. They’ve impressed everyone with their commitment and attitude, and they’ve all got big futures. We felt that Craig had the edge in terms of extra pace and that would be a useful asset in the West Indies. He also had a very successful debut against Scotland last year, when he took six wickets and bowled pretty hostile spells.”Joyce’s involvement will be limited to the ODI and two T20s, ahead of a busy season. The Sussex captain will likely be part of the squad for the World Twenty20, in Bangladesh in March and April, while Ireland also welcome Sri Lanka for two ODIs in May.”The selectors and Ed agreed that this competition was a good opportunity to rest him with a gruelling schedule ahead in 2014,” Simmons said. “It’s nearly ten months of full-on cricket and we’ve got to be careful with Ed’s fitness.”Ireland will play three group games in the Regional Super50, all at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad, with Guyana their first opponents on January 31. The final will take place on February 15, with Ireland then facing West Indies in Jamaica four days later.Ireland squad: William Porterfield (capt) (Warwickshire), Alex Cusack (Clontarf), George Dockrell (Somerset), Ed Joyce (Sussex)*, John Mooney (North County), Tim Murtagh (Middlesex), Andrew McBrine (Donemana), Kevin O’Brien (Railway Union), Niall O’Brien (Leicestershire), Andrew Poynter (Clontarf), Max Sorensen (The Hills), Paul Stirling (Middlesex), Stuart Thompson (Eglinton), Gary Wilson (Surrey), Craig Young (Bready)*Only for international matches

Danielle Wyatt claimed 3 for 16 and debutant Tash Farrant took two wickets in her second over as Pakistan were restricted to 75 for 6 from their 20 overs, well short of the 146 required for victory.Edwards opted to open with the spin of Wyatt and she claimed the wicket of Javeria Rauf with her sixth delivery. Wyatt picked up a second wicket in her second over and Farrant’s double-strike left Pakistan on 14 for 4. By the middle of the seventh over it was 23 for 5 before a 22-run stand between top-scorer Nahida Khan and Nida Dar.Wyatt removed Dar for 12 but, with 101 required from less than seven overs, the game was already up. Nahida finished on 28 from 48 balls, putting on 30 with captain Sana Mir.England’s captain, Edwards, had scored half-centuries in the two ODI wins over Pakistan earlier in the week and she set the tone again, with a 33-ball 46. Edwards and Taylor put on 57 for the second wicket and although Pakistan made regular incisions thereafter, Bismah Maroof picking up two wickets in the 16th over, Taylor held the innings together with ninth T20 half-century.

WTC final-bound South Africa players likely to leave before IPL playoffs

The issue of WTC final-bound players missing the revised IPL 2025 playoffs is under discussion between CSA and BCCI

Firdose Moonda13-May-2025The eight South African players involved in both IPL 2025 and the World Test Championship (WTC) final are expected to leave India by May 25, as per the initial NOCs issued to them.Kagiso Rabada (GT), Lungi Ngidi (RCB), Tristan Stubbs (DC), Aiden Markram (LSG), Ryan Rickelton, Corbin Bosch (both MI), Marco Jansen (PBKS) and Wiaan Mulder (SRH) will return home to South Africa before leaving for the United Kingdom on May 30 with the rest of the squad. That will rule them out of the rescheduled IPL playoffs which is an issue currently under discussion between CSA and the BCCI.ESPNcricinfo understands that given the importance of the WTC final, CSA is hopeful the BCCI will understand their decision to not extend NOCs for those players to June 3 but concerned that it will create tension in the relationship between the two boards. National coach Shukri Conrad and director of national teams and high performance Enoch Nkwe both said they understood that the May 25 deadline was still in place.Related

“The initial agreement with IPL-BCCI was, with the final being on the 25th, our players would return on the 26th, so that it allows them ample time before we fly out on the 30th,” Conrad said in Johannesburg after South Africa announced their WTC final squad. “That is the ongoing conversations that are being had between people in a higher pay grade than I am – the director of cricket [Nkwe] and Pholetsi [Moselki, the CSA chief executive]. They’re dealing with that. We want our players back on the 26th and hopefully that comes to fruition.”Nkwe, at the same engagement, indicated talks were ongoing and CSA was hopeful the players would prioritise the WTC.”It is an individual decision, obviously, to return or to play or continue,” Nkwe said. “But one thing we’ve made it clear, and we are finalising that with IPL and BCCI, is sticking to our original plan when it comes to the WTC preparations, obviously with May 26 being the latest for the Test guys to come back.”South Africa will arrive in England on May 31 and then play Zimbabwe in a four-day warm-up match in Arundel from June 3, the day of the final of the IPL. The WTC final runs from June 11 to 15.GT, RCB, PBKS and MI are well-placed to finish in the top four in the IPL 2025 points table with DC also having a chance to make the playoffs. SRH are already knocked out of the race to the playoffs while LSG are on the brink of elimination.GT might miss Rabada for the playoffs while PBKS might be without Jansen, if CSA sticks to its initial agreement with the IPL.

Pietersen knock entices England

ScorecardKevin Pietersen raises his bat after reaching his hundred against Lancashire but there was more to come on a remarkable day at Guildford•PA Photos

Kevin Pietersen, with a double-century of the highest class, did not so much nudge the England selectors as grab them by the throat and roar ‘pick me’ in their faces. The selectors meet this weekend to pick the 30-man preliminary England squad for September’s World T20. This squad must be submitted to the ICC on July 18 and, while Pietersen had previously announced his retirement from limited-overs international cricket, all the evidence of recent days suggest he is having second thoughtsWhile Pietersen and Co. may hope to persuade the ECB to rethink their policy of insisting that players must be available for both forms of limited-overs cricket to be considered for either, there seems little chance of that happening. Andy Flower refused to back down when confronted by Robert Mugabe; he is most unlikely to back down now.It is hard to see a middle course, a course where Pietersen is rested for more ODIs than his colleagues, but perhaps it may be found. His Test career and his IPL future seemingly remain assured. There may be other doubts. There may be doubts over whether his teammates want him back; whether his request for a somewhat easier schedule should be heeded and whether it is fair for the likes of Alex Hales, Ravi Bopara and Ian Bell – the men who have flourished in his place – to potentially make way for his return. There may be doubts, too, over whether England need such a distraction just as they begin an important Test series against South Africa. But there should be no doubting Pietersen’s class. He was, after all, man of the tournament when England won the World T20 in 2010 and, since returning to form in the ODI series against Pakistan, has produced some of the finest performances of his life. This, by any standards, was an extraordinary innings. It was not just that Pietersen hit the fastest first-class century of the season – 93 balls with 13 fours and three sixes – or that he went on to hit the fastest double-century of the season – 170 balls, 25 fours and seven sixes – but that he bullied the bowling – the bowling of the county champions, no less – with a dominance rarely witnessed in the professional game. It was an innings that would have made Sri Viv Richards proud. And there really isn’t higher praise than that.Indeed, in years to come, those lucky enough to have been at Guildford for the third day of this game may reflect that they were blessed to witness greatness in action. Pietersen, in compiling the seventh double-century of his first-class career, a chanceless affair, provided a medley of his greatest hits: the ferocious cut shot; the impudent scoop; the outrageous switch-hit; the murderous pull; the dismissive slog-sweep and the gentle sweep; the magical flick through mid-wicket and, most of all, the thundering drive over the bowlers’ heads that brought majority of his sixes. And, it was interspersed throughout with quick singles and deft touches that spoke volumes for his fitness and his hunger for runs. Some of us are fortunate to watch many fine innings and many worthy centuries. This one, for its range of stroke and its complete mastery over decent opposition, stood out. It really does not get any better.Poor Simon Kerrigan bore the brunt of Pietersen’s assault. Kerrigan, a left-arm spinner of unusual skill and promise, was the victim of seven of Pietersen’s eight sixes and conceded 152 in his 23 overs. Only late in the day did Kerrigan allow the assault to affect him. For the most part he bowled well, but was unfortunate enough to come up against a great batsmen in murderous mood. Even Pietersen admitted that this innings was “right up there” among his best”Simon has bowled at a very good international cricketer on a tough pitch with short boundaries,” Lancashire coach Peter Moores said. “It won’t be the first time KP’s attacked a spinner. Simon’s had his days. He got his nine-for against Hampshire, but you’ve got to take both sides as a cricketer.”Some perspective is probably required. The pitch was flat, the bowling decent, though far from exceptional and the outfield is both short and fast. But Surrey were actually under some pressure when Pietersen walked to the crease and, bearing in mind the traumatic events of recent weeks, this was an important innings. Bearing in mind he remains unbeaten, Pietersen may even be able to build a match-winning lead on the final day.”It’s been a very traumatic time for the management and everyone at the club,” Pietersen said afterwards as he reflected on the death of Tom Maynard. “Today was a day that the boys needed. I said that I wanted to come back and put smiles on the guys’ faces. The boys have gelled real tight in the dressing room, some of them will be lifelong friends after all the stuff that they’ve been through and this was just a good day for Surrey.”It was, oddly enough, only Pietersen’s second championship century since his Test debut in 2005. He has made 20 Test centuries in that time, but his last in the championship came on May 7, 2008 at Taunton. It is his 43rd first-class century, but his first for Surrey.Pietersen’s brilliance utterly overshadowed several other worthy performances on an enjoyable day’s cricket. Not only did Zander de Bruyn make a splendid 94 in helping Pietersen add 181 in 35 overs, but Steven Croft extended his overnight total to the highest score of career in the morning session. Croft added 50 in 35 balls with six fours and a six as Lancashire scored 60 in 37 minutes to set up their declaration. It left Surrey requiring 336 just to avoid the follow-on. And, after Rory Burns, having fielded for two-and-half days, was bowled first ball, leaving one that turned out to be very straight, that looked some way distant. But, on a wonderful day of almost 500 runs, everything else seemed trivial compared to the excellence of Pietersen.
