Arthur emerges as England coaching candidate

Cricinfo staff26-Mar-2009The ECB is believed to have short-listed Mickey Arthur, the South Africa coach, as one of the candidates for the top England role, according to reports in the British media.Arthur is one of four contenders for the England coaching job, a list which includes current England coach Andy Flower, who was appointed on a temporary basis, Kent’s Graham Ford, and former Indian mentor John Wright, the and the reported. Former England spinner Ashley Giles was reportedly told by Hugh Morris, managing director of England cricket, that he did not possess adequate coaching experience. However, Arthur told Cricinfo that he hasn’t been approached or interviewed by the ECB in this regard and would like to honour his commitment with South Africa till the 2011 World Cup. “I haven’t had any contact with the ECB on this issue,” Arthur said. “It’s a great opportunity but I still have time left with South Africa and would like to honour that commitment to my country.”Arthur, who guided South Africa to their first Test series win in Australia recently, had his contract extended last October by Cricket South Africa until the end of the tour of New Zealand in April, 2012. He had thanked the South African board for the “great honour” and for “buying into the plan leading up to the World Cup”.England have been without a full-time coach since Peter Moores was sacked in January after the fall-out with Kevin Pietersen, who was the captain at the time. Pietersen was replaced by Andrew Strauss for the West Indies tour.Simon Cummins, who is leading the recruitment process for the ECB’s head-hunting firm, gave no indication as to when a final decision would be made on the England coaching position. “We’re down to the interview stage,” Cummins told Cricinfo. “We will take as long as necessary to find the ideal person for the job. Some of the time issues will be determined by (the applicants’) current commitments, and their geographical whereabouts.”

Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke have jointly won the Allan Border Medal, the first time in the award’s ten-year history that it has been shared. At the end of a period of decline for Australia, it was notable that it was their captain and vice-captain who stood at the top with 41 votes each. The other man who has led the side in the past, Michael Hussey, was third with 38, while Mitchell Johnson, who had been the favourite in the lead-up to the ceremony, came in fourth with 30 votes. It was the fourth win for Ponting, who also collected the medal in 2004, 2006 and 2007, and the second for Clarke, who won the prize in 2005.Clarke said it was especially pleasing to share the prize with Ponting, who had been a mentor over the past few years. That has been especially so over the past 12 months after Clarke took over the vice-captaincy from Adam Gilchrist, a role he has clearly relished.”As soon as I’ve walked into the Australian team I’ve tried to learn as much as possible from Ricky Ponting,” Clarke said. “Nothing has really changed to be honest. Being vice-captain has just brought me a lot closer.”During the voting period, which began on February 26 last year, Clarke was second to Simon Katich on Australia’s Test run tally with 1019 at 56.61, including one century in each of Australia’s four Test series. In the one-day format, Clarke took the reins as skipper on several occasions but his own form was below-par, with 209 runs at 16.07.Ponting had a similarly lopsided season, and one that was by his lofty standards relatively quiet. But in a side that has struggled to maintain its No. 1 position, Ponting’s 974 Test runs at 44.27 have been invaluable. He scored three centuries during the voting period but his efforts didn’t always equate to Australian victories, as at the MCG in December, when he scored 101 and 99 in the loss to South Africa. In one-day internationals, Ponting’s form was less impressive and he made 309 runs at 25.75 with a highest score of 69. Ponting was visibly surprised when he was announced as one of the winners and he said he had expected Clarke or Johnson to take out the honour.
Clarke was also named Test Player of the Year © Getty Images
“This is an amazing shock to me,” Ponting said. “I was sitting back at the table tonight and waiting for Pup or Mitch to get up here tonight and accept the award. As we all know it’s been an up-and-down year for the team. Everybody at the moment is writing us off but I know deep down in my heart that we’re not very far away at all.”It’s been an amazing time with some of our greats leaving the team, some obviously very young and exciting players coming into the team. It’s an amazing challenge for me and certainly for Michael to keep leading this team in the right direction, hopefully showing some direction and passing on some experience to the younger guys.”Clarke was also named the Test Player of the Year for the first time, while Nathan Bracken was rewarded for his outstanding limited-overs bowling form with his first One-Day International Player of the Year title. In the Test category, Clarke won with 12 votes from Ponting and Simon Katich, who were in joint second with 10.Bracken picked up his one-day award thanks to a one-vote buffer from the second-placed Hussey, who himself was one vote clear of Shaun Marsh in third. Bracken played 16 of Australia’s 17 ODIs during the voting period and he collected 22 wickets at 24.50, with an economy rate of 4.09. He was the Player of the Series in last year’s CB Series against Sri Lanka and India. He began the voting period with his best bowling for the year, when he collected 4 for 29 against Sri Lanka at the MCG. Bracken’s season stayed strong after that and he had a particularly productive tour of the West Indies, where he picked up eight wickets at 19.75 and helped the side complete a 5-0 whitewash.Bracken has developed a formidable reputation as a death bowler and he said it was a role he enjoyed. “It’s good fun, it’s something that I really enjoy doing,” Bracken said upon receiving his trophy. “I guess it’s good being in control at the end.”

Primeira expulsão do Corinthians no ano, Gabriel protesta: 'Saio chateado'

Aston Villa linked with Abdou Harroui

Aston Villa have been linked with a move for Sparta Rotterdam midfielder Abdou Harroui, as reported by TuttoMercatoWeb.

The Lowdown: Harroui profiled

Harroui is 23 years of age and has been with his current employers since 2018, making 103 appearances, scoring 18 times and registering 13 assists.

Capable of playing as a central midfielder, defensive midfielder or on the right, he has also made 13 appearances for Netherlands at under-21 level.

He appears to be at the top of his game with his career-high £3.15m Transfermarkt valuation, and it seems as if Villa are keen on his services.

The Latest: Villa links

TuttoMercatoWeb shared a story on Saturday claiming that Harroui is ready to leave Sparta Rotterdam.

The report added that Villa are ‘strong’ on the player, with a significant development possible over the weekend.

The Verdict: A shrewd signing?

Harroui has plenty of experience and is only just 23 years of age, so a late summer move could be a shrewd piece of business by Villa.

He is also into the final 12 months of his contract, so there could be a chance that Villa may sign him for less than his Transfermarkt valuation.

Villa missed out on long-term target James Ward-Prowse from Southampton after he signed a new deal at St Mary’s, so bringing in Harroui instead could be a smart move, both financially and in the long run in regards to the Dutchman’s development.

Gerrard has big McCrorie decision to make

When Rangers resume after the international break, Steven Gerrard has a big decision to make when it comes to selecting a goalkeeper.

After both Allan McGregor and Jon McLaughlin were ruled out after testing positive for covid, Gerrard was forced to select McCrorie in between the sticks for the games against Alashkert and Celtic.

The 23-year-old shot-stopper, who had never played for Rangers’ senior side before, impressively kept clean sheets as Rangers drew 0-0 and 1-0 in those respective games, which should surely give Gerrard something to think about ahead of their game against St Johnstone next weekend.

A graduate of the Rangers academy, McCrorie has spent each of the last four seasons out on loan, progressing through the leagues with spells at Berwick Rangers, Greenock Morton, Queen of the South and Livingston.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776”]

Last season saw the ‘keeper make 26 appearances for the Lions, in which he conceded 46 goals and kept four clean sheets, and whilst this isn’t the greatest record, it gave him some much-needed experience in the top-flight, which definitely will have helped him through the recent fixtures.

After he made his debut in the draw against Alashkert, which secured Rangers’ spot in the Europa League group stages, assistant manager Gary McAllister was full of praise for the young goalkeeper, saying:

“We have loads of belief in Robby and he didn’t let us down.”

“I thought he dealt with the ball well and the one awkward shot that came in low and bounced in front of him, I thought he handled that well.

“So it is a very good debut.”

McCrorie is reaching the age where he needs to be playing senior football regularly and although Gerrard has alternated between McLaughlin and McGregor so far this season, they are 33 and 39 respectively, so the 41-year-old manager should definitely consider giving the 23-year-old more first-team opportunities after he proved himself in those aforementioned displays.

Man Utd remain hopeful over Pogba’s future

It’s been an eventful summer for Manchester United, with Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane arriving at Old Trafford, but a current member of the first-team squad continues to dominate the headlines.

What’s the story?

Paul Pogba has been heavily linked with a move to Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain throughout the current window after entering the final year of his current contract, and The Athletic’s Adam Crafton has provided an update on the World Cup-winning midfielder’s situation.

Crafton’s latest report concerning the future of Real Madrid target Kylian Mbappe and the potential domino effect his exit could have, states that PSG remain interested in signing Pogba, although they would prefer to do a deal on a free transfer in 12 months’ time.

However, it also claims that United still hope to convince Pogba to commit his long-term future to the club, meaning the 28-year-old could still put pen to paper on fresh terms at his boyhood club.

Manchester United fans will be buzzing

PSG were originally expected to make a move for Pogba this summer before the opportunity to secure Lionel Messi’s signature proved too good to turn down.

And Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be delighted that he’s still able to call upon the maestro’s services after watching him break a Premier League record in the opening weeks of the new campaign.

The former Juventus ace became the quickest player to register five assists in a Premier League season after setting up four goals in United’s opening-day demolition against Leeds United, before teeing up Mason Greenwood against Southampton last time out.

After reminding everyone of his incredible ability and importance to Solskjaer’s side, the Old Trafford outfit’s supporters will surely be buzzing to learn of this latest revelation.

Pogba has often split opinion since returning to United in a then world-record £89 million deal from Juventus back in 2017, but he’s consistently shown his best form since December last year, striking up a formidable partnership with Bruno Fernandes in the engine room.

With United finally appearing capable of challenging for major honours once again, the club’s fanbase and hierarchy alike will be desperate for one of their star performers to commit his future to the ongoing revolution under Solskjaer.

Yorkshire end strongest in draw

Yorkshire finished the Roses match well on top, with Lancashire having to fight hard to avoid defeat, but it is inevitable that they will have a couple of regrets and ‘what if’ questions.

John Ward at Old Trafford15-Aug-2008
ScorecardYorkshire finished the Roses match well on top, with Lancashire having to fight hard to avoid defeat, but it is inevitable that they will have a couple of regrets and ‘what if’ questions. A delayed declaration, unwarranted trust in the weather forecast, and their lack of a good second spinner: all were factors that reduced their chances of victory, but in the end the loss of almost a day and a half to rain may have been too much for them anyway.Yorkshire began the day on 234, three runs ahead of Lancashire, but crucially with eight wickets in hand. Their preferred scenario would have been to run up a total of 400 as quickly as possible, declare, and then bowl out Lancashire a second time for an outright victory. In the event, the runs took a little longer than they would have liked. Jacques Rudolph began with some aggressive strokes and raced into the twenties, but then he and Andrew Gale became rather tied down by persistent bowling.Gayle finally lost his wicket for 136, driving a catch to wide long-on; almost immediately afterwards Adam Lyth (1) called for a risky single to backward point, only to be sent back and run out. Rudolph’s 50 came off 72 balls and he eventually fell for 54, getting in a tangle over a ball from the occasional leg-spinner Faf du Plessis that reared out of the footmarks, and popping a catch to the keeper.Tim Bresnan was promoted, presumably in the hope of quick runs, and if so was a partial success. Yorkshire at lunch had earned another batting point, on 355 for 6, but the declaration that many expected did not materialize. Rain was not considered likely, and a declaration at that point would give them a lead of only 119 runs and Lancashire two sessions during which they would surely exceed that total if they survived, so it did make sense for Yorkshire to seek full batting points – if the weather forecast proved correct. The major problem was that it took a little too long to reach that 400, which was attained almost 40 minutes after lunch, with Bresnan scoring 47 not out.du Plessis finished with 3 for 61, while Cork’s 1 for 26, surprisingly under-bowled for just 12 overs, was also presentable, but the others would not have pleased their owners. Keedy took 1 for 142 off 48.5 overs, and deserved better, troubling the batsmen at times, but just seemed to lack that little extra something that the great English spinners of the past had.Lancashire went in again with a deficit of 169 runs, and a minimum of 51 overs to survive. Matthew Hoggard for one was fired up; in his first over Iain Sutcliffe nudged a four but was then caught at the wicket from a ball that bounced and moved away. Paul Horton did not look comfortable and earned two fortunate boundaries, but he hung on, while Stuart Law (4) departed, being easily caught at mid-on off a stroke that was half hook, half pull against Bresnan. It was a spinner’s pitch, but it was still startling to see occasional leg-spinner Rudolph coming on for the ninth over. Adil Rashid came on at the other end, a more orthodox move, and he immediately bamboozled and bowled du Plessis with a well-flighted googly – they don’t get many of those in South Africa. Lancashire were now in trouble at 29 for 3.Horton played a fine rearguard innings while keeping the score moving, reaching 50 off 83 balls, and the much-maligned Lou Vincent, though virtually strokeless (3 off 38 balls at tea) hung in there with him. Adam Lyth also bowled, but Yorkshire, who had omitted David Wainwright, now felt the loss of a genuine second spinner to partner Rashid. Darren Gough cut down his pace and run to have a try with cutters, and he rang his bowling changes, but the two refused to yield. Within living memory, bowlers such as Johnny Wardle, Bob Appleyard and Ray Illingworth would surely have completed the job, but times have changed and English counties do not produce spin bowlers like they used to.At five o’clock, the unexpected happened – the clouds loomed and the players left the field for bad light. Fifteen minutes later, with light still poor but only a light smattering of rain, the game was officially abandoned as a draw, and Yorkshire were left to regret what might have been. Rashid finished with figures of 1 for 16 off 16 overs, but he too must surely have regretted not being part of what is virtually an extinct species in the cricket world outside Asia – a set of ‘spin twins’.

Journalist says Crystal Palace are not interested in Batshuayi

Crystal Palace reporter Matt Woosnam has revealed the Eagles are not interested in signing Michy Batshuayi on a permanent basis.

The Chelsea striker has enjoyed two loan spells at Selhurst Park and scored eight goals in 33 appearances.

Although the Belgium international has returned to Stamford Bridge ahead of the new season, he is among those boss Thomas Tuchel is keen to sell in order to boost his transfer kitty.

Chelsea are looking to offload a string of high-earning fringe players as they set their sights on signing big-name targets like Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.

Batshuayi has failed to nail down a regular starting berth at Chelsea following a reported £33million transfer from Marseille in 2016.

The 27-year-old has also spent time at Borussia Dortmund and Valencia since his move to west London but new Palace manager Patrick Vieira, who was appointed earlier this month, will not be dipping into his transfer budget to secure Batshuayi’s services permanently.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, The Athletic journalist Woosnam said: “I think that’s almost certainly not going to happen. It’s out of the question.

“Palace are looking at revitalising their squad and it’s very clear they’re looking at younger players.

“That does not mean completely avoiding slightly older players but Batshuayi is slightly old in that respect.”

Newcastle transfer update on Skipp

Newcastle United are now reportedly ‘desperate’ to sign Oliver Skipp before the summer transfer window ends.

The Lowdown: Skipp impresses

Skipp was a key player in helping Norwich City get promoted back up to the Premier League from the EFL Championship in the 2020/21 season, missing out on just one game in the division, scoring one goal and making a further two assists (Transfermarkt).

It is not clear whether Tottenham Hotspur would be willing to sell him given his impressive loan spell, as he is likely to have plenty of admirers from now until when the window closes.

The Latest: Newcastle desperate

As per The Daily Mail, the St. James’ Park faithful are ‘desperate’ to bring in new midfield players, and Skipp is someone that they have expressed an interest in signing and seemingly high on their list of potential targets.

Steve Bruce is an admirer of the Spurs ace, but the Canaries are also keen on signing him back after being such a success at Carrow Road.

The Verdict: Sign

It is a no brainer that the North East club should be looking to bring in Skipp, as he could prove to be a real asset to the team.

Proving already that he is capable of playing in the top flight by making Championship football look too easy, he won no fewer than 5.7 of his duels per game as well as averaging 2.2 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and one clearance per match (Sofascore) last season. The Englishman could be a great alternative to Joe Willock, should the Toon not be able to sign him on a permanent deal from Arsenal.

Once dubbed a ‘phenomenal’ player by none other than former Lilywhites manager Jose Mourinho, the 20-year-old still has so much potential, and so the Tyneside club should be doing all that they can to secure his signature, especially if they cannot get Willock over the line.

Adams the only Auckland smiler as Northern Districts win

Andre Adams, the bustling all-rounder, was probably the only Aucklander who could raise a smile as Northern Districts outplayed Auckland by 60 runs with a smart all-round performance in the State Shield one-day cricket match on Eden Park’s outer oval

Don Cameron28-Dec-2002Andre Adams, the bustling all-rounder, was probably the only Aucklander who could raise a smile as Northern Districts outplayed Auckland by 60 runs with a smart all-round performance in the State Shield one-day cricket match on Eden Park’s outer oval today.Adams’ place in the New Zealand World Cup squad became firmer as he survived a stiff test on his back injury. He bowled at about three-quarter vigour to take four for 37 from ten overs in leading the Auckland bowling effort as Northern Districts scored 218 for seven in their 50 overs. However, Adams scored only a seven-minute two as the Auckland batting struggled and finally expired at 158 in 44 overs.Ross Dykes, one of the New Zealand selectors who must deliver the 15-man World Cup squad by the middle of next week, said he was heartened by Adams’ vigorous bowling, and by the way he was able to come back for a strong second spell.”He will have to come through a similar test at Alexandra on Monday when Auckland play Otago,” said Dykes, “but Andre gave a very encouraging performance and that pleases me.”If a stranger without World Cup favourites in his head had watched the game he would have lavished more praise on the two Northern Districts men – Joseph Yovich, the 26-year-old all-rounder, and Matthew Hart, the former New Zealand left-arm spinner – who saved their team’s cause in the early afternoon. After choosing to bat first on a tired-looking pitch – a relic of the Auckland-Wellington State Championship match earlier this month – the Northern Districts first innings stuttered along. Adams and Richard Morgan reduced Northern to 26 for two and then three (the third being Scott Styris, another World Cup candidate, for a four-ball duck) and eventually Northern were on then ropes at 81 for five.Half Northern Districts’ overs had been used up, and 150 or 160 seemed an optimistic target as the old pitch was not the easiest of batting surfaces. By the time Yovich arrived at this critical point, Hart had dug in with his dogged left-handed batting.Yovich is usually a low-order struggler, but he started today at No 7 as if he regarded himself as the confident batting star of the team. Soon he was stroking fours about the smooth outfield. A couple of sixes rocketed over the long-on line. Heartened by this (pardon the pun) Hart increased his scoring rate.Very soon the Auckland bowling began to look a little thin, the fielding not as keen and sharp as it had been early in the innings. They scored 50 runs together in 37 minutes from 66 balls and kept up the momentum with a second 50 in 40 minutes from 56 balls.By the time Adams bowled Yovich, the tall young man had scored 70 from 90 balls, including two sixes and seven fours, and the 107 runs he added with Hart had carried Northern Districts to 198, considerably better than the early limp batting had suggested.Hart went at 204 for seven, 153 minutes for his 62 from 81 balls, and Northern Districts probably had a very comfortable lunch.Matt Horne might have upset them with four quick fours in the opening Auckland attack, but he hit himself out at 30, Llorne Howell did the same at 39 and when Mark Richardson was caught behind after an unwise slash outside the off-stump, Auckland were three for 52, and worse at 55 for four when Tama Canning was run out.Hart, aided by Styris, then stifled the Aucklanders with their pin-point accuracy (Styris’ first spell read 6-3-6-0), and Hart thoroughly deserved figures of 10-0-30-2, although why he should concede eight no-balls must remain a mystery.Brooke Walker, the Auckland captain, led a dogged rearguard action with 33 not out from 79 balls, but the smart Northern Districts fielding wrapped up the rest of the innings.James Marshall was the star in this department, with superb catches to remove Horne, Howell and Rob Nicol, and them a brilliant stop and dive-pass of the ball to run out Morgan.
