Graham Gooch believes Twenty20 cricket means batsmen need to remember how to build a long inning•AFP

Graham Gooch, England’s batting coach, has come to the defence of Andrew Strauss and Kevin Pietersen, the two batsmen in the current line-up whose form is under the most scrutiny following a summer marked by dramatic and seemingly unpreventable batting collapses. While Pietersen’s quest for his first Test century in 26 innings will get underway – weather permitting – during Friday’s second day at Lord’s, Strauss’s current struggles were exacerbated by a peach of a delivery from Mohammad Asif, who bowled him through the gate for 13 to take his own string of century-less innings to 23 and counting.Given the habitually overcast skies under which this series has been played, and the skill levels of Pakistan’s new-ball pairing of Asif and Mohammad Amir, Gooch insisted that neither man was especially out of form, and that the squad as a whole was remaining sanguine about the challenge they have been posed by some talented opponents. However, he also suggested that many of the players in the team needed to relearn the art of building an innings in bowler-friendly conditions, with the inference that the onset of Twenty20 cricket had eroded a degree of the patience they might have shown in the past.”Ideally you’d like a big score every time but you have to play to the conditions,” said Gooch. “The players are in a good place in terms of their preparation, but the collapses have been talked about, because conditions like this require a different mentality. The ball is moving around and let’s be fair, the Pakistan attack are decent – they swing it around and get something out of the pitch – so it’s a challenge, that’s for sure.”Gooch, who has been involved with the England Test squad on a consultancy basis since last winter’s tour of South Africa, insisted that Strauss was not out of form despite a current series tally of 155 runs at 25.83, adding that opening batsmen are programmed to accept early dismissals against the new ball as part and parcel of the game. On the subject of Pietersen, however, he suggested that the player was in need of “upgrading” his game to suit the player he has now become, five years on from his England debut.”Three weeks ago, I spent a week working with KP here at Lord’s, and he works tremendously hard,” said Gooch. “He respects his practice and puts in the same amount of work as if he was playing a match, which is the right way. Obviously he’s desperate to make a score, like any player, but he’s got to transfer the way he prepares and practices into the middle, and that involves getting the balance between attack and defence right, or what I call how you manage your batting.”Everyone has skills, it’s how you apply those skills, and what balls you attack, and what shots you play against different bowlers in different conditions,” Gooch added. “Everyone’s game evolves, and KP has got to find the method that works for him at this moment in time. You might retain parts of the game you had before, but you have to upgrade and evolve.”Pietersen’s top score this summer was a chancy 80 at Edgbaston that nevertheless enabled England to win the match, but he himself admitted after that game that he had perhaps taken too much of his form for granted from England’s successful World Twenty20 campaign in the Caribbean back in May, in which he was named as Player of the Tournament for a tally of 248 runs from 180 balls, at an average of 62.”There’s a lot of Twenty20 cricket around these days, and maybe there is a bit of a cross-over and a conflict when each individual adapts from one format to the other,” said Gooch. “If you play all the formats, you have to find the balance, because the game has moved on, but the basis of Test cricket has not moved on as much. To score a Test match hundred, you still have to have patience and discipline, because you’re not going to score a hundred from 100 balls every time.”Strauss does not have quite the same conflict in his game seeing as he no longer plays in England’s Twenty20 team, and as a former opening batsman himself, Gooch had fewer issues about where he is currently at with his game. “Low scores are part of the game,” he said. “Every batsman is vulnerable when it’s moving around, the key is to show good technique and have some good luck, because if you hold your technique and the ball seams, it might miss the bat.”In the last two Tests he’s been out too early to say his game is not working,” Gooch added. “You accept days like today just as you do bright sunshine and a nice flat wicket. Every batsman gets low scores, the trick is to make it count when you get in. In the conditions we’ve had in the last month, there’ve been some decent balls going around, which is not an excuse, it’s part of the game. But confidence only comes from spending time at the crease.”

Spurs: Journalist cites clubs in Dybala mix

Italian journalist Giancarlo Padovan has named Tottenham Hotspur among the clubs in the mix to sign Juventus forward Paulo Dybala.

The lowdown: The end of an era

The 28-year-old is set to leave the Italian giants as a free agent in the summer and as a result, end a seven-year spell in Turin.

In that time the versatile Argentinian attacker has enjoyed a trophy-laden career, helping Juve towards five Serie A titles, four Coppa Italia successes and three Supercoppa Italiana victories.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, despite previously agreeing on terms to sign a new deal, Dybala is now believed to be moving onto pastures new with a host of clubs keen.

The latest: Spurs named

Speaking to Sky Italia, via CalcioNapoli1926 and translated by Sport Witness, Padovan has doubled down on previously reported interest from Tottenham in bringing the Argentina star to the Premier League.

The journalist said: “He knows that besides Juventus there are many important teams, he knows that he can go to Atletico or stay in Italy, at Inter. In England, there are Arsenal or Tottenham: in short, he will not remain unemployed.”

Padovan went on to claim that the 32-cap ace may struggle to earn the €10million (£8.4million) per year salary that he desires but the forward is determined to prove Juventus wrong.

It’s also suggested that Dybala will requisition UEFA Champions League football as a ‘minimum’ requirement from a new club.

The latest: The importance of top-four

Potential deals such as this one truly underline the importance of finishing inside the Premier League top four and subsequently qualifying for Europe’s elite competition.

Whilst a move for the man lauded as ‘extraordinary’ by Alessandro Del Piero could be difficult to complete due to the fierce competition, Antonio Conte would undoubtedly be desperate to add a player of Dybala’s calibre to the Lilywhite’s squad.

This season, the man valued at £36million (Transfermarkt) has scored 13 times and provided six assists in 29 appearances across all competitions – predominantly from a second striker role – so to sign him for zero initial transfer cost would be incredible business.

Bielsa must axe Leeds flop vs West Ham

Leeds United return to east London for the second time in a week to face West Ham United in the Premier League this afternoon.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side will be looking for revenge at the London Stadium after the Irons knocked them out of the FA Cup at the third-round stage last weekend.

The Argentine has had to deal with numerous injury problems throughout the season but there have been signs of that alleviating ahead of kick-off, which means the manager has a little more room to breathe in terms of team selection.

As such, there is a particularly huge call to make with Daniel James as the club-record summer signing has been woefully out of form since his £30m move from Manchester United.

To his credit, he has been one of several players to have been asked to carry the burden of the Whites’ attacking play in the absence of leading talisman Patrick Bamford.

However, he has still not really delivered anything of note.

Indeed, as per WhoScored, the Wales international has managed an average rating of 6.56 per game (the ninth-best in the team) and he has struggled to have much of an influence in the final third.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-transfer-rumours-and-news-2″ title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

There are five players who are more creative than him, having averaged only 0.9 key passes per game, whilst 0.8 dribbles per league outing sees him rank eighth in the whole squad for that statistic – a worrying sign considering he’s a winger by trade.

Former top-flight striker turned pundit Darren Bent summed James up well, back in November 2020 – when he was still at Old Trafford.

“The only thing about Dan James at times, for me, he’s a little bit headless,” he told Football Insider. “He’s shown great potential, when he first went to United he played really well, scored a few goals but at times he for me he’s fouled or he shoots sometimes when he should pass it, he’ll pass when he should shoot.”

Returns of just two goals and two assists from 17 appearances just aren’t good enough from your big-money star, so it’s time for Bielsa to be ruthless in his team selection by axing the £16.2m-rated lightweight.

The Hammers bullied him last weekend, he cannot be carried once again here this afternoon.

Ponting backs Hauritz to deliver

Ricky Ponting has backed Nathan Hauritz to deliver on grounds in New Zealand that may not be all that conducive to spin bowling. The ODI series gets underway on Wednesday at McLean Park in Napier where square boundaries are particularly short.”Regardless of the size of the grounds, spin bowlers have got a big role to play. You still have to take risks to try hitting spin bowlers for six in the shortened versions of the game,” Ponting was quoted as saying in . ”Nathan’s record against some very good opposition the last few years has been very good in all conditions. I expect him to play another big part in the series.”Hauritz, while hoping to repay his captain’s faith, was more realistic about what to expect in Wednesday’s encounter. ”I’m not going to be bowling 10 overs for 25 runs,” Hauritz said. ”It’s a matter of just accepting it’s going to be pretty tough and whenever I get the opportunity to bowl, just trying to stay on as long as I can.”I’ve watched a lot of footage of [New Zealand captain] Daniel Vettori bowling and change of pace is the key. I’ll try to keep them guessing. If they miss, you hit. That’s about it. The Kiwis all play spin pretty well so a mid-pitch ball is going to go for four or six.”It’s more like damage control. It does look pretty small here and they’re also very fast outfields. ‘Punter’ [Australian captain Ricky Ponting] has been a great advocate of mine. I’m just hoping to keep repaying the faith a little bit longer and try to get out of these games unscathed.”Australia and New Zealand drew the Twenty20 internationals 1-1; the second game, which featured a scintillating century from Brendon McCullum, only the second in the format in international cricket, was decided in the Super Over in which the hosts prevailed. McCullum’s 57-ball 116 included 12 fours and eight sixes; the ramp shot over short fine featured prominently in his innings. Ponting, though, expected McCullum to show more restraint in the 50-over version.”I’d be surprised if he plays the way he did in the T20. He’ll probably feel a bit more responsibility going into a 50-over game,” Ponting said. ”He’s one of their most experienced players and probably their batter in the best form at the moment so I think he’ll put it on himself to bat for longer periods of time. But there has been some conversation around the group about the way we should play if he tries to play that shot again.”Vettori added there had been plenty of hype surrounding the series. ”Playing Australia … this is one of the tournaments that I think the New Zealand public gets up the most for and we’ve performed pretty well in it overall,” he said. “Everyone has experienced how excited everyone is about the series. Three months ago it was all anyone was talking about. It means a lot to us. It’s basically our credibility within world cricket.”

Aston Villa: El-Ghazi may join Everton

Fabrizio Romano has raised the possibility that Aston Villa’s Anwar El Ghazi could be included in a deal to sign Lucas Digne.

The lowdown

According to the Italian journalist via Twitter, the Villans have been ‘working for days’ to agree a deal for the Everton left-back, whose future appears to lie away from Goodison Park after he had a row with Rafael Benitez and the Toffees went into the market to sign a £17m left-back in Vitaliy Mykolenko.

Meanwhile, El Ghazi – who joined Aston Villa permanently from Lille in 2019 after an initial loan spell – is into the final 18 months of his £31k-a-week contract. Transfermarkt value the Dutch winger at £9m.

The latest

Taking to Twitter to reveal the latest on the future of the two players, Romano outlined: “Aston Villa have been working for days to sign Lucas Digne. They’ve always been frontrunners – Chelsea out of the race.

“Talks on, not 100% agreed yet between clubs. El Ghazi also been discussed – nothing agreed on this point as Everton want cash. Next week will be key.”

The verdict

Is it a surprise that Villa are considering parting with El Ghazi?

Based on last season, yes. He was the club’s second-top goalscorer with an impressive 13 strikes in all competitions, inferior only to Ollie Watkins (17). Such form led to ex-Villa defender Alan Hutton praising him as “unstoppable”.

Steven Gerrard doesn’t seem to be convinced, though. Since the 41-year-old took over from Dean Smith in November, El Ghazi has only played 33 minutes of Premier League football.

On another note, having signed two wide attacking players last summer in Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray, will Benitez really want another at Everton in January? According to The Daily Mail, he’s more focused on strengthening in central midfield and up front.

In truth, El Ghazi may not be an effective bargaining chip from Villa if they want to execute a deal to sign Digne.

In other news, many Villa fans reacted to this move from Gerrard over the weekend

NUFC: Magpies in talks over Badiashile deal

An update has emerged on Newcastle United’s pursuit of Monaco monster Benoit Badiashile…

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Mail, the Magpies are plotting a swoop for the defender and are currently in talks with the Ligue 1 club over a deal for him this month.

The report claims that he is valued at £35m by the French side and it remains to be seen whether or not Newcastle are willing to meet their demands.

Buzzing

Eddie Howe will surely be buzzing with this news for several reasons. For starters, he will be delighted that the club are actively making moves to strengthen the defence, with talks having already been opened over a transfer for Badiashile.

It shows that they are not willing to waste time and wait until the end of the window to make signings. They want to strengthen the team as quickly as possible and this will please the ex-Bournemouth boss as his team is in dire need of reinforcements.

The Magpies are 19th in the Premier League and have only won one game all season. This shows that the current crop of players have not been good enough for a team that wants to avoid relegation, which is why PIF must splash the cash to improve Howe’s options ahead of the second half of the season.

One of Newcastle’s biggest issues has been their defence. They have conceded the most goals in the division (42) and the signing of Badiashile could improve their backline. The 20-year-old has averaged a solid SofaScore rating of 6.79 in Ligue 1 for Monaco this term, after managing a score of 6.91 in 32 starts last season.

He helped the French side to keep nine clean sheets in the 2020/21 campaign as he won 63% of his duels and made 2.4 tackles and interceptions per game. This shows that he can consistently provide strong defensive performances at the top level, winning the majority of his duels and helping his team to keep shutouts – something Newcastle have struggled with this season as they sit on one clean sheet after 19 matches.

Therefore, Howe will be buzzing with the prospect of Badiashile arriving at St. James’ Park. Not only is he a player with immense potential, given his performances in Ligue 1 at the age of 20, but he has also proven that he can perform in the here and now and the Magpies need the defensive monster in their bid to avoid relegation down to the second tier.

Ishant Sharma and Dinesh Karthik called up

Fast bowler Ishant Sharma and wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik have been included in India’s squad for the third and fourth ODIs against Sri Lanka

Cricinfo staff19-Dec-2009Fast bowler Ishant Sharma and wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik have been included in India’s squad for the third and fourth ODIs against Sri Lanka. The changes have been made after Sreesanth contracted swine flu and MS Dhoni was banned for two ODIs because of a slow over-rate in Nagpur.Karthik is likely to take Dhoni’s place in the XI for the matches in Cuttack and Kolkata while Virender Sehwag will lead the side. Yuvraj Singh, who missed the first two ODIs, because of a finger injury and illness, has been retained in the team. The challenge for Sehwag and Karthik will be to replace a successful captain and the world’s best ODI batsman, not only according to ICC’s rankings, which he has hegemony over, but also because of the variety of roles Dhoni plays. He has also been the in-form batsman for India in this series. In the first match, in Rajkot, he promoted himself after a strong start and didn’t let the run-rate come down in the middle overs, scoring 72 off 53 balls. In Nagpur, Dhoni came in at 81 for 3 and his century was instrumental in India’s utilising the Powerplay overs and reaching 300.The last one-dayer Dhoni missed was in 2007, against South Africa in Ireland, when he was down with viral illness. Since he became the ODI captain later that year, Dhoni rested during the Test leg of the Sri Lanka tour, but made sure he was there to play the one-dayers. Since he became the full-time captain, Dhoni missed just one international, the Napier Test earlier this year, because of back trouble. Sehwag, who led India then, was criticised for letting the game drift when Jesse Ryder and Ross Taylor put on a big partnership. Dhoni the batsman was missed too: following on, Gautam Gambhir had to play out of his skin to help India force a draw.Since then, Sehwag has said India need to groom a younger man as future captain, which makes sense because Sehwag is older than Dhoni. The selectors have not identified a designated vice-captain, but Sehwag has relinquished the position. Sehwag, however, also said he would be there to take on the leadership role in contingencies, which is where India find themselves now.Squad: Virender Sehwag (capt), Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Yuvraj Singh, Ishant Sharma, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh, Praveen Kumar, Ashish Nehra, Sudeep Tyagi, Pragyan Ojha.
