Conte wants Inter star at Spurs

Antonio Conte wants to bring his former defender Stefan de Vrij to Tottenham Hotspur, according to reports…

What’s the word?

The Guardian’s Dave Hytner claims that the Italian believes a major overhaul to the squad is needed following transfer discussions with chairman Daniel Levy in recent days.

Conte feels like he needs a centre-back, midfielder, right wing-back and a striker.

As a result, the Inter Milan star has emerged as a genuine target but he does not fit Levy’s desired profile for signings as the Dutch international will turn 30 next month.

Levy U-turn

The Spurs supremo must make a U-turn in order to land Conte his desired target.

After the departures of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld in recent windows, the Lilywhites have been left with a lack of experience in the backline and as Thiago Silva is proving at 37 for Chelsea, age isn’t a concern for a central defender.

De Vrij played a starring role in last season’s domestic triumph, where Conte led Inter to their first Serie A title in over a decade. He played 32 times on their way to being the best defence in the league, where he also averaged two aerial duels won, 1.3 interceptions and a 93.8% passing accuracy, via WhoScored.

It’s no wonder his former Lazio partner Mauricio waxed lyrical about his ability to ESPN.

“Stefan is a great defender and deserves to be at a big club. He’s very tall, he’s strong and fast, he runs a lot – he’s a monster” he said (via Football Italia). “He’s a calm defender who never gets agitated.”

Spurs’ defensive issues have somewhat continued this season as seen in recent games. Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganaga put in a bundle of errors against Chelsea in the first-leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final clash, whilst the latter’s poor form rumbled on against League One outfit Morecambe.

It would be foolish for Levy to turn his nose up at de Vrij.

Valued at £18m by CIES Football Observatory, the 6 foot 2 colossus may be available for a very decent fee. If Conte, a former Premier League title-winner, wants him, then their chairman must sanction the move at all costs.

The Italian’s past experience with him makes him a perfect January addition alone.

Dewald Nel signs two-year Kent deal

Dewald Nel, Scotland’s fast-medium opening bowler, has joined Kent on a two-year contract

Cricinfo staff29-Mar-2010Dewald Nel, Scotland’s fast-medium opening bowler, has joined Kent on a two-year contract. Nel, 29, has previous county experience with Worcestershire, and had been on Kent’s radar after an impressive performance in a recent trial.”We are delighted to sign a bowler of Dewald’s quality and experience,” said Paul Farbrace, Kent’s team director. “He is a credit to Cricket Scotland and the current coaching set up. I am looking forward to him making a telling contribution with us at Kent. I am also excited by the close link between our coaching staff and the Scottish staff. This could really be to the benefit of all concerned.”Nel, who moved to Scotland from South Africa as a teenager, made his first-class and list A debuts in 2004, and after a slow start to his international career has played in 18 one-day internationals, 10 Twenty20 internationals and 14 first-class games, with steady results. He is currently one of six players contracted full-time with Scotland, along with Majid Haq, Gordon Goudie, Kyle Coetzer, Calum MacLeod and, most recently, Richie Berrington.”While we are disappointed to lose Dewald for the majority of our summer programme, we are pleased that he has earned a second chance to play county cricket,” said Scotland head coach Pete Steindl. “Dee has worked hard since becoming one of our first full time contracted players and we are pleased this has paid off for him.”We have been impressed at the open and honest way Paul Farbrace and Kent have approached this deal and we now hope to build a mutually beneficial relationship, which will help Dewald become a major player for Kent and Scotland.”Kent’s bowling stocks had been depleted by the loss of Ryan McLaren and Martin Saggers at the end of last year’s season, and a potential deal with Stuart Clark, the Australian seamer, was scuppered by doubts over the bowler’s fitness.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Keinan Davis rumour

Nottingham Forest have been linked with a January move for Aston Villa forward Keinan Davis.

And, as to be expected, a number of Villa fans have been giving their thoughts to the transfer rumour on social media.

According to reliable reporter John Percy, Davis is one of three possible winter window loan additions at the City Ground alongside Arsenal’s Folarin Balogun and Norwich City’s Adam Idah.

Davis has made just one Premier League appearance this season and has scored just six goals in 86 games as a Villa player.

He has recently been linked with a move to Norwich to reunite with Dean Smith, but it appears as if a temporary move to the second-tier with Forest could also be on the cards.

The 23-year-old’s current deal expires in 2024, with Steven Gerrard a big fan of the forward after trying to sign him for Rangers.

Villa fans react

This is what these Villa fans had to say in reply to Percy’s claim on Twitter, with one believing he would be ‘unbelievable’ for Steve Cooper’s side in the Championship.

Vettori determined to 'lead New Zealand in a final'

They may be rank outsiders, and a team ravaged by injury, but don’t write off these New Zealanders just yet

Dileep Premachandran in Johannesburg02-Oct-2009

New Zealand are hoping Grant Elliott won’t have to miss the semi-final•AFP

Having already lost three key players to injury, New Zealand could be without Grant Elliott, Man of the Match against England, for the semi-final against Pakistan. Daniel Vettori, the captain, was confident though that New Zealand could overcome their semi-final jinx [only one final after eight appearances in the last four of global 50-over events] against Pakistan at the Wanderers on Saturday.”The momentum is with us, I think,” he said. “It’s a much more preferable to go into the semi-finals, knowing that we’ve won two big games and qualified top, whereas in the past we have scraped through. We go into the game with confidence. Their [Pakistan’s] spin bowling over the last year is very impressive. [Saeed] Ajmal and [Shahid] Afridi combine well, and coupled with a very good seam attack, and no obvious weakness in their batting, we know they can be a very good side. But they can be a little inconsistent like us, I suppose, and I’m hoping we can catch them on an off day.”Having already lost Jesse Ryder, Jacob Oram and Daryl Tuffey to injury, New Zealand are keeping their fingers crossed over Elliott. “Grant took part in training this morning and had an injection,” Vettori said. “It works when he bats but not when he bowls. We’ll leave it till the last possible minute before making a decision. It’s frustrating but we’re used to it. We’ve been through it before with New Zealand, even in the Twenty20 World Cup. It brought the group a little tighter and there was the realisation that the senior players have to step up more.”Having struggled to come to terms with slow pitches on a six-week-long tour of Sri Lanka, New Zealand have found the conditions in South Africa much more to their liking, especially in Johannesburg, where they beat both Sri Lanka and England. “There’s not really any secret to playing well here,” Vettori said. “We’ve come across very different wickets, and you have to have ability to adapt. This looks like a Sri Lankan wicket, with lots of runs in it. If so, we’re going to have to step up with the bat. We wanted to qualify top. That was a real incentive. Once we got in front, we wanted to finish it off. Wanderers has been good for us and we wanted to stay here, and have an extra day especially with our injuries.”On Thursday night, New Zealand won the Spirit of Cricket award at the ICC’s annual ceremony. Vettori, though, wants to leave South Africa with more than one bauble. “That will be the ultimate, if we can couple that with a major tournament. It means we are playing the game in the right spirit and winning games as well. There’s a perception that the spirit of cricket [award] goes to teams that are a little bit inconsistent and that’s probably fair for us at the moment. If we can turn it round and win a major tournament, it’ll be a great achievement for us.”Having lost in the semi-finals of the 2006 Champions Trophy [to Australia] and the 2007 World Cup [to Sri Lanka], Vettori also felt that the time was ripe to create some history. “We’ve always made the semi-finals and lost them,” he said. “We want to go past that, we want to change the script a little bit. Personally, it will be one of the most satisfying things I could achieve in my career if I lead New Zealand in a final. You never know what can happen after that.”There’s a lot of pressure on us to go past the semi-final, but they [Pakistan] are higher ranked and performing better than us of late. I always felt confident of making the last four, and this is a real test for us now.”Australia or England await if Pakistan can be overcome. “It doesn’t matter who we face in the final, we just want to get there,” Vettori said. “Any team will be tough. I suppose Australia have been playing the better cricket of late.”Nearly a decade ago, the brilliance of Chris Cairns inspired New Zealand to the only trophy win in their history. Vettori, who has carried forward the allrounder’s flame, has the opportunity to emulate his one-time team-mate. They may be rank outsiders, and a team ravaged by injury, but don’t write off these New Zealanders just yet.

Celtic: Devlin addresses Carter-Vickers clause

Celtic reporter Kieran Devlin has explained the ‘weird’ clause in Cameron Carter-Vickers’ contract.

The Lowdown: Regular under Ange…

Carter-Vickers made the move to Parkhead on deadline day, with the Hoops having an option to make a season-long loan permanent next summer.

The 23-year-old, on £20,000-a-week, has been a regular since making the move north, turning out on 13 occasions in all competitions, scoring twice.

He actually netted on his Hoops debut against Ross County and hasn’t missed a game since, proving to be a key figure under Ange Postecoglou.

As a result of his impressive form, talk has turned to next summer and the chances of Carter-Vickers swapping Tottenham for Celtic full-time.

The Latest: Devlin’s comments

Devlin ran a Q&A on The Athletic, where he was quizzed on multiple topics regarding the Hoops prior to their meeting with Ferencvaros.

One fan asked him to explain the situation with Carter-Vickers and the chances of the American making a permanent move to Parkhead, to which Devlin said:

“There’s a weird clause in his contract apparently that automatically extends his contract with Spurs by another year if he goes on loan, so he’s technically tied to them until 2023 not 2022. Celtic have an option to buy, though I don’t know for certain how much it is.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-15/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Around £5m?

A late summer window move for Carter-Vickers appeared to be a gamble, with the defender making just five senior appearances for Spurs in his five-year stay.

However, it is now looking to be an inspired piece of business from the Hoops, with Chris Sutton recently calling him ‘excellent’, so you’d expect the club and Postecoglou could be extremely keen to make a deal permanent as soon as possible.

Devlin isn’t sure on a specific option to buy fee, but it may well be around the £5m mark, a figure Tottenham wanted over the summer.

If that is accurate, then it could well prove to be a solid piece of business in the long run, especially if he continues to put in solid displays in green and white.

Samaraweera's 2009 dream run continues

The contest veered between bat and ball, dominating certain passages, but, at the end of the day, New Zealand had their backs firmly to the wall

Jamie Alter at the SSC27-Aug-2009Don Bradman hit just six sixes in his Test career. Denis Compton had three. Colin Cowdrey cleared the ropes 13 times in 114 Tests. Thilan Samaraweera is in good company, and he knows it.It’s a sign of the position he has reached in the Sri Lankan team, after an outstanding last 18 months with the bat, when Samaraweera replies to a question about his newfound penchant for sixes (In his first 52 Tests he had one, but he has hit four in the last two Tests.) “Well I know there are greats in this game who haven’t hit a lot, so I’m just fine with my record.”Welcome to the all-new Samaraweera. Last year when he spoke to the media during the series against India it seemed he was yet unsure of himself. He searched for words, he appeared shy. The media was something to be wary of, it seemed from his tone. Just over a year on, with the confidence of a man in sublime form and his position cemented, Samaraweera smiles broadly and answers questions with confidence, throwing up stats few would have known. He’s even hitting sixes.Samaraweera will never forget 2009. Two double-centuries in Pakistan. A career-threatening injury and the scars of the horrific attack in March. A successful rehabilitation in three months. Two centuries in consecutive Tests against New Zealand, and over 1000 runs in the calendar year. There are Test players who don’t experience that in a career. It’s been a richly deserved run. A poor tour of England in 2006 resulted in Samaraweera being dropped after the Edgbaston Test. It was a difficult period being away from the national side but he altered his game, spending long days and weeks with Chandika Hathurusingha, the Sri Lanka A coach. “I had to stay out of the team for 20 months and I thought that was too much,” said Samaraweera. “Honestly I did really well before that. I had a bad series in India but I played well against Pakistan and Bangladesh before the England series. I should have come back in six or seven months but didn’t. That made me hungry for runs.”He changed his attitude too, focusing more on scoring opportunities. The recall came for the tour to Australia late in 2007, where Samaraweera played one of two Tests. He was persisted with and cemented his place with a century and a fifty during the tour to the West Indies in early 2008. He hasn’t looked back. “When I came back Trevor Bayliss and Paul Farbrace [Sri Lanka’s coach and assistant coach] helped me score runs,” said Samaraweera, who has been in outstanding form over the past 18 months. “The main ambition was to stay at the crease but look to score runs. That changed everything for me.”The belief is evident. Having slowly inched toward Mahela Jayawardene and then outscored him today, Samaraweera spent 14 deliveries and roughly 20 minutes on 99. Jayawardene had been cut off on 92 and Chamara Kapugedera was playing his first Test since January. It was a testing period but the desire to play the senior role burned bright. “Being on 99 wasn’t important,” he said. “Kapugedera was back after a long time and was trying to settle down. I settled him and he settled me.”Settle he did, as New Zealand found out. Samaraweera repelled a good over from Chris Martin and raised his century, fittingly, with a cover drive. As most of his other productive shots, it was placed accurately in the gap. Immediately after getting his century, Samaraweera launched an attack, hooking the very next ball for six and then reaching and driving Jacob Oram through the covers for four. Daniel Vettori was driven with exceptional footwork inside-out past mid-off for four and a couple of overs later, on dancing feet, he lofted Jeetan Patel for consecutive boundaries. He repeated that shot soon after, and New Zealand’s attempts to make further inroads had been snuffed.”At the moment I am free because the team is doing well,” said Samaraweera. “Myself and [Tillakaratne] Dilshan want to take pressure off Mahela and [Kumar] Sangakkara because they’ve been under a lot of pressure over the last ten years.”Samaraweera’s form dipped in the three Tests against Pakistan last month, but a sublime 159 in Galle and a flawless 143 at the SSC marks an imposing series. “Full credit to the team management,” he said. “They have given me full authority to play positively. They encouraged me after the Pakistan series and said it was a matter of time. In the last Test against Pakistan I got back my rhythm. As for getting 1000 runs in eight Tests, it’s just good the team is doing well.”Thanks in no small part to Samaraweera’s unforgettable run of form.
