Three ways Arsenal can avoid an upset vs Crystal Palace

Arsenal will look to pick up their second win a week at the Emirates Stadium when they host Crystal Palace on New Year’s Day.

The Gunners bounced back from disappointing defeats against Everton and Manchester City – where they took the lead but lost 2-1 in both – by beating West Bromwich Albion in another tight and tense encounter on Boxing Day thanks to Olivier Giroud’s late header.

On Sunday, they come up against new Eagles manager Sam Allardyce, who has been tasked with taking Palace back to basics in order to move them away from the relegation zone.

The former England manager began his reign with a 1-1 draw against Watford at Vicarage Road on Monday, and he certainly has the attacking players to give the north London outfit a real problem in his second match in charge.

Here are three ways that Arsenal can prevent an upset at home to Crystal Palace…

Be clinical

If Arsenal are to avoid any chance of an upset against Crystal Palace, they must be clinical with their finishing.

After taking the lead away against Everton and Manchester City, the Gunners had more chances to extend their advantage but after failing to take those opportunities, they were punished.

Against West Brom on Monday, it took a late Olivier Giroud to finally make the breakthrough and Arsene Wenger won’t want a repeat of that tense affair on New Year’s Day.

Stop the supply to Benteke

With Sam Allardyce taking over at Crystal Palace and the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Andros Townsend and Christian Benteke at his disposal, the Eagles will go back to basics as they look to pull away from the relegation zone.

Allardyce will likely ask his wingers to fire in crosses to the tall and physical Benteke, and Arsenal defenders Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel will have to be at their strongest to prevent the Belgian winning any headers in the penalty area.

Stop Cabaye pulling the strings

The French midfielder had struggled to get a regular run in Crystal Palace’s first team under Alan Pardew, but Cabaye returned to the starting XI against Watford for Sam Allardyce’s first match in charge and marked it with a goal.

The France international likes to pull the strings in the middle of the park but if Arsenal can stop him supplying the Eagles’ wingers, they may just nullify the threat from their London neighbours.

Why it’s time for Mesut Ozil to stand up for Arsenal

Arsenal simply blew Manchester United away in the first 20 minutes of Sunday’s game. Their display of penetrative attacking football with laser-guided passing was wonderful to watch (unless you’re a middle aged Dutchman with the initials LVG), and they got their deserved rewards with three goals of exceptional quality, essentially killing the game before it had really begun. One of the main architects of this superb performance was a German international who often underwhelms at the Emirates, but whose undoubted quality has always been evident; Mesut Ozil.Ozil has always been a player who’s attracted the ire of some fans and pundits alike. His languid, elegant style sometimes seems almost too carefree and easy on the eye, as if he has nothing but supreme confidence in his own ability. Not the greatest at closing down the opposition or tracking runners, he has often been accused of not single-handedly dominating a game, when he has the definite technical ability and skill to do so.[ffc-gal cat=”arsenal” no=”5″]However, when he gets it right and all those tricks, flicks and caressed passes fall into place, he looks magnificent. Arsene Wenger will surely be aware that getting the best out of him on a consistent basis – and doing the same with the rest of his sides phalanx of stylish playmakers – could be the difference between similar league finishes as in the last few campaigns and actually putting a concerted assault on the Premier League title together.Ozil has been at the club since summer 2013, and his first two seasons at the club were, realistically speaking, a mixed bag. After an exceptional start to his time as a Gunner, during which time he seduced crowds all over England with his unquestioned natural talent and technical ability, his performances slowly began to drop off, and as a luxury player who seemed to never quite score enough goals it was easy to pick on him as not having as much impact on games as he should.Injuries and the lack of a winter break also did not help; some of his performances during the end of his first season were distinctly tired and lethargic. Missing a vital penalty against Bayern Munich in the Champions League knockout stages did not do much to endear him to unconvinced fans either. The second year was also hit and miss, with Ozil starting the season purposefully and confidently, before succumbing to an injury that kept him out until after Christmas. Naturally it took some time when he did return for his form to come back completely, and the suspicion still remained, despite several exquisite goals that season, that he faded out of difficult games all too easily.I think part of the problem is that supporters naturally focus their ire and wrath on players like Ozil after bad results. If he has not affected the game in a positive manner, and produced a definite output, they will focus on his perceived lack of work ethic and accuse him of not caring. What Ozil has to do is make sure his good days outweigh the bad, and he needs to keep scoring and being involved in goals.

Now is the time then for Ozil to step forward and prove that his decisive output in terms of goals and assists over the course of the season can outweigh the occasional lightweight performance and neglect of his defensive duties.

No matter where he plays, either off the front or coming in off the wings, his aim must be to get in and around the box as much as he can during matches, always demanding the ball and looking to either score or play a decisive pass every time he gets the ball. Sunday’s game was the perfect example of where he should be at all possible times when Arsenal are attacking.

Let other players do his water-carrying, Ozil needs to concentrate on what he does best; making the beautiful game look truly stunning.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Katia Aveiro commented on an Instagram post that showed an image of Ronaldo posing with his many individual awards, including his five Ballons d'Or.

The caption on the post read: "Earned, not given". Aveiro commented with five applause emojis.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The image was seen as a dig at Messi, who won his eighth Ballon d'Or on Monday. The attacker was voted the best player in the world in the last year after he guided Argentina to World Cup success in Qatar at the end of 2022.

However, many have criticised the move to give Messi the prize after Erling Haaland helped fire Manchester City to an incredible European and English treble, scoring 52 goals in all competitions last season.

  • WHAT'S MORE

Ronaldo and Messi dominated the Ballon d'Or awards for a decade from 2008. However, Ronaldo won his fifth and final prize in 2017 and came in second to Luka Modric the following year. Messi has won it three more times since then.

PSG player ratings vs Lens: Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi ensure Ligue 1 title stays in French capital

Paris Saint-Germain's main men delivered as the Ligue 1 leaders comfortably put away Lens at Parc de Princes on Saturday.

Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe starred in attack, each finding the net, as PSG's trio of first-half strikes lifted them past second-placed Lens – and likely sealed their title hopes with a 3-1 win.

Mbappe opened the scoring for the home side, completing a flowing team move with a guided shot into the bottom corner. Vitinha added a second 10 minutes later, lashing one in from 30 yards.

Messi got involved for the third, latching onto Mbappe's back-heel before finding the bottom corner to put the game beyond sight shortly before half time.

The duo have now combined for 23 goals this year, and this was perhaps the most important, a decisive third to put a potential title decider well out of sight. This win does not solve the litany of problems the Parisians face. But it should just about wrap up their 11th Ligue 1 crown.

GOAL rates PSG's players from Parc des Princes…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Gianluigi Donnarumma (6/10):

Forced into a big save inside two minutes. Sent the wrong way on Lens' penalty. Had little to do otherwise.

    Marquinhos (6/10):

Forced into some defensive work to deal with the rapid Lois Openda. Much better after a poor showing last week.

    Sergio Ramos (7/10):

Not the player he once was, but can still thrive in slower-paced games like this.

    Danilo Pereira (6/10):

Was consistently targeted by the Lens attack – and looked vulnerable.

    Midfield

    Achraf Hakimi (5/10):

Went down under a horrific challenge, but carried on. Struggled to impact the game at either end; he's been far short of his best in recent weeks.

    Carlos Soler (5/10):

    Allegedly on the pitch.

    Vitinha (7/10):

Banged one in from 30 yards out for his first PSG goal. Also assisted Mbappe. An encouraging showing from an oft-criticised player.

    Fabian Ruiz (5/10):

Gave away a silly penalty with a needless handball. Was mostly tidy in midfield otherwise.

    Nuno Mendes (7/10):

Almost scored a ridiculous goal after a mazy run downfield. One of PSG's most obvious attacking threats.

    Attack

    Lionel Messi (8/10):

Bagged PSG's third after a lovely link-up with Mbappe. Spent the rest of the game dribbling about and doing pretty things.

    Kylian Mbappe (8/10):

Opened the scoring with a classy finish, becoming PSG's all-time Ligue 1 goalscorer in the process. Assisted Messi. Had a few other chances, and was perhaps unlucky not to grab one or two more.

    Subs & Manager

    Juan Bernat (6/10):

Relieved Mendes after 75 minutes. Showed he can still have a role to play as a back-up.

    Warren Zaire-Emery (6/10):

A brief cameo from an ever-improving teenager.

    Christophe Galtier (7/10):

Few surprises in the XI ahead for one of the biggest contests of the year. PSG looked in trouble very early, but put the game beyond doubt with three first-half strikes. Galtier celebrated each goal with the vigour of a manager who knows his job is saved – for now.

Inside Real Madrid's malaise: From Casemiro's exit to Vinicius' World Cup hangover

The Spanish and European champions arguably sold the wrong midfielder last summer, while they're also still feeling the effects of Qatar 2022.

"We are Real Madrid," Carlo Ancelotti defiantly declared after his side lost the Spanish Super Cup final to Barcelona on Sunday.

His team had just been handily beaten 3-1 by their biggest rivals, thoroughly outplayed in a Clasico that appeared to signal a shift in power.

The veteran manager's statement was one of reassertion, even assurance. And in a sense, Ancelotti is right. Real Madrid are so used to success that even the smallest of blips are made to look catastrophic. They are not La Liga's newest "crisis club".

But they have looked strangely beatable since the World Cup. Indeed, Madrid have only won two of their last five games in normal time, and even in victory have been far from convincing.

Fatigue is certainly a factor but it is not the only explanation. There are other issues at play here.

Madrid let defensive midfield stalwart Casemiro leave last summer, and his ferocity and bite are certainly being missed.

Meanwhile, Karim Benzema has struggled for both form and fitness since being forced to pull out of France's campaign in Qatar.

However, it's not even solely a question of personnel. Some of Madrid's problems run deeper than that, as GOAL outlines below…

Getty ImagesMidfield issues

It was simply baffling how much Luka Modric ran at the World Cup. The Croatian captain never seemed to stop, his 37-year-old legs still chugging along deep into high-intensity knockout matches.

On his return to the Spanish capital, though, those legs have slowed. Instead, the captain has been unsteady, off the pace, even.

And he's not the only one. Modric and Toni Kroos, the two elder statesmen of Madrid's midfield trio have been far short of their best in recent weeks, with the latter able to play full matches but missing the crucial quality in possession that made him so valuable to Los Blancos.

Right now, then, it's looking like Madrid sold the wrong midfielder last summer. Casemiro is flourishing at Manchester United, while his replacement at the Santiago Bernabeu, Aurelien Tchouameni, looks exactly what he is: a promising prospect still learning his craft, as underlined by 64 forgettable minutes as Madrid lost to Villarreal in La Liga.

Fellow Frenchman Eduardo Camavinga also turned in an error-ridden performance in the Super Cup, with his mistakes contributing to both of Barca's first-half goals.

Fede Valverde has also been in the team, with his rise likely a factor in Casermiro's sale. He's been used mostly on the right side of the front three, but his future is certainly through the middle. And there have been some promising moments, but the Uruguayan has a habit of disappearing for long stretches.

There are other options, of course. Dani Ceballos can fill in, so too can Nacho Fernandez, but neither of the quality required.

Madrid, then, have serious cause for concern. Modric and Kroos have rebounded from poor stretches in the past, dragging themselves back into form because of their talent, work ethic and mental strength. However, with Casemiro no longer around to provide any support, Madrid's midfield is wavering.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe Ancelotti approach

The day before the 2022 Champions League final, Madrid did little in the way of preparation. Ancelotti delivered a brief team talk, before allowing the team to have a kickabout with their families on the pitch.

It was a scene of calm and Madrid went on to win the final, edging Liverpool 1-0 despite being under pressure for large parts of the game. It was an advert for Ancelotti's relaxed brand of man-management. After such a tranquil build-up, Los Blancos produced a composed performance, controlling the game, even when they didn't have the ball.

Therein lies the appeal of Ancelotti. He's a manager who works with a group of players he can trust, and utilises their creativity and tactical nous to take an almost laissez-faire approach to coaching. All he has to do is create the right environment.

But the whole thing is contingent on the atmosphere, the vibe. And perhaps it's starting to wear off.

Madrid have been predictable in recent weeks. Vinicius Jr has been swarmed every time he touches the ball, Benzema has dropped so deep that Madrid seldom play with an attacking option up top.

The managing-without-heavy-intervention style that has served this side so well is starting to look increasingly fallible. Madrid look like a team in need of a systemic shake-up, or at least a more hands-on coach.

Vinicius' drought

Vinicius Jr. is 22. He has already won every trophy in club football and shown that he is one of the best in the world at his position. At this point, he has very little to prove.

But there's something amiss at the moment. The winger is without a goal or assist in his last five games, and has cut a frustrated figure in recent weeks. Opposing teams have found that doubling the winger can help contain his bag of tricks and flicks.

When he's forced to slow the game down, Vinicius' influence on a game can be limited. That much was clear in Madrid's narrow win over Valladolid. Vinicius was nullified by 18-year-old Ivan Fresneda, who badgered the Brazilian throughout.

He is, of course, a product of the system. Although Vinicius is individually brilliant, he can't operate without the supreme talent around him. This poor run of form, then, isn't necessarily his fault. But he's looked badly exposed since the World Cup break, with Madrid suffering as a result.

Chances are he will recapture some of the magic that made him one of Europe's best players last year. Until then, Madrid will continue to lack incision in attack.

Carvajal's shortcomings

Dani Carvajal was brilliant in last year's Champions League final. Liverpool's Luis Diaz, then in brilliant form, was rendered largely ineffective by the Spaniard's disciplined display.

But he hasn't had too many good games since then. Carvajal's decline has been a steady process, with his lack of pace now being exposed on a game-by-game basis. The right-back is 32 and no longer has that burst of speed needed to make up for the positional shortcomings that have always been of slight concern.

On Sunday, Barcelona targeted Carvajal's side ruthlessly, deploying the rapid Alex Balde at left-back, while having Gavi drop into the space between Kroos and Carvajal. The right-back wasn't always positionally shrewd, and was left caught in space as Barcelona simply played around him.

Carvajal is still a regular for Spain and set to be a part of the Madrid set-up for at least another year. But it would not be a surprise to see Real speed up their search for a younger and quicker right-back.

Glamorgan feel Ashes effect but tougher times ahead

Glamorgan have announced much-improved results for the 2015 financial year aided by the impact of hosting an Ashes Test

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Mar-2016Glamorgan have announced much-improved results for the 2015 financial year aided by the impact of hosting an Ashes Test.Cardiff staged the opening match against Australia – ending late on the fourth day – which along with an agreement with creditors to write-off large amounts of debt have allowed the club to announce EBITDA (earnings before interest tax depreciation and amortisation) of £1,201,119. The equivalent figure for 2014 was £579,297, with an operating loss of £88,237.But Glamorgan’s chief executive, Hugh Morris, warned that the allocation of international matches in future years would render it difficult to maintain such figures and called upon the support of spectators to help the club deal with the likelihood of “a much reduced profit.”Glamorgan hosts two ODIs this season – one each against Sri Lanka and Pakistan – and a decent array of limited-overs matches in future seasons. But there are no further Tests allocated for the ground at present.”We are pleased with these financial results which reflect the hard work that went into successfully staging the first Investec Ashes Test match, driving incremental revenues across the business and good discipline around the control of expenses at the club,” Morris said”However, we must acknowledge that our programme of major matches in 2015 will not be repeated in 2016 which combined with the ongoing need to invest in our venue, our professional team and our community projects, is likely to lead to a much reduced profit.”Crucial to Glamorgan’s survival was an agreement reached with creditors to write off around 70% of the debt that threatened to drag the club under. In all, creditors including former chairman Paul Russell, Allied Irish Bank and Council agreed to write-off around £11,500,000 in debt.”The completion of the financial restructuring is a watershed moment for the club,” Glamorgan treasurer Hamish Buckland said. “It has been a tough journey from the difficult days of 2011, but we now have a firm financial base from which to move forward. Much work still needs to be done to continue to improve financial performance in a tough and competitive market, but the foundations have been built.”The club also hopes to develop its non-cricket business. They recently won permission to host up to three major concerts at their ground each year, with Simply Red the first to appear in July.”The staging of music events, the continued success of our year-round catering and events business and the growth of our cricket membership and following will be critical if we are to stay on track in the years ahead,” Morris said.”First and foremost, we are a cricket club and we continue to rely on the support of our members and ticket buyers who are absolutely critical to us.”We’ve added to the squad during the off-season and we’ve got a new head coach in Robert Croft who is determined to build on the progress we have made in the last couple of seasons.”That should be an exciting proposition for Glamorgan supporters and we are looking forward to the new season with great optimism.”
