Malan, Harris give Moores plenty to ponder

Dawid Malan and James Harris put on an unbroken 147-run stand for the eighth wicket to lift Middlesex from trouble to a position of strength

Peter Moores looked a man at ease in his new environment, watching play from the upper balcony in the Trent Bridge pavilion, chatting and laughing with the sundry players, coaches and support staff who emerged from the home dressing room to join him.You suspect he will take up permanent residence, given the upbeat welcome the former England coach was afforded when Mick Newell, Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket, introduced him during the county’s win over Worcestershire last week. Newell has shouldered responsibility for Nottinghamshire’s fortunes since he became first-team coach in 2002 and feels the time is right for someone to approach the challenge with a fresh perspective. What it means for his future remains to be seen. His willingness to put the county’s fortunes first, with the threat of relegation likely to colour the remainder of the season, can only be admired. Moores, in his consultancy role, will share the burden until a decision about what happens next is made in September.Among his many qualities, Moores has reputation for bringing on young players. That experience will be useful immediately, given the current profile of Nottinghamshire’s bowling attack. Brett Hutton, Luke Wood and Jake Ball have 29 first-class matches between them but all played here. Both Luke Fletcher and Andy Carter, injured in their last match, are sidelined for the immediate future. Meanwhile, Ben Hilfenhaus, the overseas player, took so much on in bowling their overs that Nottinghamshire decided he had to have a rest. When Middlesex were 165 for 7, the view from Moores’ perch will have looked pretty pleasing. With the ball swinging under an overcast sky, a batting line-up including two former England openers and the current one-day captain had found the going tough. However, the 41.2 overs that remained in a day interrupted by only one heavy downpour yielded no further wickets. Dawid Malan and James Harris instead added 147 more runs, the partnership itself chanceless until late in the evening, even though Malan had been given a let-off on 29 when Samit Patel spilled a low chance at point.Malan walked off with a career-best 159 not out, having batted for five and three-quarter hours. That he did not offer another chance in that part of the field alone was perhaps surprising, given that he scored 60% of his runs either square of the wicket or behind square on the off side, which Moores will note when he studies the data. There were other chances, though. Two were spilled by Brendan Taylor in the slips (Nick Compton on 19 and Eoin Morgan on 0), although the Zimbabwean atoned with a stunner at short extra cover to see off Ollie Rayner. Patel dropped his second of the day, again at point, as Harris had a life on 64.It has been a stop-start season for Malan, who had a poor time in 2013 but recovered his red-ball form impressively last season. He suffered a broken hand in the opening Championship match, also against Nottinghamshire, and has missed further cricket with a groin injury. This is only his third first-class match. On a pitch with plenty of grass left on, Middlesex lost their openers within the first eight overs, one each to Wood, who ripped out Joe Burns’s middle stump, and Ball, who dismissed Sam Robson leg before, both batsmen succumbing to inswing.Compton’s let-off cost nothing, with Hutton finding a little extra bounce with his next delivery and Chris Read taking the edge. That made it Nottinghamshire’s morning, although it should have been better still.Morgan and James Franklin were both dismissed soon after lunch. Morgan, caught at second slip off a Gurney no-ball, had not added to his 15 when he followed left-armer Wood’s away swing and nudged the ball into the gloves of wicketkeeper Read; Franklin was give out leg before by umpire Russell Evans, who judged that an inswinger from Gurney struck him on the pad before he got a bat on it.Nottinghamshire’s bowlers continued to exploit the conditions to good effect. John Simpson, driving, was caught by Hutton at third slip off Gurney, then Taylor redeemed himself by taking a blinder at short extra cover, diving to his right, as Steven Mullaney became the fifth seamer to take a wicket.Thereafter, though, the day was transformed, with Malan punishing Nottinghamshire heavily for allowing him a life and Harris, who is having a fine season with the ball, proving not for the first time that he is more than competent with the bat. Nottinghamshire have some work to do to get something out of this match, which Middlesex will see as a chance to reinforce their challenge for the title. You suspect that Moores, who professes to love a challenge, has a sizeable one.

CSA renews deal with SuperSport till 2021

The new deal will run until the end of April 2021 and includes the broadcaster’s hosting rights for all home internationals matches played in this period.

Firdose Moonda15-Apr-2015Cricket will remain the property of pay-television consumers in South Africa, after CSA renewed their deal with SuperSport for the next six years. The new deal will run until the end of April 2021 and includes the broadcaster’s hosting rights for all home internationals matches played in this period.Fans without access to the channel should still be able to watch the South African team’s home matches because SuperSport provides the state broadcaster, SABC, with a live feed. The same does not apply when South Africa play abroad or to domestic matches, which are only available to watch on SuperSport. SuperSport will broadcast a minimum of 60% of matches in the domestic one-day cup and 20-over tournament but no live first-class cricket.Despite that, television viewership of cricket in South Africa is growing according to sports marketing agency Repucom. In Johannesburg last week, the agency revealed that the viewing time of the average South African cricket fan has increased by 21%, helped, no doubt, by the availability of cricket to watch.Last October, SuperSport launched a temporary 24-hour news channel which ran until the end of the World Cup and broadcast series including India’s tour of Australia and the triangular competition which followed, as well as Sri Lanka’s trip to New Zealand. South African pay-television users also have every match of the IPL shown live but for the first time in many years, they do not have any coverage of the series between West Indies and England. SuperSport has not acquired the rights for that series.

Zimbabwe let World Cup dream slip away

Harare 1995, Sheikhupera 1998, Harare 2013 and now, just 20 runs away from Brisbane 2015. Five fours. Three sixes and a two. So close. But Zimbabwean eyes would not have adored the end result.

Firdose Moonda01-Mar-2015Harare 1995, Sheikhupera 1998, Harare 2013 and now, just 20 runs away from Brisbane 2015. Five fours. Three sixes and a two. All the extras Zimbabwe gave away. So close. As Franki Valli and the Four Seasons crooned, “So close, so close and yet so far.”But Zimbabwean eyes would not have adored the end result. They started ahead, they clung on, they did the hard grind and then they saw it, and perhaps their World Cup dream as well, waste away.”We targeted this match,” Brendan Taylor, Zimbabwe’s stand-in captain admitted. That is mostly because it was the only match left to target in a bid to reach the quarterfinals. With three wins being the minimum criteria, Zimbabwe identified UAE, Ireland and one of Pakistan or West Indies as the teams they needed to beat to reach the knockouts. UAE were dealt with, albeit in tense fashion, West Indies did the dealing in Canberra in Chris Gayle’s awakening and Ireland are still to come. So beating Pakistan was a must, despite the history.Zimbabwe have only beaten Pakistan three times in 48 ODIs and never at a World Cup. On paper, they were stretching themselves by hoping to change that here. On form, they were not.Pakistan’s batting gave way against India and had not put itself back together by the time it met West Indies. In fact, it had crumbled even further to the point where it seemed they would need more than a week and a trip across the Tasman to recover. They still need more than that and Misbah-ul-Haq knows it. He described them as being in “deep trouble” because of a top-order that cannot get it right but Zimbabwe seem to be in deeper trouble with their death bowling.Although they conceded fewer runs than they have in the last ten overs in their other matches in the tournament so far, they still leaked 73 in the final 10 and Tinashe Panyangara was still hit off his lines. But because of the work they had done earlier though, they believed “half the job was done,” at the break and expected to chase down 236.Pakistan had only had two partnerships over fifty runs in their innings, Zimbabwe had the same. Pakistan had a seventh-wicket stand of 47, Zimbabwe had a ninth-wicket one. So where did it go wrong?”We found ways to get out at crucial periods and that’s not helping the team,” Taylor said. Taylor, Hamilton Masakadza and Sean Williams should have seen it home but all three of them were the cause of their own demise. Unlike Chamu Chibhabha and Sikandar Raza, they were not worked over in the same way by the aggression of Mohammad Irfan and Wahab Riaz and should have been able to see them off better. “It was a good challenge,” Taylor said. “They came out and made it difficult for us. They bowled some heavy balls. But we had some experienced players who did not kick on.”Taylor identified lapses in temperament as being behind that inability to close out matches and said he did not expect it to be fixed quickly, despite the positive influence new coach Dav Whatmore has had. “There are some mental flaws as individuals which are costing us,” he said. ” He has been very good for us, he knows how to get into our minds but he has only been with us for six weeks.”They only have a third of that time left in this tournament, so its unlikely any major changes can be made in that time. But Zimbabwe have left themselves needing to beat both Ireland and India if they hope to show tangible results for the overhaul of their system and their attitudes. Taylor is not ruling that out.”There is some added pressure. Ireland have been playing some good cricket but we’re 80% there,” he said. “If we can close that gap, we’re heading in the right direction. India have been on the road for a long time. We saw hat happened at Eden Park the other day when New Zealand beat Australia. There’s no reason why we cant have the belief we can win.” Unless they do, the 20 runs they fell short in Brisbane may be the ones they remember more painfully than anything else.

Lanning, Healy give Australia series

Alyssa Healy made an unbeaten 25 off 12 to pull Australia home with one ball to spare in the third women’s T20 international against West Indies in Melbourne. Australia wrapped up the series 3-0 with one match remaining as captain Meg Lanning led the chase of 150 with a 35-ball 51.Elyse Villani contributed 28 at the top of the order but it was Lanning who provided the innings momentum, striking eight fours as she took Australia past 100. However, Anisa Mohammed sent back Jess Cameron and Ellyse Perry in successive overs after Lanning was bowled by Shanel Daley. Alex Blackwell followed for a slow 19 as Australia were reduced to 6 for 120, needing 30 off 16.Healy stepped up, hitting a six and two fours off her first five deliveries to bring the asking-rate back under control. Erin Osborne hit the first ball of the 19th over for four to make it 12 needed off 11 and Australia eased home after that.West Indies had made 6 for 149 after choosing to bat, with Stafanie Taylor striking 11 fours and a six in scoring 78 off 58 upfront. Shemaine Campbelle struck 24 off 13 at the death, while Rene Farrell and Sarah Coyte picked up two wickets each. The fourth T20 will be played on Sunday in Sydney before the four-match ODI series starts next week.
