India U-19s continue to dominate

A round-up of the fourth match-day of the Quadrangular Under-19 series in India

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Oct-2011India Under-19s continued to dominate in the youth quadrangular series in Visakhapatnam, registering a comprehensive six-wicket win against Australia Under-19s.Batting first, Australia was in trouble straightaway, losing their top three for only three runs to Sandeep Sharma. Ashton Turner and captain Kurtis Patterson essayed a brief recovery, but once offspinner Baba Aparajith broke the stand, none of the lower middle could get going as Australia folded for 173 in 48.5 overs. In reply, India were solid, knocking off the runs with 17.4 overs to spare. The chase was built around a number of 30 and 40 something cameos from the top order – Aparajith top scored with an unbeaten 48. This is India’s fourth win in four games in the series.A team performance helped Sri Lanka Under 19s to a two-wicket win against West Indies Under-19s.Choosing to bat, West Indies slumped to 94 for 5 in 28 overs, before a 152-run stand for the sixth wicket between Kavem Hodge and Justin Greaves carried them to a competitive total. Fast bowler Lahiru Madushanka and left-arm spinner Amila Aponso were the pick of the bowlers, claiming five wickets between them, as West Indies put on 258 for 8 in their 50. Sri Lanka’s top and middle order all contributed in the chase, with each of the top seven scoring between 22 and 47. While West Indies kept pecking away at the wickets, the cameos were enough to carry Sri Lanka home with nine balls in hand. This is Sri Lanka’s third win in four games, while West Indies are yet to register a win in the tournament.

Australia not looking to experiment against Canada

As they approach the end of the group stage, Australia are looking to dispatch opponents as efficiently as they can. Canada are hoping for a final World Cup hurrah

John Davison could open in his last match for Canada•AFP

The Big PictureAs Ricky Ponting was leaving the press conference, a scribe offered a friendly bit of advice: “Please bowl first, mate.” Ponting turned, smiled and said, “Ha! Bowl first eh?” before gliding out of view. Despite Ireland’s commendable performance, and two honourable fights by Canada and Kenya, Australia taking on an Associate still makes people wonder how long the game will last. A tired journalist’s view is, “Canada bat first, get bowled out for a paltry score, let the chase be done with and let’s hit the pub”. It’s a view that might be shared by Australian fans too, though they might want to see the spinners do a better job, and Ricky Ponting hit form with a big innings. The underdog fan might want a minor miracle. What about the players?Ashish Bagai, Canada’s captain, was asked a direct question about it: Will Canada try to play 50 overs and be satisfied with the honor earned in doing that? If he found it condescending, or realistic, Bagai didn’t show it. He just laughed a laugh that was open to interpretation before saying, “This is our last game. We will like to end it with a win. We will try doing that”.For his part, Ponting said, “The time for experiments is over. We have three games in a week’s time before the quarters and we want to be playing at our best. We are looking to win tomorrow’s game comfortably.”For Canada this is as big as it gets. It is their final appearance on this stage before they disappear for four more years, and maybe more, depending on the ICC’s designs for 2015. It is also John Davison’s last game and Canada are thinking about the possibility of sending him to open. It will also be the last sighting of Bagai, a fabulous wicketkeeper, and Balaji Rao, a legspinner who has dared to flight, drift, and turn, something uncommon in the bigger teams.Australia’s 33-match unbeaten run in World Cups is unlikely to end tomorrow but they have to iron out a few wrinkles. Ponting’s form hasn’t been too flash and he knows it. “I would have liked to score more runs in the game against Zimbabwe but was run out. The other games too were the same. Getting 30 or 40 is not what you are after; you have to make big scores. Since we have not played too many games, we are out of touch.” The spinners haven’t set the world on fire as Ponting said the other day. Their batsmen will also be tested by Rao.Form guide (most recent first)

Canada: LWLLL
Watch out for…Bagai’s wicketkeeping: MS Dhoni is the best at stumpings and Kumar Sangakkara is solid all round but Bagai has looked the most fluent and natural keeper in the competition. He is quick on his feet, uses soft hands, has a wonderful anticipation, and oozes confidence when he stands up to the medium-pacers. Of course Canada rarely get close to winning, and so we will never know how good Bagai is in pressure situations, but there is enough skill to make you watch him keep. After Shahid Afridi, Balaji Rao has to be the one of the best legspinners out there. While Afridi snares his victims with sliders and variations in pace, Rao tries to treat your senses. The slow amble to the crease, the ripping release, the courage to flight, the ability to get it to drift, and the turn he can extract, makes him a neat package to watch. When Brad Haddin is at his best, he reminds you of Damien Martyn, especially when he unfurls that silky drive through extra cover. The problem is he suddenly changes into Shane Watson. For a man who can time the ball so well, he often goes hard at the ball and tries to crash it up and over the field. Perhaps he still sees himself as a wicket keeper-batsman, whose job is to score quick runs, rather than a top-class batsman. Ponting urged him to convert his starts and that’s a sign that the captain wants Haddin to have higher ambitions.Pitch and conditionsThe pitch is the same one on which Australia played Kenya. So it is bound to get slower and aid turn. It will be interesting to see how the Australian batsmen fare against the spinners.Team newsConsidering the workload in playing three games in quick succession, Australia are likely to rest Shaun Tait and give John Hastings a go.Australia (probable): 1 Shane Watson, 2 Brad Haddin (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Cameron White, 6 Michael Hussey, 7 Steven Smith, 8 John Hastings, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Brett Lee, 10 Jason KrejzaCanada (probable): 1 Hiral Patel, 2 John Davison, 3 Zubin Surkari, 4 Ashish Bagai (wk), 5 Jimmy Hansra, 6 Rizwan Cheema, 7 Ruvindu Gunasekara/Parth Desai, 8 Harvir Baidwan, 9 Khurram Chohan, 10 Henry Osinde, 11 Balaji RaoStats and trivia Ricky Ponting is only player to have scored 1000 World-cup runs as a captain. He is the second after Tendulkar to score over 1600 runs in World Cups.Ashish Bagai is third captain-wicketkeeper to score fifty on two or more occasions in the World Cup. Kumar Sangakkara and Alec Stewart are other two. Quotes”We don’t have any time to worry about experimentation and getting our skills right. It’s about going full steam and playing the brand of cricket that holds good in bigger games”
“Balaji Rao has done really well for us in this tournament, right from the warm-up games. He brings great value in the dressing room too and mentors the other young spinners.”

Manchester United: Red Devils keen on Facundo Farias

Manchester United are reportedly keen on a summer deal for Club Atletico Colon star Facundo Farias.

The Lowdown: Farias profiled

Farias is just 19 years of age and is primarily an attacking midfielder who can also play on the wing.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-updates/” title=”Latest Man Utd updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Valued at £11.7m by Transfermarkt, the Argentinian has scored 10 goals and registered seven assists in 65 appearances for his current employers.

He is under contract until 2025 after penning an extension earlier this year, but it looks as if a move to Europe and possibly Old Trafford could be on the cards.

The Latest: United links

Sports Witness relayed an update from AS regarding Farias, labelled as a ‘rough diamond’ in the report. They claim that United have shown the ‘most interest’ from England, while elsewhere on the continent PSG and Roma are also name-checked.

Farias is now likely to ‘pack his bags’ and make a move to Europe, with England, and therefore Old Trafford, an ‘appetising destination’.

The Red Devils are also extensively linked with Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, so it looks like we now know Erik Ten Hag’s first priority position in the market.

The Verdict: One for the future…

It looks set to be an extremely busy summer when it comes to incomings and outgoings ahead of ten Hag’s first season in charge.

Midfield appears to be an area that needs numbers, with reports suggesting there is a 95% possibility of de Jong signing for the Red Devils.

He’d strengthen the club’s central midfield ranks, whereas a move for Farias would bolster the club’s attacking midfield ranks, with Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata out of contract this summer.

Farias could then learn first hand from Bruno Fernandes and is also able to turn out on the wing when required, and with a number of top European sides keen, United could land a future star in Farias while adding immediate depth in various attacking positions.

Bowen likely to miss Sevilla and Villa

The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas has provided the latest update on Jarrod Bowen’s injury ahead of West Ham’s Europa League clash against Sevilla.

The Lowdown: Bowen excelling for West Ham

Bowen has gone from strength to strength this season, having emerged as one of the Premier League’s most exciting talents. The 25-year-old has netted eight goals and produced 10 assists as West Ham continue to make a bid for Champions League qualification.

However, in a huge blow for David Moyes and co, the former Hull City winger suffered a heel injury during the Irons’ 1-0 loss to Liverpool at the weekend.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-4/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Bowen injury update

On Sunday, West Ham’s official website claimed that Bowen had not sustained any significant damage with his heel injury.

However, Thomas took to Twitter to dampen what was seemingly positive news. Speaking ahead of the Irons’ upcoming fixtures, he claimed: “Jarrod Bowen likely to miss games against Sevilla and Aston Villa. More info #WHUFC”.

The Verdict: Could be worse…

It certainly is a setback if Bowen is ruled out of action for the first leg of their tie against Sevilla in the Europa League, and it would come as a huge blow for Moyes, who at times has been heavily reliant on his top scorer from this season.

West Ham have now dropped down to sixth in the Premier League, three points behind fourth-placed Arsenal, who have three games in hand, which makes a top-four finish now seem improbable.

However, it seems that the outcome could have been a lot worse. Bowen is only set to miss one game in either competition, so if he can return quickly (possibly for the second leg against Sevilla) and maintain his superb form, the Hammers should be able to overcome the setback of his absence.

Celtic handed boost ahead of Old Firm

Celtic are back in action tomorrow with another Old Firm clash, this time in the Scottish Cup semi-final as the Glasgow rivals face off for a place in the final.

Their last game saw the Bhoys pick up another three points thanks to a blistering 7-0 victory against St. Johnstone at Celtic Park.

As for Rangers, they were in action on Thursday as they took it to extra time to secure their place in the semi-finals of the Europa League, eventually defeating Sporting Braga 3-1 at Ibrox.

Looking ahead to this latest showdown, it seems as though the Hoops have been handed a big injury boost that could have a huge impact on whether or not they secure a win on this occasion.

What’s the news?

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s clash, Ange Postecoglou revealed in his latest press conference that Hoops midfielder David Turnbull is fit enough to play after picking up a knock in last weekend’s league game.

The midfielder had only just come back from a big injury last month before picking up this knock against Saints.

However, now that the Hoops boss has shared this news, it will be a huge weight off a lot of people’s shoulders at Parkhead.

Great news for Postecoglou

In terms of what the 22-year-old offers his side, having scored five goals and provided five assists in 21 league appearances this season, the midfielder is a creative and attacking threat from the middle of the pitch.

In those appearances, the former Motherwell star has earned himself an overall WhoScored performance rating of 7.56, making him the highest-rated player currently in the squad.

With Rangers in the way of seeing Celtic make it to the final, having a player who is able to unlock teams by creating goalscoring chances or scoring goals himself such as Turnbull could well be the difference between winning and losing.

To highlight how dangerous the Scottish international is, only Liel Abada (78) has made more shots at goal in the league than Turnbull (69), who has also completed the second-highest number of crosses (141) for the Hoops this season, behind only Jota (190).

Taking this into account, it’s safe to say that having the midfield maestro available this weekend is great news for Postecoglou and Celtic’s chances of getting to the final.

'We got outplayed' – Michael Clarke

Australia captain Michael Clarke has said his side were outplayed by Sri Lanka in the only Twenty20 game between the two teams

ESPNcricinfo staff31-Oct-2010Australia captain Michael Clarke has said his side were outplayed by Sri Lanka in the only Twenty20 game between the two teams before they play three one-day internationals starting on November 3.Sri Lanka cruised to a seven-wicket win at the WACA, restricting Australia to 133 for 8, their lowest ever total at home.”They [Sri Lanka] played really well,” Clarke said. “We were a little bit disappointing with the bat, especially up front losing four wickets early. I think we got outplayed. No doubt conditions were different to what we just faced in India, but look, we’ve had great preparation here, the nets are very similar to what we faced out in the middle so we have no excuses. Sri Lanka bowled really well.”Kumar Sangakkara made an unbeaten 44 off 43 balls to see Sri Lanka home with 3.3 overs to spare, sharing a 71-run partnership with Tillakaratne Dilshan. Both batsmen looked at ease at the crease, unlike the Australians, who struggled with the bounce offered by the WACA pitch.”They played the cross-bat shots really well on a bouncy wicket,” Clarke said. “I think we can learn from that, I think we tried to bowl a bit too short because there was a bit of pace and carry.”Sangakkara was full of praise for the way his bowlers and fielders performed. “We played a pretty good game from the start. We knew them winning the toss was an advantage for them but it just kept getting better for the batsman. I think the way we played first up with the choice of deliveries and the way we fielded, it was a great achievement to keep them down to around 130.”

di venuto shines as wickets tumble

Durham’s Michael Di Venuto made a fine century but was the only batsman who came to terms with the Chester-le-Street pitch as 17 wickets fell on the first day against Yorkshire

16-Aug-2010
ScorecardDurham’s Michael Di Venuto made a fine century but was the only batsman who came to terms with the Chester-le-Street pitch as 17 wickets fell on the first day against Yorkshire. With both teams in contention for the title, Durham recovered from 54 for 5 to reach 213 and Yorkshire reached the close on 125 for 7.Tim Bresnan left afterwards to link up briefly with the England squad in London, but he was outshone by Ajmal Shahzad, who took a career-best 5for 51. Bresnan took only one wicket but was sent in to bat at number three and made 25 before heading for Newcastle Airport. He will return to Durham on Wednesday if not required for the Oval Test and during his absence will be replaced by Oliver Hannon-Dalby.Yorkshire put Durham in and the ball nipped around under heavy morning cloud, but Shahzad had to settle for coming on as first change. He pinned Gordon Muchall lbw with his fourth ball and two balls later produced a beautiful delivery to knock over Dale Benkenstein’s off stump.Shahzad later rattled the stumps twice in three balls as he was rewarded for bowling full and straight with just enough movement to beat the bat. The fall of 17 wickets was unlikely to have unduly worried pitch liaison officer Mike Denness. There was some variable bounce, but generally the bowling was better than the batting and only Phil Mustard gave Di Venuto, who made 117, any support for Durham.Yorkshire’s most obvious resistance came from Anthony McGrath, whose 28 not out took him past 1,000 runs for the season, as Mitch Claydon removed the openers and then Steve Harmison took three wickets. Harmison’s victims included Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale, who was given out lbw first ball but indicated that he had nicked it.Two Durham batsmen were also reluctant to depart as neither Mustard, who made 53, nor Mark Stoneman thought they had touched the ball when given out caught behind. Di Venuto edged Steve Patterson just short of Adil Rashid at second slip on 9 and grafted his way to 43 at lunch. Both he and Mustard were beaten in the first few overs of the afternoon, but as the cloud broke up runs suddenly began to flow. They put on 115 and the next highest stand was 30 for the last wicket, in which Harmison equalled his season’s best score of 4. Di Venuto was on 97 when Harmison was dropped at third slip by Jonny Bairstow off Shahzad.Although he held two catches, that was Bairstow’s second miss and it allowed Di Venuto to complete his fourth century in three seasons against Yorkshire. He turned a short ball from Richard Pyrah to fine leg for his 14th four to reach his hundred off 156 balls and straight drove the next for another four to bring up the 200 and earn a batting point.

Aston Villa: Neville slams Calum Chambers

Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville hit out at Aston Villa defender Calum Chambers during his display against Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

The Lowdown: First start at Villa

Chambers was making his first start as a Villa player after joining from Arsenal last month, with Steven Gerrard making four winter additions in his first transfer window in charge.

The 27-year-old came in for the suspended Ezri Konsa in the only change from the 3-3 draw with Leeds United on Wednesday, but he had an afternoon to forget at St James’ Park.

The defender gave away possession 13 times, was second-best in nine of his 13 aerial and ground duels (70%) and was also unsuccessful with six of his nine long balls. [SofaScore]

The Latest: Neville’s comments on Chambers

Chambers brought down Joe Willock on the edge of the area on the half-hour mark, with Neville labelling the defender ‘clumsy’ twice on Sky Sports’ live broadcast.

Kieran Trippier scored the resulting free-kick, with his effort proving to be the winner for Eddie Howe’s side.

The Verdict: Opportunity missed for Chambers

Chambers would have been hoping to catch Gerrard’s eye after being preferred over Kortney Hause, but you’d expect that the Villa boss will bring Konsa straight back into the side against Watford next weekend after what he saw from the new arrival on Sunday.

You could perhaps put the 27-year-old’s disappointing display down to rustiness, with his only two Premier League appearances for Arsenal this season coming way back in August, but he cannot afford many more of these insipid performances.
