Arsenal could sign a new Robert Pires in Noa Lang

Arsenal could sign their next Robert Pires in Club Brugge starlet Noa Lang amid a recent transfer update on his future.

What’s the story?

According to Dutch publication Voetbal24, the winger is interested in a move to the Emirates in the upcoming transfer windows amid speculation linking him with a move away from Belgium.

The report adds that Mikel Arteta’s side are firmly in the race to sign Lang, with Serie A giants Milan also said to be in the running too, but that he prefers a move to north London.

Arsenal’s new Pires

After a superb season last year with the Belgian side – the 22-year-old netted an impressive 17 times across all competitions – it’s no surprise that Arsenal have entered the race to sign him.

Dubbed a “phenomenon” by Belgian sports journalist Peter Vandenbempt, Lang made history when he became the first player in more than a half century to mark his Ajax debut by scoring a hat-trick – something that left manager Erik ten Hag raving about him after the game.

The Amsterdam club’s manager said: “He showed (his talent) today and I am very happy with that. Noa shows (his ability) it during training and during the reserve matches. And today he has also clearly shown it at the highest level too.”

In his pomp at Highbury, Pires was similarly prolific, scoring 15 goals in the Premier League alone in the 2002/2003 campaign, before netting 14 times in back-to-back campaigns the following two years.

Just like Pires, Lang also operates from the left, and it appears not only does he have an eye for goal, but he also Pires’ craft and vision to boot too.

After a fine performance against KRC Genk, Belgian analyst Filip Joos, said: “He is currently the best player in the league, I think. That‘s really pure class. He sees it, makes eye contact with Mechele who finishes it fine. Fantastic goal, because that pass is also ideal. He is constantly moving, he swings across the field, he likes to dribble, but he will always play it at the right time.”

Given that ability to score and create goals from out wide, there’s certainly a lot to like about how similar the 5 foot 10 speedster is to Pires.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are eyeing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s successor in this star…

Newcastle team news vs Leeds

Steve Bruce has now dealt a triple injury blow to Newcastle United ahead of their game at home to Leeds United in the Premier League on Friday night.

The Lowdown: Pressure mounts

There is now significant pressure on Bruce to get a result against Marcelo Bielsa’s team at St. James’ Park.

The North East club currently sit in 19th place in the Premier League table on just one point, with the Whites sat just above them in 17th (Premier League).

The Latest: Team news

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match against the Whites, Bruce has now revealed that it will come ‘too soon’ for Callum Wilson, Jonjo Shelvey and Paul Dummett.

It means that he will now have to try and find a way to get a result without three of his first-team players.

The Verdict: Body blow

It certainly is a blow for the Tyneside outfit to be without all three players against the Elland Road faithful, especially the firing power that Wilson possesses.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-updates/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The striker has already managed to score two goals in three matches in total so far this term (Transfermarkt), and could well have made the difference at the top end of the pitch, with Leeds missing three centre-backs through injury or suspension.

Nonetheless, other players in the squad will have to step up now in what looks to be a vital fixture already in the race to avoid being relegated down to the EFL Championship.

Rayudu and Murtaza star in four-wicket win

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were out

The India XI thoroughly outplayed their Pakistan counterparts in their first outing of the ICL 20s World Series, chasing down a target of 166 with five balls to spare. It was a good win for India, who kept Pakistan to a gettable total, bar a few dropped catches, and their chase was aided by a similarly sloppy display from Pakistan. Ambati Rayudu did not finish what he started, but batted long enough to ensure those behind him didn’t sweat too much. Hemang Badani saw India through with an unbeaten 32 from 22 deliveriesIndia lost the explosive G Vignesh in the first over, run out by a direct hit from Shahid Yousuf when he harried down the track and did not pay heed to Ibrahim Khaleel’s call to stay put. An entertaining partnership followed.Khaleel and Rayudu, who was reprieved by Imran Nazir at backward point on 4, struck the ball confidently and with precision. Rana Naved-ul-Hasan was taken for 14 in his opening over, and Khaleel looked good for a few runs more before Arshad Khan drew a mishit on 36, scored from 27 balls. Stuart Binny failed to convert a dropped catch and drove a return catch back to Arshad and Mohammad Sami got R Sathish cheaply as well. Rayudu continued to hit the ball well and crossed fifty from 36 balls with an inside-out slash.Having just thumped a long hop through cover, Rayudu chased a lifting delivery from Abdul Razzaq and was brilliantly taken by the wicketkeeper, Humayun Farhat, with the score reading 132 for 5. At this stage, India needed 34 from 28 balls. Inzamam-ul-Haq brought back Sami and he uprooted S Abbas Ali’s stumps when 13 were still required. Badani kept his cool and in the company of Reetinder Singh Sodhi, finished the match in the final over. The success for India was laid by the start they had with the ball. Four balls into the match, Pakistan had lost Imran Farhat, mistiming a pull off Rajamani Jesuraj to mid-on. Nazir – who slammed 392 runs at 43.55 with a strike rate of 175.78 in the recently concluded tournament – signalled his intent with a four and a six off Jesuraj, but the bowler had the final say when Nazir went the same way as Farhat in the third over. Rana continued his free-hitting fun, smacking Binny and Sodhi’s military medium-pace with disdain, even as Yousuf went pulling Vignesh to midwicket.Inzamam’s arrival at the crease in the ninth over was a potential minefield for India. Rana was looking solid on 44 from 30 balls when Murtaza was called back. It took him one delivery to send Rana back – another massive swing going nowhere but down Badani’s throat at long-on. Murtaza was immediately taken off for three overs – during which Pakistan scored 27 – and returned to trap Inzamam lbw for 24 on the sweep. Razzaq followed in the next over but the luckless Eklak Ahmid looked on in despair as two catches were dropped in one over.Murtaza added Tahir Mughal for 12, Jesuraj dismissed Humayun, and Pakistan ended their innings on 165 for 9. Scores in that region had been chased down frequently this past month, and India found themselves in familiar territory.

Fulham make approach for Michael Obafemi

Fulham have made the first move in their bid to bring Michael Obafemi to Craven Cottage this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Football League World, who claimed that Tony Khan has made an approach to Southampton regarding the availability of the 21-year-old striker ahead of a potential move for the Republic of Ireland under-21 international in what remains of the summer transfer window.

Indeed, talkSPORT’s Alex Crook recently claimed in a post on Twitter that Blackburn Rovers, Bournemouth and Fulham, as well as a host of other Championship clubs, are interested in the striker, with whom Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side are believed to be willing to part ways this summer.

However, following Football League World’s latest update, it would seem as if the Cottagers could be leading the race for Obafemi.

Fans will be buzzing

With Khan having already landed two impressive signings in the shape of Harry Wilson and Paulo Gazzaniga in the summer transfer window, reports that Fulham’s director of football appears intent on continuing the Cottagers’ business in the transfer market – particularly for a player as exciting as Obafemi – are sure to have the Craven Cottage faithful buzzing.

Indeed, despite starting just eight of his 21 Premier League appearances back in 2019/20, the £2.7m-rated centre-forward still bagged three goals, provided two assists and created two big chances for his teammates, as well as taking 0.6 shots and making 0.5 key passes per game.

As such, taking into account that the £12k-per-week Obafemi is still just 21 years of age, the man who Hasenhuttl dubbed a “quality” player would very much seem to be an incredibly exciting prospect.

If Khan can follow up on his initial contact with an acceptable offer for the striker, the prospective signing of the Southampton starlet certainly appears to have the potential to go down as something of a transfer masterclass by the Cottagers co-owner.

Ex-Everton ace urges club to snap up £17m-rated midfielder

Former Everton star Michael Ball believes that Denis Zakaria would be a good signing for the club, provided they can secure him for a reasonable fee.

The Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder has been linked with a number of English clubs, including Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

Zakaria has been with the Bundesliga club since 2017 and has made a total of 128 appearances for them.

Reports have suggested that he was valued at over €40m (£34m) last summer but that price has appeared to drop, with the club cutting his asking price in half to £17m.

Ball believes that the fee is vital when it comes to any deal, and thinks that the club should only rubber-stamp the transfer if the asking price is as low as is being reported.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, the former Everton star said: “I think he was valued at around €40 million maybe 12 months or so ago. I think those fees are unrealistic for Everton but if they can get him for half the price, it could be a good one for the club.”

Zakaria is also a Switzerland international and played for his country at Euro 2020; in total, he has won 34 caps.

Seniors striving to live up to own benchmarks – Dhoni

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has said that Indian’s experienced middle-order batsmen are burdened more by their own high expectations than that of the fans and the media

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has said that Indian’s senior batsmen – Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman – are under pressure more due to their own high expectations than that of the fans and the media. With age catching up (Laxman, who turns 34 next month, is the youngest of the middle-order veterans) and all four of them in poor form during the recent Test series in Sri Lanka, their places have come under scrutiny.Dhoni, however, insisted that the seniors still have a lot to offer. “There is more pressure on them because of their own expectation level and because they have set the benchmark so high,” he told . “There is more pressure that comes from within.”I don’t think you can really write them off, they have plenty in them. But at the same time you have to look into the future. It’s all about transition, making a respectful last few years in their international career.”He also said that the seniors could still hold their own despite the presence of talented youngsters who are pushing for Test spots. “We definitely have players who are talented and can make it big, but at the same time, it’s not really about talent. Their adaptability and preparation matters.”He also said that Australia will find the going tough in the Tests if the pitches assist the spinners. “If it is a normal Indian wicket that starts to turn may be from the tea session [of the first day], then it will be tough for them. They will have to apply themselves to get the runs.” Spinners accounted for ten of the 12 Australian wickets that fell during their four-day game against a Board President’s XI in Hyderabad last week.

ASM was desperate for Willock move

Newcastle United correspondent Chris Waugh has revealed that Allan Saint-Maximin was ‘desperate’ for Joe Willock to return to Newcastle.

The lowdown

Willock has now sealed his permanent switch from Arsenal and will be available for the trip to Aston Villa next weekend (via nufc.co.uk).

The 21-year-old has inked a six-year contract and joins for a fee in excess of £20million (via BBC Sport).

During his loan spell last season, he was instrumental in the Magpies’ late surge up the table. He scored in their final seven matches as they climbed from the brink of the relegation zone to 12th place.

The latest

Waugh reports that a number of Newcastle players had kept in contact with Willock, and that Saint Maximin was ‘especially’ keen for him to extend his stay at St James’ Park.

The Frenchman’s public plea – he said Willock ‘can be really great for the team and me’ – was interpreted as ‘a clear indication’ that he’d be more inclined to stay if he was playing alongside the former Arsenal man. Intriguingly, Waugh says he wasn’t alone in that sentiment.

The dressing room has been left ‘relieved and enthused’ by the news, though there is still a feeling that further signings are needed.

The verdict

Willock and Saint-Maximin may have an excellent relationship, but it’s probably less about personnel than it is ambition. A player of the Frenchman’s quality needs to feel like he’s battling for more than just pure survival.

Turning the loan into a permanent signing will be regarded as the bare minimum for Newcastle in this year’s market, but it should help them steer clear of any relegation bother.

Get a couple more quality additions through the door in the remaining weeks of the window, albeit on loan, and an assault on the top half may not be out of the question.

For now though, the news that Saint-Maximin may be more inclined to stay thanks to Willock’s arrival is surely the cherry on top of the excitement around the signing.

In other news, could this be Newcastle’s next signing?

Ponting out of Bangladesh series

Ricky Ponting’s recovery from wrist surgery will prevent him from appearing in the one-day series against Bangladesh

Ricky Ponting’s recovery from wrist surgery will prevent him from appearing in the one-day series against Bangladesh at the end of the month while Matthew Hayden must prove he is ready after a long-standing heel problem. Ponting’s absence makes him an unlikely starter for the Champions Trophy – if Australia go to Pakistan – while Hayden will be monitored over the next two weeks. Both players left the tour of West Indies early, with Ponting heading home during the one-day series, and Hayden departing without playing a Test. “I’m feeling pretty good but if you’d asked me this time last week I would have said I was no chance,” Hayden told the . “I saw my local physio [on Friday] and he said it was a completely different tendon to the one he treated last week. He was really worried.”It’s a race against the clock. Given its rapid improvement from last week I’m certainly a chance but I can’t give a definite answer whether I’m in or out. I’ve got to be careful I don’t take any risks over the next month or so given what we have ahead of us. I’ll certainly be conservative with it.”Michael Clarke, who was in Melbourne for a meeting with ICC officials over the Pakistan situation, will take charge of the 14-man squad. Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, said the three games against Bangladesh in Darwin would be ideal preparation for a busy time over the next 18 months. “While it is disappointing not to have Ricky Ponting available,” Hilditch said, “we are confident that continuing his recovery and missing this series will assure Ricky is ready for the demanding cricket schedule ahead.”Australia’s previous engagement was the 5-0 win over West Indies and players such as Shaun Marsh, Cameron White and David Hussey have held their spots. “This series provides us with an exciting opportunity to see our senior players and youth combine in what will be a very important series for us,” the coach Tim Nielsen said. “We are very hopeful of Matthew Hayden being able to rejoin the team and our medical staff will continue to monitor him over the next two weeks.”The Australians go into camp next week in Queensland before the first match of the series on August 30. Originally Bangladesh were supposed to appear in two Tests, but they were postponed to 2010 when it was realised they clashed with the Olympics. Both teams will use the contests to fine-tune for the Champions Trophy, which is currently due to start in Pakistan on September 12.Australia Matthew Hayden, Shane Watson, Michael Clarke (capt), Michael Hussey, Andrew Symonds, Brad Haddin (wk), Shaun Marsh, David Hussey, James Hopes, Cameron White, Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson, Stuart Clark, Nathan Bracken.

Stage set for Hong Kong to prove themselves

While he knows all too well how tough it will be for his inexperienced side to beat India and Pakistan, Hong Kong captain Tabarak Dar sees the Asia Cup as an excellent opportunity to learn and develop

While he knows all too well how tough it will be for his inexperienced side to beat India and Pakistan, Hong Kong captain Tabarak Dar sees the Asia Cup as an excellent opportunity to learn and develop. The tournament starts in Karachi on June 24, and Dar believes it will encourage Hong Kong and other smaller sides to lift their game in the future. “I believe this [Asia Cup] is a very good chance to play with big guns Pakistan and India, the two world-class outfits,” he told the , a Pakistan daily. “And if we are able to compete with them it would only benefit Hong Kong cricket.”Even though our task is very tough, we are pretty optimistic of putting up a good show here because the stage is set for our lads to prove everyone where we stand in international cricket.”Hong Kong lost both their matches in the previous Asia Cup in 2004. They play hosts Pakistan on Tuesday and India the next day.”At the end of the day, we are not here on holidays,” said Dar, 32. “Our aim is to be competitive in this tournament and try to create an upset or two. Playing alongside the best teams will be a good learning process for my team.”While Dar could not single out any one player to watch out for, he had confidence in his team. “There are individuals in this squad who are capable of big things,” he said. “Basically, ours is a side that contains all-round players. However, we are pinning our bowling hopes on Nadeem Ahmed, who was a youngster when we played in Sri Lanka in 2004.””Straight after the Asia Cup we have the ACC Trophy, so we are looking at it as an opportunity to play against bigger Test nations and show the world where we stand here and then in the ACC Trophy,” said Dar.Aftab Habib, Hong Kong’s coach, admitted they were up against the odds. “We are a very small team but this Asia Cup gives us an opportunity to know where we stand against bigger teams and it is a huge stepping stone for us,” Habib, a former England Test player who took over as coach 10 months ago, told . “I am honoured to be associated with Hong Kong cricket and by now have got to know the boys well and the goal for me is to take them further.”
