Everton extend Begovic deal

Patrick Boyland has now revealed some interesting Everton news on Asmir Begovic.

The Lowdown: Barely played

In truth, Begovic has barely played since arriving on a free transfer in the summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-5/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The former AFC Bournemouth goalkeeper has played just six times in total so far this season, and has not featured since March (Transfermarkt).

The Latest: Contract extension

Taking to Twitter, The Athletic journalist Boyland has revealed that the Goodison Park faithful have now taken up the option of extending Begovic’s deal for another year:

“Understand Everton have also taken up the option of extending Asmir Begovic’s deal by a further year.”

The Verdict: Interesting

It is certainly an interesting decision by the Merseyside club to keep hold of Begovic for another year, despite the fact that he has barely featured for them.

At 34 years of age, and earning £43,000-per-week at the Toffees, one could question why they have decided to keep hold of him, especially given the fact that they have Andy Lonergan as another back-up goalkeeper to Jordan Pickford, and Joao Virginia still has to come back from his loan spell at Sporting CP.

However, he has done pretty well when he has come in, with the Blues winning four of the six games that he has featured and keeping two clean sheets (Transfermarkt), and so Frank Lampard and the board have clearly seen enough to keep him for another campaign.

McGrath not interested in official bowling coach role

Australia are looking for a new bowling coach with Troy Cooley leaving to head their Centre of Excellence, but Glenn McGrath won’t be applying

Australia are looking for a new bowling coach with Troy Cooley leaving to head their Centre of Excellence, but Glenn McGrath won’t be applying. While his former team-mate Justin Langer quickly traded life in the middle for a role as the team’s batting coach, McGrath is comfortable as an occasional adviser to the attack.McGrath, who took 563 wickets in 124 Tests, will be omnipresent at the SCG over the next week and will seek out the fast men to pass on some tips. “I’m always happy to give advice where I can,” he said at the SCG. “I’ll chat to the boys a fair bit during this Test match and see what I can do.” But he is not interested in an official role.Four years ago McGrath retired after the 5-0 Ashes whitewash, but the scenery has changed dramatically since then. “To play the Ashes here and lose is pretty disappointing but you know what? It amazes me how, when Australia was so dominant, everyone was saying it was bad for world cricket. All of a sudden, the boys have lost a few games and everyone is calling for their heads.”He maintains faith in the leadership of Ricky Ponting and is confident the team will again climb towards the Test peak. “I’ve got total faith the boys will bounce back and get back to the top of the tree,” he said. The main purpose of McGrath’s week is to raise money for the McGrath Foundation, which supports breast cancer sufferers, and the organisation’s major event of the year is the “Pink Test”. England want to finish the series with a 3-1 result while Australia are desperately hoping to fight back to secure a draw.McGrath was the master of the 5-0 pre-series prediction but he has had to revise his tip. “It’ll be 2-all,” he said, unprompted.

'We'll play aggressive cricket' – Elton Chigumbura

Zimbabwe captain Elton Chigumbura has promised aggression from his team on the tour of South Africa which gets underway on October 8. The teams play two Twenty20 internationals and three ODIs.”We are looking forward to this tour, as the underdogs we have nothing to lose and we will be playing more aggressive cricket in comparison to our previous tours,” Chigumbura said upon his team’s arrival in South Africa. “The coach and I have chosen to go in a more aggressive route with the team; we will no longer be playing just for the sake of playing a match, but we will be playing to win.”The best way to build team confidence and to move Zimbabwe cricket forward is to win and that is our objective for this tour. We are concentrating on us and not so much on the opposition this time.”Zimbabwe recently beat Ireland 2-1 in an ODI series and have recalled Grant Flower, who’ll bolster the batting line-up. However, Flower’s arrival has been held up due to invalid travel documents, a problem his team manager Lovemore Banda hoped would be resolved in a day’s time. The teams have never played each other in a Twenty20 game and Zimbabwe coach Alan Butcher was looking forward to the challenge. “Pro20 cricket is about who is the better team on the day, the uncertainty of this format is what makes it so exciting. When a team plays Pro20 cricket, the outcome can never be set in stone as the margin for an upset becomes wider,” Butcher said. “The key is to focus for all twenty overs.”

Rangers must finally axe Cedric Itten

Rangers have had a number of success stories in recent years in the transfer window as they have brought some terrific talent to Ibrox.

The likes of Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent, Joe Aribo and Glen Kamara are all first-team stars who were signed from elsewhere to improve the squad and played pivotal roles in securing the Premiership title last season.

Unfortunately, some players simply do not make the grade in Glasgow. Not every transfer is a success and some fall by the wayside instead of becoming a star like Kent.

Not good enough

One player who falls into the unfortunate category is striker Cedric Itten. Based on the evidence of his Gers career so far, the £10k-a-week earning ace is not good enough for Rangers and Van Bronckhorst must finally wield his axe in the summer – allowing him to leave on a permanent basis.

The Dutch head coach recalled him from his loan spell with Greuther Furth in January and claimed that he offered something “different” at the top end of the pitch. However, the biggest difference between him and Morelos is their respective quality in the final third.

In the Premiership this season, Itten has zero goals and zero assists in four appearances, whilst he has also lost a whopping 73% of his individual duels. This suggests that he is a lightweight off the ball who also offers no cutting edge. His Colombian teammate, meanwhile, has 11 goals and five assists in 20 starts as he has hit a rich vein of form this term.

Itten was given the nod to start against Livingston and Ross County but failed to contribute directly to a goal in either match. Van Bronckhorst handed him a huge opportunity to show that he is a viable option for the Gers in the Premiership as an alternative to Morelos but the drop-off in quality, as shown by the statistics, is far too steep.

This came after his previous spell in the side under Steven Gerrard where he scored four goals in 30 Premiership outings. He is simply not at the level Rangers require their first-team strikers to be and he must be sold at the end of the campaign. The club must cash in on him ahead of next season and look to bring in a replacement who could put more pressure on El Bufalo throughout the campaign or at least do a respectable job when filling in for him at times.

Celtic: FC Ufa keen on Bolingoli-Mbombo

An update has emerged regarding transfer interest in Celtic defender Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo…

What’s the talk?

According to Football Insider, Russian outfit FC Ufa are in talks with the Hoops over a potential deal to sign the full-back on loan until the end of the season.

The report claims that discussions are underway for the move to take place, as he does not feature in Ange Postecoglou’s short-term plans.

Axe him

Instead of sending out Bolingoli-Mbombo on a temporary basis, the Australian boss must brutally axe him from the club entirely by pushing for a sale. If possible, Celtic must look to cash in on him now and move him on from Parkhead rather than only having a solution until June.

The full-back is simply not good enough for the Hoops, as he is a liability on and off the pitch. He has only played 31 times since joining in 2019, which shows that he does not have the quality – in either Neil Lennon’s or Postecoglou’s eyes – to be a regular fixture in the team, indicating that he is not up to the standard required.

Off the pitch, he has also shown that he can be a liability. After causing two games to be postponed in 2020 due to a secret trip to Spain amidst pandemic-related travel restrictions, Bolingoli-Mbombo was blasted by his then-manager Lennon, who said:

“I am livid; total betrayal of trust. He took a flight to Spain on the Monday and flew back on Tuesday – one day in Spain, no logic to that – and decided to keep it to himself.

“We couldn’t have done any more as a club to maintain the standards. This is a rogue who has gone off tangent and decided to do something very, very selfish.

“We were livid and appalled. We have been bitterly, sorely let down by the selfish actions of one individual. He blatantly disregarded instructions.”

This suggests that the 26-year-old is not someone who can be relied upon by the manager, as Lennon stated that the club were felt let down by his actions. However, it is worth pointing out that he may have learned from his mistakes and improved as a person.

His performances on the pitch have not improved, though, as Postecoglou has only deemed him worthy of two appearances in the Premiership this season. This is why the Hoops boss must push for Bolingoli-Mbombo to be sold on a permanent basis to the Russian club instead of being loaned out, because his time at Celtic so far does not suggest that he will come good any time soon.

Dilshan targets 1000 calendar runs

Tillakaratne Dilshan has said the tri-series in Zimbabwe, in which he led Sri Lanka to victory as stand-in captain, helped him recover his lost form and carry it into the Asia Cup

Tillakaratne Dilshan has said the tri-series in Zimbabwe, in which he led Sri Lanka to victory as stand-in captain, helped him recover his lost form and carry it into the Asia Cup, where he sunk Bangladesh with an aggressive half-century followed by a canny spell in Dambulla.Dilshan made 71 off 51 balls, helping Sri Lanka achieve the first-ever 300-plus total in Dambulla, and set his sights on scoring 1000 runs before 2010 ends. He presently has 603. “Before the Zimbabwe tour I was out of form. I started training and watched video clips of my batting and the little things that had gone wrong with my batting, and I made the necessary adjustments,” he said after Sri Lanka’s 126-run win. “I got the start in the first match in Zimbabwe and I have carried the form to the Asia Cup.”I want to continue with this form for the next couple of months. I am close to 1000 runs in ODI cricket for the year. There are about five matches or so before the end of 2010 and I am hoping to make 1000 runs. I am enjoying my batting at the moment and trying to take some chances in the first 10 overs. If I survive I want to go for a big score. Today I had the opportunity to make a big score but unfortunately I got out in the 15th over.”Dilshan and his opening partner Upul Tharanga, who scored 54, put on 111 for the first wicket to set up Sri Lanka’s record total. “We have an understanding that whoever is hitting the ball well should get most of the strike. I enjoy batting with Upul.”According to Dilshan, the wickets in Dambulla were getting better and batsmen can enjoy batting in future matches. “It is a good wicket for both batsmen and bowlers. Bowlers who can hit the deck have a chance to get wickets and in batting, if the batsman plays strokes, he can put the bowlers under pressure. It’s an all-round wicket especially suited for batsmen.”Dilshan wasn’t done after his innings, returning to halt Bangladesh’s momentum with three quick strikes. He finished with 3 for 37 as Bangladesh were shot out for 186. “I am not surprised that I got three wickets. I knew when you play one spinner I will have to bowl a few overs,” he said. “In the last one and a half years I was keen to bowl but I hardly got a chance because of the presence of Ajantha Mendis and Muttiah Muralitharan.”Today there was only one spinner and I had to bowl and grabbed that opportunity and showed that I can still bowl. I think I can serve the team as an allrounder bowling offbreaks.”

Kieswetter impresses in Somerset win

Scorecard
Craig Kieswetter returned to the Somerset team with a half-century as the Group A leaders maintained their successful Clydesdale Bank record with a 71-run win over Worcestershire at Bath. A festival crowd of around 3,000, basking in hot sunshine, saw the England World Twenty20 hero hit 52, with three sixes and three fours, in a Somerset total of 235 for 9. Zander de Bruyn made 55, and Ben Phillips 51 not out, his first one-day half-century.That proved too much for the Royals on an unpredictable pitch, as they subsided from 63 for 1 to 164 all out, Mark Turner taking a career best 4 for 36 from 7.4 overs. Somerset have now won all five of their group matches, and already look hot favourites to reach the semi-finals.Kieswetter received a warm ovation from spectators when opening the Somerset innings after they had lost the toss, and soon helped them make up for the early losses of Marcus Trescothick and Nick Compton. He shared a third-wicket stand of 86 with de Bruyn, and was soon demonstrating the clean hitting that had earned him the Man of the Match award in the World Twenty20 final seven days earlier.Having faced 63 balls, Kieswetter got a leading edge to Imran Arif and was caught at cover. When the in-form James Hildreth followed for a duck and De Bruyn was caughtbehind having hit five fours and two sixes, Somerset were 125 for 5.Worcestershire continued to claim wickets, but the match was taken away from them by 34-year-old Phillips, who hammered seven fours and a six in 34 balls. Daryl Mitchell was the pick of the Royals’ attack, with 2 for 30 from his eight overs. When Vikram Solanki fell to the first ball of the Royals’ reply, a sharp lifter from Turner, their struggles in the competition looked set to continue. Phil Jaques and Moeen Ali briefly raised hopes with a stand of 63, but once Jaques was well caught by Murali Kartik attempting to pull Turner, there was a steady procession of batsmen.Peter Trego produced a delightful slower ball to york Alexei Kervezee for 19, and soon it was 141 for 8. Kieswetter’s glovework was nowhere near as impressive as his batting, and the 22-year-old still has work to do on his keeping if he wants to challenge Matt Prior for his Test place.
