Wolves: Wanderers handed setback after Neves’ dream is revealed

A new transfer update has emerged surrounding the future of Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves, according to a Spanish source.

The Lowdown: Plenty of interest

The 25-year-old first joined the Premier League outfit from FC Porto in 2017, and has since gone on to make a total of 208 appearances for Bruno Lage’s side.

Neves’ contract with the Wanderers isn’t set to expire until 2024, but he has been linked with a move away from Molineux for most of this season, with the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, and Barcelona said to be the three main suitors interested in his services.

Making the switch to either the Gunners or the Red Devils would obviously mean staying in the top-flight, but the thought of a move to the Spanish giants is huge for any player, and following a new report, it seems as though we might just know where the 26-time international’s next destination is going to be.

The Latest: Neves’ dream

According to major Spanish outlet Sport (via TEAMtalk), it’s claimed that Neves would ‘rather opt’ for a move to the Blaugrana, with it being his lifelong ‘dream’ to wear the Barcelona shirt.

It was thought that a move to the Catalans would be the least likely option due to their current financial situation, but given the fact that the maestro is ‘keen’ on a transfer, it’s reported that Barca may want to do ‘all in their power’ to secure his signature in the summer.

The Verdict: Bags of potential

Making 32 outings in all competitions under Lage so far this season, the £36m-rated talisman has managed to score four goals and register two assists in what has been a difficult campaign for the Wanderers, as per Transfermarkt.

Neves has been dubbed an “outstanding” player by Wolves journalist Tim Spiers, and still has plenty to give wherever his next club might be, should he depart.

If the midfielder were to join Xavi’s outfit in the upcoming window, it would at least save the Molineux faithful from having to see him in a rival shirt twice a season, and presumably bank the club a huge fee to reinvest into the squad.

Leeds: Noel Whelan reacts to U23 ticket news

Leeds United employee Noel Whelan has hailed the club’s supporters ahead of a potential record attendance for an Under-23 fixture on Friday evening.

The Lowdown: Elland Road ticket details

The Whites youngsters, now led by Andrew Taylor following Mark Jackson’s promotion to the first team, take on Manchester City tomorrow evening.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-42/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Leeds gave season ticket holders and members the opportunity to attend for free up until April 12, with Beren Cross sharing on Wednesday evening that ticket sales are beyond 17,000.

The record for a Premier League 2 fixture stands at 17,525 – set by Everton in 2017, but it looks as if the Whites will surpass that figure before the weekend.

The Latest: Whelan’s comments

Talking to Football Insider, Whelan labelled the support as ‘incredible’, adding that this goes to show that an expansion to Elland Road needs to happen.

“That just says it all about our club.

“We knew we had incredible supporters, and this is just the latest evidence of that.

“It’s not the first time we’ve gone over the 10,000 mark – and that’s fantastic support.

“This sort of thing just epitomises why we need a bigger stadium. A lot of these fans can’t get tickets for the Premier League games.

“For me, this sort of demand just proves that an expansion to Elland Road needs to be in the works.

“It’s going to be a great experience for these young players to play in front of that kind of crowd.”

The Verdict: Bonkers

The well-known phrase ‘Leeds take more’ is sometimes mocked by opposition supporters, but this just goes to show how incredible the Whites faithful are.

Bringing nearly 20,000 to a U23 fixture is crazy, and potentially higher than a number of Championship attendances this weekend.

The club have teased work to Elland Road in recent years, and after this update, hopefully, they will make a start on plans to expand the current 37,890 capacity.

Everton struck gold on Anthony Gordon

Everton have undeniably spent significant amounts of money on bringing new players to the Merseyside club over the past few years.

Despite their hefty spending, the Toffees have had a difficult season in the Premier League this time around.

With 30 games played, Frank Lampard’s side have lost 18 of them, putting them in 17th place and just four points above the relegation zone.

One shining light for the Toffees throughout this campaign has been Anthony Gordon, who the club have undoubtedly hit the jackpot on.

As a product of Everton’s youth academy, the winger made his senior debut back in December 2017 in a Europa League clash against Apollon Limassol under former Toffees manager Sam Allardyce.

With 52 senior appearances to his name, 32 of them have come during this season across all competitions.

In those 32 appearances, the Englishman, who has been labelled as a “fearless” player by Alan Shearer, has found the back of the net four times and provided three assists in the process.

In terms of his overall performances in the Premier League, WhoScored currently list him as Everton’s joint-fourth highest rated outfield player currently in Lampard’s squad with a rating of 6.72.

Back in April 2020, Transfermarkt rated the youngster’s market value at £1.17m, whereas it now stands at £14.4m, highlighting a massive increase based on what he’s delivered on the pitch for his club over the past weeks and months.

Labelled as a player that “has got everything,” by Ben Godfrey, Gordon certainly made a difference for his side last time out by scoring the winning goal in their 1-0 win over Manchester United, which could end up being a crucial result in terms of their chances of avoiding the drop.

To highlight how impressive the 21-year-old has been for Everton in an attacking sense, only Andros Townsend (45%) has a better percentage for shots on target than the Liverpudlian (44.4%) out of players to have more than three attempts at goal.

Also, no other Toffees player has made more dead-ball passes that have led to a shot at goal than Gordon (10), highlighting just how much of an attacking nuisance he can be for the opposition.

Taking all of this into account, the Merseyside club have certainly proved with the emergence of Gordon that they don’t always need to go out into the transfer market and spend significant sums of money on new players.

Everton fans react to Niko Kovac rumour

Niko Kovac has emerged as a potential candidate for the vacant manager’s role at Everton.

The Telegraph’s Jason Burt says that the 50-year-old’s name is ‘being pushed’ as the Toffees assess their options, and the Croatian is apparently keen to have a crack at the Premier League.

Everton sacked Rafael Benitez in the wake of Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Norwich City. It is their second managerial search in the space of eight months after Carlo Ancelotti left in June.

An overview of Kovac

Kovac has managed three clubs – Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern Munich and AS Monaco. The Croatian succeeded Jupp Heynckes at Bayern after taking Eintracht from relegation territory to the top half.

However, he was sacked by the Bavarian giants in November 2019, 16 months after taking charge, following a 5-1 defeat at the hands of his former club. He had managed to win a league-and-cup double in his first season at the helm in Munich (via BBC Sport).

Kovac’s next stop, in the summer of 2020, was Monaco, but he was dismissed earlier this month with the team sixth in Ligue 1.

Fan feed The Toffee Blues relayed Burt’s claim, and here’s what these Everton supporters made of it, with many in favour of seeing Kovac getting the Goodison Park gig.

Seamers peg back Warwickshire

ScorecardKent seamers Simon Cook and Matt Coles claimed four wickets apiece as Warwickshire were dismissed for only 250 in their County Championship Division One clash on a bright, yet breezy opening day in Canterbury. The chill wind that forced umpires Barry Dudleston and Neil Mallender to don black gloves all day, also helped Coles and Cook to swing the ball late and cause Warwickshire’s batsmen headaches throughout a first innings that lasted barely five and a half hours.By the close Kent had reached 43 for the loss of their captain Rob Key and will go into the second day facing a deficit of 207 with nine wickets intact. After luckless opening stints by Amjad Khan and South African Test legend Makhaya Ntini, on his home debut, Khan switched to the Pavilion End to hurry left-handed Ian Westwood into a cramped pull that spooned up to be caught at mid-wicket and make it 51 for one.Just when Kent’s decision to field first was coming into question, so former Middlesex right-armer Cook made further in-roads on his way to figures of 4 for 66. He had England’s Ian Bell well held at long leg off a top-edged hook for 10, then, to the last ball before lunch, he enticed Darren Maddy (39) to follow an away-swinger and edge to keeper Geraint Jones.Four more wickets fell in the mid-session, three of them leg before. Khan trapped Jim Troughton (one) three overs after the interval then Coles came on at 2.15pm and as fifth change to post career-best figures of 4 for 55 from his 14 overs.A muscular, right-armer from Maidstone, 19-year-old Coles is affiliated to his home town Kent League club, The Mote, and this was easily his most impressive stint to date for the county first team. He bowled an impressive line and nagging length and nipped the ball around off the seam to trap Rikki Clarke (eight) with an off-cutter and then catch Tim Ambrose (14) on the crease and also flush in front.Cook returned to the party just before tea to have Chris Woakes (11) caught behind and Coles took his tally to four soon after the resumption by feathering Jonathan Trott’s off stump with one that nipped back through the gate of an expansive drive and then having Naqaash Tahir (eight) caught low down at third slip.Trott, with 67 in a shade over two hours, was comfortably Warwickshire’s top-scorer. Neil Carter’s belligerent 43 included the only six of the day off Cook and helped the visitors to their second batting bonus point, but the bowler soon had his revenge by having the left-hander caught behind. In the 13 remaining overs Kent lost Key for 18, caught behind by Ambrose off Woakes though the former England man appeared disappointed by the decision as he trooped off with his side’s score on 36.

Bangalore bank on batsmen and India contingent

Royal Challengers Bangalore

In the second season, they muddled through the first half of the competition before a late surge under Anil Kumble’s captaincy lifted them to the finals.Going into this IPL season, Bangalore have two clear advantages over their start to the campaign in South Africa: first, in Kumble they have a fixed leader for the entire tournament, unlike the uncertainty surrounding who would take over once Kevin Pietersen left after a handful of matches in 2009.Second, and perhaps more significantly, their Indian contingent looks much more formidable this season – the Karnataka trio of Manish Pandey, Abhimanyu Mithun and R Vinay Kumar have all had excellent domestic seasons while Sreevats Goswami, the Bengal wicketkeeper-batsman, topped the run-charts in the recent Vijay Hazare tournament with 568 runs in seven innings. With Kumble, Rahul Dravid, Praveen Kumar, Virat Kolhi and Robin Uthappa likely to play most games, Bangalore won’t be forced to field any makeweight Indian players in the XI unlike in previous seasons.Coach Ray Jennings said the key to success in the tournament was to have a committed and motivated group of players. “To be the finalists in South Africa is an achievement but that’s forgotten, we need to set new goals,” he said. “It’s a type of game in which the best side doesn’t always win, so you have to make sure that you are aggressive, and be very passionate when you play.”

New faces

Bangalore may not have splashed money on big names, but they have made two shrewd overseas buys. One is Ireland-born batsman Eoin Morgan who, with his inventive, made-for-Twenty20 strokeplay, looks a steal at US$220,000 after an assured first year as England’s limited-overs finisher. The other is allrounder Steven Smith, who has made his name in Twenty20s with three solid seasons for New South Wales in the Big Bash and was key to their 2009 Champions League victory. Bangalore are a bit light on allrounders, which is where this legspinner and hard-hitting batsman comes in. His athletic fielding will also prove handy.

Watch out for

Vijay Mallya paid big money two years ago for Cameron White, when the batsman was still a relative unknown. White has had an indifferent couple of seasons with Bangalore, but is entering this tournament on the back of one of his most fruitful periods with Australia. In the absence of Kevin Pietersen and Ross Taylor in the initial stages, White could be the man to keep the boundary-count soaring for Bangalore.

Missing in action

Jesse Ryder is out of the entire tournament with an injury. Bangalore will miss not only his hard-hitting batting but also his disciplined medium-pace bowling and athletic fielding. Pietersen will join the squad only in late March and Taylor will be occupied with the series against Australia till the end of the month.

Strength

The batting. Even in their forgettable Champions League campaign, Bangalore’s batsmen delivered in three of the four matches.

Weakness

The bowling. Dale Steyn isn’t as feared in Twenty20 as he is in Tests, Anil Kumble hasn’t played regular cricket for a long time, and the other bowling options aren’t names that batsmen will lose sleep over. On benign Indian tracks, the opposition should fancy running up big scores.

X-Factor

A virtually unknown Manish Pandey became famous after slamming a century against Deccan Chargers last year. He has followed that up with a superb Ranji Trophy season, topping the run-charts with 882 runs.

IPL 2009 – The key figures

Final position: Runners-up
Top scorer: Jacques Kallis with 361 runs at 27.76

Worst result: 92-run loss to Chennai Super Kings in their second match
Highest team score: 176 for 4 v Kolkata

Prediction for 2010

Expect them to make the semi-finals.
