Move over Osula: Newcastle's £35m "monster" is quickly becoming undroppable

Newcastle United might have faced inferior opponents, but their comfortable passage through to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup underlined the strength of Eddie Howe’s side.

It felt at times during the summer transfer window that the Magpies would teeter and fall, so intense was the noise around Alexander Isak’s future at St. James’ Park, so glum was the mood.

But in Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa, Newcastle have welcomed talented and contrasting strikers equipped to deal with the pressures of leading the line on Tyneside and into the Champions League, United having lost their opener against Barcelona and now in need of results.

However, they also have William Osula, who has gone from strength to strength under Howe’s wing and bagged himself a brace against Bradford City on Wednesday evening.

William Osula's Carabao Cup display

Osula came within a whisker of leaving Newcastle this summer, with Eintracht Frankfurt over in Germany actually tabling a formal £30m offer for the Danish forward.

Sources such as Sky Sports’ Keith Downie have confirmed that the bid had been slapped on the table and then withdrawn on deadline day. Some within the Toon hierarchy may be kicking themselves for not having accepted the offer sooner, but Howe may well be content with the 22-year-old Dane having stayed put, with three goals scored already in 2025/26.

It wasn’t a perfect display against Bradford in the Carabao Cup, but Osula certainly demonstrated a degree of improvement after languishing on the periphery last year, also netting off the bench in the Premier League during the 3-2 defeat by Liverpool in August.

Praised for his complete performance and for “slowly but surely” making the necessary improvements to his game, Osula is a valuable asset as United look to challenge across multiple fronts this term.

However, he wasn’t the only one to catch the eye on Wednesday, with Malick Thiaw putting in another statement showing after his summer transfer. The centre-back has some thick internal competition, but there might come a point when Howe marks him as one of the first names on the team sheet.

Malick Thiaw's start to life at Newcastle

Newcastle welcome Arsenal to St. James’ Park in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, and that’s going to be a tough test indeed for Howe’s side.

It was a bold call to field so many of his finest players, though that is a declaration of the manager’s respect for the Carabao Cup and his desire to successfully defend the crown that was so emphatically claimed last season.

Thiaw helped carry Newcastle through, and he may well have underscored his claim for another starting berth at the weekend, with fans taking to online circles after the win and voicing their excitement at a future Thiaw and Sven Botman partnership.

As per FBref, the German defender, who joined from AC Milan for £35m in August, ranks among the top 7% of defenders across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for pass completion and the top 16% for progressive passes per 90.

He is not only crisp in possession, but eager to make things happen and progress the play upfield.

And, against Bradford, the 24-year-old proved himself worthy of a place in Howe’s starting line-up for the biggest occasions, energetic and secure in the defensive phases and crisp and creative on the ball.

There’s a certain no-nonsense style to the right-footed defender, who also carries a technical command that stretches above the capacity of most other positional peers competing in the Premier League and across Europe.

Thiaw, while still integrating into Howe’s squad and indeed the Premier League,

He’s been hailed as a “monster in the air” by journalist Martino Puccio for his efforts in Italy with AC Milan, but also “one of the most talented centre-backs in Germany” by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

While Fabian Schar and Dan Burn have been pillars of strength for Newcastle over the past several Howe-led years, it’s clear that in Botman and Thiaw, the tactician has a more dynamic and stable central partnership, and that’s something which could bear dividends in the long run as Newcastle look to build on their recent successes and reach even loftier heights in the coming years.

It would be premature to label Thiaw as undroppable already, but he’s certainly on his way to nailing down a starting spot on the big occasion, and it’s unlikely that many of a Toon persuasion would be dismayed if he were to be named in the rearguard when Arsenal come calling at the weekend.

Reared in Germany and then developed in Serie A, Thiaw has only started once in the top flight thus far, playing most of the recent goalless draw against Bournemouth and receiving a 7/10 match rating from the Chronicle Live after winning four duels, making six clearances and four interceptions, data sourced via Sofascore.

It might have been an even more generous rating, but for a yellow card which prompted Howe to make a change in the dying embers.

In any case, Thiaw is the real deal, and fans can start to get excited about his potential in the Premier League.

Osula did himself no harm in his quest for success at Newcastle, scoring twice against Bradford, but Thiaw’s display was more telling: this is a player tailor-made for a star role in Howe’s team.

'It was a bad game' – Xabi Alonso reacts after Real Madrid suffer heavy derby defeat to Atletico

Xabi Alonso reacted after Real Madrid got hammered by rivals Atletico Madrid in the Madrid derby on Saturday. Los Blancos suffered their first loss of the 2025-26 campaign as Diego Simeone's side registered a convincing 5-2 derby win at the Metropolitano Stadium courtesy of a brace from star striker Julian Alvarez. Veteran star Antoine Griezmann was also on target for Atletico.

  • Alvarez stars in Atletico's derby triumph

Atletico took the lead through Robin Le Normand's 14th-minute goal before Kylian Mbappe restored parity. Arda Guler then put Madrid in front in the 36th minute, but they failed to hold on to the lead until the break as Alexander Serloth scored the equaliser at the stroke of half-time. Alvarez then joined the party as he scored two goals in quick succession at the start of the second half. Griezmann then took the goals tally to five with a strike in the 93rd minute.

Alonso reacts to first loss of the season

Speaking to reporters after the game, Alonso said: "It was a bad game, we didn't play well either collectively or under pressure, we weren't at the level we should have been. We're in a building phase, today is our first defeat and we have to draw conclusions from what happened but there are no excuses, we're hurt, it's a derby and a deserved defeat. We weren't on our game, we were lacking a gear and the defeat hurts."

  • Carvajal suffers injury

Real Madrid dealt a fresh injury blow as Dani Carvajal suffered an injury and had to be subbed in the second half, as Eduardo Camavinga came in. Madrid are already dealing with an injury to new signing Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has been ruled out for at least two months and Carvajal's injury further increases Alonso's headache in the right-back role.

FSG in talks to sign big-money "monster" who'd bench Konate at Liverpool

There would have been no complaints from the Liverpool squad that it was 16-year-old Rio Nguomha who took the limelight after an incredible victory over Newcastle United on Monday night.

Liverpool are two matches into their Premier League title defence, and have blown two-goal leads in both fixtures yet somehow clawed back victory at the eleventh hour.

Looking at the table, you’d call it a flawless start from Arne Slot’s side, six points from six as they push to retain a top-flight title for the first time since 1983/84.

However, the thrill of successive victories in dramatic fashion has papered over the cracks that Liverpool’s unbalanced set-up has shown since the summer break.

Slot proved himself and then some last season, and there’s every confidence that the wrinkles will be ironed out.

However, certain players look like shadows of their former selves at the moment, and no one more so than Ibrahima Konate in defence.

Ibrahima Konate's performance vs Newcastle

Konate left plenty to be desired as Liverpool scraped past Bournemouth in their Premier League opener, courtesy of a late Federico Chiesa winner from the bench.

Against Newcastle, he didn’t fare any better, having been criticised for his “poor” performances to start the campaign by Reds correspondent Lewis Steele.

On the face of it, Konate didn’t look to have done too badly on Tyneside, winning four of his six contested duels and maintaining accuracy in possession.

However, the eye test revealed a different story. The Liverpool Echo’s Ian Doyle branded the France international with a 4/10 match score, drawing attention to his unconvincing defending and his fault in missing his header in the second half, allowing William Osula to restore parity for the hosts.

Most of a Liverpool persuasion will be aware that Konate is being chased by Real Madrid, and that he is into the final year of his contract at Anfield.

Regardless of the outcome of his situation (which is starting to evoke unwanted Trent-themed memories), Liverpool need to sign a central defender before the transfer window closes.

Liverpool in talks for Konate upgrade

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Liverpool remain in talks to sign Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, who, like Konate, has entered the final year of his contract.

Crystal Palace'sMarcGuehilooks dejected.

Guehi, 25, has been one of Liverpool’s main transfer targets all summer, and it’s looking likely that an official approach will materialise in the coming days.

The main sticking point centres around valuation: Guehi will be a free agent at the end of the season, and so Liverpool consider Palace chairman Steve Parish’s £40m asking price to be exorbitant.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

FSG seek something closer to £35m, though they will be aware that Manchester City are mulling over a move too.

Why Marc Guehi would start for Liverpool

Guehi, 25, has captained Crystal Palace to their first two trophies, beating Manchester City to win the FA Cup in May and following up that triumph with a penalty shootout win over Liverpool in the Community Shield earlier this month.

CrystalPalace's Marc Guehi lifts the trophy as hecelebrates with teammates after winning the FA Community Shield

He has spent four years at Selhurst Park, having joined the south Londoners from Chelsea after graduating from the infamous Cobham academy and enjoying a successful loan spell with Swansea City in the Championship.

Now, he is one of the most refined and respected centre-halves in the Premier League, and there’s every chance that he would arrive on Merseyside and instantly take Konate’s place in Liverpool’s starting line-up, especially when considering how the Les Bleus man is playing right now.

Konate was in fine fettle indeed last season, producing his personal best campaign on Merseyside both in terms of fitness and performance from August to May.

But you could argue Guehi performed at a similar level for a side battling far lower down the divisional ladder, proving more creative with his passing and more active in defensive phases.

Described as a “monster in defence” by Palace reporter Bobby Manzi, Guehi’s technical quality is further outlined by his ranking among the top 2% of centre-backs across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for through balls and the top 11% for shot-creating actions per 90, as revealed by data-led platform FBref.

And if that isn’t enough to sell you on his quality, just take a look for the man himself in action, carrying and controlling the ball with the deftness of a midfield maestro.

Perhaps the most exciting part is that the Eagles defender has yet to make his move to the highest level, and could raise his game several levels by linking up with Slot’s squad, by allowing himself to be inculcated into Slot’s tactical knowledge.

Analyst Ben Mattinson remarked in the past that the £50k-per-week Guehi is “one of those versatile centre-backs who can play both sides equally as comfortably.”

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehireacts.

With that in mind, it seems like he could be stepping into Virgil van Dijk’s boots as the indomitable captain creeps closer toward the final stretch of his Liverpool career.

However, when considering how Konate is playing at the moment, it’s more likely that Guehi will be housed on the right side of the central defence, leaving the Frenchman languishing on the bench.

Bad news for Pedro & Delap: Chelsea in the race to sign "the next Mbappe"

It might sound like it, but it wouldn’t be hyperbolic to state that this summer has been one of Chelsea’s best in a very long time.

Enzo Maresca’s men came into it as Conference League champions and with Champions League football secured, only to then go and demolish Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final.

On top of the successes on the pitch, the West Londoners have been incredibly busy off it, welcoming in a host of brilliant players, including striker duo Liam Delap and Joao Pedro.

Yet, the Pensioners are not done there, as reports have now linked them with a goalscoring monster who is so dangerous he could be bad news for the two forwards.

Chelsea's summer business

To ensure Maresca’s side can kick on next season, the board have gone out of their way to back the manager over the last month or so.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

On top of the £60m for Pedro and the £30m for Delap, the West Londoners splashed £48m on the dynamic Jamie Gittens, who racked up 17 goal involvements in 49 games for Borussia Dortmund last season.

However, the Blues may have saved their most audacious transfer for last, as they’re now being linked to an incredibly in-demand forward who would possibly be bad news for Pedro and Delap: Hugo Ekitiké.

Yes, according to a recent report from journalist Ben Jacobs, Chelsea are one of a number of clubs who admire the Eintracht Frankfurt star.

Newcastle United are currently leading the race for his signature and have seen a £70m offer rejected, but Liverpool and Manchester United are also keen on the player, alongside the Blues, per Jacobs.

Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike

In terms of how much he’d ultimately cost, reports from earlier this summer claimed that an offer of around £85m should be enough to tempt the German side into selling.

It would be a costly and complicated transfer to get over the line, but one well worth fighting for, even if it would potentially be bad news for Pedro and Delap.

Why Ekitike could be bad news for Pedro and Delap

The first thing to say is that both Delap and Pedro are incredibly talented forwards, with the former already racking up a goal and an assist in six games for the Blues and the latter doing even better, scoring three goals in three games.

However, when it comes to pure output, the pair pale in comparison to what Ekitike was able to produce last season, and that ultimately is why his arrival could be bad news for their future game time.

For example, in 48 appearances this season, totalling 3644 minutes, the former Paris Saint-Germain ace scored a mammoth 22 goals and provided 12 assists for good measure.

In other words, the 23-year-old machine was able to maintain an average of a goal involvement every 1.41 games, or every 107.17 minutes.

In contrast, the former Brighton & Hove Albion star scored ten goals and provided seven assists in 30 appearances, totalling 2136 minutes, which comes out to a less impressive average of a goal involvement every 1.76 games, or every 125.64 minutes.

Likewise, the former Ipswich Town gem did well, scoring 12 goals and providing two assists in 40 appearances, totalling 2670 minutes, but that still comes out to a far less impressive average of a goal involvement every 2.85 games, or every 190.71 minutes.

Then, on top of his vastly superior output, the Frankfurt star, whom journalist Graeme Bailey once dubbed the “next Mbappé,” also has the advantage of more top-level experience.

Hugo Ekitike for Frankfurt.

He has made four appearances in the Champions League and 12 in the Europa League, compared to six for the Brazilian and none for the Englishman.

Ultimately, there are enough games in a season for all three to get game time, but should Chelsea sign Ekitike this summer, his outrageous ability in front of goal would surely see Pedro and Delap relegated to second and third choice, respectively.

Man Utd accept £20m+ bid to sell "amazing" ace who Amorim has wanted out

The future of an “amazing” Manchester United player now looks set to be resolved, with a new update suggesting he is on the verge of leaving Old Trafford.

Lots of Man Utd departures on the cards

After a dire 2024/25 season at Old Trafford, wholesale changes are expected within Ruben Amorim’s Red Devils squad, with Matheus Cunha already arriving from Wolves.

While United supporters will understandably be focusing on the players who come in, a host of current stars are likely to depart before the new Premier League campaign gets underway, especially in wide attacking areas.

Marcus Rashford’s name immediately springs to mind, with the 27-year-old’s Red Devils career set to reach a sad conclusion after a sustained period of poor form. He continues to be mentioned as an option for Barcelona, with a loan move to the Catalan giants mooted.

He is far from the only United attacker who is expected to move on, though, with the likes of Antony, Jadon Sancho and Alejandro Garnacho all highly likely to head off to pastures new. Now, an important update has emerged regarding one of those players.

£20m+ agreement reached for Man Utd attacker to leave

According to a fresh update from Corriere dello Sport [via Sport Witness], Manchester United have now reached an agreement over the exit of Sancho to Juventus this summer.

The Englishman looks set to leave in a £20m+ deal, having made it clear that he wants a fresh challenge, and previous claims have said Amorim also doesn’t want him at the club any longer. Sancho has also accepted a contract offer from the Italian giants worth more than £5m a season.

Chelsea's JadonSanchocelebrates scoring their first goal

Selling Sancho this summer is a no-brainer for United, even though the 25-year-old is clearly a player with bags of talent, having been hailed as “amazing” by Ian Wright during his loan spell at Chelsea last season, and lauded by Blues manager Enzo Maresca.

“Jadon is doing well. He needs to continue in the same way; work hard, every day. As I’ve said before, for sure he is going to help us. We really believe that he is a special player. But the only way for him to confirm that is by working hard every day and never be happy and always be ambitious. He needs to want more and more and more.”

Sancho’s move to United simply hasn’t worked out, though, with just 12 goals and six assists to his name in 83 appearances, and it makes complete sense for them to cash in at this point, using the money to find a superior option.

A Hojlund & Osimhen hybrid: Man Utd enter talks for "world-class" £44m CF

Manchester United appear to be making moves to land a key target for Ruben Amorim this summer.

ByEthan Lamb Jul 12, 2025

The fact that Amorim sees no future for the England international is the final nail in the coffin for him, and while he may go to Juventus and excel, as he did abroad with Borussia Dortmund in the past, the United boss will feel he is making the right decision.

Lewis McManus ignites Northants to leave Glamorgan clinging on

Hosts finish eight-down after taking on stiff run-chase through Labuschagne 64

ECB Reporters Network26-Jun-2024Northamptonshire came close to pulling off a remarkable comeback win over Glamorgan in the Vitality County Championship match against Glamorgan thanks to a career best 168 from Lewis McManus and wickets for Alex Russell and Liam Patterson-White.Northamptonshire declared on 472 for eight to leave Glamorgan a target of 262 in 39 overs. The home side made a good go of chasing down the stiff target with Marnus Labuschagne scoring his second fifty of the match but late wickets left Northamptonshire a chance of pulling off victory.Having been 211 runs behind on first innings, Northamptonshire had nine catchers around the bat in the closing overs as they pushed for the win.Glamorgan finished on 207 for eight with Northamptonshire two wickets short of victory.Northamptonshire resumed their second innings just 25 runs in front of Glamorgan but their biggest partnership of the match extended that lead significantly. Luke Procter and McManus shared a stand of 161 that lasted past lunch on the last day. As with the third day there seemed to be little threat from the quicker bowlers but Glamorgan were hampered in their pursuit for wickets by the absence of James Harris who was off the field with a quad injury. In the absence of Harris, Labuschagne came on to bowl seam and he generated some decent pace, albeit without managing a breakthrough. He also sent down a few overs of leg spin once the shine was off the new ball. The first wicket of the day came in the second session when Timm van der Gugten trapped Procter for 98, the second Northamptonshire batter to get out in the nineties in this innings after Ricardo Vasconcelos fell for 99 late on day three.Lewis McManus had past his hundred from 150 balls just before the fall of Procter’s wicket and he looked to be more attacking once he had reached his milestone, scoring at better than a run a ball as he looked to set a target for Glamorgan to chase.McManus passed 150 for the first time in first class cricket and took four consecutive sixes off Crane in the last over before Northamptonshire declared to leave Glamorgan needing to score at seven an over to win.Glamorgan were 30 for one at the tea break and after the interval they made a real push to keep the required rate under control, but that desire for quick runs brought about the demise of Billy Root when Labuschagne called him through for a very sharp single and both batters ended up at the same end.Carlson and Labuschagne kept up the intensity in their stand of 62 from 57 balls. Carlson was bowled by Alex Russell when he attempted a big shot to the shorter boundary on the Grandstand side of the ground.Labuschagne looked very keen to secure a win in his last home game in the Championship this season but he chipped a catch to point off the bowling of Liam Patterson-White for 64.Chris Cooke continued to attack but he fell for 27 looking to hit Russell over long off. Mason Crane was dismissed for a duck and Harry Podmore was bowled for 1 as Northamptonshire continued the late push to complete the comeback but Timm van der Gugten saw out the last over to secure the draw.
