Sunderland have seemingly mastered the art of making their home ground a fortress.

Indeed, Regis Le Bris’ Black Cats are two wins from two at the Stadium of Light already early into the brand new Premier League season, but the Wearside outfit has stumbled to an unwelcome 2-0 loss – away from home comforts – when travelling to fellow newly promoted foe Burnley.

Crystal Palace is the next away test on the agenda for the top-flight newcomers, with Sunderland very much aware that they will have to stifle Jean-Philippe Mateta all match long if they stand a chance at a positive result on their travels to South London.

While the Frenchman’s future looks to be somewhat in the air at Selhurst Park at the moment – with Leeds United reported to be looking at the 6-foot-4 striker – he will no doubt be raring to go in his bid to pick up more Premier League goals for the Eagles when the Black Cats come to town.

After all, the forceful attacker already has three goals next to his name this season in all competitions, with this confidently tucked away penalty last time out against Aston Villa helping Oliver Glasner’s men beat Unai Emery’s hosts with ease in a 3-0 victory.

Up to a hefty 49 goals in total for Palace, it will be up to the likes of new signing Nordi Mukiele to keep the Eagles’ goal machine quiet, with the imposing number 20 winning 12 duels last match against Brentford – on his debut no less – to restrict the visitors to just one strike.

Le Bris could also be tempted to switch up his personnel up top to try and unearth his own Mateta, with a goalscoring gem in the Frenchman’s ranks ready to be a hero once more to try and steer Sunderland to a much-needed away win.

The former Lorient boss certainly has a wide array of options all over the pitch to choose from ahead of selecting his starting XI for the trip to Glasner’s side.

Indeed, he could well feel he needs to draft in Lutshurel Geertruida to try and keep Mateta at bay, alongside potentially feeling like Wilson Isidor is the best option in attack to try and gift his men a lofty, but skilful presence to lead the line, in a similar vein to the Palace number 14.

After all, despite not starting any of his team’s opening three top-flight contests, Isidor already has an impressive two league goals next to his name, with the 6-foot-1 attacker firmly pushing his previous wasteful performances for Sunderland to one side by scoring these two strikes, despite only being on the pitch for a combined 66 minutes.

Mateta has also managed to move on past any of his own criticism by becoming a heroic figure for Palace, having once just scored a weak eight goals across his first three seasons on English shores when primarily used as a substitute option. Now, much like Isidor at the Stadium of Light, he’s a beloved presence at Selhurst Park.

Yet, the former Zenit St Petersburg forward will be hoping he can replicate Mateta’s rise even more by becoming Sunderland’s trusted starter in the Premier League – away from being known solely as a man who saves the day from off the bench – with Eliezer Mayenda often getting the starting nod this season over the efficient number 18.

If he were to start against Palace and steer Sunderland to a rare away victory, this would surely be grounds for more opportunities from the get-go from then on.

After all, his well-rounded game as an ice-cold finisher, matched with his ability to be a “one man machine”, as labelled by Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley, could perhaps allow him to be a recognised Premier League star down the line, like the equally varied Mateta.

With Brian Brobbey also now available for selection, Le Bris is spoiled for choice.

But, he will hope he’s rewarded for gifting Isidor a possible start by his side picking up an away win for the first time this season, as they continue to try to navigate the early choppy waters of the Premier League without drowning under all the pressure.

Hammers closing in on deal to sign Wilson

With Michail Antonio set to leave this summer, despite undergoing rehabilitation at West Ham, Graham Potter will need to bring in a new striker, and Callum Wilson is now closing in on a move to the London Stadium, having agreed personal terms.

Wilson is available on a free transfer, upon the expiration of the Englishman’s Newcastle United contract, meaning he would be a low-risk addition to the squad, but there are likely to be some justified concerns over the striker’s injury record.

The 33-year-old has suffered persistent injury problems at Newcastle, meaning he was unable to score a single Premier League goal last season, so there are doubts over whether the veteran forward would be a good acquisition for the Irons.

Indeed, according to a report from Football Insider, the Hammers have now made an approach to sign FC Metz striker Idrissa Gueye, but there is likely to be stiff competition for the 18-year-old’s signature.

According to a report from Spain, Tottenham is Rodrygo’s ‘most concrete option’ if he is to leave the Bernabeu over the coming weeks.

Friedkin reportedly want to splash out as much as £150m this summer, having already welcomed Thierno Barry, Mark Travers and Alcaraz to kick things off.

Eyeing a replacement for Abdoulaye Doucoure, as well as another midfielder, plus a new right-back and right-winger, Everton have already reportedly set their sights on the likes of Douglas Luiz and James McAtee.

The latter would be a particularly impressive signing, given how he still starred for Manchester City last season even in the face of little game time. The last time that City sold such a prospect, it was Chelsea who benefited and Cole Palmer who thrived. Now, the Toffees could be next in line.

From Tony Adams to Ashley Cole, from Cesc Fabregas to Jack Wilshere, and from Bukayo Saka to Ethan Nwaneri, it’s safe to say Arsenal have spawned some of the best young talent in world football over the last three decades.

The start of Mikel Arteta’s reign was dominated by that man, Saka, and now, a few years into his tenure, it appears as though Nwaneri is beginning to make a name for himself too, starring in the offensive line.

With 15-year-old Max Dowman also causing a stir at youth level, the Gunners certainly look like they’re set up for a bright future.

From the above list, we’ve missed off a few names, perhaps most notably Myles Lewis-Skelly. Sadly for him, Andrea Berta and Co could be about to sign some competition.

Reports from the Athletic this week suggest that they are looking to sign someone who can play second fiddle to William Saliba and Gabriel with Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi earmarked. We’ve also seen less concrete reports suggesting that Arsenal are looking at former Manchester City centre-back, Aymeric Laporte, who now plays in Saudi Arabia.

However, there’s a player who’s a great deal more exciting than both of them; Jorrel Hato.

Arsenal have a long-standing interest in the Ajax star and this summer, he could finally be on the move with a host of clubs interested in prising him away from Amsterdam.

The young Dutchman is attracting the interest of Chelsea, but recent reports from journalist Graeme Bailey this week suggest their London rivals have also held talks regarding a move.

Bailey revealed that Arsenal considered a move for £40m-rated defender last summer and are now considering making a formal bid following ‘successful talks’ with Ajax.

How Hato could replicate Arsenal's great young talents

It’s safe to say that when things have been tough for Arteta at Arsenal, the younger players at his disposal have come up trumps.

It was Saka and Emile Smith Rowe who combined so successfully during the Spaniard’s first year at Arsenal and with injuries decimating the squad in 2024/25, it was Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly who stood up.

The former ended up playing 37 matches in all competitions, scoring nine goals, most notably bagging against Manchester City in Arsenal’s remarkable 5-1 win at the Emirates.

Also on the scoresheet that day was Lewis-Skelly whose meteoric rise has been staggering. He hadn’t made his debut for the club before this season but ended the campaign having dominated Real Madrid, shone against PSG and even scored on his England debut.

Well, Hato, aged just 19, is very much cut from the same cloth as his fellow teenage stars.

Like Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly, he made his senior debut as a boy. While Nwaneri was only 15 at the time of his Premier League debut, making him the youngest player in the competition’s history, Hato was only 16 when Ajax gave him his Eredivisie debut.

Since then, the defender – who can play at left-back and centre-back – has risen up the ranks remarkably swiftly.

He’s already played 111 times for the Dutch giants – making him the youngest member of Ajax’s 100 club, and has been described as “one of the most talented CBs of his generation in Europe” by scout Jacek Kulig.

Also labelled as an “elite talent” by data analyst Ben Mattinson, Hato evidently has the world at his feet. He’s making a stir just as Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly have. He’s got the confidence and swagger they both have too.

Incredibly, he’s already got amazing leadership skills despite his tender age. He’s captained his boyhood club on several occasions, which is just one of many boxes Hato seems to tick.

Versatile? Check. Leadership skills? Check. Experience in Europe? Check. This would be an amazing deal if Arteta and Co can get it over the line.

According to a recent report from Give Me Sport, Leeds are preparing a bid to sign Valentin Atangana from Reims. The 19-year-old is said to be available for an affordable price given the French side were relegated last season, but the Whites are not alone in their pursuit, as many other Premier League teams are also chasing his signature.

Meanwhile, Leeds have also received a boost in their pursuit of a new goalkeeper, as Southampton owner Dragan Solak has revealed that Aaron Ramsdale could leave the Saints this summer.

“We unfortunately are not sure that Ramsdale is going to stay, even though he loves the club. He’s a great young man; everybody loves him, but he wants to get his place in the national team, and it’s not easy to get there in the Championship.”

Strengthening up front is a major priority for Daniel Farke, and according to Football Insider, Leeds are now preparing to make a new offer to sign Rodrigo Muniz from Fulham.

Leeds are desperate to add Muniz to their squad and have already seen a bid of £26 million plus £6 million in add-ons, which totals £32 million rejected in this transfer window.

Muniz is considered a top striker target for the Whites, but despite his contract ending in 2026, Fulham do have an option to extend that by 12 months, meaning they hold all the cards at the moment. It doesn’t state how much Leeds are willing to bid in their next offer, but Fulham are said to be confident of pricing them out, so it would almost certainly have to surpass their current record signing of £35.5m on Georginio Rutter.

Muniz, who has been described as “strong” by Alan Shearer, joined Fulham in 2021 but has had to remain very patient for a chance at Craven Cottage. After spending time on loan at Middlesbrough in the 2022/23 season, he has become a regular under Marco Silva.

The forward played 26 games in the Premier League during the 2023/24 season, during which he scored nine goals, and he then bettered that with 31 Premier League games last season, scoring eight goals in the process. Muniz has that proven Premier League experience that Leeds and Farke are looking for; it just remains a question of how much Leeds are willing to spend to get their man.

Will Celtic enjoy a strong end to yet another memorable season?

On Saturday, the Hoops fought back from a goal down to win 3-1 at Parkhead; Nicolas Kühn, Adam Idah and then Reo Hatate the scorers for Celtic.

As a result, Brendan Rodgers’ side could conclude the campaign with as many as 94 points, travelling to Pittodrie on Wednesday, before facing St Mirren on trophy presentation day, which has become a near-annual event, on Saturday.

They’ll then face Aberdeen again the following weekend at Hampden in the Scottish Cup Final, seeking to secure a sixth domestic treble in just nine seasons.

Despite their continued domination of Scottish football, Rodgers is not satisfied and always demands improvement, so could Celtic sign a highly-rated defender in a deal that would be reminiscent of Josip Juranović’s move from the not-too-distant past?

As part of the major summer rebuild when Ange Postecoglou first arrived at Celtic in the summer of 2021, 14 senior players were signed, including Juranović, joining from Legia Warszawa for a reported fee of £2.5m.

Well, despite actually only making 53 appearances in hoops, the Croatian international certainly proved to be fantastic value for money, describing his 18 months in Glasgow as “the best of his life”.

Juranović quickly established himself as a fans’ favourite, with Total Football Analysis praising his ‘versatility… aerial ability and physicality’ as well as his leadership qualities.

Thus, in January 2023, shortly after helping Croatia reach the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar, Juranović joined Union Berlin for a reported £10m, representing a 400% return on investment in just a year-and-a-half.

It’s safe to say that Celtic’s recruitment when it comes to plucking hidden gems has worked well and they could repeat that trick here, luring another defender from the continent to Scottish shores.

As previously reported by Mirko Marković of Maxbet Sport earlier this month, Celtic are ‘very interested’ in signing defender Veljko Milosavljević from Serbian champions Crvena zvezda, adding that the youngster has shown great ‘potential’ this season.

Despite his lack of first-team experience, Milosavljević has earned rave reviews.

Aleksandar Radonić of Serbia outlet Kurur labels him ‘one of the most talented’ youngsters to come through Red Star Belgrade’s academy in recent times, adding that the centre-back, who stands at 6 foot 3, was ‘especially impressive’ during a recent eternal derby victory over Partizan, claiming he is now valued at around €4m (£3m).

So, where would he fit into Celtic’s team?

Well, for four seasons now, Cameron Carter-Vickers has been the club’s undisputed first-choice central defender, racking up 157 appearances since arriving from Tottenham, despite a few injury problems.

This season, fellow-American international Auston Trusty as well as Liam Scales have been vying to be Carter-Vickers’ partner, but that position is certainly up for grabs, and Milosavljević more than appears to have all the attributes and qualities to come in and make that position his own.

Given that, as noted by teammate Kasper Schmeichel, Carter-Vickers’ qualities lie “with the ball at his feet”, Milosavljević’s physical profile suggests he would be a dream centre-back partner.

Thus, if Celtic can secure his services for as little as £4m, that would appear to be a fantastic investment.

The England international signed for the Red Devils from Chelsea for a reported fee of £55m ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, and has had a rough time in Manchester so far.

Since the start of last season, Mount has missed a whopping 50 matches through calf and hamstring injuries, which have heavily disrupted his time at Old Trafford.

When available, however, the English attacking midfielder has not done enough to justify the money spent on his services, with a return of one goal and one assist in 39 appearances in all competitions.

This has led to his market value, as per Transfermarkt, plummeting to just £24m, which shows that he has been a flop for Manchester United so far because the midfielder has not delivered goals or assists, or consistent availability, and is now worth significantly less than the fee they paid for him.

Mount is not the only player from that batch of recruitment in 2023 who has not been good enough, though, as Andre Onana should be ruthlessly ditched by INEOS this summer.

Manchester United reportedly paid £47.2m to sign the Cameroon international from Ajax in the summer of 2023, and his value has plummeted in the two years since then.

It was recently reported that the club would consider offers of at least £20m for Onana, which means that he could be sold for even less than Mount is currently worth (£24m).

As you can see in the highlights above, Onana most recently had a night to forget against Lyon with two mistakes in the Europa League, which led to him being dropped against Newcastle United in the Premier League.

That came directly after former United midfielder Nemanja Matic dubbed him “one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United’s history” after being asked about Onana’s claim that his team were better than Lyon.

Whilst the Red Devils eventually won the tie over two legs, the Cameroon international’s personal performances did not do much to dismiss Matic’s harsh claim.

As you can see in the table above, making errors is not a new issue for Onana because the shot-stopper has been error-prone throughout his two seasons in Manchester to date.

He has not been a reliable, safe, pair of hands between the sticks, due to these errors in the Premier League, the Champions League, and the Europa League, and that is why INEOS must ruthlessly cash in on him this summer.

United should look to move Onana on, whether that is for a fee of £20m or another figure, and then attempt to recruit a replacement who can be relied upon week-in-week-out at the top level, without Amorim having to be concerned about his goalkeeper making calamitous errors consistently.
