Tottenham in contact to sign £78m star who Spurs think may help title push

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly intensifying contact to sign a £78m “superstar” who Spurs think could help with a Premier League title push.

Heung-min Son to leave Tottenham

The main north London news in recent days has been on Heung-min Son’s pending Spurs departure this summer, with the South Korean star revealing he will leave the club ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Talking at a press conference during the pre-season tour, Son, who lifted the Europa League title just months ago, shared an emotional goodbye.

Son looks on course to head to the MLS with LAFC, leaving Daniel Levy and Thomas Frank on the search for a replacement to the star forward.

Real Madrid winger Rodrygo has been mentioned as a potential target, and there has been a new update on a potential transfer.

Tottenham intensify contact to sign Rodrygo

According to a report from Spain, Tottenham is Rodrygo’s ‘most concrete option’ if he is to leave the Bernabeu over the coming weeks.

Arsenal, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain haven’t made the Brazilian a priority target, leaving Spurs with a free run at a swoop for the £78m-rated forward.

It is claimed that Spurs chiefs, along with Frank, ‘have intensified contact with the player’s entourage to convince him of the project’ in north London.

Tottenham are ‘planning the right moment to launch an official offer’ for Rodrygo, who they think ‘could be key to making the final leap in their quest to win the Premier League’.

A move looks like it could still be one to keep an eye on following this update, with Rodrygo, now aged 24, capable of playing on either wing or through the middle.

Everton now preparing £35m offer to sign "amazing" ex-Real Madrid player

As Everton get their pre-season underway, The Friedkin Group are reportedly preparing a £35m proposal to welcome another key reinforcement for David Moyes and his side.

Everton commence Hill Dickinson era

A new era is officially underway at Everton after they squared off against Port Vale in their first-ever game at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. In many ways it was, of course, an insignificant game. But it will have its place in history and so will Carlos Alcaraz for scoring the first-ever goal for Everton men’s at their impressive new ground.

After sealing a 2-1 victory against their latest pre-season opponents, Everton will now travel to the USA to take part in the Premier League Summer Series. It’s there that they will square off against Bournemouth, West Ham United and Manchester United in three tough tests to hand them a glimpse of what could be to come next season.

It’s not just pre-season that those in Merseyside should be concerning themselves with between now and next season, however. There’s also still plenty of work to be done on the transfer front.

Friedkin reportedly want to splash out as much as £150m this summer, having already welcomed Thierno Barry, Mark Travers and Alcaraz to kick things off.

Eyeing a replacement for Abdoulaye Doucoure, as well as another midfielder, plus a new right-back and right-winger, Everton have already reportedly set their sights on the likes of Douglas Luiz and James McAtee.

James McAtee

The latter would be a particularly impressive signing, given how he still starred for Manchester City last season even in the face of little game time. The last time that City sold such a prospect, it was Chelsea who benefited and Cole Palmer who thrived. Now, the Toffees could be next in line.

Before then, though, Friedkin are seemingly planning to turn their focus towards an impressive La Liga star.

Everton preparing Takefusa Kubo offer

According to reports in Spain, Everton are now preparing a formal €40m (£35m) offer to sign Takefusa Kubo from Real Sociedad this summer. The Japan international has enjoyed a standout spell at Sociedad at times in the last three years, having swapped Real Madrid for the chance to become the star that he is today in 2022.

Now, the Premier League could be calling and Everton could yet make an impressive statement. Once a Liverpool target, Kubo may come back to haunt those at Anfield at the opposite end of Merseyside next season.

Previously dubbed “amazing” for his form by scout Jacek Kulig, Kubo is still just 24 years old and still has plenty more to come. There’s no doubt that he’d also be an instant upgrade on Jack Harrison.

Alongside Barry, Kubo’s arrival would continue the much-needed attacking changes taking place at Everton this summer, as they step into a new era at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

He's shades of Nwaneri: Berta holds talks to sign £40m star for Arsenal

From Tony Adams to Ashley Cole, from Cesc Fabregas to Jack Wilshere, and from Bukayo Saka to Ethan Nwaneri, it’s safe to say Arsenal have spawned some of the best young talent in world football over the last three decades.

The Hale End academy is revered around Europe and they’re not slowing down.

The start of Mikel Arteta’s reign was dominated by that man, Saka, and now, a few years into his tenure, it appears as though Nwaneri is beginning to make a name for himself too, starring in the offensive line.

Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri comes off for Bukayo Saka.

With 15-year-old Max Dowman also causing a stir at youth level, the Gunners certainly look like they’re set up for a bright future.

From the above list, we’ve missed off a few names, perhaps most notably Myles Lewis-Skelly. Sadly for him, Andrea Berta and Co could be about to sign some competition.

Arsenal targeting one of the finest young talents in Europe

A lot of the talk so far this window has been dominated by the elusive striker. Will Benjamin Sesko or Viktor Gyokeres arrive? Only time will tell.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

That said, it’s important that Berta doesn’t neglect other areas of the pitch, and probably to the dismay of Arsenal fans aplenty, the defence could be bolstered again.

Reports from the Athletic this week suggest that they are looking to sign someone who can play second fiddle to William Saliba and Gabriel with Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi earmarked. We’ve also seen less concrete reports suggesting that Arsenal are looking at former Manchester City centre-back, Aymeric Laporte, who now plays in Saudi Arabia.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehi

However, there’s a player who’s a great deal more exciting than both of them; Jorrel Hato.

Arsenal have a long-standing interest in the Ajax star and this summer, he could finally be on the move with a host of clubs interested in prising him away from Amsterdam.

The young Dutchman is attracting the interest of Chelsea, but recent reports from journalist Graeme Bailey this week suggest their London rivals have also held talks regarding a move.

Bailey revealed that Arsenal considered a move for £40m-rated defender last summer and are now considering making a formal bid following ‘successful talks’ with Ajax.

How Hato could replicate Arsenal's great young talents

It’s safe to say that when things have been tough for Arteta at Arsenal, the younger players at his disposal have come up trumps.

It was Saka and Emile Smith Rowe who combined so successfully during the Spaniard’s first year at Arsenal and with injuries decimating the squad in 2024/25, it was Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly who stood up.

Myles Lewis-Skelly for Arsenal

The former ended up playing 37 matches in all competitions, scoring nine goals, most notably bagging against Manchester City in Arsenal’s remarkable 5-1 win at the Emirates.

Also on the scoresheet that day was Lewis-Skelly whose meteoric rise has been staggering. He hadn’t made his debut for the club before this season but ended the campaign having dominated Real Madrid, shone against PSG and even scored on his England debut.

Well, Hato, aged just 19, is very much cut from the same cloth as his fellow teenage stars.

Like Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly, he made his senior debut as a boy. While Nwaneri was only 15 at the time of his Premier League debut, making him the youngest player in the competition’s history, Hato was only 16 when Ajax gave him his Eredivisie debut.

Since then, the defender – who can play at left-back and centre-back – has risen up the ranks remarkably swiftly.

He’s already played 111 times for the Dutch giants – making him the youngest member of Ajax’s 100 club, and has been described as “one of the most talented CBs of his generation in Europe” by scout Jacek Kulig.

Also labelled as an “elite talent” by data analyst Ben Mattinson, Hato evidently has the world at his feet. He’s making a stir just as Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly have. He’s got the confidence and swagger they both have too.

Incredibly, he’s already got amazing leadership skills despite his tender age. He’s captained his boyhood club on several occasions, which is just one of many boxes Hato seems to tick.

Versatile? Check. Leadership skills? Check. Experience in Europe? Check. This would be an amazing deal if Arteta and Co can get it over the line.

49ers readying record Leeds bid to sign "strong" top target for Farke

Leeds United are now considering a fresh transfer bid to sign their top forward target, according to a new report.

Leeds chasing multiple transfer targets

The Whites confirmed their second signing of the summer transfer window on Monday, as Jaka Bijol has now signed a five-year deal to keep him at the club until 2030. But the Championship title winners are not wasting any time in identifying their next moves.

As exciting as Buendia: Leeds expected to make move for £18m EFL star

There is a belief that Leeds will make a move for a star who would be as exciting as Emi Buendia.

1 ByDan Emery Jun 23, 2025

According to a recent report from Give Me Sport, Leeds are preparing a bid to sign Valentin Atangana from Reims. The 19-year-old is said to be available for an affordable price given the French side were relegated last season, but the Whites are not alone in their pursuit, as many other Premier League teams are also chasing his signature.

Meanwhile, Leeds have also received a boost in their pursuit of a new goalkeeper, as Southampton owner Dragan Solak has revealed that Aaron Ramsdale could leave the Saints this summer.

We unfortunately are not sure that Ramsdale is going to stay, even though he loves the club. He’s a great young man; everybody loves him, but he wants to get his place in the national team, and it’s not easy to get there in the Championship.”

Leeds readying fresh Muniz bid

Strengthening up front is a major priority for Daniel Farke, and according to Football Insider, Leeds are now preparing to make a new offer to sign Rodrigo Muniz from Fulham.

Leeds are desperate to add Muniz to their squad and have already seen a bid of £26 million plus £6 million in add-ons, which totals £32 million rejected in this transfer window.

Muniz is considered a top striker target for the Whites, but despite his contract ending in 2026, Fulham do have an option to extend that by 12 months, meaning they hold all the cards at the moment. It doesn’t state how much Leeds are willing to bid in their next offer, but Fulham are said to be confident of pricing them out, so it would almost certainly have to surpass their current record signing of £35.5m on Georginio Rutter.

Muniz, who has been described as “strong” by Alan Shearer, joined Fulham in 2021 but has had to remain very patient for a chance at Craven Cottage. After spending time on loan at Middlesbrough in the 2022/23 season, he has become a regular under Marco Silva.

The forward played 26 games in the Premier League during the 2023/24 season, during which he scored nine goals, and he then bettered that with 31 Premier League games last season, scoring eight goals in the process. Muniz has that proven Premier League experience that Leeds and Farke are looking for; it just remains a question of how much Leeds are willing to spend to get their man.

He's a dream for Carter-Vickers: Celtic can sign new Juranovic for just £3m

Will Celtic enjoy a strong end to yet another memorable season?

On Saturday, the Hoops fought back from a goal down to win 3-1 at Parkhead; Nicolas Kühn, Adam Idah and then Reo Hatate the scorers for Celtic.

As a result, Brendan Rodgers’ side could conclude the campaign with as many as 94 points, travelling to Pittodrie on Wednesday, before facing St Mirren on trophy presentation day, which has become a near-annual event, on Saturday.

They’ll then face Aberdeen again the following weekend at Hampden in the Scottish Cup Final, seeking to secure a sixth domestic treble in just nine seasons.

Despite their continued domination of Scottish football, Rodgers is not satisfied and always demands improvement, so could Celtic sign a highly-rated defender in a deal that would be reminiscent of Josip Juranović’s move from the not-too-distant past?

Josip Juranović's impact at Celtic

As part of the major summer rebuild when Ange Postecoglou first arrived at Celtic in the summer of 2021, 14 senior players were signed, including Juranović, joining from Legia Warszawa for a reported fee of £2.5m.

Former Celtic defender Josip Juranovic.

Well, despite actually only making 53 appearances in hoops, the Croatian international certainly proved to be fantastic value for money, describing his 18 months in Glasgow as “the best of his life”.

Juranović quickly established himself as a fans’ favourite, with Total Football Analysis praising his ‘versatility… aerial ability and physicality’ as well as his leadership qualities.

Thus, in January 2023, shortly after helping Croatia reach the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar, Juranović joined Union Berlin for a reported £10m, representing a 400% return on investment in just a year-and-a-half.

It’s safe to say that Celtic’s recruitment when it comes to plucking hidden gems has worked well and they could repeat that trick here, luring another defender from the continent to Scottish shores.

Celtic targeting a new defender

As previously reported by Mirko Marković of Maxbet Sport earlier this month, Celtic are ‘very interested’ in signing defender Veljko Milosavljević from Serbian champions Crvena zvezda, adding that the youngster has shown great ‘potential’ this season.

Milosavljević, who is just 17-years-old, made his senior Super liga Srbije debut for Red Star Belgrade against Radnički Niš as recently as December, with the table below outlining his career statistics so far.

Despite his lack of first-team experience, Milosavljević has earned rave reviews.

Aleksandar Radonić of Serbia outlet Kurur labels him ‘one of the most talented’ youngsters to come through Red Star Belgrade’s academy in recent times, adding that the centre-back, who stands at 6 foot 3, was ‘especially impressive’ during a recent eternal derby victory over Partizan, claiming he is now valued at around €4m (£3m).

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Meantime, scout Gianni Bellasi describes him as a “physically imposing” defender who is a “reliable presence”, while Blair Meikle of the National believes the teenager is one of the ‘hottest young prospects’ in European football right now.

So, where would he fit into Celtic’s team?

Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Well, for four seasons now, Cameron Carter-Vickers has been the club’s undisputed first-choice central defender, racking up 157 appearances since arriving from Tottenham, despite a few injury problems.

This season, fellow-American international Auston Trusty as well as Liam Scales have been vying to be Carter-Vickers’ partner, but that position is certainly up for grabs, and Milosavljević more than appears to have all the attributes and qualities to come in and make that position his own.

Given that, as noted by teammate Kasper Schmeichel, Carter-Vickers’ qualities lie “with the ball at his feet”, Milosavljević’s physical profile suggests he would be a dream centre-back partner.

Thus, if Celtic can secure his services for as little as £4m, that would appear to be a fantastic investment.

Worth less than Mount: INEOS must axe Man Utd flop who's "one of the worst"

Manchester United find themselves 14th in the Premier League table after their 1-1 draw with Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday.

The Red Devils needed a stoppage-time equaliser from Rasmus Hojlund to avoid a 16th defeat in the top-flight this season, in what has been a significantly below-par campaign for the club.

INEOS and Ruben Amorim must work together to ensure that the recruitment work this summer is spot on, as there have been too many missteps in recent years, including the signing of Mason Mount in the summer of 2023.

Why Mason Mount has been a flop for Manchester United

The England international signed for the Red Devils from Chelsea for a reported fee of £55m ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, and has had a rough time in Manchester so far.

Rasmus Hojlund and Mason Mount

Since the start of last season, Mount has missed a whopping 50 matches through calf and hamstring injuries, which have heavily disrupted his time at Old Trafford.

When available, however, the English attacking midfielder has not done enough to justify the money spent on his services, with a return of one goal and one assist in 39 appearances in all competitions.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

This has led to his market value, as per Transfermarkt, plummeting to just £24m, which shows that he has been a flop for Manchester United so far because the midfielder has not delivered goals or assists, or consistent availability, and is now worth significantly less than the fee they paid for him.

Mount is not the only player from that batch of recruitment in 2023 who has not been good enough, though, as Andre Onana should be ruthlessly ditched by INEOS this summer.

Why Man Utd should sell Andre Onana

Manchester United reportedly paid £47.2m to sign the Cameroon international from Ajax in the summer of 2023, and his value has plummeted in the two years since then.

It was recently reported that the club would consider offers of at least £20m for Onana, which means that he could be sold for even less than Mount is currently worth (£24m).

As you can see in the highlights above, Onana most recently had a night to forget against Lyon with two mistakes in the Europa League, which led to him being dropped against Newcastle United in the Premier League.

That came directly after former United midfielder Nemanja Matic dubbed him “one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United’s history” after being asked about Onana’s claim that his team were better than Lyon.

Whilst the Red Devils eventually won the tie over two legs, the Cameroon international’s personal performances did not do much to dismiss Matic’s harsh claim.

As you can see in the table above, making errors is not a new issue for Onana because the shot-stopper has been error-prone throughout his two seasons in Manchester to date.

Manchester United'sAndreOnanaduring the warm up before the match

He has not been a reliable, safe, pair of hands between the sticks, due to these errors in the Premier League, the Champions League, and the Europa League, and that is why INEOS must ruthlessly cash in on him this summer.

United should look to move Onana on, whether that is for a fee of £20m or another figure, and then attempt to recruit a replacement who can be relied upon week-in-week-out at the top level, without Amorim having to be concerned about his goalkeeper making calamitous errors consistently.

Tests abandoned without a ball bowled – how many times has it happened before?

War and pandemics aside, there had been seven such instances before the Afghanistan-New Zealand Test in Greater Noida

Sreshth Shah13-Sep-2024A Test to be called off without a ball being bowled is very rare. Barring games cancelled due to war and pandemics, it has happened only seven times previously, with the Afghanistan vs New Zealand game in Greater Noida being the eighth such instance in the 147-year history of the format. Here is a look at the circumstances under which the previous seven games were abandoned completely.England vs Australia, Old Trafford, 1890
Those days, Test matches were three days long, and Australia were looking to earn a consolation victory in the third and final Test of the tour against WG Grace’s England when they arrived in Manchester. But it rained on all three days, leaving the organisers with no option but to call off the Test without even a toss. It was a damp end to a thrilling tour that included 34 first-class matches and the three-Test series which England won 2-0.England vs Australia, Old Trafford, 1938
Manchester was the scene once again, nearly half a century later. The teams were the same, although by now Test matches were four-day affairs with a rest day in between. Wally Hammond and Don Bradman were the captains, and the Old Trafford Test was supposed to be the third Test in the five-match Ashes series. The weather, though, did not allow the toss again, and the teams moved to Leeds next for the fourth game.Australia vs England, Melbourne Cricket Ground, 1970
This time it was in Australia that rain played havoc. Now, Tests had become five-day affairs, and the first two Tests of what was originally a six-match series had been drawn. England elected to bowl at the toss, but right when the teams were heading out, it began to rain, and it did for three straight days in Melbourne. Once it was clear a proper Test wasn’t possible, the administrators got together and came up with a remarkable plan to thwart the idea of a third straight draw and recoup lost revenue. They organised a 60-over one-innings-a-side game on the scheduled fifth day, and it was watched by around 46,000 fans, thereby retrospectively earning status as the first-ever ODI. The organisers also hastily arranged for a seventh Test later in January 1971 to make up for the lost fixture.New Zealand vs Pakistan, Dunedin, 1989
It was an inauspicious start to the three-Test series as the heavy, sweeping rain on the first two days of the Dunedin Test left nearly no chance of a result, and the game was cancelled by day three. However, with conditions improving on the scheduled fourth day of the Test, the two captains John Wright and Imran Khan agreed to play an ODI instead where Richard Hadlee claimed 5 for 38. The next two Tests of the tour went on without a hitch, although those too were draws and the series honours were shared.West Indies vs England, Bourda, 1990
England arrived in Guyana with a 1-0 lead in the four-game series, but a week of torrential rain leading up to the second Test left the Bourda outfield under water. With three days already lost, a contentious early decision was made on the scheduled rest day to call off the game altogether and instead host an ODI on the scheduled fourth day. That ODI could not take place either due to wet conditions, and so the ODI was moved to the scheduled fifth day. A 49-overs-a-side game was finally possible, and Gordon Greenidge’s 77 sealed a comfortable win for the hosts.Pakistan vs Zimbabwe, Faisalabad, 1998
Thick December fog welcomed both sides in Faisalabad for the third Test of the series. Visibility was so poor that after the second day, most players did not even come to the venue in the morning. On day four, the umpires called off the game. However, some commentators felt the decision was made in haste as conditions had improved by the afternoon. The PCB was also criticised for scheduling a Test in Faisalabad, a place where December fog was the norm. The silver lining for Zimbabwe, though, was that the abandoned Test ensured they won their maiden Test series after 15 previous attempts.New Zealand vs India, Dunedin, 1998
It was a remarkable coincidence that the sixth and seventh abandoned Tests were called off on the same day – December 20, 1998. While fog played spoilsport in Faisalabad, it was the rain in Dunedin that had the final say. As the rain continued into the third day of the first Test between New Zealand and India, the umpires called the fixture off, forcing a second abandoned Test in Dunedin. For Umpire Steven Dunne, it was the second time in his career – after Dunedin 1989 – to have to abandon a game, and an unofficial one-dayer was played on the scheduled fourth day.

Released by CSK, Jagadeesan serves timely notice ahead of IPL auction

The Tamil Nadu batter has worked hard on developing a more aggressive approach to his game

Shashank Kishore, with inputs from Deivarayan Muthu21-Nov-2022N Jagadeesan is a positive person. He tends to find hope, according to friends and team-mates, in tough situations. Like he did when MS Dhoni, in a rare outburst, spoke of how the youngsters on the bench at Chennai Super Kings “lacked spark” after their dismal showing in the first half of IPL 2020.Jagadeesan, 26 now, was one of those youngsters who sat out for much of that season. And when he was asked if Dhoni’s comment had hurt, Jagadeesan’s response was that it was the captain’s way of “firing up youngsters to stand up and deliver”.Last week, Jagadeesan was one of eight players released by CSK ahead of the auction on December 23. It brought an end to a four-year stint with the team, during which he’d only played seven games. And like several others released, Jagadeesan was back on the long and winding road that is India’s domestic cricket to chart a way forward. One week later, Jagadeesan is in the news again, this time for spark turning into a wildfire in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He came into the tournament with three List A hundreds in 36 matches across five years. Nine days on, Jagadeesan has nearly tripled that tally, becoming the first batter in history to score five consecutive List A centuries.Related

How the IPL teams stack up ahead of the 2023 player auction

Jagadeesan's 277 shatters world records in List A cricket

On Monday, when he smashed 277 off 141 balls against Arunachal Pradesh at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, he surpassed the record of four consecutive tons held by Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara, South Africa’s Alviro Petersen and India’s Devdutt Padikkal. He also shattered Alistair Brown’s two-decade old record for the highest List A score of 268. His innings included 25 fours and 15 sixes.Jagadeesan’s previous four hundreds in the tournament had come against Haryana (128), Goa (168), Chhattisgarh (107) and Andhra (114 not out). In comparison, the record-breaking 277 was against a vastly inexperienced Arunachal Pradesh attack that had a combined 43 wickets between them. All said, runs are runs, and his feat helped Tamil Nadu shatter the record for the highest score in List A cricket, as they blasted 506 for 2 in 50 overs.Even as the sensational news began to make waves on social media, Jagadeesan’s knock itself was witnessed by no more than a handful of people. At the innings break, the Tamil Nadu team manager was lining up to chat with the video analyst and retrieve footage of the innings. Jagadeesan appeared his usual self – chirpy and jovial with his team-mates as they prepared to field. This Vijay Hazare Trophy has been all the more crucial for Jagadeesan because he has been able to shake off the perception of being a batter who plays a safe game. It also ended talk of his form being on the wane, especially after a disappointing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he managed just 118 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 131.11.ESPNcricinfo LtdOn Monday, Jagadeesan got to his century off 76 balls; took just 23 more deliveries to bring up the 150; and another 15 balls to get to his double-century. This aggressive approach could make a difference when his name comes up for bidding at the IPL auction. So far, Jagadeesan has played only seven IPL games and batted just four times, scoring 73 runs for CSK at a strike rate of 110.61. One of the factors that supposedly prevented him from getting more opportunities was that he was an accumulator and not an aggressive batter. And with the growing clamour for dynamism in T20 cricket, Jagadeesan decided to work on developing his skills. Those who have followed Jagadeesan in Chennai’s cricket circles vouch for his work ethic. Even though he wasn’t a part of CSK’s traveling contingent during the 2019 IPL season, his drive was not dimmed. Jagadeesan would often play a league game in the morning and return to train at Chepauk with the squad during their home games. While opportunities in the IPL have been few, Jagadeesan has been prolific for Chepauk Super Gillies in the Tamil Nadu Premier League. Last year he made 336 runs – third most in the tournament – in 10 innings at a strike rate of 125.37. There may have been concerns about his ability to accelerate, and he has recognised his shortfalls and worked on overcoming them. While you could argue that four of his five hundreds have come at relatively small grounds in Alur on the outskirts of Bangalore, those who watched Jagadeesan bat vouch for how he’s managed to accelerate seamlessly. His knocks have earned praise from a number of talent scouts – from the Super Kings camp too.Having been a key part of Tamil Nadu’s white-ball revolution over the years, Jagadeesan is now enjoying a sensational run of form. And a timely one too. He was sold to CSK at his base price of INR 20 lakh at the mega auction earlier this year. After a record-breaking 277 off 141 balls, the demand for his skills is likely to be higher come December 23.

How often have rival captains got each other out in the same Test?

And what is the highest score by a player in his first innings as captain in a Test?

Steven Lynch14-Jul-2020How often have the rival captains got each other out in the same Test, as Ben Stokes and Jason Holder did at the Rose Bowl? asked Kevin Mills from England

The exciting behind-closed-doors match in Southampton was the 12th Test in which both captains had dismissed each other, but the first to include three such dismissals. It was the second time Jason Holder had been involved in such an occurrence, as he and Zimbabwe’s Graeme Cremer accounted for each other in Bulawayo in 2017-18.Holder’s double dismissal of Ben Stokes was the 19th occasion one captain had disposed of his opposite number in both innings of a Test – and it was the third time Holder had done it: he dismissed Shakib Al Hasan of Bangladesh twice in Kingston in 2018, and then, in West Indies’ most recent Test before the one at the Rose Bowl, he removed Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan in both innings in Lucknow in November 2019. Shakib dismissed India’s Virender Sehwag twice in Chittagong (now Chattogram) in 2009-10, and in return Sehwag caught Shakib in both innings. The wily Australian Richie Benaud dismissed his opposite number twice in a Test on two occasions, and also claimed the wicket of England’s Ted Dexter once in each of the five matches in the 1962-63 Ashes series.Stuart Broad was dropped after playing 51 successive Tests at home. Was this a record for England (or everyone)? asked Dennis Mitchell from England

There have been two England players with longer unbroken home runs than Stuart Broad’s 51. Since he played 159 successive Tests in all – the record – it’s not surprising to find Alastair Cook top of this list too: he played 89 in succession at home between 2006 and 2018. Cook’s longtime opening partner Andrew Strauss played 61 successive Tests in England.Another similar run came to an end in Southampton, as Joe Root missed the match to be at the birth of his second child. It ended his run of 77 successive Test appearances in all, second only for England behind Cook. There wasn’t a single six hit at the Rose Bowl. When was the last time this happened? asked Dewan Rezwan Rabbi from Bangladesh

You’re right to think that this is a rare event these days. The Test in Southampton was the first not to feature a six for about 145 matches, since the Boxing Day Test between South Africa and Sri Lanka in Port Elizabeth in December 2016. There have been only 28 Tests with no sixes since the turn of the millennium.Virat Kohli made a century in each innings in his first Test as captain, in 2014•Getty ImagesWhat is the highest score by a player in his first innings as captain in a Test? asked Savo Ceprnich

The highest Test score by a captain in his first innings in charge is 239, by New Zealand’s Graham Dowling, against India in Christchurch in 1967-68. Shivnarine Chanderpaul also scored a double-century – 203 not out for West Indies v South Africa in Georgetown in 2004-05. The highest in the second innings of a captain’s debut Test is 163, by Clive Lloyd for West Indies against India in Bangalore in 1974-75.The most runs in total on captaincy debut is 256, by Virat Kohli, with 115 and 141 against Australia in Adelaide in 2014-15. Greg Chappell also scored two centuries in his first Test as captain, for Australia against West Indies in Brisbane in 1975-76.Who conceded 149 runs in his only Test without taking a wicket? asked Gordon Brine from South Africa

This unfortunate bowler was the Australian legspinner Bryce McGain, who won his only cap against South Africa in Cape Town in March 2009, the week before his 37th birthday. McGain nearly took a wicket early on, as Christian Ryan remembered in this evocative piece for ESPNcricinfo, but after that he was caned, finishing with 0 for 149 from just 18 overs as South Africa ran up 651. McGain took 86 first-class wickets for Victoria – and ten in two matches for Essex in 2010.Use our
