Ed Pollock hundred seals Warwickshire spoils after Jacob Bethell checks Derbyshire

Openers scored maiden List A ton to seal straightforward chase in rain-affected game

Ed Pollock’s maiden List A century led Warwickshire to their first Royal London One-Day Cup win of the season as Derbyshire were beaten by eight wickets at Derby. Warwickshire chased down a Duckworth-Lewis-Stern adjusted target of 205 in a match reduced to 42 overs by rain with Pollock unbeaten on 103 off 115 balls out of 207 for 2.Rob Yates made 60 after Derbyshire were restricted to 200 for 9 by the spin of 17-year-old Jacob Bethell who took 3 for 32 while former Yorkshire bowler Karl Carver claimed 2 for 35. Fynn Hudson-Prentice made an unbeaten 51 and Harry Came scored 45 but Derbyshire fell well short of a challenging total.Derbyshire were heading for a bigger score after Came and Tom Wood put on 87 in 17 overs against an attack missing 11 bowlers through injury and call-ups to the Hundred. But Wood’s dismissal, bowled by one that skidded on from Bethell, saw Derbyshire slip to 176 for 7 in the 40th over.Came was caught behind cutting at Carver, signed on a three-week contract the previous evening, and Alex Hughes went the same way when he made room against Bethell.Anuj Dal drove Bethell to extra cover and Nils Priestley failed to clear long-on which left Hudson-Prentice to get Derbyshire up to 200. He glanced the final ball of the innings for his fourth four to reach 50 but Derbyshire needed early wickets to have a chance of defending a below par score.Jacob Bethell was among the wickets•Getty Images

They should have removed Yates on 2 in the third over but an edge off Ravi Rampaul went through the hands of Ben Aitchison at slip. Yates and Pollock took 63 from the first Powerplay and with no need to take risks, the pair passed 100 in the 18th over.Derbyshire broke the stand in the 24th over when Yates was bowled making room to cut Woods but it was not enough to change the course of the game. Will Rhodes drove Woods for six and when Rampaul was brought back, Pollock pulled the West Indian for six and four off consecutive balls. Rhodes was caught behind off Hudson-Prentice but Pollock struck the winning boundary with five overs to spare.A minute’s silence was held before the game in memory of former Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and England seamer Mike Hendrick who has died aged 72.

"Decisive" Fulham forward now set to miss multiple games after injury blow

Ahead of the visit of West Ham United, Fulham have been hit with frustrating injury news which has ruled one forward out for multiple games including the clash with the Hammers.

Fulham injury news

The Cottagers have shown glimpses of their quality so far this season, with their one victory over Leicester City arguably coming at an important time in between a narrow 1-0 loss against Manchester United and a frustrating draw against Ipswich Town. Marco Silva’s side are a difficult side to judge these days.

Fulham struck gold on "insane" star who's worth more than Smith Rowe

He is a key player under Marco Silva

ByJoe Nuttall Aug 27, 2024

Avoiding relegation will still be their first goal, but it wouldn’t be absurd to suggest that Fulham are now in position to set their sights on causing a few shocks towards the Premier League’s top-half. Just last season, they found themselves sat in 13th and just two points shy of the top 10. A repeat of such an achievement or potentially more would undoubtedly receive rightful applause around Craven Cottage.

Fulham’s first task will be to get back to winning ways in a London derby against West Ham, which they’ll be forced to do without the attacking impetus of one player. As confirmed by Silva, Carlos Vinicius will now miss the West Ham game through injury and is also likely to miss Fulham’s Carabao Cup tie against Preston North End on Tuesday.

The forward should feel particularly frustrated about the Preston game, given that it represented a chance to make his first appearance of the season. Ruled out, however, the Brazilian must now wait for an opportunity to come his way in the Premier League.

"Decisive" Vinicius is at a crossroads

After failing to get his move away amid links to the likes of Red Bull Bragantino in the summer, Vinicius finds himself at a slight crossroads. Whilst Fulham are yet to find a like-for-like replacement for Aleksandar Mitrovic over a year on from his departure to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, Vinicius seems unlikely to emerge ahead of Raul Jimenez and particularly Rodrigo Muniz.

Making the former Tottenham Hotspur loanee a third-choice under Silva, he may be left with little choice but to pursue a January departure. Whether Silva would be keen to part ways with the forward is another argument in itself though, having praised Vinicius’ performance against Luton Town last season.

Silva said via West London Sports: “He made the impact that we needed in that moment on the pitch, not just because he scored – but of course scoring is always the most important thing for a striker.

“It was nice to see Carlos score. He deserved the chance to go in and it was nice to see him be decisive for us. The competition (with Raúl Jiménez) is also important to us.”

Of course, Muniz proves that form will earn a place in the current Fulham side, but whether Vinicius can finally find his goalscoring touch at Craven Cottage remains to be seen.

ExWHUEmployee reveals West Ham’s next target after Aaron Wan-Bissaka

West Ham United have been busy throughout the summer transfer window in an attempt to bolster Julen Lopetegui's options across the pitch.

The Hammers have swooped to sign the likes of Guido Rodriguez, Crysencio Summerville, Niclas Fullkrug, and Jean-Clair Todibo, among others, and are now closing in on another. Manchester United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka has reportedly started his medical with the club after they agreed a deal to sign him on a permanent basis from the Red Devils.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka for Manchester United

After a move for the former Crystal Palace full-back is completed, West Ham could make another addition to Lopetegui's defence in the coming weeks.

West Ham eyeing up Ligue 1 defender

Having already dipped into the Ligue 1 market to sign Todibo from Nice, the Premier League side, who are not competing in Europe this term, are keen on another defender from France. According to ExWHUemployee, via his Patreon, the Hammers have identified Nantes central defender Nathan Zeze as a target this month.

Technical director Tim Steidten has pulled off many impressive deals this summer, and he is now targeting a move for a teenage talent who could be one for the future.

The report claims that West Ham see Zeze as being a bright prospect and a promising talent, which means that he could come in as a long-term option for Lopetegui, rather than one to make an immediate impact.

Max Kilman and Todibo have already been added to the centre-back ranks, with Konstantinos Mavropanos and Nayef Aguerd already at the club, and that could mean that the Nantes youngster would not be a frontline option straight away.

Why Nathan Zeze could be a good signing for West Ham

The central defender only turned 19 in June and has had limited exposure to first-team football so far in his career, which is why he would likely be one for the future, but at 6 foot 3 he should have no trouble with the physicality on offer in England's top flight and may even still have room to grow.

With the aforementioned centre-back options at Lopetegui's disposal, West Ham could bring in Zeze to eventually take over from them further down the line, whilst going out on loan or learning as a fringe player in his first two or three seasons at the London Stadium.

The French titan made his Ligue 1 debut for Nantes during the 2022/23 campaign against Lille, in what was his only appearance of the season, before featuring more regularly last term.

The right-footed defender played 13 top-flight matches for his club and held his own from a physical perspective, winning the majority of his duels on the deck and in the air. However, he also made one error that directly led to a goal and was dribbled past once every other match, which suggests that Zeze still has plenty to learn to avoid making mistakes.

The teenage ace, who was described as "impressive" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, is not the finished article but is a promising young player who could be moulded by Lopetegui over the years to come, which is why he could be an excellent addition this month.

Ashley Giles defends Covid protocols after outbreak causes squad swap

England director says relaxed measures, in line with rest of UK, were appropriate

George Dobell06-Jul-2021Ashley Giles insists there has been no breach of Covid protocols from the England squad despite an outbreak of positive cases.England were forced to pick an entirely new squad of players and support staff for the ODI series against Pakistan after seven members of the party originally selected (four from the management unit and three players) tested positive for the virus. But while Giles, the managing director of England’s men’s teams, admits rules may be tightened in light of the episode, he defended both the ECB’s protocols and the squad’s behaviour in adhering to them.Instead, he suggested the ECB were in “an almost impossible situation” as they attempted to retain some measure of protection on the squad while society opens up all around them despite escalating numbers of positive cases.”I’m very confident the players haven’t breached any of those protocols,” Giles said. “We can’t say where it [the virus] originated, but we can identify how some of this has developed through close contact.”We haven’t gambled. I don’t believe we’ve gambled at all. We are fully aware of the risks and we are aware of the knife edge that we are working on all the time. We are trying to look after our people and keeping them sane while protecting the revenues of the whole game. It is a difficult balance to strike.”Let’s stop talking about relaxed protocols. If we haven’t got sole use of hotels, if we have grounds with crowds and you have staff coming in and out of the environment then, however much testing you do, there is going to be risk. We are seeing an almost-impossible situation as society opens and the virus is still spreading.”Related

David Payne 'can't stop smiling' after left-field England call-up

It is understood that everyone involved in the squad had received at least a first vaccine, with Giles promising to “get everyone double-vaccinated as soon as we can.”At the start of the summer, the England management had hoped they would be able to relax the rules around the squad. With the Delta variant creating a new spike in cases, however, most of those plans were shelved. So while the teams no longer have entire hotels to themselves – as was the case in the summer of 2020 – they are still not permitted to eat in restaurants or visit bars for anything more than takeaway coffee. The ECB are mindful of the mental strain of asking players to live in bio-bubbles for concerted periods of time, however, and have made efforts to ensure players could see more of their families. So while players involved in the Sri Lanka series were not allowed home ahead of the Pakistan series, their families were permitted to visit them.”We always hoped we would open up as society opened up,” Giles said. “That was always the plan until the variant arrived. But actually what we had planned – in terms of much more access to families, eating outside, the normal freedoms other people are taking for granted right now – just didn’t happen.”But if relaxing is allowing those guys to eat together or spend some time together – and they spend a lot of time in the dressing room together where that infection can happen – it’s almost impossible to completely remove all risk from the environment.”This year’s protocols have been very close to last year’s protocols. Guys were able to go and play golf, as they were last year under the right risk assessments. There was a period at the start of the trip when, after a risk assessment, guys were able go and exercise outdoors and grab a takeaway coffee. But that was it.”That was two-and-a-half weeks ago when the country was in a different place. Since that point, the squad have been living under very tight restrictions, so this is a frustration for everyone.Ashley Giles keeps an eye on proceedings•PA Photos/Getty Images”We are certainly juggling with the amount of time our players have spent in these environments. We have extremely busy schedules and we’ve been doing this now for 14 or 15 months. To expect them to stay away from each other [at games], go back to the hotel, put their masks on and go straight back to their rooms and eat on their own… it’s almost impossible for that period of time without losing people.”But yes, last year we lived in bio-secure environments and this year we tried to operate in what we called ‘safe environments’. Hotels weren’t sole use. We were sharing certain spaces within the hotel but not key areas like eating areas. And given this variant, which is clearly more infectious, the risk of us catching infection in the group was obviously going to go up.”Despite the team management’s desire to minimise the sense of isolation players may feel while they are in the bubble, Giles warned that protocols are likely to be tightened in the immediate future. Not only would there appear to be a growing risk from the Delta variant, but doubts over the viability of the series will increase if there is another large-scale outbreak. At this stage, these is no indication that Pakistan – or, indeed, India – are expressing reservations about upcoming matches, but the ECB will feel the need to rebuild the sense of security they achieved last year. There is, at this stage, no guarantee that the new squad will prove entirely free of the virus, either.”During this period – these next six games – I think we are going to have to tighten up the environment,” Giles said. “I think it’s unlikely that we’ll have [family] visits into the hotels. Previously those visits were very carefully risk-assessed and arduous, actually.”But we’re still going to be in shared spaces in hotels so there’s still risk. So I think we need to be all over our protocols. And while I don’t think we’ve been slack, I think we just need to reinforce that, with a new group of people, some of them have never been in these environments.”It’s an unprecedented situation in terms of what we have been able to do from making the decision that that squad was not viable to having a new group of players and management team. We are dealing with difficult circumstances and there is still a bit of unknown. We probably won’t sleep easy until we have got through those PCR tests and arrive in Cardiff.”

Jacques Kallis named as England batting consultant for Sri Lanka Test tour

ECB insists tour plans continue “as normal” in spite of raft of travel measures against UK

Jacques Kallis has been appointed as England’s latest batting consultant for next month’s Test series in Sri Lanka, a tour that the ECB insists is set to go ahead as planned in spite of the heightened uncertainty over the UK’s latest wave of measures to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic. The ECB last week stepped up its search for full-time appointments for their batting, pace- and spin-bowling coaching vacancies, with applications due to close on January 10, meaning that Kallis’s appointment may be the last consultancy role used by the board. Similar appointments were made for Jonathan Trott during the Pakistan Tests last summer, and Marcus Trescothick on the recent white-ball tour of South Africa. At this stage, Kallis is not expected to be involved in England’s subsequent Test tour of India – although that may yet change, with the ECB having flagged the need to rotate their options for the foreseeable, to mitigate against the strain of living, practising and playing in bio-secure environments. With that in mind, Graham Thorpe, England’s regular assistant coach to Chris Silverwood, has been rested for this leg of the winter, but is expected to be back on board for the India tour. Jon Lewis, the former Gloucestershire and England seamer, travels as fast-bowling coach, while James Foster continues as wicketkeeping consultant in the wake of Bruce French’s retirement last summer, as does Jeetan Patel as spin consultant.Related

ECB step up coaching recruitments for England men's squads

However, it is Kallis’s appointment which is the most eye-catching for the coming tour. He secured his status as an all-time great with 13,206 Test runs at 55.37 for South Africa, in addition to 292 wickets, while his mastery of Asian conditions is renowned, with eight centuries at 55.62 in 25 Tests in the region. This time last year, Kallis was working as a batting consultant for South Africa’s Test team during their 3-1 series loss against England. However, with CSA committing in September to a policy of affirmative action for future consultant roles, Kallis’s opportunities for further work within his home country are limited, particularly now that the role of High Performance Batting Consultant, a position that spans all levels of the professional game in South Africa, has gone to his former team-mate Neil McKenzie.Discussions between Kallis and the ECB are understood to have taken place earlier this month, and have been described as “very quick and simple”. He is expected to link up with the squad when they travel to Hambantota on January 2, ahead of the first of two Tests against Sri Lanka in Galle starting January 14.Concerns over the viability of the tour, which was belatedly confirmed by the Sri Lankan government earlier this month after protracted negotiations, have resurfaced this week given the extensive travel bans being imposed on the UK by several countries, following the spread of a new variant of the coronavirus. That includes England’s other new-year Test opponents, India, whose government has suspended UK flights as a temporary measure from December 22-31. England’s squad are due to fly directly to India at the conclusion of their Sri Lanka tour on January 27.ESPNcricinfo understands that a meeting is due to take place between Sri Lanka health authorities and those in the UK to discuss the implications of the latest Covid updates. However, given the financial importance of the England tour to Sri Lanka’s finances, and the recent success of the Lanka Premier League, there is no suggestion yet that the tour is in peril. An ECB spokesman told ESPNcricinfo: “We continue to plan as normal. We have regular meetings with Sri Lanka and there is another meeting planned for this week.”

Cole Palmer tipped to join Barcelona as Chelsea are warned to expect difficult conversation with England star

Gallas believes that Palmer will look to leave Chelsea if the Blues do not improve under Enzo Maresca and look like they will win trophies in the near future. The former France defender added that he does not believe Palmer will be happy watching his England team-mates winning trophies if he does not – especially if he maintains his form. Gallas also thinks Barcelona would be a good fit for the midfielder.

    WHAT GALLAS SAID

Gallas said: "Cole Palmer might want to leave Chelsea in the future if they don’t show they can win trophies, but where would he go? Barcelona would be a great move for him, but they have great young players already like Lamine Yamal and might also be signing Nico Williams.

"Palmer looks like he is going to have a very similar season to last year and even though he is young, it will be tough to see his friends winning trophies if he isn’t at Chelsea despite the way he is playing. I won’t be surprised if he wants to speak to Chelsea in the summer if they again fail to win a trophy. He will want to know clearly what their targets are."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

There is no indication that Palmer will look to engineer a move away from Chelsea and to Barcelona, despite Gallas' suggestion. The English midfielder signed a lengthy contract when he joined the Blues and had his terms renewed this summer. With his contract running until 2033, it would take a mammoth bid for Barcelona to prise Palmer away.

Gallas may have to wait until the end of the season for his suggestion will come to light.

– Confiança no trabalho.
