Their next Summerville: Leeds chasing "remarkable" new signing

Leeds United fans would have been pleased to see the likes of Wilfried Gnonto and Crysencio Summerville line up against Harrogate Town in their side's first pre-season clash in front of supporters, with the terrifying attacking duo given all of the second half to strut their stuff.

Neither would get on the scoresheet, but the in-demand pair would still run rings around the bamboozled League Two outfit's defence on the night, with Daniel Farke's men winning 3-0 at the end of the valuable run-out.

Farke and Co could be facing a losing battle to keep both Leeds stars situated at Elland Road beyond this action-packed transfer window, however, with the Whites now looking at a tricky winger as a possible summer signing.

Leeds interested in exciting Crystal Palace youngster

According to a report from the Daily Mail, the Championship promotion candidates are eyeing up a swoop for highly-rated Crystal Palace youngster Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, who could soften the blow of either Gnonto or Summerville exiting shortly.

The Eagles have already brushed aside Southampton's advances for Rak-Sakyi reportedly, as Russell Martin's men were keen to sign the 21-year-old permanently, with a loan move to the second tier now potentially opening up instead.

rak-sakyi-crystal-palace

Sheffield United and Sunderland are named as the other interested parties alongside Leeds, with Rak-Sakyi perhaps taken by the allure of Elland Road out of this trio of suitors, owing to the fact Summerville and Gnonto have excelled bombing down the wings when given the license to just maraud forward.

Rak-Sakyi would operate very much in a similar fashion if a move got over the line, and he could well end up being the club's very next Summerville if everything works out smoothly.

What Rak-Sakyi could offer Leeds

Watching the clip above of Rak-Sakyi's skills in action on loan at Charlton Athletic during the 2022/23 season, the 21-year-old should shine in the Championship having previously set the division below alight.

The agile 5 foot 10 attacker would help himself to 15 goals and nine assists playing for the Addicks further down the EFL from 49 overall clashes, with League One defences regularly scared stiff by Rak-Sakyi's darts up the pitch and his eventual deadly end product.

It would be unreasonable to expect the promising 21-year-old to immediately fill the void left by Leeds' mercurial Dutchman if he was to leave however, but his 23 goal contributions in League One that season should stand him in good stead to take to the demands of the Championship well.

Summerville did manage to amass 29 goal contributions himself for Farke's men in league action, but Rak-Sakyi would be eyeing up Gnonto's spot more so than the ex-Feyenoord youngster's left flank, and could even take it away from him if the Italian was to stay put this summer.

Rak-Sakyi has even impressed for Palace in the Premier League, the level that Gnonto is crying out for, with a 64-minute cameo last season for the Eagles number 49 against Nottingham Forest seeing him make three successful dribbles and have two shots blocked.

It's that dazzling dribbling ability – completing 1.8 per game in the third tier last term – that sees him compare so nicely to Summerville. For context, he succeeded with 2.3 dribbles per match in 2023/24.

It could well be time, therefore, for the "remarkable" attacker – as he has been described in the past by ex-Palace boss Roy Hodgson – to take the Championship by storm out on loan, before coming back to Selhurst Park eager to impress more.

West Ham could speed up move for £15k-p/w midfielder after Alvarez injury

West Ham could step up their interest in a new midfielder following the latest news surrounding Edson Alvarez, it has been revealed.

Alvarez suffers Mexico blow

After a strong debut season in the Premier League, Edson Alvarez's Copa America dreams went up in smoke over the weekend. The Mexico skipper was forced off the pitch in tears after half an hour of their clash with Jamaica, which his side went on to win 1-0.

He appeared to have suffered a serious hamstring injury and his tournament is most likely over. He may have already done enough to earn a summer move away from Julen Lopetegui's side though, with Manchester United reportedly keen on adding him to their ranks in a move that would see him reunite with former boss Erik ten Hag, who coached him at Ajax.

Quizzed on the links, Alvarez did little to play them down: “I can only tell you that I’m focused on what I have to do. I know that the Copa America is a very important tournament where the eyes of the world are basically there. Later, there will be time to see what there is or what there isn’t."

Were he to leave, he would leave a hole in the West Ham engine room, but it appears that they have already identified his replacement in that case.

West Ham eye Alvarez alternative

That comes with West Ham named as one of the sides chasing Watford midfielder Ismael Kone, who is set to star at Copa America with Canada.

Kone made 42 appearances for the Hornets last season, grabbing four goals and three assists, and a strong tournament with Canada could put him firmly in the shop window despite still having three years left to run on his £15,000 a week deal at Vicarage Road. He drew strong praise from former Watford boss Slaven Bilic back in 2023 after an impressive debut.

"He’s young and has a lot of potential. Today he showed me that he can also make an impact on the quality of our game straight away", Bilic explained.

“He looks an athlete and he’s good on the ball. Out of possession there are some positioning things we’ll help him learn. When he’s challenging a player he is aggressive and has strength. He was very, very good, in both phases of the game.”

Now, he could be on the move with the reliable ExWHUemployee explaining that West Ham were one of several suitors chasing the 22-year-old, and that the chase could speed up if Alvarez cannot play through injury or transfer away.

“I can confirm that West Ham do have an interest in Watford player Ismael Kone,” Ex said over the weekend “The injury to Edson Alvarez could encourage West Ham to speed up their interest in the player and make a move sooner than planned."

Presumably, the same can be said were Alvarez to depart the club on a permanent basis this summer amid ongoing speculation, with Kone seen as the natural replacement for the Mexican midfielder.

While West Ham fans will be hoping that he stays at the London Stadium this summer, hearing that the club have a succession plan in mind is a welcome change to some of the more recent scattergun transfer policies in east London.

Jonny Bairstow unavailable for Melbourne Stars, replaced by Andre Fletcher

Bairstow is set to earn an England recall for the Test series in Sri Lanka early next year

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Dec-2020Melbourne Stars have been forced to make a late change to their BBL squad signing West Indies batsman Andre Fletcher after Englishman Jonny Bairstow was ruled out due to international duty.Bairstow was expected to be available for the Stars after Christmas after completing the 14-day mandatory quarantine in Australia following England’s limited-overs tour of South Africa. However, he is expected to be recalled to England’s Test squad for the tour of Sri Lanka in January. The Stars moved swiftly to sign Fletcher, who like fellow Stars signing Nicholas Pooran, has been in New Zealand playing in the T20I series.”We’re naturally disappointed Jonny won’t be able to link up with us this season but we wish him well on his recall and England’s winter tours,” Stars coach David Hussey said.”We’re glad Andre was in a position to join us and he’ll bring plenty of power and entertainment at the top of the batting order. Andre is a former T20 World Cup winner with the West Indies so he knows what it takes to succeed in major tournaments and I’m confident he’ll be a great asset around our group.”Fletcher has played 200 T20 matches worldwide with extensive experience in the Caribbean Premier League, the Bangladesh Premier League, and the Pakistan Super League. He is likely to be available for the Stars for the regular season up until January 26.”I’m really looking forward to coming over to the Melbourne Stars and being part of what should be an exciting season ahead,” Fletcher said. Hopefully, I can bring my brand of batting and recent form to the Stars during the BBL.”

David Warner disappointed with Sunrisers 'complacency' in middle overs

After a spectacular collapse in which Sunrisers Hyderabad went from needing 27 runs from 24 balls with seven wickets in hand to losing by 12 runs against Kings XI Punjab, David Warner said his batsmen had been “complacent” in the middle overs. The Sunrisers bowlers had restricted Kings XI to 126 for 7 on a slow, turning pitch in Dubai, and Warner himself provided a fast start in the chase, smashing 35 off 20. When he was the first wicket to fall after the powerplay, the Sunrisers needed 71 runs from 83 balls. But a middle-overs strangle meant they were eventually bowled out for 114 in 19.5 overs.”In regards to our batting, obviously very disappointed,” Warner said at the post-match press conference. “We didn’t get the job done. We were probably a bit complacent in the middle. We didn’t take the game on enough like we did the previous game (their victory against the Rajasthan Royals). I think we probably just felt that we were just going to get the runs easily, and then we sort of let the balls get ahead of the runs. That’s what happens in a game of cricket, if you give your opposition a sniff it can get taken away from you very fast.”Warner felt the batsmen should have assessed the conditions better and looked to play sensibly, especially with the required rate below six.He was fulsome in his praise for the bowlers, however, having pulled Kings XI back from their own brisk start.”I think our bowlers did an incredible job to bowl them out [restrict them] for under 130,” Warner said. “I felt that they did an exceptional job through the middle period to take wickets and to use the pitch to their advantage. I think in previous games we probably didn’t do that as well as we would have liked [with the ball], and today was a special day for them.”Warner himself adopted a changed approach while batting. In IPL 2020 so far, he had played more of an anchor role for the Sunrisers, averaging 37.22 before this game but at a strike rate of 124.07, well below his career strike rate. However, on Saturday he went hard at the bowling from the start, judging that it was the best time to score runs on this pitch.”Yeah, I was going back to my old-school days,” he said with a hint of a smile. “I was opening my front leg and just taking on the powerplay, something I haven’t done for a long time. It’s one of those things, where I felt that the best part of the powerplay was to try and go after it, go after their main bowler who swings the ball and is a very good bowler – [Mohammed] Shami. So I just tried to apply a little bit of pressure. And yeah, it’s fair to say that I’ve probably been quite reserved the last few years, so it was nice to open the front leg and show that I’ve still got that.”The Sunrisers have eight points with only three games in hand – and those are against the three teams currently at the top of the table: the Delhi Capitals, the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Mumbai Indians. They will not only have to win those for a realistic shot at making the playoffs, but will also probably depend on net run rate to go through.”I would like to think that the team will do that, definitely,” Warner said. “We’ve got three challenging games coming up, one here and two in Sharjah. If you want to win the tournament, you’ve got to beat the top three teams and that’s what we face in our next assignment.”

He wants the job: Chelsea could now appoint Madueke’s dream manager

After going through the process of hiring a new manager and rebuilding the squad last summer, Todd Boehly’s Chelsea will have to repeat it all over again.

Mauricio Pochettino’s exit from Stamford Bridge was instantly a shock to many, including the players, and the owners now have the difficult task of proving that their decision was correct.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino

Therefore, it’s of utmost importance that whoever replaces the Argentine brings not only success but also entertaining football.

There is one manager target who’s proven he can provide just that while also having a track record of improving players, and one of those could be Noni Madueke.

Chelsea’s search for Pochettino’s replacement continues

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, via CaughtOffside, Chelsea could look to make Enzo Maresca their new boss.

It’s reported that the Italian is desperate to jump at the chance to become the new manager at Stamford Bridge, with Romano saying he’s “super open and super keen.”

Leicester manager Enzo Maresca.

The Leicester City boss has already turned down an offer to join Sevilla, as his goal is to stay in the Premier League.

Yet if Chelsea do decide that he’s the best fit for the job, then a £8.5m release clause will have to be met.

Why Maresca could make Madueke unstoppable

Around the time of his £29m move from PSV, Madueke was regarded as one of the most promising forwards in Europe.

Noni Madueke.

Football scout Jacek Kulig highlighted his incredible ability, stating that the forward “has the potential to become a world-class winger,” but unfortunately, his time at Stamford Bridge hasn’t been a breeze.

The England international has been in and out of the team all season, starting just 13 games but making 22 appearances, boasting an output of five goals and two assists.

However, the man to fix his struggles and guide him towards extreme development could be Maresca, who’s been incredible at Leicester.

Despite losing the likes of James Maddison and Youri Tielemans, the Italian had the Foxes playing some fantastic football, dominating the ball and scoring the second-most goals in the division, all while also conceding the fewest in the league, which ultimately handed them the Championship title.

Yet, it is his influence on the individuals in his team that makes him so special, particularly the role he played in the development of 20-year-old Abdul Fatawu Issahaku.

The youngster shares a similar profile to Madueke in terms of being a pacy, left-footed right winger who’s direct in his approach.

Leicester’s loanee played a huge role in the success of the team, scoring six goals and registering a fantastic 13 assists, which is the sort of output expected of Chelsea’s number 11.

Maresca’s system promotes wide attacking play, where the wingers are instructed to attack with intent and freedom, as shown by Fatawu's output, and if he can have such an impact on the Ghana international, it’s expected that similar results will occur with Madueke.

Noni Madueke

With that in mind, it’s no surprise to see that Boehly is keen to bring the former Manchester City coach on board, especially if he can transform players already at the club.

Shafali Verma's stunning 49 off 28 outshines Ashleigh Gardner's 93

A stunning innings by the 16-year-old wunderkind Shafali Verma launched India Women on the way to a dramatic victory over the T20 World Cup favourites Australia. In doing so they announced their genuine candidacy for the global tournament and also ensured the hosts need to beat England at the Junction Oval on Sunday to qualify for the final of the triangular series that is proving to be a bruising warm-up for the event.Verma’s 49 off 28 balls, combined with a calming 55 off 48 from her opening partner Smriti Mandhana, were the difference as India ran down Australia’s 5 for 173 with two balls to spare. The hosts had appeared well-placed at the innings break after Ashleigh Gardner’s powerful 93 off 57 balls with support from Meg Lanning and Beth Mooney, but a halting last few overs proved costly as India went on the charge from the very first over of their chase. With Verma batting fearlessly and Mandhana providing key support, there was further support from Jemimah Rodrigues, before captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma helped India to their highest successful chase in the format. With two losses in three T20Is, this is the first time the Australians have struggled to this extent since 2017 when they lost four out of five.Gardner builds after first over dramasLate-comers to the Junction Oval missed a dramatic start to the afternoon as Alyssa Healy’s survival of a missed stumping cost India precisely one ball. Deepti’s offbreak lured Healy down the pitch out of what seemed idle curiosity as much as intent to score, and a lack of turn saw the ball pass the bat. But Taniya Bhatia was unable to collect the ball cleanly, allowing Healy to scramble back into her crease and reset – for a moment. The very next delivery was dragged down short, only to be tugged straight to midwicket by Healy as India celebrated their good fortune. Gardner walked out to join Beth Mooney, and there were a few more nervy moments as a few lofted shots landed just out of reach of the fielders. These near-misses soon gave way to cleaner blows as Gardner unfurled her power game in the fashion that has prompted Australia to use her at No. 3. Mooney was content to rotate the strike, and when she perished to a Harleen Deol full-toss, Meg Lanning offered similar support, albeit speckled with a few more boundaries.Haynes, Perry splutter at the finishIndia’s fielding display was far from the standard required, exemplified by the missed stumping to start with and several other clear missed chances besides. Gardner made merry as a result, piling up 11 boundaries and three sixes while adding 62 in 47 balls with Mooney and then a whip-cracking 79 in 42 balls with Lanning. That stand meant that the Australians looked ready to launch at 2 for 141 with 29 balls remaining, but the exits of Lanning for 37 and then Gardner, much to her chagrin, for 93, signalled a loss of acceleration.Ashleigh Gardner plays a cut•Getty Images

Ellyse Perry and Rachael Haynes added 22 together but took 19 balls to do it, even with one mighty six from Perry in the final over bowled by Rajeshwari Gayakwad. They also survived another Indian fielding muck-up, this time a comedy of errors when it appeared easier to run out one of Perry or Haynes than neither. In the end, Perry was lbw when she moved too far across the stumps on the penultimate ball of the innings.Verma’s shots heard round the worldOn what had dried out into a beautiful batting pitch, the tourists had a chance provided they got a swift start. “Swift” proved to be too mild an adjective for the hurricane that was Verma, who took a hyper-aggressive approach from the very first over of the chase and was rewarded with a series of boundaries. The opening overs read like a list of cricket teams and squads: 11, 12, 11, 14 and 14 meaning the powerplay was to be worth 70 and the target drastically reduced.Verma’s fearlessness and sharp eye were complemented perfectly by Mandhana, who found her own occasional boundary in between plenty of singles and alert running between the wickets. Some formidable Australia bowlers – Jess Jonassen, Megan Schutt and Perry – were momentarily humbled by Verma, and captain Lanning was left looking far and wide for bowling options. No fewer than seven bowlers were to be tried, but it was Perry who snared Verma for a breathless 49 from 28 balls to pull Australia back into the contest.Tourists hold nerve for victoryIn Verma’s slipstream, Rodrigues kept scoring at the required tempo with her own sparkling contribution, adding 37 with Mandhana with only a slight dip in the run rate after the opening stand of 85 in 50 balls. When Rodrigues did err, offering a thin edge behind to Healy off Schutt, Harmanpreet provided plenty of experience and poise to the pursuit as Mandhana reached a meritorious half-century.With 16 still required off 12 balls, a tight over from Nicola Carey could have turned the game towards Australia. But although she managed to win an lbw verdict against Mandhana, two fours including one swatted between mid-on and midwicket by Deepti off Carey’s final ball meant only four remained to be collected from the final over. Harmanpreet and Deepti kept their heads for a rousing win. The World Cup race is widening by the day.

Babar Azam and Umaid Asif put the royal seal on Karachi Kings' victory

In the hunt for what would have been just the fourth successful 200-plus chase in PSL history, Darren Sammy and Liam Livingstone nearly got Peshawar Zalmi over the line. But excellent death bowling from Umaid Asif in the final over ensured that Karachi Kings held on for a thrilling 10-run win at the National Stadium on Friday afternoon. The Kings’ victory was set up by a brilliant 97-run partnership between Babar Azam and Imad Wasim. They got together after Cameron Delport fell in the ninth over to a sharply turning googly from Mohammad Mohsin and supercharged the Kings innings. It took an excellent piece of hustle from Tom Banton to run Azam out and break the stand in the 18th over. But by then, the home side had 170 on the board and Iftikhar Ahmed blasted a four and two sixes off the only three balls he faced to put an even more emphatic stamp on proceedings.Babar Azam turns into the leg side•Associated Press

Chris Jordan struck a pair of early blows in the chase, getting Banton lbw on review and yorking Haider Ali three balls later. But Kamran Akmal led a revival with 43 off 26 balls before handing the keys over to Livingstone in the 10th over. Zalmi already needed to score two runs a ball at that stage, but Livingstone and Sammy somehow kept up with the rate. Then, needing 16 to win off the final over, with Sammy on strike, Zalmi’s boundaries dried up as Asif kept the batsmen off balance with an array of slower balls and cutters bowled into the pitch.Turning pointAsif produced a phenomenal effort in the final over, culminating in a sensational return catch to dismiss Sammy. After a pair of singles and a two brought the equation down to 12 off 3 balls, he banged one in short and outside off. The batsman skied an attempted pull over short midwicket. Asif stopped in his follow-through, changed direction, circled back 20 yards to his right, then lunged forward to complete a very difficult catch. On strike for the penultimate ball, needing a pair of sixes to win, Livingstone flubbed a knee-high full toss tamely into the covers for a single to effectively seal victory for the Kings.Star of the dayAzam played a special knock to lead the Kings’ recovery after they had been sent in to bat. He was especially fluent through the off side, finding a majority of his seven fours and two sixes there, including perhaps the shot of the day, a blistering six over extra cover off Hasan Ali in the 15th over. When Wasim started to accelerate alongside him, Azam was happy to rotate the strike and would almost certainly have carried on to reach three-figures if not for Banton’s excellence. The big missBy umpire Richard Illingworth. Banton has been a rampaging menace on the T20 circuit over the last year. But Jordan had him foxed with a clever offcutter two balls into the fourth over which the batsman swung over the top of to be trapped deep in his crease and in front of middle stump. Jordan flew into an appeal and was borderline apoplectic when Illingworth turned it down. Wasim wasted little time in calling for a review and DRS showed the delivery taking out middle stump three quarters of the way up, allowing the decision to be corrected.Where the teams standKings moved level with Quetta Gladiators at the top of the table on two points after two games. Zalmi joined Islamabad United on zero points, alongside Multan Sultans and Lahore Qalandars who are set to play their opening games later on Friday.
