Shafali Verma's stunning 49 off 28 outshines Ashleigh Gardner's 93

A stunning innings by the 16-year-old wunderkind Shafali Verma launched India Women on the way to a dramatic victory over the T20 World Cup favourites Australia. In doing so they announced their genuine candidacy for the global tournament and also ensured the hosts need to beat England at the Junction Oval on Sunday to qualify for the final of the triangular series that is proving to be a bruising warm-up for the event.Verma’s 49 off 28 balls, combined with a calming 55 off 48 from her opening partner Smriti Mandhana, were the difference as India ran down Australia’s 5 for 173 with two balls to spare. The hosts had appeared well-placed at the innings break after Ashleigh Gardner’s powerful 93 off 57 balls with support from Meg Lanning and Beth Mooney, but a halting last few overs proved costly as India went on the charge from the very first over of their chase. With Verma batting fearlessly and Mandhana providing key support, there was further support from Jemimah Rodrigues, before captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma helped India to their highest successful chase in the format. With two losses in three T20Is, this is the first time the Australians have struggled to this extent since 2017 when they lost four out of five.Gardner builds after first over dramasLate-comers to the Junction Oval missed a dramatic start to the afternoon as Alyssa Healy’s survival of a missed stumping cost India precisely one ball. Deepti’s offbreak lured Healy down the pitch out of what seemed idle curiosity as much as intent to score, and a lack of turn saw the ball pass the bat. But Taniya Bhatia was unable to collect the ball cleanly, allowing Healy to scramble back into her crease and reset – for a moment. The very next delivery was dragged down short, only to be tugged straight to midwicket by Healy as India celebrated their good fortune. Gardner walked out to join Beth Mooney, and there were a few more nervy moments as a few lofted shots landed just out of reach of the fielders. These near-misses soon gave way to cleaner blows as Gardner unfurled her power game in the fashion that has prompted Australia to use her at No. 3. Mooney was content to rotate the strike, and when she perished to a Harleen Deol full-toss, Meg Lanning offered similar support, albeit speckled with a few more boundaries.Haynes, Perry splutter at the finishIndia’s fielding display was far from the standard required, exemplified by the missed stumping to start with and several other clear missed chances besides. Gardner made merry as a result, piling up 11 boundaries and three sixes while adding 62 in 47 balls with Mooney and then a whip-cracking 79 in 42 balls with Lanning. That stand meant that the Australians looked ready to launch at 2 for 141 with 29 balls remaining, but the exits of Lanning for 37 and then Gardner, much to her chagrin, for 93, signalled a loss of acceleration.Ashleigh Gardner plays a cut•Getty Images

Ellyse Perry and Rachael Haynes added 22 together but took 19 balls to do it, even with one mighty six from Perry in the final over bowled by Rajeshwari Gayakwad. They also survived another Indian fielding muck-up, this time a comedy of errors when it appeared easier to run out one of Perry or Haynes than neither. In the end, Perry was lbw when she moved too far across the stumps on the penultimate ball of the innings.Verma’s shots heard round the worldOn what had dried out into a beautiful batting pitch, the tourists had a chance provided they got a swift start. “Swift” proved to be too mild an adjective for the hurricane that was Verma, who took a hyper-aggressive approach from the very first over of the chase and was rewarded with a series of boundaries. The opening overs read like a list of cricket teams and squads: 11, 12, 11, 14 and 14 meaning the powerplay was to be worth 70 and the target drastically reduced.Verma’s fearlessness and sharp eye were complemented perfectly by Mandhana, who found her own occasional boundary in between plenty of singles and alert running between the wickets. Some formidable Australia bowlers – Jess Jonassen, Megan Schutt and Perry – were momentarily humbled by Verma, and captain Lanning was left looking far and wide for bowling options. No fewer than seven bowlers were to be tried, but it was Perry who snared Verma for a breathless 49 from 28 balls to pull Australia back into the contest.Tourists hold nerve for victoryIn Verma’s slipstream, Rodrigues kept scoring at the required tempo with her own sparkling contribution, adding 37 with Mandhana with only a slight dip in the run rate after the opening stand of 85 in 50 balls. When Rodrigues did err, offering a thin edge behind to Healy off Schutt, Harmanpreet provided plenty of experience and poise to the pursuit as Mandhana reached a meritorious half-century.With 16 still required off 12 balls, a tight over from Nicola Carey could have turned the game towards Australia. But although she managed to win an lbw verdict against Mandhana, two fours including one swatted between mid-on and midwicket by Deepti off Carey’s final ball meant only four remained to be collected from the final over. Harmanpreet and Deepti kept their heads for a rousing win. The World Cup race is widening by the day.

Babar Azam and Umaid Asif put the royal seal on Karachi Kings' victory

In the hunt for what would have been just the fourth successful 200-plus chase in PSL history, Darren Sammy and Liam Livingstone nearly got Peshawar Zalmi over the line. But excellent death bowling from Umaid Asif in the final over ensured that Karachi Kings held on for a thrilling 10-run win at the National Stadium on Friday afternoon. The Kings’ victory was set up by a brilliant 97-run partnership between Babar Azam and Imad Wasim. They got together after Cameron Delport fell in the ninth over to a sharply turning googly from Mohammad Mohsin and supercharged the Kings innings. It took an excellent piece of hustle from Tom Banton to run Azam out and break the stand in the 18th over. But by then, the home side had 170 on the board and Iftikhar Ahmed blasted a four and two sixes off the only three balls he faced to put an even more emphatic stamp on proceedings.Babar Azam turns into the leg side•Associated Press

Chris Jordan struck a pair of early blows in the chase, getting Banton lbw on review and yorking Haider Ali three balls later. But Kamran Akmal led a revival with 43 off 26 balls before handing the keys over to Livingstone in the 10th over. Zalmi already needed to score two runs a ball at that stage, but Livingstone and Sammy somehow kept up with the rate. Then, needing 16 to win off the final over, with Sammy on strike, Zalmi’s boundaries dried up as Asif kept the batsmen off balance with an array of slower balls and cutters bowled into the pitch.Turning pointAsif produced a phenomenal effort in the final over, culminating in a sensational return catch to dismiss Sammy. After a pair of singles and a two brought the equation down to 12 off 3 balls, he banged one in short and outside off. The batsman skied an attempted pull over short midwicket. Asif stopped in his follow-through, changed direction, circled back 20 yards to his right, then lunged forward to complete a very difficult catch. On strike for the penultimate ball, needing a pair of sixes to win, Livingstone flubbed a knee-high full toss tamely into the covers for a single to effectively seal victory for the Kings.Star of the dayAzam played a special knock to lead the Kings’ recovery after they had been sent in to bat. He was especially fluent through the off side, finding a majority of his seven fours and two sixes there, including perhaps the shot of the day, a blistering six over extra cover off Hasan Ali in the 15th over. When Wasim started to accelerate alongside him, Azam was happy to rotate the strike and would almost certainly have carried on to reach three-figures if not for Banton’s excellence. The big missBy umpire Richard Illingworth. Banton has been a rampaging menace on the T20 circuit over the last year. But Jordan had him foxed with a clever offcutter two balls into the fourth over which the batsman swung over the top of to be trapped deep in his crease and in front of middle stump. Jordan flew into an appeal and was borderline apoplectic when Illingworth turned it down. Wasim wasted little time in calling for a review and DRS showed the delivery taking out middle stump three quarters of the way up, allowing the decision to be corrected.Where the teams standKings moved level with Quetta Gladiators at the top of the table on two points after two games. Zalmi joined Islamabad United on zero points, alongside Multan Sultans and Lahore Qalandars who are set to play their opening games later on Friday.

Sullivan handed opportunity to sign bargain 12-goal attacker for West Ham

West Ham United and chairman David Sullivan have been told they could sign a "bargain" replacement for Lucas Paqueta, and he may be available for "next to nothing".

Lucas Paqueta exit fears surround West Ham

Supporters reluctantly waved goodbye to former club captain and fan favourite Declan Rice last summer, and if recent reports are to be believed, Paqueta may well follow the England international to pastures new.

Paqueta is attracting interest from Man City, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Tottenham ahead of the summer window, with reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano lifting the lid on an £85 million buy-out clause which becomes active in June.

The 26-year-old has started 20 league matches, scoring two goals and assisting five others, and has been one of West Ham's star players alongside winger Jarrod Bowen.

“Lucas was terrific,” Moyes said on Paqueta. “He drives me mad sometimes but everybody who watched him would have said: ‘This player has got incredible talent’.

West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta.

“There is a word that goes around, a maverick. He is that for us. It is really important we get him in and adapt to him and accept some of his things. He may not do things which are what I would say conventional but we are really enjoying him at the moment and he is terrific at taking the ball under pressure. But also there are moments when I say: ‘What are you doing?’”

Paqueta attracted real interest from Man City last summer, and were attempting to get a deal done, but their move was put on ice following investigations into the South American's alleged gambling breaches.

West Ham have "world-class" Dybala opportunity

He's set to be a hot topic of discussion again this year, and journalist Robin Bairner has claimed in a piece for Football Transfers that West Ham have a "world-class" opportunity to sign Paulo Dybala as a replacement.

Even though they play different positions, Bairner says that Paqueta's level of excitement could be replicated by Dybala, who's scored 12 goals and assisted seven others in 19 league appearances this season.

Roma's Paulo Dybala

Dybala's contract also contains a pretty tantalising £12 million release clause, which Roma are working "hard" to eradicate right now. This sort of fee, as per Bairner, is a potential "bargain" with the World Cup winner also bringing plenty of pedigree to the table.

Pundit Paddy Kenny, speaking to Football Insider on Tottenham's links to Dybala in 2021, called him a would-be "statement" signing.

“But you look at the players Tottenham did sign, two of them from Juventus," said Kenny. “Conte was at Juve as well so if he stays at Tottenham then maybe he can convince Dybala to join. What a statement that would be, by the way, he’s a brilliant player and one Tottenham would love to have.”

Lindsey Horan on the rise, Rose Lavelle on the bench: USWNT's winners and losers from pre-Olympic friendlies

It was a mediocre send-off, but USWNT boss Emma Hayes will have learned plenty as the real games inch closer

With the final whistle on Monday night, playtime officially ended. The time for adjusting or experimenting is now over. The Olympics have effectively arrived, and the U.S. women's national team is marching right on towards them.

Well, maybe not marching. It could be argued that they're limping a bit after two tough games: a cagey 1-0 win over Mexico and a frustrating 0-0 draw with Costa Rica. In an ideal world, these would be games where the USWNT would love to build confidence by running up the score. Not this time.

Instead, new coach Emma Hayes got some good insight and information. She changed things around a little bit while continuing to get this team adjusted to her style of management. Despite the looming tournament, this USWNT is still very much a work in progress. The Hayes era has only just gotten started.

It's clear that there are some kinks to work out, and the question is now this: can they get worked out over the next few weeks? This is still an imperfect, but supremely talented, USWNT group; can it be one that goes for gold?

We'll find out in a few weeks, but these send-off matches showed that there's still so much work to do. There isn't much time left to do it, though. France is calling, and the USWNT will be there soon enough.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from the USWNT's friendlies…

    WINNER: Sophia Smith

She got the only goal of the weekend, so that's enough to put Smith on the winner list.

The attacker's second-half finish against Mexico was fantastic, an example of what she can do with confidence. Against Costa Rica, she had her moments, too, although it felt like the ball was always just a yard away from where she needed it to be.

Her chemistry with her attacking teammates is easy to see, even if the goals are a bit dry for that unit now. Even so, Smith should feel pretty good heading to France with this lone goal in her back pocket as she'll look to bag plenty more at the Olympics this summer.

    LOSER: Rose Lavelle

Tough to see Rose Lavelle sitting out this close to the Olympics. Lavelle was a last-minute pull from the starting XI on Tuesday night, with what the USWNT called "leg tightness."

Lavelle was limited on minutes at the 2023 Women's World Cup, and the midfield missed her creativity and vision. In the USWNT's final friendly before the Paris Olympics, it was clear the midfield was missing Lavelle's involvement once again. With Lavelle, the USWNT have more chances, and, although Korbin Albert got pulled into the action, there were little to no chances to show for it.

The hope is that the leg tightness is managed, and Lavelle will be in good form for the USWNT's first group stage match.

    WINNER: Jaedyn Shaw

In some ways, she's both a winner and a loser here. Shaw didn't play nearly as much as many would have wanted her to, but her absence will only further cries for her to play a big role this summer.

Shaw was a substitute in both matches, with Hayes opting to use her as a bench option for the time being. That could very well change, particularly if the U.S. continues to struggle scoring goals. That's because Shaw, at her core, is a difference-maker, and it's easy to see.

The youngster brings life to this U.S. team whenever she's on the field. She's been doing it since her debut and, even in her cameos this week, you saw flashes of that fact. Will the U.S. use her as a supersub in France? Can they afford to? Ultimately, the answer might be no as this team looks better with Shaw on the field.

    LOSER: Audi Field

As if the humidity wasn't enough to be felt from all over, the field also didn't appear to be doing any favors either.

Although USWNT head coach Emma Hayes said the temperatures were "perfect conditions" ahead of the Olympics, the turf appeared beat up and patchy.

This field is familiar to USWNT star forward Trinity Rodman, who's NWSL team the Washington Spirit play at Audi Field for all home games. The ball carried throughout the game with decent pace, despite the sticky and humid weather. Audi Field first opened its doors in 2018, and we think it's safe to say it doesn't hold 100+ degree weather too well.

Arteta must drop Arsenal’s 9/10 ace and unleash "outstanding" gem

There is no question about it. Arsenal are well and truly back in the Premier League title race this season.

Mikel Arteta's side have finally managed to match their league-leading defence with an attack able to measure up against anyone they face.

However, with Liverpool claiming a last-gasp victory away to Nottingham Forest on Saturday and Manchester City securing a comeback win against Manchester United yesterday, the Gunners' game against Sheffield United has become even more critical.

That said, while it might make sense for Arteta to play his strongest XI against the Blades, he should consider dropping his standout performer from last weekend to give him a rest and to give another star just his third league start of the season.

Jorginho's game vs Newcastle United in numbers

Yes, the player in question is one of Arsenal's most inform players, Jorginho, who has put in some seriously impressive performances this season, notably against Manchester City, Liverpool and Newcastle United last weekend.

The "immense" Italian, as journalist Simon Phillips described him, received a 9/10 for his performances against the Reds and the Magpies from the Standard's Simon Collings, with the journalist claiming that the 32-year-old was the 'star player' last weekend, and that 'he will be vital for Arsenal during the run-in.'

Collings' assessment is a tough one to disagree with through the eye test alone, and it becomes even more so when looking at the former Chelsea ace's statistics from the game last Saturday.

For example, in his 89 minutes of action, he produced 0.29 expected assists, took 109 touches, was accurate in 92 of his 103 passes, played one key pass, won four of his seven duels, made one interception and one tackle.

So, with that said, why shouldn't he start tonight?

Well, there are three reasons. First, his minutes need to be managed as he's only started 12 games all season, and with the second leg of the Porto tie and a must-win match against City on the horizon, it would be silly to risk him.

Second, while there is no such thing as an easy game in the Premier League, Sheffield United are probably the closest thing to one, and so if there were a game to rest the veteran, it would be tonight.

Finally, taking Jorginho out of the lineup will allow Arteta to give another star some much-needed game time and potentially kick start his campaign.

Why Arteta should start Emile Smith Rowe

So, the midfielder who should come into the XI at Brammall Lane is Hale End graduate Emile Smith Rowe.

The young Englishman has been crying out for more minutes this season, and a game against statistically the worst side in the division, while the team is flying high, is arguably the perfect situation to give him.

The 23-year-old has made 16 appearances this season, but only three of those have been starts, and only two of those have come in the Premier League, which simply isn't enough time for a player who has been blighted by injuries over the last few years to get back to his very best.

He has only registered one assist in his 357 minutes of action this year, but he was agonisingly close to scoring the Gunners' fifth against Newcastle last weekend, only for Dan Burn to clear the ball off the line.

Described as an "outstanding" and "quality" player by former professional Paul Robinson, Smith Rowe, if given the opportunity, could well get back to his very best and recreate the sort of form that saw him score 11 goals and provide two assists in just 37 appearances in the 2021/22 season, but he'll only do that with game time.

Arsenal's "special" gem was the next Vieira, but now he's fighting the drop

The talented youngster put in a stellar showing during his first game for the Gunners.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Mar 1, 2024

Ultimately, Arteta once described the Croydon-born gem as a "key player" for Arsenal, and while he isn't that at the moment, a start against the Blades tonight could help him on the journey to get back to being just that while giving Jorginho a rest.

James Anderson ruled out of Ashes, England call up Craig Overton

Senior fast bowler won’t feature against Australia again after suffering recurrence of calf issue

James Anderson has been ruled out of the rest of the Ashes after suffering a recurrence of his calf injury while playing for Lancashire’s 2nd XI in a bid to prove his fitness. England had been hoping to add him to their squad for the Old Trafford Test, but have instead called up Somerset allrounder Craig Overton as bowling cover.Anderson played in the first Test against Australia but only managed to bowl four overs before suffering pain in his calf, having picked up the problem playing for Lancashire. England were heavily beaten at Edgbaston but came back to level the series at 1-1 with two to play after Ben Stokes’ heroics at Headingley.Having featured for Lancashire’s seconds in a three-day friendly against Leicestershire, Anderson stepped up his recovery programme this week, bowling 20 overs on the first day against Durham 2nd XI at Chester Boughton Hall. However, while delivering his ninth over on Thursday, he felt pain in his right calf and was subsequently assessed by England’s medical team. The most-prolific fast bowler in Test history, Anderson has in all likelihood made his final Ashes appearance. He has never hinted at setting a retirement date, but will be 39 by the time England next tour Australia in 2021-22.It is possible he has played his final Test altogether, although the lure of becoming the first fast bowler to 600 wickets might encourage him to push for a return on the winter tours to New Zealand and South Africa. Anderson is currently fourth on the all-time list of Test wicket-takers, with 575.His partnership with Stuart Broad is the most-successful in Tests between two quicks – they have taken more than 850 wickets in games together. In Anderson’s absence, Broad has led the way during the Ashes with 14 wickets at 25.35, although the emergence of Jofra Archer has given England an additional cutting edge. The selectors have otherwise stuck with the same players that helped secure a one-wicket win in Leeds, despite some speculation about the top-order batting after England were bowled out for 67 in the first innings. Overton, who featured twice in the 2017-18 Ashes, is likely to join Sam Curran in vying with Chris Woakes for the No. 8 spot. The Old Trafford Test begins on Wednesday, with England needing to win at least one of the two remaining Tests – and avoid defeat in the other – in order to regain the Ashes.England squad: Joe Root (capt), Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Jack Leach, Craig Overton, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes

8/10 Wolves star was just as good as Cunha & Neto vs West Brom

Wolverhampton Wanderers progressed to the fifth round of the FA Cup after defeating archrivals West Brom 2-0 in the Black Country derby, although not without some traumatic scenes that saw fans in the crowd fighting each other.

It saw the game suspended while police and stewards intervened but thankfully the tie was able to get underway again as Wolves extended their unbeaten run to seven matches.

Molineux Stadium will subsequently be the venue for the fifth-round tie, where they will face a Brighton side who beat Sheffield United 4-2 on Saturday.

The headlines should be all about the Old Gold winning their first game at the Hawthorns in 28 years, but it is sadly difficult to look past the crowd trouble that rather ruined the occasion.

How West Brom v Wolves played out

In truth, the game saw very little quality throughout, with both teams displaying complacency on the ball and a lack of intent to commit players forward.

The first half saw Wolves dominate the ball but rarely threaten in the final third, with the Baggies registering seven attempts. However, the quality of Pedro Neto gave Gary O’Neil’s side the advantage just before the break, springing on the counter from a West Brom corner and scoring with an emphatic finish.

Wolves winger Pedro Neto.

After the interval, it was West Brom’s turn to enjoy the majority of the ball, but they were unable to break down the stubborn Wolves backline. Matheus Cunha then secured the win ten minutes from time, which sparked the issue in the stands.

Matheus Cunha’s game v West Brom by numbers

Wolves’ number 12 put in yet another impressive performance, which continued his run of red-hot form.

The Brazilian has now either scored or assisted in nine of his last 13 matches across all competitions, and his goal earlier on came at the perfect time.

Cunha had the most shots for Wolves, four, and provided their biggest threat all afternoon, stepping up in the absence of Hwang Hee-chan who is at the Asia Cup.

However, the Brazilian's work rate off the ball is what made his performance impressive, as he made three tackles and chased down the opposition continuously, not allowing the baggies to have time on the ball in midfield.

Max Kilman’s stats v West Brom

The Wolves captain put in a huge performance in arguably his side's biggest game of the season.

Max Kilman

Max Kilman was unfazed by the occasion, and he went about his business with class and dominance, just like he usually does.

A last-ditch piece of defending to prevent an easy tap-in from Brandon Thomas-Asante was the highlight of his game, as a goal could have seen the tie switch from a relatively comfortable afternoon to a complete disaster.

The 26-year-old was a rock throughout and was always one step ahead of the game, as displayed by his whopping nine clearances, 4/6 duels won, and four interceptions. He was comfortable on the ball and rarely gave it away unless attempting a long ball, which allowed Wolves to maintain control, particularly in the first half.

Therefore, it was hardly a surprise that he was awarded an 8/10 match rating by Birmingham World's Charlie Haffenden for his performance.

Picking up a rather fortunate assist for Cunha’s goal and claiming a consecutive clean sheet was just the cherry on top for the dynamic defender who bossed the game from the first whistle to the last.
