Bancroft hospitalised after accident as WA mull a replacement for the final

Cameron Bancroft was sent to hospital after a cycling accident left him concussed and ended his Sheffield Shield title dreams, with Western Australia captain Sam Whiteman expressing relief that his opening partner avoided further injuries.Bancroft, a keen cyclist, fell off his bike and landed on his head on Sunday. He was riding by himself when the incident took place and he’s since been ruled out of the final against Tasmania starting on Thursday at the WACA.”[I’m] pretty gutted, but nice to hear he’s okay and out of hospital,” Whiteman told reporters on Wednesday. “I think it’s pretty lucky that it wasn’t much worse. He’s got plenty of scratches. Hopefully we’ll see him around the WACA this week, and I know that he’s gutted to miss it, but he’ll get around the team.”He’s done a lot of heavy lifting this year to get us into the final.”Related

Bancroft’s loss is a huge blow for WA’s bid for a hat-trick of Shield titles after another impressive season where he is the second-highest run-scorer with 778 at 48.62.WA’s batting order is built around the reliable opening partnership of Bancroft and Whiteman, who this season became the state’s most prolific first-wicket pair. But Bancroft’s absence means WA will need to rejig their opening combination with D’Arcy Short and Teague Wyllie in contention to come into the XI, while No.3 Jayden Goodwin could be promoted. The experienced Short has only played one Shield match this season although he did make a gritty 49 batting at No.5 against Queensland on a tough WACA surface earlier this month.Goodwin, the son of former Zimbabwe Test batter Murray Goodwin, has enjoyed a breakout season and stamped himself as WA’s No.3 with a maiden first-class century against Queensland. He also scored 85 in difficult batting conditions at Bellerive Oval against Tasmania last month.WA’s hierarchy may be reluctant to move Goodwin, 22, from the No.3 position with Wyllie firming as the likeliest candidate to replace Bancroft at the top of the order.Teague Wyllie is in-line to replace Cameron Bancroft•Getty Images

But Wyllie, 19, has not played in the Shield since early February after struggling this season with an average of 17.80 from six matches. He started the season with a gutsy 94 off 251 deliveries at No.3 against a full-strength Victorian attack but fell away and was unsuccessfully moved down the order.Wyllie, who played in WA’s two previous title-winning teams, particularly struggled against the seaming ball and was often stuck on the crease. But he’s found form in WA premier cricket with two centuries in his last three innings for Rockingham-Mandurah.Wyllie opens at club level but has never performed the role in first-class cricket. “He’s been an opener his whole career. It’s where he feels most comfortable,” Whiteman said. “He hasn’t had the best season but I love the way he’s been constantly trying to improve himself.”We’ve seen some big innings from him over the last few years. So if he gets his opportunity, I’m sure he can step up.”Tasmania captain Jordan Silk said his team would not underestimate Bancroft’s replacement.”I’m sure whoever they bring in… they’ve got Shield hundreds and I think [WA] will be confident they can replace him,” Silk said. “[Bancroft’s] obviously one of the batters you talk at length about in team meetings, because he’s such a prolific run scorer and he’s hard to remove.”You want the best players playing on this stage, so my thoughts go out to him.”

Katherine Sciver-Brunt ends World Cup career after England's semi-final exit

Veteran seamer turns 38 in July, with an Ashes looming during the home summer

Valkerie Baynes25-Feb-2023Veteran seamer Katherine Sciver-Brunt has confirmed that England’s semi-final exit in Cape Town will be her last World Cup appearance.Sciver-Brunt, who turns 38 in July, has not made any decision on her playing future beyond the current T20 World Cup, where hosts South Africa will take on defending champions Australia in the final on Sunday after a six-run victory over England in their semi-final. England are due to host Australia in the Women’s Ashes this summer.Sciver-Brunt had retired from Test cricket before the multi-format series against South Africa in England last year, which kicked off with a Test at Taunton. The Ashes are also a multi-format event and she could conceivably play in the white-ball series, though she was only part of the T20I squad that toured the Caribbean in the lead-up to this World Cup.Related

“I’ve been thinking about retirement daily for two years,” Sciver-Brunt told the ICC in a press release issued on Saturday. “It used to be after every tour, I’d question what I was doing.”But as it’s drawn closer, I’ve thought about it a bit more seriously and it does creep into your mind when you’re training, mainly because of the pressure other people put on you. You get all those comments and then you start to think, ‘Oh, am I slowing down? Should I stop? Am I embarrassing myself?'”I’ve always said I would like to retire on top, where I’m still wanted, I’m still picked in the first XI, I’m not less than what I used to be. That’s how I’ve felt in the last six months, those things are starting to creep in where I can see somebody taking my role and doing it just as well. This is definitely the last World Cup and beyond this point, I’m fairly close to it all being along the same line, so it won’t be long.”Sciver-Brunt came in for criticism during England’s semi-final defeat for berating younger team-mates for fielding errors. Sciver-Brunt claimed four wickets in five matches at the tournament, at an average of 30.75 and economy rate of 7.53. She leaked 19 runs in the final over of the group match against India, where her figures were 0 for 39 from three overs, and 18 off the final over as South Africa set a target of 165 on Friday, when she took 0 for 33 from four overs. This was Sciver-Brunt’s sixth T20 World Cup and 11th overall, having first played in the 2005 ODI event. She made her international debut in a Test against New Zealand at Scarborough in 2004 and her white-ball debut in an ODI during England’s tour of South Africa the following year. She took 3 for 6 in the 2009 T20 World Cup final, the year England claimed the ODI and T20 titles as well as the Ashes. In 2017, she was part of the side that reclaimed the 50-over World Cup at Lord’s.Katherine and Natalie played this World Cup wearing their married name•ICC via Getty ImagesShe and her wife Nat, the tournament’s leading run-scorer so far, appeared at the event wearing their married name emblazoned across their shirts.”Looking back on my career, I’d like to think I was Mrs. Consistent,” she said. “I’d like to be remembered as someone who was always at the top of my game and always contributing for my country, helping us in a winning cause and giving everything I had.”The good thing is Nat can carry on my name, the legacy of Brunt will carry on, which is great. Having my name associated with hers is also great because she’s a bit of a legend in her own right now.”Katherine told Sky Sports earlier this month that she planned to retire from cricket if England won the T20 World Cup but she would consider contesting the Ashes if they didn’t. And she has indicated that she is still coming to terms with the idea of not playing alongside Nat in England colours when that time does come.”A lot of people say, ‘how does she put up with you?’ She has patience in abundance and empathy and she understands me and loves me for who I am,” Katherine said. “We just work really well together and complement each other, and there is never a day where we want to be apart.”Coming into my retirement, she will be gone, but hopefully the ECB will take me along. I’ll be slinging in the nets to all of them.”

'Stigma has become less and less' – Alexi Lalas says MLS is now a proper destination for American players after Colorado Rapids sign Paxten Aaronson

Lalas says league has evolved, pushed back against the notion that continuing a career in MLS represents a bailout

Lalas says stigma of Americans in MLS has diminishedSays players now return for competitive salariesMLS functioning as both a buying and selling leagueGetty Images SportWHAT HAPPENED

Addressing the perception of American players returning to Major League Soccer, former MLS star Alex Lalas noted the financial evolution of the league, and says the appeal is now competitive salaries more than just a soft career landing spot.

The Colorado Rapids signed Paxten Aaronson away from Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt. Paxten Aaronson – brother of Leeds United midfielder Brenden –  was one of the finalists for the Eredivisie's Young Player of the Year award after recording an eight-goal, four-assist season while on loan with Utretch.

“We could talk for hours about what the perception is and what the reality is when it comes to Major League Soccer,” Lalas said on his State of the Union podcast. “The stigma of players coming back – in this case, someone like Paxten Aaronson, who's kind of going into the prime of his career – the stigma has become less and less.

"I'm not saying it's, it's gone away by any stretch of the imagination. I'm sure there's plenty of people out there that immediately will see a player in a different light.

Lalas said that different career paths work for different players, pushing back against the notion that continuing a career in MLS represents a bailout.

“My point about that is you are letting your insecurity relative to Major League Soccer infect your brain and color everything that happens,” Lalas added. “There's no one way to go about it… it's a back and forth without the tail between the legs, or at least not being as prominent. It has been in the past and money actually associated and big money… That market opening up, that's a good thing.

“It's a good thing for Major League Soccer because that's ultimately what you want. You want to be a buying and selling market, whether that is international talent, or whether that is American talent that looks back or for the first time looks to MLS as a as a vital thing.”

AdvertisementWHAT LALAS SAID

Lalas also addressed LA Galaxy's approach to the Leagues Cup, given their struggles during the regular MLS season. He pointed out that reaching the top three positions in the tournament would secure qualification for the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

“LA Galaxy sitting in last place having a horrible MLS season, but they find themselves with this kind of redeemable moment in in League's Cup," he said. "And keep in mind that the top three teams, regardless if it's MLS or League MX, qualify for CONCACAF Champions League Champions Cup, right?

“But obviously Orlando, Inter Miami and Seattle are upper-echelon types of teams as opposed to in this moment, the LA Galaxy. And they have put all of their eggs into this Leagues Cup basket, as well they should."

He expressed support for Galaxy's decision to prioritize tournament success given their position in the MLS standings.

“Remember years ago when DC United, I think it was, was having a horrible MLS season and they just lit it up," he said. "And sometimes you can redeem your season by having these moments that, then in this case, the carrot is you qualify. And I guarantee you that the LA Galaxy is going to look very, very different come next year. Players in, players out, players that are hurt coming back."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The five-time MLS Cup champions have fallen from their perennial contender status this season and currently sit at the bottom of the Western Conference with 16 points from 26 games.

Bartlett and Keogh give Northants control at Derby

Fifth-wicket stand of 124 ensures platform provided by openers does not go to waste

ECB Reporters Network17-May-2024George Bartlett and Rob Keogh led a solid Northamptonshire batting display on the opening day of the Vitality County Championship Division Two match against Derbyshire at Derby. The pair both scored half-centuries and added 124 for the fifth wicket to get the innings back on track after Anuj Dal struck twice to reduce Northants to 121 for 4. Ricardo Vasconcelos and Emilio Gay shared an opening stand of 99 but it was Bartlett’s 76 and Keogh’s unbeaten 75 that gave Northants the advantage, closing on 297 for 5.Ross Whiteley claimed his first Championship victim for nearly three years but Blair Tickner was the pick of the attack and deserved more than one wicket from 21 overs.Derbyshire began the day by naming allrounder Whiteley in the team for his first Championship match since he played for Worcestershire in June 2021.Whiteley spent the morning in the field after Northants decided to bat in sunny conditions although both openers needed some good fortune to survive on a pitch offering assistance to the seamers.South African fast bowler Daryn Dupavillon knocked Vasconcelos off his feet with a yorker first ball of the match although it was Tickner who posed the biggest threat. The New Zealander went past the bat numerous times in an outstanding six-over opening spell that included four maidens and cost only three runs. But the pressure eased once he was out of the attack with the other bowlers unable to maintain the same consistent line. When Tickner was brought back on, Vasconcelos pulled him for four to reach his 50 from 89 balls but just when it was looking like a fruitless session for the home side, he moved one back in to have him lbw.Northants would still have been satisfied with their position at lunch but the picture quickly changed after Gay was dismissed by the first ball of the afternoon session. It was an innocuous delivery from Dal but Gay played it into his stumps as he aimed to push it to the offside and Dal struck again in his next over. Luke Proctor had never looked comfortable and after facing 17 balls without scoring, he went across to glance and lost his leg stump. There was an even bigger success for Derbyshire when Zak Chappell got one to straighten to bowl Karun Nair for 6 to leave Northants in danger of failing to build on the foundations laid by the openers.Another wicket would have opened the door for Derbyshire but Bartlett and Keogh regrouped and batted through the rest of the session. Bartlett reached his 50 from 72 balls when he cover drove David Lloyd for his ninth four and by tea the pair had added 74 to shift the initiative back to the visitors.Whiteley was brought into the attack after the interval and after Keogh guided him past gully for four to go to 50 from 103 balls, he broke the stand in his next over. Bartlett was surprised by a ball that lifted from just outside off stump and could only fend it to slip where Aneurin Donald took a simple catch. It was an important breakthrough ahead of the second new ball which Derbyshire took immediately but Keogh and Justin Broad denied them any further success.

India and SA bank on franchise T20s for World Cup selection

Both Suryakumar and Markram said performances in the IPL and SA20 will be noted

Deivarayan Muthu09-Dec-20233:29

Suryakumar: ‘There’s no fear of failure in the new-age Indian T20 batters’

India have just six T20Is left to identify their best XI before next year’s World Cup in the West Indies and USA, but Suryakumar Yadav, who is their captain for the three-match series in South Africa, isn’t too perturbed by the limited game time. Suryakumar added that IPL 2024, which will precede the T20 World Cup, will help India’s team management nail down their combination.”I feel there are limited T20s going forward, before the T20 World Cup, but then we play 14 league games in the IPL as well,” Suryakumar said on the eve of the series opener against South Africa in Durban. “And players who have been playing in these T20 internationals… they’ve played a lot of games, and they have a lot of experience under their belt. So, we don’t think there will be an issue or any problem in selecting the squad because everyone knows their roles really well and responsibilities really well – [like] how to play in different situations.”Like India, South Africa have only six T20Is lined up before the 2024 World Cup. In addition to having the advantage of playing three T20Is in the Caribbean in the lead-up to the marquee tournament, South Africa could pick players from the SA20, which will run from January 10 to February 10.Related

South Africa grapple with the changing world of T20 cricket

Ngidi ruled out of India T20Is with ankle sprain, also doubtful for Tests

“It’s a strange one,” their captain Aiden Markram said. “Not ideal that we have only six games [before the T20 World Cup] but we’re fortunate that there’s still a lot of T20 cricket, in terms of SA20 and the domestic T20 competition just after that. Hopefully, everyone can be fit and ready to go for us when it comes down to selecting the World Cup squad, which we will keep all our fingers crossed for. But guys will be playing T20 cricket and ultimately we will be able to get a good gauge of what our best squad is that we can send out for the World Cup.”For India, the spotlight is on their new finishers Rinku Singh and Jitesh Sharma. Both batters have lit up the IPL with their middle-order firepower and showed glimpses of that firepower in the recent T20Is at home against Australia. This tour presents an opportunity to strengthen their cases for selection for the T20 World Cup.”See, the number Rinku and Jitesh have been batting at, at the IPL and for their state teams, is the same number they are being given an opportunity here,” Suryakumar said, “And they are being told to do the same thing they do for their states and their franchises; [it’s] nothing different. That’s what they have done too; whenever we were in trouble in the T20 series [against Australia], they showed a lot of character, which was the demanded of the team. All I told them was that whatever you think, just think of the team first and then about your personal milestones. That will make the situation better.”Another area of potential concern for India is the absence of a reliable sixth-bowling option with Hardik Pandya out injured. India didn’t use the part-time spin of Yashasvi Jaiswal or Tilak Varma in the T20I series at home against Australia, but Suryakumar was pleased with the options at his disposal. Tilak bowled in five of the seven matches he had played for Hyderabad in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, India’s domestic T20 tournament.”We do have a sixth-bowling option,” Suryakumar said. “There are lots of people to bowl. When the time is right, you will see. Not just six, there could be seven or eight too.”None of the men in India’s current squad have played a T20I in South Africa, but Suryakumar backed them to adapt to the conditions. At Kingsmead, the venue for the first T20I, the square boundaries are fairly short, and the pitches are more conductive to seam bowlers than spinners.”I think the key to success playing on such wickets will be to be yourself,” Suryakumar said. “The boys are really prepared – we’ve just come out of a nice T20 series, and we played on all fast tracks in India and we’re really equipped for it. Regarding the strokes, the batters have batted on these kinds of wickets and I’m sure they will enjoy playing here in South Africa.”

Tammy Beaumont century leads England fightback as runs flow in Ashes Test

Sutherland hundred sets up Australia but Ecclestone, Knight, Sciver-Brunt keep hosts in hunt

Valkerie Baynes23-Jun-2023Tammy Beaumont’s unbeaten century put England back in contention after Annabel Sutherland’s own hundred had put Australia on top in the Women’s Ashes Test at Trent Bridge. It had looked as though Sutherland would own the day with her unbeaten 137, the highest score by a batter at No. 8 or lower in a Women’s Test, having reached the fastest Test hundred by an Australian woman, off 148 balls. Australia’s 473 was the highest first innings in a women’s Test and came despite Sophie Ecclestone’s maiden Test five-wicket haul, a herculean effort which ended in her 47th over when she removed last wicket Darcie Brown.Sutherland also made an early breakthrough as Australia’s first-change bowler, after their new-ball pairing of Brown and Kim Garth had largely struggled for length and rhythm, an uncharacteristic rash of full tosses doing nothing to dent England’s efforts to overhaul their opponents.Beaumont, off the back of an unbeaten double-hundred in last week’s warm-up match, kept the hosts in the hunt with her 100 not out as she became just the second Englishwoman behind captain Heather Knight to score a century in all three formats. That she got there sprinting for a second run after clipping Sutherland towards square leg after spending a day and a half in the field only added to the magic of her innings. Knight contributed 57 to the cause as the pair put on 115 runs for the second wicket and Nat Sciver-Brunt cruised to a brisk 41 not out. While Brown and Garth were struggling to nail their lengths early, Beaumont edged Brown towards second slip where Phoebe Litchfield appeared to get a fingertip to a difficult chance, but otherwise accumulated nicely, punishing any bad balls to the boundary.Sutherland entered the attack in the 10th over and struck with her sixth ball, enticing a drive from Emma Lamb with a fuller ball on off stump which sailed to Jess Jonassen, who swallowed the catch low at second slip. She bowled 13 dot-balls before conceding any runs, Beaumont dispatching a full toss to the boundary through mid-on.Annabel Sutherland acknowledges the applause for her maiden Test hundred•Getty ImagesBeaumont moved to her third Test fifty by pulling an Alana King delivery to the fence beyond deep midwicket and, two balls later, she swept her fine for another boundary, her 11th of the innings. Beaumont enjoyed a stroke of luck on 61 when umpire Anna Harris turned down Australia’s hearty appeal for a catch by Litchfield at short leg and the tourists declined to review, with replays showing Beaumont had struck King’s fuller ball onto her boot before it looped directly to Litchfield. Later, on 88, she just managed to evade Jonassen’s dive at slip.Knight unleashed a reverse-sweep for four against Ashleigh Gardner, brought on at the start of the last hour as Australia searched for a wicket, and she pierced the slips with a boundary off Garth to bring up her fourth Test fifty. Gardner finally lifted Australia when she removed Knight by enticing an edge with a fuller, slower delivery and wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy did the rest.Earlier, Sutherland and King added 34 runs to Australia’s overnight 328 for 7 and extended their union to 47 before a Lauren Bell inswinger crashed into the top of King’s off stump. Ecclestone had earlier thought she had King out lbw with her third ball of the day but she survived on umpire’s call when England reviewed, with Hawk-Eye showing that the ball was just clipping leg stump.Sutherland expertly marshalled a 95-run partnership with Garth, the former Ireland international making her Test debut for Australia. She brought up Australia’s 400 and moved into the 90s with a punch to the boundary through extra cover off Ecclestone and, next over, she raised her century with a four through deep midwicket off Lauren Filer.Sutherland had entered the game off the back of a century in Australia’s three-day warm-up against England A and here she played with great tempo and poise, the only half-chance she offered came shortly after reaching her ton when she edged a Filer short ball outside off stump, which flew just beyond the grasp of a leaping Knight in the slips.Related

Australia’s ability to build partnerships was key to their innings with Sutherland also putting on 77 runs for the seventh wicket with Gardner, while Ellyse Perry, who fell on 99, shared a 119-run stand with Tahlia McGrath after adding 48 with Beth Mooney. After Bell’s initial breakthrough, England were frustrated. Down a seam-bowling option with Sciver-Brunt bowling just five overs the previous day because of an apparent knee complaint, debutant Filer couldn’t add to her two wickets of the previous day. It fell to Ecclestone, back into the action after bowling a mammoth 28 overs on the trot on Thursday, to eventually take the remaining wickets. When she beat the inside edge and rapped Garth on the back pad in her 45th over, there was no free-wheeling round the outfield. Instead she slumped, hands on knees as her team-mates ran to pat her on the back. Sutherland dispatched Ecclestone over deep midwicket for six but Ecclestone was able to muster enough sprightliness to snaffle a return catch off Brown to close out the innings and end her heroic toil with an exclamation mark.
