Arsenal Transfer Roundup: Interest in Ligue 1 ace, Emery wants Zaha, £4m-a-year for Tierney

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal are continuing to look at potential transfer targets as they prepare their squad for the next campaign. Today’s Gunners transfer roundup includes interest in a Ligue 1 midfielder, Unai Emery’s desire to bring in a Premier League ace and a contract offer for a Scottish international.

Bourigeaud interest

According to Estadio Deportivo, Arsenal are interested in bringing Benjamin Bourigeaud to the Emirates Stadium this summer. The 25-year-old Rennes midfielder is attracting a lot of interest from around Europe, including from Manchester United and Liverpool.

Emery wants Zaha

Unai Emery is desperate to sign Wilfried Zaha this summer and will ask the Arsenal board to break the bank to do so according to the Sun. The Gunners have a transfer budget of £45m and the Ivory Coast international would be expected to cost £55m.

Arsenal to make big offer to Tierney

Arsenal are willing to offer Celtic’s Kieran Tierney a huge £4m-a-year contract if they can sign him this summer according to the Scottish Sun. Arsenal have so far made two bids for the left-back, but they both fall short of Celtic’s £25m valuation.

Newcastle fans react as report hints at mass player exodus

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Newcastle fans have been reacting to a report from The Sun, which claims five first-team stars could leave in the wake of Rafael Benitez’s departure.

For all the talk of possible signings, a takeover bid and a manager dispute, everyone seems to have forgotten that there’s nothing Mike Ashley loves more than selling his players on for a profit.

And, according to The Sun, four other first-team regulars could join Isaac Hayden on the exit list, who has been yearning for a move for some time now due to personal reasons, per Chronicle Live.

This new report claims Ayoze Perez, Fabian Schar, Martin Dubravka and Federico Fernandez are now all open to leaving the club.

2-0 down? No worries. Newcastle fans show why they’re some of the best in the country in the video below…

Schar, Dubravka and Perez in particular will be viewed as huge sources of profit if the club do decide to sell, as the trio were bought for just £3m, £3.6m and £1.8m respectively.

Loads of fans have been weighing in on the report, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Gabriel Martinelli can take inspiration from Matteo Guendouzi

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

As confirmed by the club’s official website, Gabriel Martinelli has become Arsenal’s first signing of the summer after arriving from Brazilian side Ituano.

What’s the word?

The 18-year-old is said to have signed a long-term contract at the Emirates and arrived after a real breakthrough couple of years at his former side.

The forward, who is capable of playing both up front and out wide, scored ten times in 34 appearances across all competitions after making his debut back in 2017.

Are Man City better than Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’? Fans discuss in the video below…

Despite his tender age, Martinelli could perhaps take inspiration from one of his new teammates in making a statement far earlier than many may have predicted.

The year of Matteo Guendouzi

When Arsenal’s floppy-haired Frenchman arrived last summer from Lorient, nobody could have expected him to become a mainstay in the first-team. Guendouzi signed from a side in France’s second division and many felt this was a signing for the future and that he would be sent out on loan or feature predominantly for the academy sides.

Instead, the 20-year-old hit the ground running and was impressive in pre-season for the Gunners, enjoying a particularly outstanding game against PSG. Unai Emery saw this, and subsequently handed him the full 90 minutes against Manchester City and Chelsea in the side’s opening two Premier League games of the season.

At 18, Martinelli is in a similar boat to his new teammate. Both have very little professional football to their name, but like Guendouzi, there appears to be a competitive streak and a willingness to learn. Indeed, in an interview after his signing, the teenager himself admitted that he took inspiration from one man in particular.

He said: “I model my game on Cristiano Ronaldo, he is a player who works hard, pushing himself to the next level. Always in the run for titles and individual trophies. I am a player who gives his all at all times, I play as a team and always looking to win games and win trophies.”

The one big takeaway from Emery’s first season in charge at Arsenal was his intensity in wanting his side to work hard. It was one of the main reasons behind Mesut Ozil often being side-lined. So if Martinelli can follow in Guendouzi’s footsteps over the coming weeks, showing the manager he will fight for every last inch no matter his inexperience, he can enjoy the same kind of success the Frenchman had last year.

Ralph Hasenhuttl boosted as Sam Gallagher to leave Southampton this weekend

[ad_pod ]The Telegraph journalist Sam Wallace has said on his official Twitter account that Southampton striker Sam Gallagher should complete a £5m move to Blackburn Rovers this weekend, and it is good news for manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the 23-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from St Mary’s this summer, with Wallace actually reporting in a separate article last month that he was expected to leave the club during the current window.

Now it appears as though that will happen by the end of the weekend, with an exit to the Championship side on the cards for the player deemed surplus to requirements.

Gallagher clearly failed to convince the Austrian that he had a future with the south coast outfit, having only played 215 minutes of football under him since he was appointed as Mark Hughes’ successor in December.

Good news for Hasenhuttl

There is a lot of deadwood that the 51-year-old wants to get rid of this summer – The Telegraph reported last month that the club is open to offers for Cedric Soares, Wesley Hoedt, Guido Carrillo and Sofiane Boufal, and they are ready to let one of Alex McCarthy or Fraser Forster leave as they look to ‘generate further funds and flexibility within their wage structure’.

Southampton’s new man Moussa Djenepo divides opinion amongst fans in the video below…

In addition, Mario Lemina, Charlie Austin and Gallagher were all left out of the 26-man squad for the pre-season trip to Austria this week.

The Telegraph also said last month that the south coast outfit still want to bring in a new centre-back and wing-back to St Mary’s ahead of the Premier League campaign, but it appears as though they need to cull their squad before that can happen.

Removing Gallagher and his wages will only be another step towards that, and the Austrian may well be able to put that fee towards strengthening either of the aforementioned positions with just a month until the transfer window closes – good news, indeed.

Liverpool’s Joel Matip can fend off competition to be van Dijk’s centre-back partner

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

What a turnaround a few months can make. Having started the season well behind in the pecking order at Liverpool, Joel Matip more than proved his worth as the Reds marched their way to a sixth Champions League title.

The Cameroon international had played just a total of 276 minutes of Premier League football by the middle of January, but injuries to his teammates allowed him to step in and the defender never truly looked back.

Despite figuring prominently in the second-half of the campaign, the return to fitness of both Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren should provide added competition for Matip next season; but according to the centre-back himself, he is confident of keeping his place.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Matip said: “It was nice to play and have the success, but a new season begins. You start new and last season doesn’t matter. You only have to take the things, learn the things from last year, but we all start from new. We have a lot of good players. I try to play as much as possible, but we will see.”

The 6 foot 5 star’s performances drew glowing praise from Jurgen Klopp and after impressing in the Champions League win over Bayern Munich, his German boss labelled him as an “outstanding player” and said that it was “unbelievable how he is doing”.

For Liverpool, just as is the case in positions further forward, it’s about getting the best out of your star man. And in the Reds’ case, Virgil van Dijk is undoubtedly the leader of the backline, meaning the choice of his centre-back partner should perhaps revolve around who allows him to play the best, rather than being the best defender for the job themselves.

Matip’s proven partnership with the Dutchman and seeing the duo deliver starring performances on their way to winning the biggest title in club football should surely warrant the Cameroonian the title of being van Dijk’s fellow centre-back in command.

Indeed, the 27-year-old’s averages of 1.8 tackles, 1.5 interceptions and 3.5 clearances comfortably beats the numbers of both Gomez and Lovren, with only the Croatian managing to come out on top in the clearances category.

So combined with his defensive stats and ability to forge a formidable partnership with the PFA Player of the Year, Klopp must once again turn to Matip as van Dijk’s centre-back partner for the future.

Rangers fans react to impressive win for development squad

[ad_pod ]

A Rangers development side triumphed 2-0 over Cambridge United on Tuesday and the fans are buzzing.

Goals from youngsters Andrew Dallas and Jamie Barjonas gave Graeme Murty’s men the win. The victory was made more impressive by the fact that the English League Two outfit put out a strong side in preparation for their season kicking off at the start of August.

The game was played at Rangers’ training complex, meaning the fans missed out on an intriguing side that featured more than just youngsters. Jamie Murphy stepped up his recovery from an ACL injury and played 78 minutes.

On top of Murphy, Glenn Middleton featured amidst speculation that he could be departing the club on loan. The winger had been linked with a switch to Doncaster Rovers but that deal has fallen through.

Finally, the Rangers bench featured three trialists as Murty and Steven Gerrard looked to assess their options going into the 2019/20 season.

These Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to highlight their pride in the youngsters after an impressive win.

West Ham fans have mixed views on Arthur Masuaku’s contract extension

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United announced on Monday that Arthur Masuaku had signed a contract extension with the Premier League club.

Indeed, the 25-year-old has put pen to paper on a deal until the end of the 2023-24 campaign, whilst the agreement includes an option for another two years.

Masuaku has not had much of a pre-season due to the fact that he represented DR Congo at the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this summer.

The left-back did feature against Fulham at the weekend, though, and will be looking to continue to build his fitness against Hertha Berlin and Athletic Bilbao.

Masuaku made 27 appearances for Manuel Pellegrini’s side during the 2018-19 campaign.

The news, though, has brought a mixed reaction from the club’s supporters.

Indeed, whilst some are happy with the contract announcement, others have been left disappointed as they simply do not rate the 5 foot 10 ace, who has drawn criticism from the London Stadium faithful in the past.

Ex-Arsenal icon Ian Wright showers Nicolas Pepe with praise in latest Instagram snap

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal have broken their transfer record with the latest acquisition of Nicolas Pepe, with the 24-year-old Ivory Coast international completing the paperwork on his move on Thursday.

Pepe, who netted 22 times in Ligue 1 last season, joins the squad for a reported fee of £72m, if BBC Sport are to be believed.

Among other things, Wright mentions Pepe’s strengths and calls him a “world-class” player.

And it everything goes well, we won’t have to wait long until the 24-year-old’s maiden performance for Arsenal.

The Gunners will play Barcelona on 4 August and maybe we’ll see Pepe in action at the Camp Nou.

What a debut that would be.

Spurs midfielder Christian Eriksen a target for Manchester United

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Manchester United are working on a deal to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen, per the London Evening Standard.

What’s the word?

The Denmark international outlined his intention to take on a new challenge at the end of the 2018/19 season, opening the door to a potential transfer away from north London.

United are said to acknowledge the difficulty of signing Eriksen prior to the transfer deadline on Thursday but the Standard reports that the club have made their interest known to Spurs.

Indeed, the attacking midfielder is said to have been identified as a potential replacement for Paul Pogba, whose future remains up in the air.

The Standard claims that Spurs had previously valued the 27-year-old at £130m but United are hopeful of negotiating that fee down.

[ad_pod ]

Cannot sell

It is fine for Spurs to sell Eriksen this summer.

He has expressed his desire to move and, if the fee is right, it could potentially be reinvested into one of either Giovani Lo Celso or Bruno Fernandes of Real Betis and Sporting Lisbon respectively.

However, it is not palatable to strengthen a direct rival practically on the eve of the 2019/20 season.

Spurs finished five points clear of United last season; they have finished ahead of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men in three of the last four campaigns.

Selling them a player who would undoubtedly improve them – Eriksen provided more assists in the Premier League in 18/19 than any United player – would be madness, particularly at such a late stage of the transfer window with no guarantee of buying a replacement.

This is not a deal Spurs should be entertaining even for a second.

West Ham fans react to update on Manuel Lanzini’s contract situation

[ad_pod ]

Some West Ham fans have taken to Twitter to react to the news that the club hope to have a breakthrough in Manuel Lanzini’s contract negotiations within the next two weeks.

The Argentina international has less than 12 months remaining on his current deal, which sees him earns a wage of £35k-a-week, and the Hammers are hoping to find a breakthrough in negotiations with the attacking midfielder in the next fortnight.

The Irons have a two-year extension option with Lanzini, but want to tie the 26-year-old down to a deal for the forseeable future.

West Ham’s No.10 reportedly wants to see his weekly wages at least doubled if he is to sign a new long-term contract.

You can teach yourself 3 crazy football skills in the video below…

The east Londoners had planned to tie Lanzini down to a new five-year deal last summer before the attacker suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament in the build up to the World Cup, but the club are now hoping to resurrect contract talks and are hopeful of a breakthrough.

Let’s see how some of the Hammers supporters on Twitter reacted to the news…
