Newcastle make January move in race for teenage gem who may replace Wilson

With the January transfer window now open and the chance for Paul Mitchell to earn redemption from the Magpies’ summer disappointment now underway, Newcastle United have already reportedly made their first move.

Newcastle transfer news

Those at St James’ Park endured a frustrating summer transfer window in Mitchell’s first few months in charge, with the sporting director unable to get deals over the line for the likes of Marc Guehi and Anthony Elanga. A slow start to the season then followed for Eddie Howe’s side, before returning players handed the former Bournemouth boss a much-needed boost to culminate in a run of five straight victories in all competitions.

That collective run combined with Alexander Isak’s recent form has not stood in the way of the transfer rumours arriving, particularly around the Swede and a potential move to Arsenal this year in what would be a major blow.

He’s not the only one who could be heading for the door, however, with Callum Wilson yet to sign a new deal and currently on course to become a free agent at the end of the season. Alas, if the experienced striker does depart, then it seems as though the Magpies already have a plan in place.

According to The Scottish Sun, Newcastle have made an official approach to sign Evan Mooney from St. Mirren, but are yet to submit their first offer in the race for his signature alongside Arsenal.

Newcastle now want to sign "truly magnificent" £55k-a-week attacking gem

His club are now ready to sell.

ByHenry Jackson Dec 31, 2024

Just 17 years old, Mooney is undoubtedly one for the future and a striker who would instantly learn from the likes of Isak if asked to take up Wilson’s role as deputy in that department.

Mooney is one for the future

Swapping the old for the new by potentially welcoming Mooney in preparation for Wilson’s exit, Newcastle would be planning ahead in an intelligent move. The teenager has impressed many in Scotland to earn four appearances for St. Mirren’s senior side in the Scottish Premiership, scoring once and assisting once in an excellent spell.

A player who can play on the right-hand side as well as in the leading role, Mooney’s arrival would kill two birds with one stone at St James’ Park for years to come, deputising for Isak and replacing Miguel Almiron.

It won’t be a simple race for the youngster’s signature with Arsenal interested, however. The Magpies must put together a strong pitch to lure Mooney away from the Gunners and towards Newcastle.

Given that Wilson is on his way out, they can at least offer an instant path into the first-team to gain crucial minutes from the off. Arsenal, meanwhile, may not be able to offer such a role in their side.

Everton eye "creative" Newcastle academy graduate as Moyes’ first signing

Everton are keen to sign a “creative” Newcastle United player who recently spoke his desire to be “valued and appreciated,” according to a new report.

Everton news and updates

David Moyes will begin his second stint as Everton manager on Wednesday night when the Toffees host Aston Villa at Goodison Park in the Premier League. Moyes, who previously managed Everton between 2002 and 2013 before joining Manchester United, was appointed as the club’s new manager last week following the dismissal of Sean Dyche.

Everton had won just three of their 19 top flight games under Dyche – form which leaves them hovering precariously above the drop zone in 16th.

“It’s great to be back! I enjoyed 11 wonderful and successful years at Everton and didn’t hesitate when I was offered the opportunity to rejoin this great club,” Moyes said, adding that he’s “excited to be working with The Friedkin Group,” who completed a £400 million takeover of Everton last month.

“Now we need Goodison and all Evertonians to play their part in getting behind the players in this important season so we can move into our fabulous new stadium as a Premier League team,” added the Scotsman.

Executive Chairman Marc Watts said: “We are pleased that David is joining us at this pivotal time in Everton’s history. With over a decade of experience at the club, he is the right leader to propel us through our final season at Goodison Park and into our new stadium.”

Everton want Longstaff as Moyes' first signing

If Moyes is to keep Everton up, he will no doubt be looking to add reinforcements to his squad in January. According to Chronicle Live, one of those reinforcements could come in the form of Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff, who they claim is a target for the Merseyside club this month.

Newcastle could axe their big scapegoat by signing "exceptional" £37m ace

Longstaff has been in and out of Eddie Howe’s team this season, starting eight of their 20 Premier League games so far. Previously hailed by Howe as “creative” with a “really nice way of linking play”, the 27-year-old is contracted at St. James’ Park until 2026.

In an interview with The i back in November, he hinted at being frustrated with the perception of his role in Howe’s team, saying that he wants to be “valued and appreciated.”

“Ultimately a lot of people don’t recognise how we play, what the patterns are, what my role in the team is,” he said. “I don’t flick the ball over someone’s head like Bruno [Guimaraes] does, that’s what catches the eye but there’s lots of ways to win a football match. My job is to make them flourish as best as they can and get in the box and score goals when I can.”

Liverpool now battling to beat Jurgen Klopp in race to sign "powerful" gem

Still looking to commence their January business, Liverpool are now reportedly battling against former manager Jurgen Klopp to sign a future star who is attracting plenty of interest.

Liverpool transfer news

Having opted not to splash the cash in the summer transfer window upon Arne Slot’s arrival, some may have expected the Reds to hand the Dutchman one or two reinforcements this month, but so far that has not been the case. Top of the Premier League and top of the Champions League – and both very convincingly so – those at Anfield have so far decided that Slot’s squad good enough as it is.

Instead, Liverpool have been forced to think about potential departures this month. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are still yet to put pen to paper on new deals and that has only sparked exit rumours, particularly in the case of Alexander-Arnold. With Real Madrid’s interest no secret these days, the right-back has seen his name linked to the Bernabeu since the beginning of the month.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

That’s not to say no rumours over potential incomings have arrived, however. According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Liverpool are now battling Klopp to sign Ryan One from Sheffield United. The 18-year-old has impressed for the Blades and earned interest from Anfield, Brighton & Hove Albion and Red Bull clubs RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg as a result.

Whether the Reds make their move as early as this month remains to be seen, but seeing Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes square off against Klopp in the transfer market would certainly be an interesting scenario a year on from when the German announced he would leave at the end of the last campaign. That said, One could be a player to watch in the final days of the winter window.

"Powerful" One is a rising star

At just 18 years old, One is already making an impact for Sheffield United’s senior side under Chris Wilder, scoring once in two starts and 10 appearances in the Championship. As things stand, the only way is up for the young forward who may yet have the biggest decision of his career so far to make in the coming weeks or months.

The striker role is certainly one that is up for grabs at Liverpool, even for a player as young as One. With Darwin Nunez yet to convince, Diogo Jota proving unreliable thanks to his injury record and Luis Diaz merely a square peg in a round hole, any forward who is good enough should be considered ready enough to lead the line at Anfield.

One has unsurprisingly found himself at the centre of praise in recent months, including from Scottish football experts Scotball, who described the young Scotland forward as “powerful” at the start of the month.

A player to watch, One could find himself playing Premier League football with or without Sheffield United by the time that next season arrives.

Amorim must drop Ugarte & unleash Man Utd ace who has "energy in abundance"

What a fantastic start Manchester United have had to 2025. The Red Devils are yet to lose, with Ruben Amorim’s side getting a huge 2-2 draw away to Liverpool in their first game of the new calendar year.

Next up for the 2023/24 FA Cup winners was the first defence of their crown away to Arsenal, a tough task in North London. However, the Red Devils won on penalties despite playing with ten men for an hour or so.

Most recently came a 3-1 win at Old Trafford against Southampton. Despite being 1-0 down with 81 minutes on the clock, Amad scored a hat-trick in 12 minutes to secure all three points for the home side.

Amorim has rotated his side well so far, and the next player who could be the victim of that is Manuel Ugarte, despite his brilliant performances in the past few months.

Ugarte’s recent performances

To clarify, a situation where Ugarte gets dropped from the starting 11 would not be a reflection of his recent performances. He has been superb in recent weeks, described as a “big game player” by football statistician Statman Dave.

The defensive midfielder is not one to shy away from any challenges, and his stats on FBref from the Premier League highlight his ball-winning ability. He currently averages six tackles and interceptions per game in the top flight this term, ranking him in the top 2% of Premier League midfielders for that metric.

However, against Southampton, the United number 25 struggled. He looked tired and played just over half of the game before being replaced. He received a 5/10 for his performance from the Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst. He explained Ugarte “failed to provide any control” in the middle of the park.

So, despite his brilliant work over the past few weeks, the Uruguayan could fall victim to Amorim’s rotation policy and get some much-needed rest against Brighton and Hove Albion. The man who could replace him is the impressive young midfielder Toby Collyer.

Why Collyer could start against Brighton

At the beginning of the season, Collyer was described as former manager Erik ten Hag’s “next youth project” by football analyst and The Overlap: The Breakdown host H. Well, the Dutchman didn’t survive much of the season, but Collyer has certainly stepped up in recent weeks.

He has played five times this season for the Red Devils, featuring in back-to-back games against Arsenal and Southampton, coming on for Ugarte in the centre of midfield in the most recent game.

He has certainly been a good replacement, with H explaining he has “energy in abundance”, exactly like his Uruguayan teammate. Ugarte showed his appreciation for Collyer’s performance against the Saints on Instagram after the game.

As the stats on Sofascore suggest, Collyer was fantastic against Arsenal and Southampton. He played 39 minutes at the Emirates Stadium, winning four duels, and showing his hard work off the ball. Against the South Coast side, his 37-minute cameo demonstrated his excellent ball-playing ability, as he completed 95% of his passes.

Those are encouraging performances where he showed two different sides of the 21-year-old’s game, and what was on show is what Amorim can expect from him. Quality when in possession and hard work to continuously work hard off the ball.

Even though he is far less experienced than Ugarte, there might not be too much of a drop-off in his performance compared to the United number 25. Collyer has already proved he can be an apt replacement for him over the past few weeks.

Starting the former Brighton academy star against his former club not only continues his exposure and increases his opportunities at the highest level, but also allows for some rest for Ugarte.

Having quality squad depth is a crucial thing in football, and with Collyer, United certainly have that. It will be an exciting moment if Amorim chooses to use him on Sunday afternoon.

Perfect Disasi alternative: Aston Villa launch late push for £32k-p/w star

There are only a few hours left to go before the January transfer window officially slams shut and Aston Villa are still looking to add to their squad.

The Villans confirmed the exciting capture of Marcus Rashford on loan from Manchester United, with an option to make it permanent, at the weekend.

They have also officially completed the signing of Paris Saint-Germain forward Marco Asensio on loan until the end of the season to further bolster their attacking options.

The former Real Madrid man and Rashford may not be the only players to follow Donyell Malen in making the move to Villa, however, as they are reportedly in the market for another defender.

Aston Villa pushing for defensive addition

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Aston Villa are ‘pushing’ to seal a last-gasp deal for Villarreal central defender Juan Foyth before the deadline.

Transfer Focus

The reporter claims that the Villans want to bring in another defender before the end of the January transfer window and they have identified Unai Emery’s former player as their target.

Bailey reveals that a move for Chelsea defender Axel Disasi, who is not involved in their clash with West Ham United in the Premier League tonight, is off the table and that has opened the door for them to pursue Foyth.

However, the journalist states that a deal for the Argentina international is a ‘very’ hard move to get over the line, potentially given how late in the window it is.

Why Aston Villa should sign Juan Foyth

The Villans should push as hard as possible to secure the Villarreal enforcer’s services in the coming hours because he could be a dream alternative to Disasi, who has struggled for Chelsea.

Foyth missed 19 matches with a knee injury, which he returned from in December, but has been a solid performer when called upon by the LaLiga outfit this term, and was last season.

Like Disasi, the former Tottenham Hotspur man is a versatile defender who can be called upon at right-back or centre-back, which suits the way Emery rotates his defensive options – providing cover in the hybrid right-back role.

The World Cup winner started 12 matches in LaLiga in the 2023/24 campaign and made 3.2 tackles and interceptions per game without making a single error that led to a shot, goal, or penalty for the opposition.

As you can see in the table above, Foyth has largely outperformed Disasi at league level in their limited appearances so far this season for their respective teams.

The Villarreal man could be less of a liability for Villa, from a defensive perspective, as he has not made as many direct errors and has been dribbled past far less frequently.

Therefore, the £32k-per-week ace, who also has the advantage of having worked with Emery in the past, would be a dream alternative to Disasi if they can get a deal over the line tonight.

Their next Olise: Crystal Palace have found another "exciting" teen star

Crystal Palace made two big additions during the winter transfer window, looking to equip Oliver Glasner with the necessary tools to compete in the second half of the season, as the Eagles aim for back-to-back top-half finishes.

Glasner’s side spent around £11.8m during the window, bringing Romain Esse to the club from Millwall on a permanent deal and bringing Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell in on loan, with a deadline day swoop for the 28-year-old England left-back.

With the window now shut, Palace could also look to call upon certain U21 players to play their part in the second half of the season, using their talented academy to plug holes in the squad and help Glasner address any issues that may crop up.

The best of Crystal Palace's academy

The main academy player making a big splash in the Premier League squad this campaign is 21-year-old Justin Devenny.

He has already made 13 first-team appearances, scoring one goal and totalling 299 minutes played. The midfielder has shown his ability to provide versatility from the bench, playing in midfield, attacking midfield and even out wide on occasions to do a job for the team.

Another U21 player who is staking his claim this season is 18-year-old Caleb Kporha, who has made three first-team appearances. The right-back has made his first few senior outings as a wingback, playing in the Daniel Munoz role when entering the fray, showing his athletic qualities to fulfil this role, getting up and down the pitch and covering the necessary ground.

But one U21 star who has been loaned out during the January window, and therefore will not play a part in the second half of this campaign. That said, he’s an exciting prospect and could go on to become their Michael Olise replacement when he returns.

Crystal Palace's new Olise

Asher Agbinone has made two substitute appearances in the Premier League this season for Palace but has now been loaned to League Two side, Gillingham, where he has already made three appearances, totalling 200 minutes for the club.

The 18-year-old has already been praised by his new Gillingham boss, John Coleman, who labelled the youngster an “exciting” asset for their team.

Despite being a natural winger, Agbinone has already played as a number ten for the League Two side, being involved in everything and winning man of the match on his debut.

When looking at all three of Olise’s seasons at Crystal Palace, you can see his gradual progression from joining the club from Reading at 19-years-old to his 2023/24 season, which earned the Frenchman his move to Bayern Munich, establishing himself as one of the world’s best in his position.

It was an EFL education at Reading that proved critical and Agbinone – another flashy forward player – is now enjoying his own lessons in the English football pyramid.

Since Olise left the club, Palace have lacked that cutting edge from the right side, a player who can go both ways, cut inside to get shots off/clip inswinging crosses into the box, whilst also having the capacity to beat their man on the outside 1v1 and deliver clever passes into the box to create for his teammates.

Crystal Palace player Michael Olise

Well, in Agbinone, a player who has completed an impressive 1.3 dribbles per game, the most of any Gills player in 2024/25, they may have their man soon enough.

Allowing the teen to develop on loan with less pressure on his shoulders, before making his return in the summer to be reassessed for a first-team squad spot next season seems the most sensible decision. If the 18-year-old can be managed effectively, he could undergo a similar rise to the top that Olise took at Palace.

Not Merino: Arsenal can replace Havertz by handing "special" star new role

This season has felt like a real slog for Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta’s side started their campaign hopeful of finally displacing Manchester City from atop the Premier League, and while they’re comfortably ahead of Pep Guardiola’s behemoth, they also sit seven points off of Liverpool in top spot.

Moreover, they’re set to be without Kai Havertz for the rest of the season, on top of injuries to Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus, with the latter also out for the rest of the year.

Arsenal's KaiHavertzreacts

It looked like the German’s absence would cost the Gunners’ for much of the game against Leicester City until summer signing Mikel Merino came off the bench as an auxiliary striker and scored a brace to secure his side all three points.

The Spaniard may have to start the next game up top in the current circumstances, but if the manager wants to try something different, he could start one of the team’s most exciting players there for the first time in his senior career.

Arsenal's striker options

In the absence of Havertz and Jesus, Arteta must find internal solutions to the team’s lack of traditional striker options, and while there are a few, some will be more popular than others.

Perhaps the least popular would be to start Raheem Sterling down the middle, as while he is primarily a winger, he’s played a considerable number of games across his lengthy career as a striker or false nine, and in 28 games there for City, he racked up 14 goals and six assists.

However, as most Arsenal fans will likely attest, the Sterling of a few years ago is not the same one we see today, and after plenty of disappointing performances for the North Londoners this term, we’d reckon this is an option that would not go down particularly well.

Likewise, while Trossard has played as the central striker at times in the last two and a half seasons, moving him to the middle amid the current injury crisis would likely see the Chelsea loanee start on the left, which, again, has yielded poor results so far this season.

So, with all that said, it does feel as if the most optimum strategy for Arteta to employ moving forward would be to start Merino up top, as even though it’s not a position he’s familiar with, he scored two poacher’s goals on the weekend; a perfect header and a lovely finish with his feet.

However, even though starting the Spaniard down the middle seems like the most logical course of action, there is another option Arteta could take.

The Arsenal star Arteta could start up top

The truth of the matter is that while Merino was sensational for Arsenal on the weekend and kept the team in the title race with his brace, the chance of him developing into a goalscoring forward seems incredibly slim.

Arsenal's Mikel Merinocelebrates scoring their first goal with teammates

In contrast, the other star of Saturday’s win, Ethan Nwaneri, could be one of the team’s next great goalscorers.

At least, the manager seems to believe so, telling the press in December that he could develop into a nine in the future.

He might not have played down the middle for the first team this season, but we have already seen just how dangerous he can be in front of goal in the relatively limited minutes he’s received.

For example, in 24 first-team appearances, totalling just 790 minutes, the “special talent,” as dubbed by respected football analyst Ben Mattinson, has scored seven goals and provided one assist.

That means the 17-year-old phenom is averaging a goal involvement every three games, or every 98.75 minutes, which is simply sensational.

Moreover, the Enfield-born dynamo played up top during his time in the academy, making eight appearances there for the U18s, scoring ten goals and providing two assists.

Ultimately, it would likely be sensible to start Merino up top, given his goals at the weekend, but as the games start to come thick and fast over the next couple of months, Arteta could, and maybe should, give Nwaneri the chance to show what he can do as the team’s starting number nine.

Ipswich have a star out on loan who’s outscoring all of the squad bar Delap

Ipswich Town would really cement themselves as a modern feel-good story if the Tractor Boys can pull off Premier League survival come the close of the ongoing campaign.

But, if the Tractor Boys were to taste the disappointment of an instant return to the Championship, they should be well equipped enough to make a push straight back up to the top-flight.

Whatever reality does slap the Suffolk side in the face, it would appear that Liam Delap will leave the Premier League underdogs for pastures new come the end of the campaign, especially if the latter outcome of falling back into the EFL occurs.

Delap's future at Ipswich

Reports are even suggesting now that Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea are very keen on landing the ex-Manchester City ace, with Caught Offside further elaborating that the transfer-heavy Blues are in ‘pole position’ to land the now £40m-rated striker.

Ipswich managed to land Delap for £20m less just last summer, which has proven to be a very smart move on the end of the Tractor Boys, with the relegation candidates perhaps deeper in their relegation anxiety if the lethal number 19 wasn’t around.

The above table makes for some damning reading when it comes to Ipswich’s over-reliance on their breakout “monster” – as new signing Alex Palmer labelled him after his opener versus Aston Villa – with Sammie Szmodics the relegation-threatened side’s second top scorer in league action with a meagre four strikes.

Therefore, if the underdogs are to stand any chance at staying up, they will need Delap to continue to be at his unbelievable best.

But, it doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom at Portman Road if the double whammy of relegation and Delap leaving happens, with stars such as one loan talent – who is outscoring every Tractor Boys player bar the 22-year-old this season – presumably given more senior chances subsequently.

The Ipswich star who's shining on loan

He could even be lucky enough to be gifted opportunities if McKenna’s side stay put in the top flight, based on his stunning showings down in League One.

Cameron Humphreys has already been given a fair few chances in the senior ranks by the Northern Irishman, with 17 league appearances coming his way during the 2022/23 season under the popular boss, but the Colchester-born midfielder’s loan stint to date away at promotion-chasing Wycombe Wanderers is doing him the world of good.

The promising 21-year-old hasn’t looked back since bagging this stylish solo strike on his Chairboys debut, with a further five league goals picked up from 29 third-tier contests boosting his loan side’s chances of automatic promotion glory.

He has, of course, been there and done that with Ipswich in the past when back-to-back promotions were on the menu, with now ex-Wycombe boss Matt Bloomfield heralding Humphreys and the rest of his determined teammates as “brilliant” after that goal hit the back of the net against Rotherham United.

Humphreys will just aim to see out the season with Wycombe by continuing to pick up more and more goal contributions, before perhaps being given more opportunities back in Suffolk, with the Premier League side arguably light on options centrally considering both Kalvin Phillips and Jens Cajuste are only in the building on loan.

Moreover, there is only really Conor Chaplin and Omari Hutchinson that can play in the number ten spot, with Humphreys – who new Chairboys boss Mike Dodds lauded as a “clever footballer” – keen to make a lasting impact back at his parent employers if everything goes to plan.

Friedkin now think they’ve sealed a deal for top off-field Everton target

The Friedkin Group now believe they have sealed a deal to bring in a top off-field target to Everton, according to a recent report.

Everton make it seven unbeaten in the league

It is now back-to-back draws for the Toffees, as they played out a 1-1 with Brentford this week, despite in-form forward Beto having a few one-on-one chances to get Everton ahead in the game. But they had to settle for a point at the end, which makes them seven unbeaten in the league and now 15 points clear of the bottom three.

Worse than Beto: Moyes must drop 6/10 Everton star who had 0 shots

The Everton forward endured a frustrating evening against Brentford on Wednesday.

ByDan Emery Feb 27, 2025

After the game against Brentford, David Moyes was happy with the result, given he doesn’t have a good record against the London side. “I am happy with that because I have never had a good record here. Thomas Frank is a good manager. I thought we were at least worthy of a point today. Beto had three one-on-ones with the goalkeeper, and we did not score any of them.

Friedkin confiden Kinnear will join Everton

So while Everton continue to pick up points and climb the table on the pitch, The Friedkin Group are working on off-field appointments, and according to Graeme Bailey, Everton are now confident that a deal is done to bring Angus Kinnear to the club from Leeds.

Everton managerDavidMoyescelebrates after the match

The report states that while Kinnear remains well respected at Elland Road by the 49ers and chairman Paraag Marathe, there is real confidence from TFG that he will be at Goodison Park for the start of next season, as he is believed to be interested in a fresh start elsewhere.

The Friedkin Group are looking for a new CEO to help the club turn around their fortunes both on and off the pitch as they kickstart their new era at Bramley Moore Dock.

Kinnear has emerged as a target after helping Leeds become a Premier League team again and now one of the best sides in the Championship. Kinnear has overseen many roles at Leeds during his eight years at Elland Road, from working on transfers to overseeing their stadium expansion project. So, his departure will be a big miss for Leeds, especially when it is expected that they will be in the Premier League next season.

Kinnear is expected to come in at Everton and work closely with Moyes, who will hope his new CEO can provide the backing and support he will need as Everton move into their new stadium and look to climb the table and move closer to those European places.

European giants reach agreement with "brave" Man Utd ace ahead of £42m deal

As the summer transfer window approaches, Atletico Madrid have already reportedly reached a verbal agreement with a Manchester United star who could now leave in a deal worth £42m.

Man Utd transfer news

In what has been a trend spanning over 10 years, Manchester United are once again in need of a major overhaul under a new manager.

This time, it’s Ruben Amorim who needs to welcome several fresh faces if he is to stamp his mark on the struggling side that Erik ten Hag left behind. However, unlike in previous tenures, the Red Devils are not in a position to splash the cash so easily.

As INEOS continue their cost-cutting measures, which have not come without controversy, the first thing they must do when the summer arrives is sell any players Amorim does not deem fit to feature in his strongest side – and that could see one star man depart.

According to reports in Spain, Atletico Madrid have now reached a verbal agreement with Alejandro Garnacho and could complete a summer deal worth €50m (£42m).

Man Utd open talks to sign £40m star outscoring Zirkzee & Hojlund combined

The Argentinian winger looked destined to follow in Marcus Rashford’s footsteps by departing in the January transfer window amid links to the likes of Chelsea, but eventually stayed put and has since crept back into Amorim’s side.

Nonetheless, he could still decide to leave a sinking ship and a manager whose system simply does not accommodate wingers when the summer arrives. United, meanwhile, could commence a summer of sales by showing Garnacho the door.

"Brave" Garnacho needs Man Utd exit

There was once a time when leaving Old Trafford seemed an absurd idea, but those days are long gone. Recent history instead tells a damning story of how players can benefit from leaving Manchester United – whether it’s been Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku or more recently, Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Now, Garnacho can become the latest to steal the headlines away from a club drowning in failure.

Under Ten Hag, the young winger looked destined to become the star of the team, having earned regular praise from the Dutchman, who told reporters: “I love to work with Garnacho.

“He’s a player who needs a challenge, he likes a challenge, he is very brave, he’s very confident, our job is to push him to high levels. He has high potential and now we have to get the potential out, therefore you have to work day by day.”

Now, under Amorim, he has been surplus to requirements at times, in what has been the harshest reality check possible for a player who has strayed from a path towards Old Trafford greatness.

Like others in the past, Garnacho should take hold of an opportunity to leave Manchester United behind this summer.
