Liverpool could replace Curtis Jones by signing Bellingham-esque star

Plucking prospects from lower-positioned sides and sculpting them into something grand has been a staple of Jurgen Klopp's reign at Liverpool, and he might be poised to repeat the feat in the coming weeks.

First-placed in the Premier League and still fighting for silverware across every front, Liverpool have been impressive this season and will rejoice in the successful sweeping changes to the midfield last summer, restoring the title-chasing capabilities.

How much money Klopp and co are willing to invest this month remains to be seen, but if the shrewder route is preferred, then Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil could be the perfect player to bolster the ranks.

Liverpool transfer news – Dan Neil

According to a report from Sunderland Nation at the start of the month, Liverpool – alongside Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur – are tracking Neil after his stunning performances for the Black Cats over the past several years.

The Reds were actually exploring a surprise deadline-day move back at the start of the term, so it's no shock that he remains on the radar having continued his development. He could cost in the region of £10m, a bargain price indeed.

Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil.

Tipped to thrive in the Premier League, the 22-year-old would be an astute purchase and one who could make a big impact at Anfield, joining the long line of clever signings under Klopp's leadership.

How Dan Neil compares to Jude Bellingham

Neil has amassed 131 appearances for Sunderland since rising from the youth ranks and has posted ten goals and 15 assists, increasingly important in the team's endeavours and receiving praise for his "starry-eyed" approach by former Sunderland boss Lee Johnson, with confidence and guile that could send him to the very top.

By the man's own admission, Neil wishes to mould his game from Jude Bellingham's blueprint, and while, of course, the respective players are not performing at the same level (the England international, aged 20, stakes a claim for the best player in the world right now) there is a certain semblance in style.

Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham

Bellingham has been in ridiculous form since signing for Real Madrid from Borussia Dortmund for a fee rising to £115m in the summer, plundering 17 goals and five assists from just 22 outings across all competitions.

Dubbed "world-class" by Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett, Bellingham was of a vested interest to Liverpool in the months preceding the summer, but the Merseyside outfit ultimately threw in the towel after conceding that funds must be spread across the engine room to complete the desired overhaul.

Of the Los Blancos sensation, Neil said: "He’s somebody that goes onto the pitch and does a little bit of everything, and does it at a very high level as well. I think I see myself as that type of player."

The Sunderland midfielder, who offers more than a hint of multi-functionality in the centre of the park, has scored four goals and supplied three assists from 25 appearances in the Championship, completing 90% of his passes, averaging 1.2 key passes, 1.4 tackles and 5.2 ball recoveries per game and succeeding with 57% of his dribbles, as per Sofascore.

When comparing these metrics to the one-time Birmingham City youngster, it can be surmised that there is indeed a striking similarity, with Bellingham completing 90% of his passes in La Liga, averaging 1.6 key passes, 1.5 tackles and 4.3 recoveries per outing and prevailing with 58% of his dribbles.

As previously stated, this is not an argument that the 5 foot 10 Neil – who is two years Bellingham's senior – is performing at the same level, but there is no denying that he offers a myriad of skills that could allow him to emulate his countryman's match approach.

Dan Neil and Abdoullah Ba of Sunderland.

And with Liverpool's extensive former scouting of the £344k-per-week phenomenon, maybe Neil would bring the attributes that would allow him to slot right into the system.

With a multitude of glowing qualities, the Black Cat's technical prowess is among the finest facets of his repertoire, ranking among the top 15% of midfielders across divisions similar to the Championship for pass completion, the top 13% for passes attempted and the top 14% for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref.

With this in mind, perhaps Klopp could view the player as the all-purpose midfield replacement for Curtis Jones, who is an integral part of the team but has recently attracted the attention of Arsenal, with a reliable club insider at the Emirates revealing there has already been contact regarding a possible transfer in the future.

Why Dan Neil could replace Curtis Jones

Jones – a boyhood Gunners fan – has recently been hailed for his "phenomenal" ball retention and game intelligence by analyst Raj Chohan, having also nurtured an attacking instinct that has provided him with three goals and assists apiece from 12 starts this term.

To emphasise the level at which he is performing – perhaps going somewhat under the radar – Jones, 22, ranks among the top 2% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues for pass completion, the top 6% for goals and the top 9% for assists and the top 19% for tackles per 90.

While the club's youth graduate is contracted until 2027, he is one of the senior set-up's lower earners at £15k-per-week, and though Anfield officials will be at ease regarding any simmering rumours, there will be an acceptance that fresh terms are necessary if Arsenal intrigue intensifies.

Curtis Jones.

An all-encompassing and energetic player, Klopp would bewail the dynamo's possible departure, but should this occur, perhaps Neil – who has been described as "invaluable" to his second-tier side by former boss Tony Mowbray – would be the perfect replacement.

Neil, like Jones, is still contracted for a few years, but if Sunderland fail to secure promotion to the Premier League soon, he may be convinced to depart, trying his hand at the pinnacle of English football.

And Liverpool appear happy to oblige; though there's something of an overload of multi-action midfielders in Klopp's squad, Jones' sale – should it occur – would facilitate Neil's arrival and subsequent rise as a key component of a silverware-chasing team.

Transfer boost for Liverpool, Man Utd & Real Madrid! Why PSG are struggling in the race to sign Lille wonderkid Leny Yoro – explained

Paris Saint-Germain are falling behind Liverpool, Manchester United and Real Madrid in the hunt to win the signature of Lille wonderkid Leny Yoro.

  • Yoro tipped for stardom
  • PSG believe they are trailing race
  • Liverpool, Man Utd and Real Madrid in lead
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Parisian giants believe they are losing the race to sign the defender who is making waves at Lille at just 18-years-old, as per. Given Yoro's contract expires at the end of next season, Lille may feel compelled to cash in on their prized possession and spark a mass bidding war among Europe's elite.

  • Getty

    THE EXPLANATION

The key reason for PSG's pessimism lies in Yoro's dream of playing for Real Madrid. According to the report, the defender can 'see himself' playing in the white of Madrid and following in the footsteps of Raphael Varane in moving to the Bernabeu at 18 years old and winning four Champions League titles. Meanwhile, Lille are unlikely to want to sell to a Ligue 1 rival.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Yoro made 32 appearances for Lille in Ligue 1 last season and has established himself as a mainstay in Paulo Fonseca's side. The French defender was born in the suburbs of Paris before moving to Lille at six years old. He was spotted by the club and joined their academy in 2017, aged 12. Since then, he has gone from strength to strength.

    WHAT NEXT FOR YORO?

Lille will have to decide on their young defender's future should Yoro not extend his contract at the club. If the defender chooses not to sign a new deal, they may well look to sell the wonderkid. Yoro will then decide whether he wishes to emulate Varane at Madrid or be the successor to Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool.

Liverpool now eyeing move to sign Leeds United star Crysencio Summerville

Liverpool are interested in completing the signing of an "exceptional" player who has broken Reds hearts in the past, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

Liverpool may need Mohamed Salah replacement

Jurgen Klopp has assembled one of the strongest attacking units on show at Anfield in many years, with five brilliant options to choose from in the final third. Mohamed Salah is the undisputed star man, but Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo are top-quality players in their own right, too.

There is the worry that Salah will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, however, with the 31-year-old out of contract at Anfield in the summer of 2025, and therefore having to make a key decision regarding his future later this year. He will either need to sign an extension or move on to pastures new, most likely a Saudi Pro League club.

Should that happen, it is essential that the Reds and FSG act fast and replace the Egyptian superstar with a fantastic player, trying to fill the void left by one of the best players in world football over the past five or six years. While not necessarily a tailor-made immediate successor for Salah, it looks as though Liverpool are eyeing up one highly-rated young attacking ace.

Liverpool want Crysencio Summerville

According to an update from Anfield Watch, Liverpool are interested in signing Leeds United youngster Crysencio Summerville, seeing him as an exciting prospect.

rutter-summerville-leeds-opinion

"Liverpool are considering a move for highly-rated Crysencio Summerville during the upcoming summer transfer window, Anfield Watch can reveal.

"The 22-year-old Dutch winger has been turning heads with his impressive performances for Leeds in Championship this season, leading to a slew of interest from clubs in the Premier League, with Jurgen Klopp's side among the former Feyenoord star's admirers."

As mentioned, Summerville, who shares the same agent as Curtis Jones, may not yet be close to Salah's level, in terms of being a world-class player who any team on the planet would want on their side, but he is someone with a high ceiling who Liverpool know a lot about. That's because he scored the winning goal in Leeds' 2-1 win at Anfield last season, in what remains the Reds' only Premier League home defeat in front of fans since April 2017.

The Dutchman has plenty of admirers, one of whom is former Reds striker Michael Owen, who has said of him in the past:

"This is such a good goal. Look at that for a touch [Summerville’s first]. The ball is behind him. He takes one lovely touch with the outside of his foot, then another one to keep him away from the defender and finishes it brilliantly. This is a really hard chance. He’s behind the defender in many ways when he gets the ball. I mean how he does that is really, really exceptional."

Still only 22, Summerville has starred in the Championship this season, shining out wide, and he could be seen as a good squad player to begin with at Liverpool, before becoming more of a key man over time.

Everton in the mix to seal Ramazani transfer swoop – report

Everton are one of a number of top clubs battling to sign an "explosive" attacking player who they have already contacted in the past, according to a fresh transfer update.

Everton takeover & transfer news

The Blues have so much to tackle at the moment both on and off the pitch, with Sean Dyche no doubt desperate to be able to simply focus on performances and results. The ten-point deduction has been handled well so far, with Everton getting themselves out of the Premier League relegation zone, but further punishments could still be coming their way, according to recent updates.

There are also issues surrounding the takeover of the club by 777 Partners, with doubts continuing to emerge over their credentials, so there is understandable reason for unease within the fanbase.

One thing that could create some much-needed positivity is new signings in the January transfer window, and Everton have been linked with plenty of players in recent weeks. Kalvin Phillips is a wanted man ahead of a likely loan move away from Manchester City this month, and the Merseysiders are seen as one of the clubs who could snap him up.

Brentford's Frank Onyeka is another possible target for Everton before January reaches its conclusion, while West Brom youngster Tom Fellows is also a name who has been thrown into the hat.

Everton want to sign Largie Ramazani

According to a new update from Spanish media (via Sport Witness), Everton are fighting other clubs for the signing of Largie Ramazani, with the 22-year-old potentially leaving Almeria in the near future.

UD Almeria forward Largie Ramazani.

Only earlier this month, the Blues were reported to have made contact with the Belgian over a move to Goodison Park, and it doesn't look as though their interest has gone away. This latest rumour suggests that Almeria "could be satisfied by closing his sale in the coming days", as long as a bid of €8m (£6.8m) comes their way.

Ramazani could be a strong January addition for Everton, adding quality in attacking areas and invariably taking up a left-sided role, allowing him to battle with the likes of Jack Harrison and Dwight McNeil for playing time. This season, he has six goal contributions (two goals and four assists) in 11 La Liga starts, as well as an overall tally of 20 goals and eight assists in 118 appearances for his current club.

Meanwhile, football talent scout Jacek Kulig is someone who rates the youngster highly as a player, saying of him recently:

"Explosive winger, electric pace & acceleration, superb dribbling skills & close control. Likes to play a direct style, dynamic & very positive with the ball, likes to make effective off-the-shoulder runs, counter-attacking weapon. 'The Mini-Vinicius'."

This really highlights the weapons that Ramazani has in his armoury, and if Everton could beat others to his signature, he could be an inspired signing who improves with age for some time to come.

Nottingham Forest in advanced talks for “crazy” gem after Reyna hijack

Nottingham Forest had reached an agreement on personal terms with Borussia Dortmund attacker Gio Reyna over a loan deal until the end of the season. The American, who, like Nuno, is represented by Jorge Mendes' agency, wants to leave the Bundesliga club before the end of the January transfer window, and had already shaken hands over a move to the City Ground.

However, Forest, who wanted the option to buy Reyna at the end of the initial loan, are not the only interested party, and it's now emerged that the relegation-threatened Premier League side are set to miss out on the USA international, as Ligue 1 outfit Marseille are in "advanced" talks with Dortmund for Reyna.

Forest deep in talks over Carlos Forbs

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Reds aren't dwelling on the apparent Reyna hijack. Indeed, Forest are in advanced talks to sign Carlos Borges from Ajax. The player, who now prefers to be known as Carlos Forbs, could make a return to English football after his previous stint with Manchester City.

While he too plays on the wing, Romano clarifies that Nuno had wanted to sign both the 19 year-old and Reyna before the deadline, rather than one or the other. Negotiations are progressing well as Forest look to put together the kind of package that could persuade Ajax, and hopefully not miss out a second time.

"Crazy" Forbs showing promise in Ajax chaos

In the words of talent scout Jacek Kulig, Forbs put up some "crazy numbers" during his stint in the City academy. In his final season in Manchester (2022/23), he amassed a whopping 47 direct goal contributions in 33 appearances across all competitions, a rate of 1.4 every match. He finished as the Premier League 2 top scorer with 21 and, having placed for third assists (12), unsurprisingly led the way for goal involvements too (33).

Forbs had also been devastating at a lower level, scoring 23 times and providing 21 assists in 28 Under-18 Premier League appearances, and he handled the step-up with aplomb. He also enjoyed success at international level by making the under-19 Euros team of the tournament after Portugal finished as runners-up, but the big question was how he'd handle the step-up to the senior level.

The winger had initially looked set to join another Premier League side in West Ham, but then Ajax swooped in to hijack the deal. City hold a 20% sell-on clause, which could prompt the Amsterdam outfit to drive a particularly hard bargain.

Forbs has scored twice and set up four more in his first 25 appearances for Ajax, and while those numbers may not sound spectacular, context is important. He's only played 1,119 mins, the equivalent of 12.4 full matches, and he's also had to deal with the turmoil at the club, who sacked manager Maurice Steijn in October after disastrously dropping into the relegation places.

They've since recovered to fifth, but they're still an enormous 21 points behind leaders PSV. In spite of that, Forbs managed to grab a goal and an assist on his Europa League debut against Marseille, and has been playing well recently with three goal involvements in his last six in the league. As long as Forest are patient, then they could have a gem on their hands.

Former Manchester United legend and ITV pundit Gary Neville was one of the critics of Alexander-Arnold over his performances as the Three Lions scraped past Serbia with a 1-0 win on the night thanks to Jude Bellingham. The former full-back tore into the Liverpool star's skill set as he went on to insinuate that a full-back is a full-back because they've previously not been good enough to play further forward. However, Neville has also received a lot of criticism for his opinions about the 25-year-old.

But I think there's an element of wanting to get Gallagher into the team but he knows that would be deemed as being quite negative. I think he's gone half in, he's not gone Gallagher, he's not gone Mainoo."

Newcastle must unleash their "razor sharp" weapon alongside Barnes

Across the season so far, Eddie Howe's Newcastle United haven't played up to the same standards that they showed last season.

The Magpies have gone from qualifying for the Champions League and cruising past almost any team which was thrown at them to now, where they find themselves firmly out of the top four race.

Granted, Howe's side have been plagued with injuries this season, but they made many summer additions in order to bolster the depth of their squad, as depth was also one of the key problems that the club faced last season – hence, why players such as Lewis Miley have had to become regulars within the Magpies' squad.

First-team absences have been that much of a recurring theme this season, that in each game, Newcastle have lost close to half of their team.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

Due to the injuries that have occurred, Howe had to share a club statement with the media on 9 February and admitted that they have "made mistakes", with the Englishman no doubt hoping that such errors can be put right away to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League this evening.

Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes' season in numbers

As aforementioned, Newcastle made many summer signings in order to bolster their squad for the 2023/24 season.

One of those who joined was, Harvey Barnes. The former Leicester man made the move for a fee worth around £38m after the Foxes were relegated.

Since arriving in Tyneside, the winger hasn't really had much of a chance to make his arrival known as he has only managed to play a total of nine games in all competitions whilst only contributing to three goals.

However, the 26-year-old marked his return from injury with a crucial goal in last week's 4-4 draw with Luton Town and will now be hoping to use that as a platform to build on over the coming months.

Anthony Gordon, on the other hand, was signed in the January transfer window of the 2022/23 season for a fee worth around £45m.

Although the former Everton man's first season with the club got off to a rocky due to the fee that the Magpies paid for the youngster, he has seemingly come into his own this season.

Anthony Gordon.

Gordon has played in 33 games this season and has managed to contribute to 15 goals, making him one of Newcastle's most influential players.

However, much like his peers, the 22-year-old has been ruled out with an ankle injury and no return date has yet been set.

So, with a limited amount of choice, Howe will likely be looking towards Callum Wilson to fulfil an attacking role at the City Ground this evening, flanked by the returning Barnes.

How Callum Wilson can help Newcastle defeat Forest

Wilson has been managed under Howe for many years now, creating a sort of synergy between the pair.

More often than not, the 32-year-old has been the player on the sidelines due to injury, even missing 16 games this season.

However, the experienced attacker is now back and will be looking to showcase the ability he still has against Nuno Espirito Santo's side.

Wilson has even been described as "razor sharp" by pundit Matthew Upson due to his clinical prowess in front of goal and, when available, the former Bournemouth man has played a total of 21 games and scored eight goals in all competitions his term.

Newcastle could now bench 4/10 star who was as bad as Dan Burn v Luton

Following Newcastle’s surprising 4-4 draw with Luton, Eddie Howe may be forced to bench an attacker for the foreseeable future.

A win could see the Magpies boosted up to as high as seventh in the Premier League table and with games to come against Arsenal and Bournemouth, a victory could help motivate them to win against two very in-form sides.

As such, unleashing both Barnes and Wilson into the frontline could well be crucial…
