Man City fans shouldn’t be surprised…he’s got form

So out of nowhere Carlos Tevez has handed in a transfer request as City go close to the summit of the Premiership- only at City eh?

It’s not as if he hasn’t got form. He seems to fall out with management a lot – rarely has a player been so entwined with the machinations of the boardroom than Carlos Tevez. The result is the life of a nomad, wandering from one club to another.

At Boca, Tevez left having claimed that the press intrusion in Argentina was too much for him and his family and the club weren’t doing enough to support him. Of course he claimed he loved the club and supporters, and always would. Three seasons there could well be the longest he stays anywhere.

At Corinthians he went on strike, after arguments with teammates, the head coach and the club president. Of course he claimed he loved the club and supporters, and always would. Still, they got a whole year and a half out of him.

At West Ham, the troubles his transfer caused are well-documented. He also stormed off and threatened to go on strike after being substituted, and disappeared to Argentina at one point. Of course he claimed he loved the club and supporters, and always would. Still, they got a whole year out of him.

At Manchester United, Tevez complained of being fatigued and overplayed in his first season. In his second, he complains of being underplayed. Of course he claimed he loved the club and supporters, and always would. Still, they got a two whole years out of him.

At City, it’s been the same old story. He is tired, homesick, hates football, hates footballers, wants to retire, falls out with executives and his manager. Of course he claims he loves the club and supporters, and always will. Still, City got a whole year and four months out of him, though he wanted to leave after the first year.

Now it would seem hypocritical to lay into Tevez when all City fans have been idolising him for the past 15 months. But then all football fans are hypocrites when it suits, and whilst Tevez has been the most important and possibly best player we have had in decades (step aside Kit Symons), I have never been particularly impressed with him as a person.

Not that this matters – I don’t require all footballers to be eloquent, witty, charming, selfless souls – as long as they do the business on the pitch, that’s all that matters. But over the past year I’ve had a softer spot for players who quite simply do their job and are rarely heard of off the pitch – Silva, Milner and hopefully our next captain, Kompany.

This whole episode stinks. Someone is lying, as City’s account of affairs differs entirely from that of Tevez.

Tevez’s reasons are to me drivel. He is paid obscene amounts of money to play football and work with fellow players, coaches and his manager. Who on earth thinks it is acceptable to leave because of his relationship with “executives”?! He should barely have a relationship with them anyway considering after four years in the country he couldn’t be bothered to learn more than a few words of English, and, as he is keen to tell us, money isn’t the issue, so shouldn’t require many meetings with Cook et al anyway, except for frequent holiday requests.

Inevitably Cook will get more stick from certain quarters for all this, despite there being no evidence of him doing anything wrong. Tevez has three and a half years left on his contract, and City don’t negotiate mid-season anyway.

Continued on Page TWO

Tevez’s right-hand man in all of this is well known – Kia Joorabchian, and my thoughts on him are quite clear, and not complimentary, but I imagine he has very good lawyers, and I’m fed up of having to spell check his name. Whatever, he’ll soon be making another few million out of a Tevez transfer (though he is not officially an agent, but merely an “advisor”).

City are thankfully in a unique position- money does not matter, at least for a year or two. We could take a stand and simply refuse to let him leave, but it seems pointless to have his divisive presence hanging over the club

A line was put out that he misses his family in Argentina which is understandable- if that was the sole reason, then you could kind of understand. It isn’t the only reason though, as will be proven when he doesn’t go back to Argentina. You lose sympathy too when you realise that the relationship with the mother of his children ended and his family returned to Argentina after certain stories emerged in Sunday newspapers. Try google for further details.

Perhaps Tevez thinks his family will move to Spain, as it more closely resembles Argentinean life.

If a player is unhappy, then he is unhappy – I do not expect them to be treated like slaves, and I accept players move clubs and contracts are pretty worthless, there merely to receive compensation when the move occurs – but the timing of this stinks, and leaves a nasty taste on the mouth. And if Tevez thought his statement would garner him support (though I doubt he cares) amongst City fans, he was wrong – almost to a man he is being portrayed as the guilty party in all this.

Because let’s be honest here, City have bent over backwards to accommodate this unbelievably needy man – regular visits back to Argentina, positive articles, the highest pay packet at the club, reassuring chats, endless meetings. As a Times journalist said yesterday, why don’t we just let him and Kia design the kit and decide transfer policy and be done with it.

But what grates with me, is that it is disrespectful to do this now when City have been so willing to look after him. To do it when the team are gelling and making a title surge shows a total lack of respect for the club that employs him, its fans, and puts pressure on the team by losing a star player outside of a transfer window.

His transfer statement hinted at promises not being kept, but what promises could these possibly be? He knew when joining we were a work in progress – we were never going to start sweeping up silverware within a year or two. There are reports that he was angry at Hughes being sacked, the man with 4 premiership wins in his last 30 games, but the fact is that hiring and firing is none of his business, or at least not just cause to want out. And what’s more, that was a year ago. But City can’t really complain I guess- it was this constant feeling of injustice that allowed us to sign him in the first place.

The recent video on the official site of how happy he was is bizarre. Everything he said in that now appears to be a lie – yet he happily invited City into his own home (it was his suggestion) to shoot it. But then the club knew his problems when he made the video. It was shot on November 19th, but didn’t appear for 2 weeks as it needed editing, translating, and there were other videos to publish first. In the end it went up the day after it seems he handed in an official transfer request. Well done City – it shows him up for what he is. Even more bizarrely, he apparently renewed the rental on his home for two years with an option on a third just a few weeks ago.

So what now? The request has been turned down, which is normal, but players always get their move. Look how he says in his statement that he will clear his head and decide what to do, as if it is entirely his decision.

Well thanks for what you gave us Tevez- total commitment on the pitch and many great goals and performances. But you could have been a legend at this club – it seems you never will be anywhere. If you had an ounce of respect for the supporters who have sung your name over the past year and who you praise so widely in your official statement, or your employer who tried so hard to make you feel at home and part of the family, you would have kept your mouth shut and knuckled down until the summer then left with our blessing. Good luck to his next employer- I hope they have £50m spare.

Tottenham outcast has every right to feel let down by Harry

Tottenham’s midfielder Niko Kranjcar must be feeling pretty confused at the moment. His manager Harry Redknapp obviously rates him; he bought him from his old cub Portsmouth. Yet, despite public cries that the Croat is very much part of his long-term plans, Redknapp insists on bringing in others and forcing Kranjcar further down the pecking order. So is it time for Kranjcar to turn his back on Spurs?

We all know it’s a squad game. Tottenham have to plan for a potential fixture pile-up due to a combination of Champions League football, an ambitious pursuit of Premier League glory and rearranged games due to the ‘big freeze’. But Kranjcar’s case is different to any other of the squad players at White Hart Lane, or anywhere else for that matter. How can his manager justify only including him in six fixtures all season, but still insisting the player has a ‘big part to play this season’? No one can doubt his ability at 26, he has plenty to offer. But if getting in ahead of the likes of Gareth Bale, Rafael van der Vaart or Luka Modric wasn’t hard enough, Kranjcar now has to compete with the latest White Hart Lane recruit – Steven Pienaar.

So what is it about him that the rest of us can’t see? He generally does well when called upon, and we never hear about him brawling with team-mates on the training ground or getting into trouble on nights out. I’d be tempted to side with the midfielder and assume he hasn’t exactly been treated brilliantly by his manager. If you plan to sign someone like Pienaar, why deny Kranjcar the chance to go the other way? Everton bid £3 million, if reports are to believed.

And what about the proposed move to Werder Bremen? Redknapp didn’t exactly stand in his way, but talking to the press, he did his utmost to make us all believe he didn’t want to lose such a talented player. My response would be to play him a little more!

True, Kranjcar has been unlucky with injuries. When he first joined Tottenham, he was heavily involved in first-team action. But if this tells us anything, it’s that he is considered good enough by the Spurs management. With this in mind, signing Pienaar is a bit of a mystery to me.

Kranjcar has every right to feel hard done by. Maybe his problem is that he isn’t the modern day prima-donna who will start throwing his incredibly flash and expensive toys and of his brand new pram because he isn’t getting his own way. Is he becoming a victim of professionalism? We can only speculate. But if another player like van der Vaart for example wasn’t getting much playing time, it would be interesting to see how he’d react if his club turned down a bid from another club.

What’s worrying for the Croatian himself, is that his national team manager Slaven Bilic has now come out and said he needs to be playing football. He could quite easily be playing the same standard of football elsewhere but as it stands, Tottenham seem to be stifling his progress.

Niko Kranjcar is too good to be a squad player at a club like Spurs. At 26, time is on his side, yet you get the feeling his next move is a big one. Kranjcar owes nothing to Spurs and if he were to come out and demand a transfer like so many other of the Premier League’s ‘stars’ then I personally wouldn’t blame him in the slightest. Time to go, Niko.

Mazembe triumph in marathon shootout

Congolese side TP Mazembe have continued their stellar season with a penalty shootout victory over FUS Rabat in the African Super Cup final.

Mazembe achieved global recognition in December when they became the first African side to qualify for the FIFA World Club Cup final, where they eventually lost 3-0 to Italian champions Inter Milan.

Lamine N’Diaye’s side were not to be denied on this occasion though, although they did need penalties to overcome Rabat in the Super Cup final, which is contested by the winners of the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederations Cup.

Neither side could find a goal in regulation time or the 30 minutes of extra time at the Stade Frederic Kibassa Maliba in Lumumbashi, meaning the trophy would be decided on penalties.

Even then there was little separating the sides, with Mazembe eventually triumphing 9-8 after a marathon shoot-out in front of a vocal home crowd.

Guardiola hails record-breaking Barca

Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola was a proud man after his side equaled the La Liga record of 15 straight victories.

Barca’s 3-0 victory away to Hercules not only avenged their defeat to the Spanish strugglers in September last year, but equalled the league record set by Real Madrid in the 1960-61 season.

Guardiola did not shy away from talking down the achievement that his all-conquering side brought up on Saturday, as they consolidated their seven-point advantage on top of the table, although Jose Mourinho’s Real side scan reduce the gap when they face Osasuna on Sunday.

“It is a tremendous honour to win 15 consecutive league games and equal the record of (Alfredo) di Stefano’s Real Madrid side,” Guardiola said of the team which won the first five European Cups between 1956 and 1960.

“I am sure that some team will beat the record but nobody has managed to do it in 50 years. We are proud. If 50 years have passed, it shows how difficult it is.”

Barcelona will hold the record outright if they can beat Atletico Madrid at the Camp Nou next week.

Guardiola also heaped praise on midfielder Lionel Messi, who scored two goals to seal the match against Hercules.

“He (Messi) has scored 164 goals at the age of 23 and is fourth in Barcelona’s all-time scorer’s list, but if he continues like this he is going to break all the records,” he said.

Mazzarri: Every game a final for Napoli

There are ‘no limits’ to what Napoli can achieve this Serie A season, according to manager Walter Mazzarri.

Mazzarri’s side is three points from league-leaders AC Milan, with the latter faltering badly after the Serie A’s winter break.

Napoli have a testing trip to Roma on Saturday, and Mazzarri knows the importance of every game as the season enters its final third.

“We have no limits,” Mazzarri said.

“We will play each match as if it were a final, that is all. The rest is only a media slogan more than for us, we’re not interested. We will only look at the table at the end of the season. If a team never loses at home it means it is even more difficult to face at home.”

Roma sit in seventh on the Serie A table, but will be smarting from a 5-3 thumping at the hands of third-placed Inter Milan last Sunday.

The result ended a five-game undefeated streak for Claudio Ranieri’s men, and Mazzarri is aiming to prolong Roma’s misery for his side’s own benefit.

“We hope to play a perfect match in order to keep our title hopes alive and it will be a further boost in our confidence,” he said.

“If we play at our best, giving 100 percent as we did in many matches, both in defence and in attack, we know we can give any team a game.”

Another transfer masterstroke by Arsene Wenger?

Is there any manager in football history better at scouting players than Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger? I think not and with the recent news of Arsenal’s latest signing, it looks like the Frenchman may have done it again with the capture of Jon Miquel Toral Harper. The half Spanish, half English 16 year old is part of Barcelona’s youth team just like Arsenal’s captain, Cesc Fabregas, who signed in similar circumstances in 2003. Has Wenger found another gem?

Judging by the video compilation that’s been circling the web this week, Toral Harper looks to be a very good prospect for the Gunners once he joins in the summer. Wenger has taken advantage of the rule that Spanish clubs cannot sign players on a permanent contract until the age of 17 and the deal hasn’t helped relations with Barcelona. The Barca president Sandro Rosell said the deal was “immoral” but with the double standards involved in today’s game such comments can’t be taken too seriously, after all Wenger hasn’t done anything illegal. Ironically, the agent of the lanky 16 year old midfielder is none other than Pepe Guardiola’s brother!

Although the trophyless seasons of late for Arsenal have been a big talking point, you can’t question the job Arsene Wenger has done at the club. Since that remarkable unbeaten season, Wenger has had to go about rebuilding for the next Arsenal squad for the future and this could be the year that the Frenchman can say it was well worth it. Toral Harper joins a list of youngsters at Arsenal who are full of potential; even more so that the current squad of players were at their age. Could Wenger be creating a 3rd generation squad that will be better than the rest?

I for one wouldn’t dismiss that, as I can imagine an Arsenal team in the next decade having more in comparison with Barcelona, with the majority of the team coming from the youth set up. Players like Toral Harper and Fabregas still count as the same can be said about Lionel Messi in regards to scouring the globe for youngsters. One thing is for sure, Arsene Wenger will be leaving a legacy behind at Arsenal Football Club and as a huge football fan I look forward to see what new players make the grade over the next several years.

Veh to leave Hamburg post

Hamburg manager Armin Veh has announced that he will not continue as manager of the club next season.Veh, 50, had a contract with the Bundesliga outfit until June 2012 but revealed on Tuesday that this season would be his last in charge of the club.”Given the situation at the club right now, I am not going to be here any more next year,” Veh said. The former Stuttgart manager has endured a difficult spell in charge of the club and, after just two wins in their last six matches, has decided to walk away from the club.Veh’s contract will be resolved by mutual consent at the conclusion of the Bundesliga season in the same vein as Bayern Munich manager Louis van Gaal, whose departure from the Bavarian club at the end of the current campaign was announced on Monday.Hamburg, who sit seventh in the league, were surprisingly beaten 4-2 at home to Mainz on Saturday.Veh is bound to be the subject of interest when he does depart Hamburg, having led Stuttgart to the 2007 Bundesliga crown.

TEN Euro starlets putting Premier League clubs on transfer alert

The chase for Anderlecht youngster Romelu Lukaku is really heating up. It’s believed that Anderlecht turned down a £17.5 million bid from Spurs for the prodigious young talent over the summer. Indeed, the player is set to stay at his club until he reaches 18 and has finished with school. Where does his future lie after this? The two main clubs in contention for his signature are Real Madrid and Chelsea. At the moment you have to say Chelsea are favourites – Didier Drogba is Lukaku’s hero. Lukaku has previously been pictured in a Chelsea shirt visiting Stamford Bridge. As it seems more and more as though Lukaku’s future lies with Chelsea, we count down a further 10 teenagers playing in Europe that are likely to have the Premier League scouts out sniffing. In order to be in contention all you need is to be 21 or under and to play for a European side (outside the Premier League).

10. Christian Eriksen:

Barring Nicklas Bendtner, the Danes have had little to shout about in terms of prospects for the future. That was until young Christian Eriksen came onto the scene. He won the Danish U-17 talent of the year for his performances in the Danish Superliga. This saw him earn a move to Ajax where he has garnered comparisons to Ajax youth products Wesley Sneijder and Rafael van der Vaart. He’s an unnaturally good reader of the game for his age and is perhaps best at home in the traditional “number 10” role. He was the youngest player competing at the 2010 World Cup and is currently only 18-years-old.

9. Stevan Jovetić:

At only 20-years-old, Jovetić is a player of great natural ability. His best attributes are his technical nous, great dribbling ability, being able to ghost pass players with an expert change of pace and expert close control. He currently plies his trade for Fiorentina where he’s earned comparisons to Queen guitarist Brian May thanks to his long flowing curly locks. In footballing terms, he’s been labelled the ‘next Baggio’ and has netted an impressive 6 goals in 11 international appearances for Montenegro. Charismatic and talented, it’s likely that he’ll move on from Fiorentina towards bigger and better things in the near future.

8. Sotiris Ninis:

The next big thing in Greek football, Ninis is the right winger for Panathinaikos where he has his reputation. For such a young player (20-years-old) he holds a surprising number of records. He’s the youngest player to have won the HFF (The governing body of football in Greece) Young Player of the Year award. In May 2008, on his international debut, Ninis became the youngest ever player to score for Greece. He’s also the youngest player to ever have captained Panathinaikos, as he did at the age of 18 and 125 days. Despite injuries disrupting his career a year or so ago, he’s back on track and looking as exciting a prospect as ever.

7. Moussa Sissoko:

French footballer Moussa Sissoko currently plays for Toulouse in Ligue 1. At just 21-years-old he has already garnered comparisons to tough midfielders Patrick Viera and Real Madrid’s Mahamadou Diarra. He certainly fits into that mould of player. He’s capable of playing the holding role, or adapting quickly into a more attacking position. He’s got bundles of energy and is a real box-to-box player with tenacity and a great tackle. It’s little wonder that clubs like Spurs, Man City, Juventus and more recently Liverpool have declared their interest.

6. Marko Marin:

One of last season’s standout players in the Bundesliga, Marin is definitely a player that the top clubs all around Europe will be keeping their eye on. A string of good performances saw Marin join Germany’s World Cup 2010 squad. He made two rather lacklustre appearances in the World Cup, but this hasn’t stopped pundits tipping him for bigger things. He currently plays out on the wing for Werder Bremen where his tricky feet and great close control have brought him a number of admirers. He is very much a ‘flair’ player and has drawn comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi – not bad for a 21 year old.

5. Alan Dzagoev:

Despite his age – he’s 20-years-old – this young man is already regarded as a star by many in his native Russia. He’s an attacking midfielder for CSKA Moscow, for whom he has been a consistently impressive performer. In 2008, the Russian Football Union deemed Dzagoev the Best Young Player of the Year. He’s got a great attitude, he’s modest and hard-working and is extremely passionate about football. He’s also got an eye for goal – in 68 performances for CSKA Moscow he has scored 21 goals from midfield. That’s a statistic that’s sure to interest some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

4. Douglas Costa:

Currently playing for Shakhtar Donetsk, this young Brazilian is just 20-years-old. He’s a left-footed attacking midfielder who can also player as a winger. He’s a good reader of the game, with great technical ability and vision. He’s also notable for being a free-kick specialist. He’s yet to add consistency to his game, but seems to be enjoying himself in the ‘liberal attacking environment’ that Lucescu has cultivated at Donestsk. This season Costa has slotted home 8 goals in 23 appearances – not bad for a winger.

3. Miralem Pjanić:

A number of players on this list exemplify a great technical ability – none more so than Bosnian born Miralem Pjanić. When he joined Lyon in 2008 he was considered a future replacement for the aging Juninho. He has since found his niche as an old-style playmaker, who combines good vision and passing ability with tricky feet. He opted to pursue an international career with his birth country Bosnia and Herzegovina, for whom he has put in a number of eye-catching performances. Still just 20-years-old, Pjanić is another player to keep an eye on.

Blessed with youth and a great name, 19-year-old Hazard currently plays for Lille in Ligue 1. He’s known for his virtuoso performances out on the wing and in attacking midfield positions. He has speed, bundles of creativity and a technical ability that players many years his senior will envy. It’s a sign of this boy’s talent that he’s the only player to have picked up the UNFP Young Player of the Year award twice. When you consider that this award has previously gone to the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Robert Pirès and Thierry Henry, you begin to understand what the fuss is all about.

1. Alexis Sánchez:

“El Nino Maravilla” – the Wonder Boy, is a Chilean winger, or attacking midfielder currently plying his trade for Udinese. He has incredible dribbling ability in combination with his explosive pace and tricky feet. He can operate on either wing and is a wonderful crosser of the ball. The only thing that might prevent him from becoming a huge Premier League star would be a need to adapt to the physicality and toughness of the EPL. He’ll also need to be a little more clinical (having scored just 8 goals in 64 appearances for Udinese) but these defects have not stopped a number of teams showing their interest in the talented young player.

I could be managing England, says Mourinho

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has revealed he turned down an opportunity to coach England’s national team. The Portuguese tactician said he was interested in the job and could have signed up for the role, but he decided that a stay in club management would better suit his persona.

“I was hours away – I almost signed up for the English national side,” Mourinho told French sports daily L’Equipe, also going on to claim he could have moved to Paris Saint-Germain.

“But at the last moment I began thinking, ‘I am going to coach a national side, there will be one match a month and the rest of the time I will be in my office or supervising matches. And then to have to wait until the summer to compete in a European Championship or a World Cup?’. No, it wasn’t for me.”

“So at the last moment I pulled back, preferring to wait for the right job to come along, a good club, a challenge that could motivate me. That was Inter.”

Mourinho left his post at English Premier League club Chelsea in September 2007 – just two months before then-England manager Steve McClaren was sacked.

While the 48-year-old passed up the opportunity to lead England – a nation which he has publicly expressed a desire to return to at club level since leaving the Blues – Mourinho said the chance to move to the Serie A with Inter Milan had been a welcome one.

“When I left Chelsea, the first month was fantastic. I went to Africa, to Japan, I did tons of things I had not been able to do,” he said.

“The second month was also good, but from the third onwards it was horrible, just awful.”

Mourinho signed with Inter in June 2008 and won the Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League titles before switching to the La Liga powerhouse for the 2010/11 season.

Chelsea to give Manchester United the Blues?

Tonight Manchester United and Chelsea go head-to-head at Old Trafford in the second leg of the quarter finals of the Champions League. Sir Alex Ferguson’s men have the advantage thanks to a Wayne Rooney strike at Stamford Bridge and unsurprisingly Man United are odds on to progress to the semi’s and a likely tie with Schalke. However, can Carlo Ancelotti’s men give Man Utd the Blues and will a certain Spanish striker finally find his goal scoring boots?

It would be fair to say that Fernando Torres hasn’t had the best of starts at his new club and Torres is 3/10 to continue his drought and 5/6 to be substituted against Man United. bet365 spokesman Steve Freeth says “The introduction of Yossi Benayoun seemed to give Torres a lift on Saturday, but he still wasted a number of chances. These days we’re odds-on about the Spaniard firing a blank as opposed to a few seasons ago when he was scoring for fun.”

However, this could be the match where Torres makes his mark in a Chelsea shirt. Torres is 4/1 to outscore Wayne Rooney, which would be quite a feat considering the form of the two strikers right now. A more sensible bet might be for Fernando Torres not to score a Premier League goal for Chelsea this season, with odds of 5/1 available on that scenario.

[bet_365 type='generic' size='468' af_code='365_061609']

Other than Torres’ form or lack of it, the major talking point to come out of the first leg was Chelsea not being given a late penalty when Ramires was fouled by Patrice Evra. Added to John Terry’s penalty miss in a certain Champions League final, Chelsea fans will feel that Manchester United and penalties aren’t a great combination.

bet365 are 6/1 about Chelsea getting a spot-kick at Old Trafford in the return leg and 33/1 about Ancelotti’s side winning on penalties. Steve Freeth says “Fergie had a penalty decision go his way on Wednesday and Chelsea fans won’t need reminding about Moscow 2008.” Given the amount of penalties awarded to away teams at Old Trafford over the years, this might be a market to steer clear of.
