HYS: Will Man City activate £50m Iheanacho buyback?

Kelechi Iheanacho is on the verge of signing for Leicester City but according to reports from The Telegraph, Manchester City have insisted on having a £50million buyback clause included in the deal.

With the long-standing loan system struggling to deliver results, buybacks looks set to become a recurring trend amongst the Premier League’s top clubs, who accept their young players must leave to find first-team football but also want the option of bringing the back later down the line without paying through the nose.

At the age of 20, the ten-cap Nigerian international has already amassed an impressive twelve Premier League goals despite starting just twelve times in the top flight for the Etihad Stadium outfit.

Indeed, Iheanacho appears to have a bright future ahead of him and Leicester City can provide the solid platform he needs to fulfil his potential.

So, Manchester City fans, gaze into your crystal ball and answer this question – will the Citizens activate Iheanacho’s buyback clause at some point over the next five years? Let us know by voting below…

Chelsea fans can’t wait to see the debut of Tiemoue Bakayoko vs Spurs

It’s not long before English Premier League champions Chelsea and last season’s runners-up Tottenham Hotspur go head-to-head in a massive clash at Wembley Stadium.

The fixture is by far the biggest of the weekend and both sets of supporters are hopeful they can pick up a big result and deliver the first big blow of another potential title race.

Antonio Conte has named his starting eleven and has made a massive decision in the middle of the park.

Having undergone knee surgery at the end of last season, Tiemoue Bakayoko has not yet made his Chelsea debut but Conte is confident enough about his fitness to start him at Wembley.

Is it a big risk or a stroke of genius? There’s no doubting his ability, he shone for Monaco last term, but having not had a run of games to get up full fitness, it’s a move that has the potential backfire.

Regardless of how it can be viewed, Chelsea fans are hugely excited to see their new man in action and took to Twitter to share their thoughts on his selection…

Aston Villa fans slam James Bree after Brentford draw

Aston Villa’s disappointing start to the Championship season continued as they were held to a goalless draw by Brentford at Villa Park on Saturday, and Villa fans were particularly unimpressed with the performance of James Bree at right-back.

Steve Bruce’s men came into the fixture against the Bees having bounced back from taking one point from a possible nine at the start of the campaign by taking four from their previous two games, but they struggled to make much of an impact against Dean Smith’s side.

The Midlands outfit had just one shot on target all afternoon and in truth they had goalkeeper Sam Johnstone to thank for helping them get a point.

Bree had been handed a rare start at right-back by Bruce with Alan Hutton missing out on a place in the squad having only just returned from injury, but the 19-year-old perhaps didn’t make the most of the opportunity he had been given.

Aston Villa supporters were quick to have their say on his showing via social media, with some describing his performance as a “joke” and others saying he simply “isn’t good enough”.

Newcastle United midfielder Shelvey suffers injury scare

Jonjo Shelvey put in an impressive performance during last weekend’s 1-1 draw with his former club Liverpool, but it has emerged that the Newcastle United midfielder has suffered an injury scare.

The Chronicle reports that the 25-year-old broke a finger during a training session at the Magpies’ Benton Training Centre on Thursday.

Despite the blow, the publication states that Shelvey is expected to be available for Newcastle’s Premier League match against Southampton next week.

The Chronicle goes on to say that the midfielder has fractured the fifth metacarpal on his left hand, but with the help of a cast, he should be able to carry on with his normal training regime.

The Premier League does not allow players to compete wearing a plaster cast, but a lightweight version is permitted in the rules.

Shelvey, who was not included in Gareth Southgate’s recent England squad, has another nine days to be ready for Newcastle’s trip to the South Coast.

Tottenham fans react as Real Madrid line up player exchange offer for Kane

According to reports by Spanish media outlet Diario Gol, Real Madrid are ready to offer three of their stars in exchange for Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, and Spurs fans have been quick to have their say on the rumour.

Diario Gol reports that Real president Florentino Perez is willing to give the north London outfit Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and Luka Modric in order to reduce Tottenham’s asking price of €200m (approximately £179m) for the prolific centre-forward.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed an outstanding start to the season and despite failing to find the net in August, he scored 11 goals in just six appearances for his club in September, while he has also netted four in his last four outings for England.

Tottenham supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on the rumour, and while some said that they “would take it”, others weren’t so keen on the proposed deal and said “chuck in Ronaldo and you’re still £200m short”.

In Focus: Walker could have solved Caixinha’s left flank problem at Rangers

As reported by The Daily Record, Jamie Walker has opened up about his failed summer transfer to Rangers.

What’s the story?

The Walker to Rangers speculation became something of a saga during the recent transfer window, with the Ibrox side still making attempts to sign him on deadline day.

The Record report that he could have been available for a fee of around £600,000.

The player himself has a philosophical view of the situation, believing that if the club really wanted him, they could have signed him. He even reckons that he could win a move next summer that’s bigger than better than heading to Ibrox.

As quoted by The Daily Record, Walker said:

If they really wanted me I think they’d have put down the money. It’s a massive club and if it doesn’t happen, I can still go on to bigger and better things. Rangers aren’t the be-all and end-all. It’s up to me to show what I can do and maybe get something better. In January I might have a few offers. I’ll be a free agent and if I’m playing well enough, there might be a decision to be made.

They aren’t exactly words that are likely to endear him to the Rangers support ahead of any potential Ibrox move for him in January but he is showing ambition and that should be attractive to any football fan.

His future

Walker has a lot of hard work ahead of him this season if he is to win that big move. All the interest in him this summer came off the back of a stellar season in which he scored 15 goals and provided seven assists for his teammates.

So far this term he has failed to live up to that contribution, playing nine times and failing to contribute directly to a single Hearts goal.

He has the talent, but with less than a year left on his contract, he needs to prove he has to motivation and self-determination to make this season another special one, otherwise his desired big move may not happen.

A role at Rangers

Rangers could definitely do with his services. Pedro Caixinha’s side have struggled to find a consistent performer on the left flank this season and Jamie Walker could’ve filled that role and provided a big threat to opposition teams.

Whether they’ll be in the market for him in January remains to be seen. Regardless, fans will be hoping they don’t come to regret missing out on him this summer.

West Ham fans unhappy as Declan Rice to be left out against Crystal Palace

According to the reliable @ExWHUemployee on Twitter, West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic is set to drop Declan Rice from the squad for the Premier League match against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday, and Irons fans are not happy.

The 18-year-old started alongside Cheikhou Kouyate and Angelo Ogbonna in a three-man defence against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, as the Hammers came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 and advance to the quarter-finals of the competitions.

The teenager certainly put in a decent performance on the big stage considering his youthful years, but it doesn’t seem to have been enough for him to warrant keeping his place in the starting XI, or even the squad.

West Ham supporters were quick to have their say on the rumour that he is set to miss out via social media, and while some described manager Slaven Bilic as “the confidence killer”, others were “disgusted”.

The Word: Andre Schurrle’s quotes point to a big Jose Mourinho mistake

Life is hard when you play for Jose Mourinho.

Is it any harder than playing for Jurgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola, whose players are asked to almost run themselves into the ground at times when their teams are forced to press the opposition relentlessly when Manchester City or Liverpool aren’t in possession? And is it any harder than playing for Antonio Conte, who demands intense concentration and tactical discipline at all times?

The difference is that Mourinho seems to believe that life is hard, too. Like a man who’s been burned too many times before, the Manchester United manager looks to have a survival of the fittest approach to football. Especially this season, where his side appears to be made up of the biggest players his scouts could find who have the requisite quality to play Champions League football and compete at the top of the Premier League. Although Mourinho’s philosophy has often seemed to boil down to something like ‘a good big’un is better than a good little’un’, this season seems to take that to an extreme.

He’s always been ruthless, and his teams have possessed the same quality, too: Mourinho sides know how to keep a clean sheet and take their chances at the other end, but on that score, it means results can be on edge.

He’s also ruthless with his players, though. As Andre Schurrle remarked when he left Chelsea, Mourinho showed him “how hard life can be as a footballer.”

It doesn’t sound like a compliment, or a respectful comment designed to thank a former boss for a valuable life lesson given with the best interests of the player in mind. Schurrle, it would appear, doesn’t feel like he was given the fairest of shakes at Chelsea by Mourinho.

“Mourinho showed me how hard life can be as a footballer. If you had one bad game, you would be out of the team.” – Andre Schurrle on being forced out at Chelsea.

It’s a familiar story. Chelsea are gaining a reputation as serial offenders when it comes to hoarding young players and failing to give them a chance in the first team. Modern football is a results business and the danger of falling out of the Champions League is real, as the Blues know all too well. But there’s also something which feels that bit more commercial about Chelsea’s policy, designed to make a profit selling young players to other clubs rather than actually develop them for their own first teams.

Schurrle wasn’t quite one of those players. He was young and promising when he came to Chelsea, but had also four full seasons of top level football under his belt in the Bundesliga and was even a full German international before signing for the west London club from Bayer Leverkusen.

And yet he credits – if that is the right word – Mourinho with showing him the grittier side of the game, and how hard life is when you play for a manager whose whole philosophy appears to be to make life hard for everyone: his own players as much as his opponents.

That’s something he’ll have to be careful of this season.

The longer Manchester City continue to win football games by blowing the opposition away, the starker the contrast with his own side. The fact they’re neighbours and city rivals draws the obvious comparisons, but for much of the opening weeks of the season, it seemed as though we’d be treated to a Manchester shoot-out for the title.

A battle between the two old gunslingers Pep and Jose, with their very different approaches to the game, seems inevitable. Now it’s further away, but if City can keep this up all season, even the hardest of United fans would have to take their hat off to Guardiola’s team. There will be a chance for Mourinho to come back into it, in other words.

It’s all about taking it. But when, as a professional football, you are asked to prioritise grit and steel over skill and flair, you can see how the daily joy of being a professional footballer and playing the sport you love for a living turns into a daily grind of denying yourself your more boyish, inner-childlike pleasures.

For every successful manager, player and team, it’s always been about hard work. But the strange thing about hard work is that when you’re doing it right, it’s doesn’t always have to feel like hard work. And by the end of the season, maybe more of Mourinho’s players will feel like Schurrle: always on edge, and finding that life is harder than initially thought.
