Chelsea transfer chiefs could actually be in the market for another striker after sealing a £35 million deal for Ajax defender Jorrel Hato earlier this week, despite already bringing in Liam Delap and Joao Pedro this window.

Hato has put pen to paper on a seven-year contract after completing a medical on Friday, with the Dutchman set to provide cover for Marc Cucurella at left-back whilst also potentially reinforcing Enzo Maresca’s central defensive options from time to time.
The 19-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge after making over 110 senior appearances for Ajax, despite his young age, which includes experience in European competitions as well.
Whilst Hato began his career predominantly at centre-half, Chelsea agree with former Ajax manager, Francesco Farioli, that his future is in the full-back area.
“Jorrel started as a central defender, but under our guidance he became a full-back at national team level,” said Farioli, via Ben Jacobs on X.
“This kind of transformation stems from a detailed analysis of his technical and physical attributes. “Hato has excellent technical skills, he’s physically strong and fast, and he’s good in one-on-one situations. While he may not have a natural defensive instinct as a centre-back, his experience in that role gave him good game-reading abilities.
“Ajax still viewed him as a central defender, but I believe that at the very highest levels, like the Premier League, a player who stands at 1.81m will struggle to play centrally, especially in physically demanding duels.
Jorrel Hato
“In my opinion, his future lies more as a left-back, a position that requires both attacking and defensive qualities and fits better with his characteristics.”
Chelsea’s immediate next transfer plans will most likely revolve around their attack.
RB Leipzig playmaker Xavi Simons remains in talks to join Chelsea, with the Netherlands international opting out of training on Friday and removing Leipzig from his Instagram bio as he pushes for a Stamford Bridge move (Fabrizio Romano).
Chelsea are also expected to bid for Man United winger Alejandro Garnacho in what would be a separate deal to Simons, with Strasbourg striker Emmanuel Emegha remaining on BlueCo’s radar too.
Chelsea looking to strike "early" cut-price deal for Emmanuel Emegha
Reports suggest that Chelsea could still sign another striker if Nicolas Jackson leaves, and Emegha is chief among their targets after an excellent season in Ligue 1.

The 22-year-old was clocked as the fastest player in France’s top flight last season with Chelsea looking to strike an “early deal” for Emegha, anticipating that his price tag could soar to £44 million-plus in the next few years if they don’t act now.
That is according to Telegraph journalist Matt Law, who told the London is Blue podcast this week that Chelsea aim to sign the Dutchman for a cheaper fee this
window.
Emanuel Emegha
“I was told by someone who works around the Strasbourg end of things, that they believe that one day this guy could be a €50m-plus striker,” said Law.
“I think maybe they’re looking to do an early deal for him, to get him into a Chelsea player, is looking at that fair market value.
“Because if you do it now, you can probably do it around, I’m guessing here. I don’t know that this is a figure, but say €25m (£22m). If you do it another year down the line, you might be looking at a fair market value of around €40m (£35m).”
Emegha bagged 14 Ligue 1 goals last term, alongside being Ligue 1’s most explosive player, but it is unclear what Chelsea’s plans will be for him, or whether he’d be thrust straight into Maresca’s first team.
Leeds United have less than a week to prepare for their opening game of the 2025/26 Premier League campaign against Everton at Elland Road next Monday.
Despite how close the first game is, head coach Daniel Farke is not satisfied with the work that has been done on the attacking areas in the summer transfer window.
The former Norwich City boss clearly wants to bring in more attackers to bolster his options at the top end of the pitch before the deadline at the start of September.
Football Insider reported in May that the Whites are not planning to build their attack around Joel Piroe, despite the fact that he won the Golden Boot in the Championship with 19 goals.
Joel Piroe
Leeds are in the market, as Farke confirmed, to bring in reinforcements in the final third, and a new centre-forward to compete with the Dutch marksman is on the agenda.
The Championship champions will be hoping that they can find their next successful Premier League number nine, following in the footsteps of the likes of Mark Viduka and Tony Yeboah.
Leeds United's all-time top scorers in the Premier League
The Whites have not been in the top-flight for a couple of years since they were relegated under Sam Allardyce at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.
From that run of three successive seasons in the Premier League, following their promotion under Marcelo Bielsa in 2020, only one player managed to break into the club’s top ten goalscorers in the history of the division – Rodrigo.
The Spaniard scored 26 goals in 88 matches in three seasons in West Yorkshire after his move from Valencia in the summer of 2020, outscoring Raphinha in that period in the club’s history.

As you can see in the table above, no player has scored more Premier League goals for Leeds than Viduka, who was a battering ram up front for the Whites during his time in West Yorkshire.
The Australian centre-forward mixed physical and technical qualities to be an outstanding number nine for the Whites, as Guardian writer Rob Smyth once noted that he had an “interesting mix of styles” due to his strength and ability on the ball.
Leeds are now being linked with a potential move for a player who could arrive at Elland Road with a similar style of play to the legendary striker.
Leeds have growing interest in Championship star
According to TEAMtalk, Leeds United are one of the teams with a growing interest in a deal for Norwich City centre-forward Josh Sargent before the end of the summer transfer window.
The report claims that both the Whites and Burnley are keen to snap up the USA international, who would like to remain in England, to bolster their options at the top end of the pitch.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
It adds that the 25-year-old number nine has already turned down the chance to sign for Wolfsburg after the German club agreed a £21m deal with the Canaries, which shows the kind of money that it will take to do a deal.
TEAMtalk reveals that Farke is a big fan of the American striker, whom he signed for Norwich from Werder Bremen in 2021, and would like to reunite with him this summer.
JoshSargentof the U.S. reacts
However, the outlet claims that Leeds and Burnley are not currently willing to pay the asking price for the Championship star, and it remains to be seen where this transfer saga will go next.
Why Leeds should sign Josh Sargent
The natural reaction to this news from supporters may not be the most positive, given that Sargent struggled in the Premier League when he last played there in the 2021/22 campaign. However, he was a 21-year-old playing in England for the first time in a team that got relegated from the division, and the majority of his appearances for Norwich came on the right wing, rather than as a centre-forward.
Since their relegation to the Championship, and Teemu Pukki’s exit from Carrow Road, the USA international has had the chance to establish himself in his favoured position, as a striker, and caught the eye with his excellent performances.
Sargent won Norwich’s Player of the Season award last season, thanks to the goals and assists shown in the video above, and has scored 32 Championship goals since the start of the 2023/24 campaign, as per Sofascore.
That is why supporters should not be put off by a haul of two goals in 26 matches in the Premier League in difficult circumstances over three years ago, as his form since then shows that he has the potential to be Viduka 2.0 for Leeds.
Norwich City'sJoshSargentcelebrates scoring their first goal
This is not to say that Sargent is guaranteed to score goals as frequently as Viduka did for the Whites, given his exceptional record, but he has the all-round game and finishing capabilities to be Farke’s own version of the striker.

As you can see in the table above, the £21m-rated forward has developed into a talismanic figure for the Canaries in the number nine position, ranking highly among his positional peers in a host of metrics in and out of possession.
Sargent, who Tony Pulis described as “relentless”, has the physical qualities to win duels on the deck and in the air to be a target man for his side, much like Viduka was for Leeds, whilst also being a prolific scorer and creator in front of goal.
These statistics suggest that the potential is there for him to be a Viduka-esque figure up front for Leeds because he is a technically secure target man who finishes chances clinically and creates for others.

It is now down for Sargent, if the Whites strike a deal for him, to show that he can translate that to the Premier League when played in his preferred position at that level.

ECB chief executive confident that process can be game-changing if money is spent well

ECB chief executive Richard Gould is confident the Hundred will generate enough money to future-proof the County game for the next “20 to 25 years” after multiple bids were tabled for each of the eight teams earlier this week, in the second round of the equity sales process.Having received over 100 bids from 35 parties in the first round, a broad spectrum of interested buyers remains. They are understood to include eight of the 10 IPL team owners and co-owners, plus US-based sports investors and private equity.Gould confirmed most investors have put in multiple bids. Once it is determined which investors best match the interest of one of the eight host teams, the third and final stage will see clubs and counties decide upon their two preferred partners for a joint venture. The ECB remain increasingly optimistic that they will better their initially stated aim of raising a minimum of £350 million, not least with competition between investors already evident. In September, Vikram Banerjee, tasked with selling off stakes in the Hundred as ECB director of business operations, stated that the final process could be delayed if the right bids and suitors are not found for all teams. Three months and two stages on, Gould says it is “more likely” the 49 percent stakes on offer for each of the eight teams will be sold first time. Host counties can then decide how much of their gifted 51 percent they wish to part with.Related

Most of the money raised from those 49 percent stakes is set to be split among the 18 counties and MCC, with 10 percent portioned off for the recreational game. This means that county game is in line for a massive windfall, But Gould insists it will need to be spent wisely.”My hope is that this will recapitalise the county game for the next 20-25 years, if that money is used really well,” he said in Hamilton, on the eve of the third Test between England and New Zealand.”We’re not counting our chickens yet, but the aim of this is to raise significant investment that is going to go into the game. One of the things that has been attracting the investors is the money they’d be putting in is going to develop the game. A very significant chunk is going into the recreational game, even more is going into the professional game and that is split between the hosts and non-hosts.”The professional counties have been very keen to explain to us that they want guard rails in place. Those are likely to focus on the level of debt a club has, the level of reserves a club should have and also when they are making investments, making sure those are investments for the good of the game – providing financial return or in things like the player pathway.”

There would have been no complaints from the Liverpool squad that it was 16-year-old Rio Nguomha who took the limelight after an incredible victory over Newcastle United on Monday night.
Liverpool are two matches into their Premier League title defence, and have blown two-goal leads in both fixtures yet somehow clawed back victory at the eleventh hour.
Looking at the table, you’d call it a flawless start from Arne Slot’s side, six points from six as they push to retain a top-flight title for the first time since 1983/84.
However, the thrill of successive victories in dramatic fashion has papered over the cracks that Liverpool’s unbalanced set-up has shown since the summer break.
Slot proved himself and then some last season, and there’s every confidence that the wrinkles will be ironed out.
However, certain players look like shadows of their former selves at the moment, and no one more so than Ibrahima Konate in defence.
Ibrahima Konate's performance vs Newcastle
Konate left plenty to be desired as Liverpool scraped past Bournemouth in their Premier League opener, courtesy of a late Federico Chiesa winner from the bench.
Against Newcastle, he didn’t fare any better, having been criticised for his “poor” performances to start the campaign by Reds correspondent Lewis Steele.
On the face of it, Konate didn’t look to have done too badly on Tyneside, winning four of his six contested duels and maintaining accuracy in possession.
However, the eye test revealed a different story. The Liverpool Echo’s Ian Doyle branded the France international with a 4/10 match score, drawing attention to his unconvincing defending and his fault in missing his header in the second half, allowing William Osula to restore parity for the hosts.
Most of a Liverpool persuasion will be aware that Konate is being chased by Real Madrid, and that he is into the final year of his contract at Anfield.
Regardless of the outcome of his situation (which is starting to evoke unwanted Trent-themed memories), Liverpool need to sign a central defender before the transfer window closes.
Liverpool in talks for Konate upgrade
According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Liverpool remain in talks to sign Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, who, like Konate, has entered the final year of his contract.
Crystal Palace'sMarcGuehilooks dejected.
Guehi, 25, has been one of Liverpool’s main transfer targets all summer, and it’s looking likely that an official approach will materialise in the coming days.
The main sticking point centres around valuation: Guehi will be a free agent at the end of the season, and so Liverpool consider Palace chairman Steve Parish’s £40m asking price to be exorbitant.
Transfer Focus
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
FSG seek something closer to £35m, though they will be aware that Manchester City are mulling over a move too.
Why Marc Guehi would start for Liverpool
Guehi, 25, has captained Crystal Palace to their first two trophies, beating Manchester City to win the FA Cup in May and following up that triumph with a penalty shootout win over Liverpool in the Community Shield earlier this month.
CrystalPalace's Marc Guehi lifts the trophy as hecelebrates with teammates after winning the FA Community Shield
He has spent four years at Selhurst Park, having joined the south Londoners from Chelsea after graduating from the infamous Cobham academy and enjoying a successful loan spell with Swansea City in the Championship.
Now, he is one of the most refined and respected centre-halves in the Premier League, and there’s every chance that he would arrive on Merseyside and instantly take Konate’s place in Liverpool’s starting line-up, especially when considering how the Les Bleus man is playing right now.

Konate was in fine fettle indeed last season, producing his personal best campaign on Merseyside both in terms of fitness and performance from August to May.
But you could argue Guehi performed at a similar level for a side battling far lower down the divisional ladder, proving more creative with his passing and more active in defensive phases.
Described as a “monster in defence” by Palace reporter Bobby Manzi, Guehi’s technical quality is further outlined by his ranking among the top 2% of centre-backs across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for through balls and the top 11% for shot-creating actions per 90, as revealed by data-led platform FBref.
And if that isn’t enough to sell you on his quality, just take a look for the man himself in action, carrying and controlling the ball with the deftness of a midfield maestro.
Perhaps the most exciting part is that the Eagles defender has yet to make his move to the highest level, and could raise his game several levels by linking up with Slot’s squad, by allowing himself to be inculcated into Slot’s tactical knowledge.
Analyst Ben Mattinson remarked in the past that the £50k-per-week Guehi is “one of those versatile centre-backs who can play both sides equally as comfortably.”
Crystal Palace's MarcGuehireacts.
With that in mind, it seems like he could be stepping into Virgil van Dijk’s boots as the indomitable captain creeps closer toward the final stretch of his Liverpool career.
However, when considering how Konate is playing at the moment, it’s more likely that Guehi will be housed on the right side of the central defence, leaving the Frenchman languishing on the bench.

On a blustery day at the Basin Reserve, the home side’s understanding of the conditions came to the fore

On a blustery Wellington day, an Antarctic chill blowing in with the southerly, New Zealand’s home advantage may have played a role in their victory. This is what Matt Henry thinks, after his 4 for 19 led the demolition of Sri Lanka’s batting order. Bowling first on a green pitch, New Zealand rolled Sri Lanka over for 178. And yet Sri Lanka’s seamers were unable to exert similar pressure, New Zealand winning by nine wickets, inside 27 overs.Though this is midsummer in New Zealand, the temperature was around 15 degrees Celsius in the morning. And as almost always at the Basin Reserve, there was an end at which the bowlers had to work against a substantial wind. New Zealand understood how to harness these conditions, Henry said.Related
Henry, Young give New Zealand thumping win in series opener
“It’s probably about understanding ends,” he said. “The wind plays a huge part here at the Basin. That’s the home advantage – knowing what it looks like to attack from both ends, and using the bounce that’s usually available here as well. Thankfully we were able to force some errors and take some wickets.”The first ten overs, at the end of which New Zealand had Sri Lanka 23 for 4, were the definitive period of this match. Henry claimed the first wicket – that of Pathum Nissanka – and Jacob Duffy and Nathan Smith also took wickets in their first spells.Jacob Duffy knocked over Kusal Mendis in the first powerplay•Getty Images
“The way we started with the ball, we were able to create pressure at both ends, and take wickets throughout, which is our key objective as a bowling group,” Henry said. “Any time you get the new ball you want to have an impact on the game. It’s nice to have that success, but you don’t have that without the guys doing the job at the other end as well. Starting with the new ball down-breeze, the way Duffy started and Smith as well – that’s how chances come as well. I thought it was a great team performance.”New Zealand also produced an outstanding fielding effort, with Mark Chapman in particular electric in the point region. The highlight of the fielding performance, however, was Mitchell Santner swooping on a ball from cover to fire in an underhand throw as he dived forward, to hit the single stump he had to aim at. This ran out Kamindu Mendis in the 10th over.”We pride ourselves on our fielding,” Henry said. “With these windy conditions, you can get lost out there. The engagement was brilliant, and we were taking our chances when they came. To have a run-out in the first 10 overs through Mitch Santner, with a great bit of fielding, it really puts a team under pressure and puts momentum in your favour. Little moments like that have a huge impact on the game.”Henry himself has entered a new phase in his career – one in which he makes all three New Zealand teams. For much of the last 10 years, he’d been in the shadows of the likes of Tim Southee, Trent Boult, and Neil Wagner. With all three now retired, Henry is the senior-most bowler around.”It’s great to have that continuity. Playing for New Zealand in all forms is something I’ve wanted to do. I’ve been involved with this group for 10 years now. I love playing for New Zealand.”And though playing all three formats could pose fresh challenges to a fast bowler’s body, Henry is unconcerned.”That’s the beauty of the strength and conditioning coach, who does a great job. We play all year round now, and it’s something that I’ve always done. I’ve played a lot of county cricket as well. It’s probably about understanding your body and how to stay fresh.”
