Godfrey upgrade: Ipswich loanee has seen his value rise 3852% after leaving

With no Premier League victories coming their way during the early stages of 2025, Ipswich Town do look set to fall immediately back down to the Championship.

The Tractor Boys haven’t completely disgraced themselves with memorable wins against Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea at least sticking out, but there just doesn’t seem to be enough in the tank at Portman Road to maintain their top-flight position past this fleeting visit.

One factor that has arguably hindered Ipswich has been their hit-and-miss approach in the transfer market, with a number of loanees entering the building going on to have contrasting fortunes in Suffolk.

One of which is January arrival, Ben Godfrey.

Where Ben Godfrey ranks among Ipswich's loan signings

It has to be said that the Tractor Boys have at least been proactive in the market to try and give themselves a fighting chance at survival, regardless if many of their temporary signings haven’t been overwhelming success stories.

The additions of Jens Cajuste and Kalvin Phillips have boosted the underdogs somewhat, with Cajuste even picking up two Player of the Month accolades for November and December, off the back of the Napoli loanee winning an encouraging 3.3 duels per league clash.

Moreover, the ex-Leeds United man has also shown flashes of his class by winning 3.9 duels per match but it hasn’t been smooth sailing for every loan recruit.

Indeed, Julio Enciso has found his stint in Suffolk so far to be mainly injury-ridden, whilst the aforementioned Godfrey has largely found his spell away from Atalanta to be crushing for his confidence when looking at the sheer number of goals he’s leaked lining up in defence.

Looking at the numbers, Godfrey has looked out of his depth on his return to English soil, further leaving Ipswich full of anguish that they didn’t sign anyone better over the winter.

As it happens, a fellow full-back is now starring after a loan spell at Portman Road many years ago.

Ipswich loan star is now a Ben Godfrey upgrade

As is the case with a large quantity of EFL clubs, the loan market proves to be invaluable in gifting your side some additional star quality on a short-term basis.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.

When Ipswich were routinely competing towards the top end of the second tier, Portman Road was home to many a standout loanee, including ex-Arsenal youngster Ainsley Maitland-Niles during the 2015/16 season.

At the time, Maitland-Niles was just a wide-eyed product of the illustrious Gunners academy eager to prove a point in the senior game, rated at just £210k, according to Transfermarkt.

Fast forward past his formative time in Suffolk and Maitland-Niles would eventually go on to make a name for himself, with the versatile presence picking up an impressive two goals and three assists from 32 appearances when regularly lining up as a right winger.

The five-time senior England international had to spread his wings away from Arsenal to fully show off his best game, however, but his current spell at Olympique de Lyonnais is definitely playing to his strengths as an attack-oriented right-back.

As a consequence of a handful of England caps and his performances in Ligue 1, his transfer valuation has gone all the way up to £8m during his time with the French giants, representing a major 3852% increase from his once meagre price-tag.

Hailed as “tremendous” by football journalist Rob Sills during a different loan adventure out at Southampton, there must be some woe on Ipswich’s end that they can’t call upon Maitland-Niles in the right-back spot now when you take into account his six clean sheets for Lyon this campaign among other glowing numbers.

Capable of playing in midfield too, he could really have given McKenna a useful utility body, but the relegation-threatened side will simply have to make do with what they’ve got.

Steve Smith sets out to debunk Ashes link in Sussex stint

“You’ve got to remember I’ve played a lot of cricket in England before” Aussie batter says

Vithushan Ehantharajah02-May-2023Steven Smith has landed. At another time, the arrival of an Australian of such stock – vice-captain, no less – ahead of an Ashes summer might have had more fanfare. Press greeting him off the plane, photographers snapping him as he pushes a trolley through immigration, bleary-eyed in national team garb.Instead, the 33-year-old arrived in the UK over the weekend with little fuss ahead of a three-game stint with Sussex. Australia are coming, but not just yet and certainly not all at the same time. Nevertheless, as Smith was officially unveiled in the Pavilion at Hove, decked in the club’s disarming baby blue-trimmed stash while the pigeons fed on the freshly laid seed on the outfield, the Ashes cogs finally began turning. This will be his first taste of the County Championship. A previous dalliance in the shires came in 2010 via a short stint for Worcestershire in the T20 Blast. As it happens, they will be his first opponents before taking on Leicestershire and then Glamorgan, his only match at “home”.Older and wiser, he is willing to make himself as useful as possible to a young squad slowly turning their fortunes around, with runs on the field and advice off it. Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace believes as much, going further to state the county and the domestic system as a whole will benefit from Smith’s time in the system. The latter carried particular emphasis.Related

England could give Australia 'a good hiding' – Ollie Robinson

Ollie Robinson keen to 'put right' Ashes record

Farbrace certainly does not subscribe to the view that giving a rival batter valuable preparation ahead of the Ashes is akin to professional treason. “I’ve got good friends who think that we’re helping Australia to win the Ashes,” he said with a smile “We’re not at all.”Nor does he resent some of the talk that he, chief executive Rob Andrew and Sussex are hurting English cricket. That there is talk at all is only a good thing.”Sport’s all about opinions,” said Farbrace. “That’s what we love about the game. I’ve got very strong views on Chelsea. The fact that people are talking about Championship cricket is only good for the game.”It was down to Smith to respectfully cut through the noise. “I’ve seen a lot of talk about getting used to conditions,” he said. “But you’ve got to remember I’ve played a lot of cricket in England before. So conditions aren’t really new to me, if that makes sense.” It certainly does: a record of 16 Tests, six centuries and an average of 59.55 over here suggests he is overly familiar with these conditions.Having chosen to skip the IPL by not entering the auction, Smith has spent the last few weeks resting in Australia. That downtime has meant plenty of time to keep across bold proclamations on the other side of the world.Following Cricket Australia’s reposting of Stuart Broad’s quotes that he’d enjoy seeing Smith attempt to mimic England’s attacking style of play and “sky one to mid off early doors”, the England quick took to the comments section to make a clarification. “To be fair I love it any time we get him out, in any variety, cause he averages 60,” wrote Broad. Smith, thumbs idle, saw an opportunity and replied: “hopefully 65 by the end of the summer”.”I had some friendly banter with Broady as you’ve probably all see the other day,” Smith said of the exchange. What, then, did he make of Broad’s assertion that the 2021-22 series, which England lost 4-0, was a “void series” because of the Covid restrictions in place?”I mean, it was a little odd,” said Smith. “We were all there and playing so it was a little bit odd, you know? He’s a nice guy and loves throwing out some good banter so it’s all part of it.”It certainly wasn’t ideal scenarios. But the whole world was going through it and we were in the middle of a pandemic, so we couldn’t really complain too much. We were actually out there being able to do what we love, so I don’t really have much more to add to it.”Steve Smith checks out his home away from home at Hove•Getty Images

No doubt there will be more talk to come. For now, Smith is gearing towards a return to competitive action, which began on Monday with a session with the 2nd XI before batting with the first team on Tuesday morning. He did so in a net alongside Cheteshwar Pujara, his captain for these three matches before becoming an opponent for the WTC Final in a month’s time at The Oval. With Pujara batting three, Smith will slot in at five. “I haven’t been that low for a while,” he said. “I’ve played a lot against Pujara, watched him churn out plenty of runs. So it’d be nice to spend some time in the middle with him and put a few good partnerships together.”Another intriguing team-mate dynamic to negotiate will be lining up alongside England seamer Ollie Robinson. Robinson has been bullish about the hosts’ giving Australia “a good hiding”. He also flipped the narrative that Smith at Sussex is to the detriment to the national side by suggesting it could be good to “get a better look at him in the nets”. Robinson even suggested he might choose not to bowl at Smith to keep his cards close to his chest. He ended up doing so on Monday, to good effect.”Ollie bowled to me yesterday actually,” revealed Smith. “I left one third ball and he knocked me over. So that wasn’t ideal.”But I was impressed with him actually when he was out in Australia. I thought he had some really good skills. He’s quite tall, he hit some good areas and looks like he’s got better since then. So I’m looking forward to playing with him this week.”Smith stated it also allows him to run the rule over Robinson, which touches on an aspect lost in framing all this. Despite all Smith has achieved so far, this summer is one of huge opportunityBecoming a World Test Champion carries a modern-day gravitas. The traditional pull of the Ashes is a little greater this time given it will be Smith’s fourth tour of England and he has yet to win one. Australia’s last victory on these shores came in 2001.They were close in 2019, losing the last Test at the Oval to draw two-all. Retaining the urn made not winning four years ago academic to a point, though Smith’s exploits in that series lifted him to legendary status. He struck 774 runs at an average of 110.57 from just four matches after missing the Headingley Test after he was felled by a Jofra Archer bouncer at Lord’s. As much as that series was cathartic for Smith after returning from a year-long ban for his part in 2018’s sandpaper controversy, the result is something he is keen to rectify. Ideally, while posting similar numbers.”It would be a huge one to tick off the bucket list, I suppose,” said Smith of the prospect of winning in England. “We haven’t been able to do it but we got close last time and were unable to get over the line. It’s certainly something that would be high up on my bucket list and everyone else in the team as well.””I’ve got a lot of fond memories from 2019 and the way I played and I’d love to replicate that and do something similar.”All being well, Smith’s 100th cap will come in the third Test at Headingley. Fitting given it was on his first trip to England in 2013 that he struck the first of 30 centuries, the start of that transformation from awkward leg-spinner to peerless modern batting great. Could this be his final tour?”This will be my fourth (Ashes) tour. Could this be my last? Potentially. I mean, I’m 34 in just under a month. I’m not sure I’ll be back. We’ll see.”

Ex-scout: Andoni Iraola could sign £46m Premier League star for Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur have made Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola their top target to replace Ange Postecoglou, according to reports, and now speculation is already beginning to surround who the tactician could potentially bring in if he’s appointed.

Tottenham identify Andoni Iraola as leading managerial candidate

Postecoglou is under mounting pressure ahead of the conclusion of this Premier League campaign, with the Australian attracting fierce criticism after a dismal 2024/25 season.

52-year-old holds talks with Levy to join Tottenham as "rich offer" readied

The Lilywhites chairman personally met with him yesterday.

ByEmilio Galantini Mar 28, 2025

Spurs are 14th in the league and have lost 15 games in the top flight alone. Only the division’s bottom four sides have tasted defeat on more occasions than the Lilywhites, which makes for very grim reading in the eyes of Postecoglou, who’s sweating over his future in N17.

“They play a high press game, which is probably detrimental to injuries anyway,” said pundit Martin Keown, questioning Postecoglou’s lack of tactical versatility.

“And the two central defenders, they don’t come up and stand sideways on ready to drop – they’re square on and it’s demanding. Van de Ven, the amount of times he’s pulled a hamstring doing that.

“When a manager is just hard-fast, seems stubborn, doesn’t want to adjust to any tactics… there’s got to be more than that to management. I’ve not done it myself so it’s easy sitting here saying it.

“But we do question it because we can’t believe that you don’t adjust.”

His long-term stay at Tottenham is said to be in “serious doubt”, according to The Athletic, who also state that Iraola is the leading candidate to potentially replace Postecoglou.

The 42-year-old has guided Bournemouth through an impressive campaign, despite being hamstrung by their own injury problems, and there is still every chance that they can qualify for Europe.

Some reports have suggested that Tottenham have made contact with Iraola ahead of the summer, so his potential hire is gaining real traction amid doubts surrounding Postecoglou’s position.

Andoni Iraola could sign Justin Kluivert for Tottenham

Now, some pundits are starting to wonder who the Spaniard could bring with him to north London if he does end up stepping into the Tottenham dugout.

Speaking to Tottenham News, the club’s former scout, Bryan King, has claimed that Cherries winger Justin Kluivert could follow Andoni Iraola to N17.

Justin Kluivert for Bournemouth.

The Netherlands international, rumoured to command a price tag of around £46 million, has bagged 12 goals and six assists in the Premier League – marking himself out as a star player – and King believes that Iraola may look to sign Kluivert for Tottenham if he’s appointed.

“If Iraola goes to Spurs, he could bring Kluivert with him,” King said.

“I think that is just common sense. However, if the manager is going, how many players are Bournemouth going to allow him to take? It is all hearsay at the moment. Until we know exactly what is happening with Postecoglou, we can talk all day. However, until a decision is made on Postecoglou, watch this space.”

Sarah Bryce starred with an unbeaten 67 as The Blaze booked their place in the Charlotte Edwards Cup semi-finals after easing past Northern Diamonds at Seat Unique Riverside by six wickets. The visitors required 130 to win after Nadine de Klerk and skipper Kirstie Gordon restricted the Diamonds with a fine bowling performance. Lauren Winfield-Hill top-scored for the hosts, but their score was always under par on a ground with a quick outfield.Bryce took the attack to the Diamonds bowlers, using both power and guile to propel her team ahead of the required rate. She notched her first fifty of the competition and ended the contest unbeaten after scoring six four and three sixes. The Blaze can now prepare for their last four fixture, while Diamonds still have work ahead of them after suffering their first defeat.Diamonds won the toss and elected to bat in the bright sunshine at Chester-le-Street. The Blaze’s opening bowlers made life difficult for Winfield-Hill and Leah Dobson, restricting them to just one run off the first two overs as Grace Ballinger sent down a maiden.Winfield-Hill had trouble timing the ball in the early stages before finding her range in the fifth over, taking de Klerk for two boundaries. Dobson was given a life when she was dropped by Kathryn Bryce for 14 on the boundary, but the visitors still had control of the scoreboard as Diamonds mustered just 26 from the Powerplay.Gordon made the breakthrough as the drop proved costly as Dobson fell for 19. Hollie Armitage offered a semblance of power as she found the rope three times in a bid to up the run rate. Armitage provided the foundation of the innings with Winfield-Hill with a stand worth 47 before the Diamonds skipper was caught on the fence presenting Gordon with her second wicket.Related

Winfield-Hill manoeuvred the hosts into a decent position after working her way to 40, but Sophie Munro ended her knock with her first ball of the innings. Bess Heath and Chloe Tryon added quick runs in the closing overs with 19 and 20 respectively, but de Klerk ensured the Diamonds couldn’t push towards 140 removing Heath before prising out Tryon and Lizzie Scott with the final two balls of the innings. The Blaze had no issues getting off to a strong start in their chase of 130. Marie Kelly put the pressure on the Diamonds bowlers from the off, scoring four boundaries to work herself to 19 before Scott produced an inswinger to prise out the opener.Sarah Bryce kept up the intensity and struck Katie Levick for the first two sixes of the game over long-on. She followed that with further sublime striking to take 16 off Scott’s third over, putting the visitors almost halfway to their victory target at the end of the powerplay. Bryce was in full flow at the crease, easily finding the gaps in the field. The 23-year-old notched her first fifty of the season from 30 deliveries, whittling down the required total. Abi Glen gave Diamonds a glimmer of hope by skittling Kathryn Bruce and Michaela Kirk in successive balls. De Klerk survived the hat-trick ball and with Bryce extinguished the hosts’ hope of a miraculous comeback. The Blaze cantered over the line, securing their win with 4.2 overs to spare.
