Katherine Brunt is the notable omission from England’s T20I series against India, with Lauren Bell set to make her debut in the format after being named in a 14-player squad for the three-match series, which gets underway at Chester-le-Street on September 10.Bell, 21, made her Test and ODI debut against South Africa earlier this summer, and was the outstanding seamer in this year’s Hundred, claiming 11 wickets at 16.00 – second only to her Southern Brave team-mate, the legspinner Amanda-Jade Wellington – including a best of 4 for 10 against Trent Rockets at the Ageas Bowl. She comes into the squad in place of the 37-year-old Brunt, who has been rested from the series following a busy workload that includes her involvement in the Commonwealth Games and Trent Rockets’ run to the Hundred eliminator.Related

Brunt retired from Test cricket prior to the South Africa Test this summer, and was visibly emotional after England’s disappointing showing in the Commonwealth Games, in which they failed to win a medal after defeats to India and New Zealand in their final two matches. However, head coach Lisa Keightley insisted that her absence from the India squad should not be taken as a sign that England are preparing to call time on her 18-year international career.”After discussions with Katherine she felt the best thing for her was to rest across both the T20 and ODI series,” Keightley said. “We fully support that decision with a view to maximising her mental and physical recovery off the back of what has been an intense year so far.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“That provides an opportunity for Lauren Bell, who was impressive in the Hundred, and with her, Alice Capsey, Freya Kemp and Issy Wong in the squad we’re starting to see a group of exciting young players who have the chance to cement their place in the England team.”Heather Knight, England’s captain, is also missing from the squad as she continues her recovery from last month’s hip surgery, meaning that Nat Sciver will once again lead the side – despite having chosen to relinquish the captaincy of Trent Rockets during the Hundred to focus on her own game. The visit of India, silver medallists in the Commonwealth Games, will be Keightley’s last series in charge, after it was confirmed earlier this summer that she will be returning to Australia after two-and-a-half years in the role.”I’m excited about finishing my time with this team with a really exciting series against India,” Keightley said. “They’re a great side and we’ll have to be at our best to win.”T20I Series

New club in contact to sign £23k-a-week Rangers ace with "blistering pace"

A new club are now believed to have made a move for a Rangers player with “blistering pace” in the January transfer window, according to a fresh update.

Rangers transfer news

One recent report has claimed that the Gers are on the verge of completing the signing of Dundee midfielder Lyall Cameron, in what would be an exciting long-term piece of business. The 22-year-old is a five-cap Scotland Under-21 international, and will no doubt hope to make the step up to the senior setup over time.

Rangers are also said to have been offered the chance to sign defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah, who is currently a free agent after leaving Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen at the end of last season.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah for Leverkusen.

Elsewhere, the Gers are reportedly in the mix to sign CSKA Moscow midfielder Sasa Zdjelar, with the 29-year-old someone who could add experience to Philippe Clement’s squad, as well as versatility, given his ability to thrive as a centre-back, too.

There are also exit rumours emerging at Ibrox, however, with Ridvan Yilmaz linked with a move to Besiktas, as they look to bring in a new left-back this month. Celtic’s Greg Taylor is seen as an option, but it looks as though the Rangers man is more likely to move there currently.

New club make contact for Rangers player

According to a new update from Rangers News, Ligue 1 side Nantes have now made an approach for Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo.

They are eyeing a loan deal until the end of the season, amid interest from Coventry City in the Championship in recent weeks.

Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo.

The £23,000-a-week Matondo has really struggled to make an impact at Rangers this season, starting just twice in the league and making only six appearances in the competition in total.

A couple of goals and assists apiece have come the Wales international’s way, in fairness, but there is sense in allowing him to leave in January, even though Kris Boyd has lauded his pace in the past, saying:

“We’ve not seen it enough in a Rangers jersey but you just kind of get the feeling that, the last few weeks… maybe because of Ryan Kent before, he always kind of thought ‘I’m not going to get in the team’, but with Ryan Kent moving on and there’s not really been anybody cemented that place at this moment at time, and there’s one thing with Rabbi Matondo – he has got blistering pace.”

Matondo is out of contract at Rangers at the end of next season, so a decision will need to be made regarding his future when the summer transfer window arrives later this year.

The club will either have to think about offering him an extension or cash in on him, rather than losing him on a free transfer when his deal expires in 2026. Considering they are happy to loan him out, it would arguably be a surprise if a new contract was on their mind.

South Africa never recovered from falling to 9 for 5, as Deepak Chahar, Arshdeep Singh and Harshal Patel took seven wickets between them

Jaffer: ‘Arshdeep’s new-ball bowling will make the India camp happy’

International cricket’s much-awaited return to Thiruvananthapuram, after three years, was celebrated with a clinic of pace bowling where, at the end of it all, India got the better of South Africa by eight wickets in the series opener.Even though contrasting half-centuries from KL Rahul (51*) and Suryakumar Yadav (50*) shepherded the small chase, India’s win was set up by the new-ball assault from Arshdeep Singh (3 for 32) and Deepak Chahar (2 for 24). They had South Africa on the mat early, reducing the visitors to 9 for 5 inside the third over, with a supreme display of swing bowling in both directions. For a brief period, even a target of 107 looked tricky for India with Kagiso Rabada (1 for 16) getting extra bounce, Wayne Parnell bowling stump-to-stump (0 for 14) and Anrich Nortje (1 for 32) bringing in red-hot pace. However, India always remained favorites, despite making only 17 runs in their first six overs; the 93-run unbeaten partnership between Rahul and Suryakumar took them home with 20 deliveries to spare and gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.A procession of ducks
The Greenfield International Stadium was expected to be full of runs. However, very few seamers control the swinging ball like Chahar and Arshdeep do.Chahar teased Temba Bavuma in the first over with two slips and three outswingers first up, but the last ball of the opening over was an inswinger that cut Bavuma in half and rattled the stumps. From the other end, Arshdeep had Quinton de Kock inside-edge a cut onto his stumps off a wide-ish length ball. Within the next four balls, Arshdeep had both Rilee Rossouw and David Miller accounted for with first-ball ducks, getting the former with an outswinger that took the outside edge off a drive and removing the latter with an inswinger that flattened the poles.Three balls later, Chahar had a third golden duck added to South Africa’s top order when Tristan Stubbs’ cut took a thick outside edge that flew to a diving Arshdeep at deep third. At 9 for 5, the South African lower order had a steep mountain to climb.Maharaj and co. pick up the pieces
Arshdeep and Chahar were given a third over each in the powerplay, but with the swing drying up, Aiden Markram and Parnell began a mini recovery. But, the odd boundary or six aside, they were kept in check by the pacers. Chahar relied on a shorter length – with the ball getting old – but Arshdeep kept finding his full ball to Markram whizzing past the outside edge.R Ashwin, introduced right after the powerplay after being picked ahead of Yuzvendra Chahal, had the liberty to show off his skills. He gave Parnell a mix of sliders and slow offbreaks in an economical spell of 4-1-8-0, while Markram – and later Keshav Maharaj – were offered the drifter and the carrom ball to keep them quiet. In all, he bowled 16 dots.Arshdeep Singh started with a three-wicket over•BCCI

Axar Patel, who was introduced as the fifth bowler after 12 overs, bowled 15 dots of his own, delivering four overs on the trot. His line was closer to the stumps, and relied on ensuring the lower-order batters could not free their arms. When he did offer Parnell a bit of a slog, the batter could only find the fielder at deep midwicket. However, Parnell’s 24 and Maharaj’s 35-ball 41 helped South Africa get into triple figures. Maharaj crunched Chahar in the 13th for a pulled six, and then got on top of Arshdeep in a 17-run over. Harshal, though, picked off Maharaj in a tidy 20th over to ensure India would be chasing at a run-rate of well under six.SA seamers keep India honest
The chase was meant to be straightforward, and with a small target, Rahul had the liberty of playing out Rabada’s first over for a maiden. Rabada, though, attacked the stumps in his second over, and induced an edge off Rohit Sharma’s bat by getting the ball to come in and forcing the India captain to play at it. Virat Kohli came out intending to attack Rabada, but after a miscued drive early on, he too reined his shot-making. From the other end, Parnell looked less dangerous, straying down the leg side in a search for swing. However, he did give Rahul a scare on two occasions inside the powerplay that tempted South Africa enough to take two unsuccessful lbw reviews. With wickets key for any chance of a South Africa win, Rabada bowled a third over inside the powerplay, and continued to trouble Rahul with his assortment of deliveries that jagged in and angled away. His three-over first spell for only six runs went a long way in India reaching only 17 for 1 after six overs, their lowest powerplay score ever in T20Is. Nortje came on just after the six-over mark, and his first delivery had Kohli looking to cut. But the extra bounce, and pace, got a thick edge, and de Kock was in action again. That brought Suryakumar in at No. 4.Suryakumar attacks, Rahul gives support
As it has been customary with the newly-minted No. 2 batter in T20Is, Suryakumar decided to be aggressive from the start. After being hit on the body by Nortje’s first ball, he played the flick off his next two balls to score 12. The first six was fortuitous, with Nortje’s pace taking it for a six over deep third. The second one was more like Suryakumar, going into the stands beyond deep midwicket. The introduction of the two spinners Tabraiz Shamsi and Maharaj meant smoother batting for the duo, especially Rahul. They milked the strike till the 10th over, ensuring the required run-rate did not go over 6.50 even if the team’s scoring rate, in itself, wasn’t remarkable. After drinks, Rahul smacked the occasionally wayward Nortje for six over long on, to move to 21 in 37 balls, and after that, he never looked out of sorts again. Both batters hit Shamsi and Maharaj for a six each – Rahul with a pull, Suryakumar with a shot over long off respectively – after which they thumped Nortje for 11 runs in the 15th over.Rabada, perhaps kept back a tad too late to bowl his final over, was hit by Suryakumar for consecutive fours with the game nearly sealed. Suryakumar, who finished with a strike-rate of 151.51, reached his fifty with only three runs to get. Rahul reached his half-century with a sweeping six off Shamsi to finish on 51 in 56 balls. They also happened to be India’s winning runs.

Clement has struck gold on Rangers’ star who’s worth 5x more than Cameron

Glasgow Rangers may not have enjoyed as productive a transfer window as the Ibrox faithful anticipated, but Philippe Clement is making inroads into improving his team.

One of the main priorities during January was to reduce the wage bill, something that the Belgian has managed to achieve by offloading Kieran Dowell and Rabbi Matondo, both moving elsewhere on loan.

Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo.

Youngsters Alex Lowry and Zak Lovelace have also departed, both permanently, which freed up some space in the first-team squad.

Only one new signing was made last month. Defender Rafael Fernandes joined the Gers from French side Lille on a six-month loan, with Clement having the option to make this deal permanent should he impress in Glasgow.

He is another young talent who has a high ceiling for development. Another player was also signed by the Light Blues, although he won’t arrive at the club until the summer.

Rangers sign Lyall Cameron

Bringing the wage bill down is key for the club to progress on the pitch, spending money more wisely on signings rather than wasting it on those not up to the job or who are approaching the end of their careers.

Furthermore, signing players who have yet to reach the peak years of their careers is also crucial to Clement’s long-term philosophy.

As such, Dundee sensation Lyall Cameron was targeted as a potential signing, especially given how well he had performed this season.

Technical Director Nils Koppen hailed the midfielder once the signing was complete, saying: “I am delighted that we have agreed a deal for Lyall to join the club and to continue his career at Rangers come the summer.

“Lyall has a lot of potential and I look forward to seeing him continue to grow at Rangers in the coming years.”

Lyall Cameron’s season in numbers for Dundee

The 22-year-old has emerged as one of the key members of the Dundee squad over the previous couple of years. Starring as his side won promotion from the Championship in 2023, Cameron has been at the beating heart of the Dundee midfield.

He has made 30 appearances for the Dens Park side in all competitions this term, scoring eight goals and registering seven assists in the process.

Even more remarkable is the fact these goal contributions have come from the heart of the midfield. Occasionally, he has featured in a more advanced role, but his desire to get forward often is certainly a massive bonus for Clement.

Aside from his contributions in front of goal, Cameron has managed to create four big chances in the top flight, averages 1.6 key passes, and wins 3.8 total duels per game.

Securing a player this talented, especially without having to pay a transfer fee (although compensation may have to be paid further down the line to Dundee) is a job well done by Clement and Koppen.

According to Transfermarkt, his current market valuation stands at €1m (£850k), which might not sound like much at this moment in time, but moving to Ibrox will give him the ideal platform to increase this over the coming years.

This wouldn’t be the first time Koppen and Co. have hit the jackpot on a young midfielder with talent to burn. Mohamed Diomande joined the club a year ago and has seen his valuation rise over the previous 12 months.

Mohamed Diomande’s Rangers statistics

The announcement of Diomande came out of the blue in January 2024, as the Gers secured his services on an initial six-month loan deal, before making this move permanent in the summer for a fee in the region of £4.5m.

Eyebrows were raised at the price tag, but given his age and high ceiling for development over the coming years, it had all the makings of a solid signing.

He made 19 appearances for the Light Blues between January and the end of the season, scoring twice and grabbing an assist. His technical ability was a joy to watch, although it looked as though the physicality of Scottish football might prove to be a hindrance for the African midfielder due to his slender frame.

His importance to the side this season has steadily grown, emerging as Clement’s main option in the heart of the pitch alongside Nico Raskin.

Indeed, the Ivorian has made 37 appearances in all competitions for the Ibrox side this term, scoring five times while registering four assists.

Going forward, he has created four big chances while averaging one key pass and one successful dribble per game.

The midfielder also has an 87% pass success rate, while he also recovers 4.1 balls per game and makes 1.1 tackles. This season has also seen the player improve his physical strength, culminating in the 23-year-old winning 54% of his ground duels per game.

He scored a delightful goal against Dundee United recently, leading Sky Sports commentator Ian Crocker to describe the striker as “magnificent”.

If he keeps performing like this between now and the end of the season, Diomande might just attract some attention, no doubt about that.

Mohamed Diomande’s market value at Rangers

These recent performances on the pitch have boosted Diomande’s market value slightly. Indeed, according to Transfermarkt, the midfielder is now currently worth €6m (£5m) and this will only increase as time goes on.

If the Gers did decide to sell for whatever reason, they would likely make a substantial profit on their initial £4.5m investment.

Furthermore, Diomande is also valued more than five times more than new signing Cameron, proving just how effective he has been of late.

Mohamed Diomande

Of course, if the Scot can stamp his authority on the team when he moves this summer, then his valuation will soar. That’s a certainty.

Enjoying Diomande while he is at Rangers should be something every fan aims to do, as the former FC Nordsjaelland sensation won’t be at Ibrox for long.

Western Australia quicks fight back after Steketee six-for

Queensland weren’t able to cement their advantage and were bundled out for 97 as 20 wickets fell on day two

Queensland seamer Mark Steketee was almost unplayable on a green WACA pitch as he continued his strong start to the Sheffield Shield season, before Western Australia’s quicks engineered a stunning fightback as 20 wickets fell on day two of an enthralling low-scoring contest.Steketee, a late addition to Australia’s Test squad to Pakistan earlier in the year, issued another reminder to national selectors with a six-wicket haul as Queensland dismissed WA for just 115 to gain a first-innings lead of 96. He has taken 16 wickets at 13.37 in three Shield matches this season. But Queensland weren’t able to cement their advantage and were bundled out for just 97 in a dramatic last session with quicks Lance Morris and Joel Paris combining for seven wickets.Having been dismissed just three hours earlier, WA’s chase of 194 started disastrously when opener Cameron Bancroft fell to seamer Michael Neser in the first over.Though they claimed Bancroft just before stumps, Queensland were left frustrated after being in control following Steketee’s earlier heroics.Even more bowler-friendly than nearby Optus Stadium, which hogged the local limelight the past week, the WACA’s seaming pitch was tailor-made for Steketee who tore through WA’s strong batting order during a destructive morning session. He claimed Bancroft and 18-year-old sensation Teague Wyllie within three balls to leave WA reeling at 3 for 3. Steketee at one point had the remarkable figures of 5-9 from seven overs. He combined brilliantly with Neser, who also relished the conditions, as WA slumped to 6 for 29 and were in real danger of posting their lowest-ever score on their home ground and overtaking the long-time record of 50 against New South Wales in 1950.But allrounder Aaron Hardie and Paris combined for a 45-run partnership to ensure WA avoided the history books before Steketee and Neser finished off the innings to give Queensland a stranglehold of the contest.WA’s quicks needed to respond and they did so after tea with Morris, arguably the quickest bowler in Australia, grabbing the key wickets of Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja in four balls. He beat Labuschagne with sheer pace to trap him lbw before Khawaja nicked a fiery length delivery to second slip. While Morris produced the fireworks, left-arm quick Paris nagged away on a good length to finish with superb figures of 3 for 15 from 11 overs. There was some concern over the fitness of quick Jhye Richardson, who starred on day one with four wickets, when he hobbled off the ground in the final session but he returned with two wickets, including ending Matthew Renshaw’s stubborn 72-ball resistance.Western Australia’s fightback has thrown the match wide open with the only certainty being that it will finish on day three.

The 10 best players in the Championship right now

The second tier is providing great entertainment and drama once again, but which stars are standing out?

1 ByCharlie Smith Feb 14, 2025 10 Daryl Murphy (Ipswich Town) 2014/15 (27 goals)

During the 2014/15 season, Bournemouth and Watford secured automatic promotion, scoring more than 90 goals en route to the Premier League.

However, the top scorer that season was Daryl Murphy of Ipswich Town, who scored six more than Troy Deeney and Blackburn’s Jordan Rhodes. The Tractor Boys finished in the play-off places but lost out to rivals Norwich City.

9 Andre Gray (Brentford, Burnley) 2015/16 (25 goals)

In his prime, Andre Gray had electric pace and was clinical in front of goal, and scored two of his 25 goals in 2015/16 for Brentford.

He left the Bees for Burnley towards the end of the transfer window for a club-record fee and instantly repaid the faith shown in him by those at Turf Moor.

The Clarets won the title and finished on 93 points, with Gray scoring 25 times in total, four more than Abel Hernandez and Ross McCormack.

The 15 most expensive signings in EFL Championship history

The second tier has had its fair share of mega-money deals.

ByRoss Kilvington Feb 3, 2025 8 Chris Wood (Leeds United) 2016/17 (27 goals)

New Zealand international Chris Wood found a home at Leeds United and starred during the 2016/17 campaign, but the Whites finished just outside the play-off places.

He scored 27 of Leeds’ 61 goals under Garry Monk that season, four more than Dwight Gayle of Newcastle and Glenn Murray of Brighton, with those two sides winning automatic promotion.

7 Matej Vydra (Derby County) 2017/18 (21 goals)

Matej Vydra scored the lowest number of goals to pick up the Golden Boot award over the last 10 years, with 21 goals in 40 Championship appearances for Derby County in 2017/18.

The Czech forward mainly played as a second striker under Gary Rowett, with the Rams losing out in the play-offs to Fulham.

6 Teemu Pukki (Norwich City) 2018/19 (29 goals)

Daniel Farke built one of the best Championship teams ever seen in 2018/19, with Teemu Pukki firing Norwich City to the Premier League.

The Finnish forward was clinical in front of goal and scored 29 goals in the 2018/19 season. Pukki also netted 10 times for his country in 2019 in a real purple patch of his career.

The 10 best Championship play-off finals – ranked

This year’s final is drawing closer.

ByCharlie Smith May 23, 2024 5 Aleksandar Mitrovic (Fulham) 2019/20 (26 goals)

In truth, Aleksandar Mitrovic was always going to be too good for the Championship, and after netting 11 times in the Premier League the year before, it wasn’t a surprise that he was the Golden Boot winner in 2019/20.

Fulham didn’t win automatic promotion, but they did go straight back up via the play-offs, with Mitrovic setting up Joe Bryan in the Wembley final against Brentford.

4 Ivan Toney (Brentford) 2020/21 (31 goals)

It is rare to see a player break the 30-goal mark in the Championship, but that is what Ivan Toney managed to do for Brentford in 2020/21.

The Bees, under Thomas Frank, won promotion via the play-offs, and Toney’s 31 goals and 10 assists ensured a third-place finish. Toney wasn’t done there, though, and found the back of the net against Bournemouth in the play-off semi-final and against Swansea City at Wembley.

3 Aleksandar Mitrovic (Fulham) 2021/22 (43 goals)

A record-breaking campaign in 2021/22 saw Mitrovic make the list once again, with the Serbian netting an incredible 43 times in 44 appearances, while also registering seven assists that year.

The powerful striker netted two hat-tricks and nine braces as Fulham won the title, scoring 106 goals in the process. Mitrovic finished a whopping 14 goals clear of Dominic Solanke at Bournemouth.

The highest points tallies in Championship history

Leeds and Burnley recently made second-tier history.

ByCharlie Smith May 17, 2025 2 Chuba Akpom (Middlesbrough) 2022/23 (28 goals)

Middlesbrough's former striker Chuba Akpom.

Middlesbrough were the second-highest scorers in the Championship in 2022/23 but failed to go up, with top goalscorer Chuba Akpom leaving the Riverside for Ajax.

Akpom scored seven more than Viktor Gyokeres of Coventry City and won the Player of the Year award as well as the Golden Boot, in what has proven to be the prime of his career.

1 Sammie Szmodics (Blackburn Rovers) 2023/24 (27 goals)

Sammie Szmodics

An attacking midfielder who played for a Blackburn Rovers side battling relegation in 2023/24, Sammie Szmodics somehow managed to score 27 goals for Rovers.

Without him, those at Ewood Park would have surely been relegated to League One. Szmodics sealed Blackburn’s survival with a brace at champions Leicester City on the final day, seeing his second-tier tally hit 27. He left months later for Ipswich Town.

The EFL Championship's top goalscorers of all time
