Jacques Kallis has been appointed as England’s latest batting consultant for next month’s Test series in Sri Lanka, a tour that the ECB insists is set to go ahead as planned in spite of the heightened uncertainty over the UK’s latest wave of measures to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic.The ECB last week stepped up its search for full-time appointments for their batting, pace- and spin-bowling coaching vacancies, with applications due to close on January 10, meaning that Kallis’s appointment may be the last consultancy role used by the board. Similar appointments were made for Jonathan Trott during the Pakistan Tests last summer, and Marcus Trescothick on the recent white-ball tour of South Africa.At this stage, Kallis is not expected to be involved in England’s subsequent Test tour of India – although that may yet change, with the ECB having flagged the need to rotate their options for the foreseeable, to mitigate against the strain of living, practising and playing in bio-secure environments.With that in mind, Graham Thorpe, England’s regular assistant coach to Chris Silverwood, has been rested for this leg of the winter, but is expected to be back on board for the India tour. After Guilherme, Foderingham and Kilman, West Ham appear to be eyeing more signings at the back and in attack. Recent claims have suggested that West Ham have agreed a loan with an option-to-buy deal for defender Jean-Clair Todibo, however, the Frenchman has his heart set on a move to Juventus instead.
In the final third, a £25m offer has been submitted for Alexander Sorloth, whereas the club are reportedly closing in on signing Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson, who has said yes to the Irons after the club tabled a long-term London Stadium contract.
Alongside another winger and centre-back, a new right-back is seemingly required after Ben Johnson left for Ipswich Town, leaving Vladimir Coufal as the only senior option available to Julen Lopetegui.

John Holder has claimed the ECB are “more interested in protecting their reputation than dealing with the issues” after it emerged they had hired an expert in reputational damage to counter allegations of institutional racism.Holder, the former international umpire, has announced that he and fellow former umpire Ismail Dawood are attempting to sue to ECB for racial discrimination. They have also called for an independent inquiry into the lack of non-white match officials in English cricket.Now it has emerged that the ECB are utilising the skills of Julian Pike, a high-profile lawyer from the London firm Farrer & Co, to advise them on the case. Pike is renowned as an expert in reputation management who, according to the Farrer & Co website, advises organisations which “could be at risk of reputational harm”. He previously defended News International against claims of phone hacking.But while Farrer & Co may have a lofty reputation – members of the royal family, including Queen Elizabeth II, are among their clients – their usage has left Holder and Dawood underwhelmed. Instead they feel it suggests the ECB are more focused on protecting their image rather than demonstrating a commitment to greater equality and diversity in future.”I think the ECB should face the issues and ensure lessons are learned,” Holder told ESPNcricinfo. “Instead, it seems they are more interested in protecting their reputation than dealing with those issues.”Dawood would appear to agree.”Are the ECB focused on ensuring there is more equality and diversity in the game?” he asked ESPNcricinfo rhetorically. “Or are they focused on brushing their issues under the carpet in the hope of ensuring their broadcasters and sponsors don’t realise the severity of the problem?”We think they should be looking to employ more people from Black and Asian backgrounds. The ECB point out that Pike is also an expert in sports governance, safeguarding and integrity, with a long history of working with national governing bodies.They also insist he has been utilised, in this context, in an attempt to arrange mediation with Dawood and Holder in an attempt to fully understand their grievances and find solutions.Attempts to arrange mediation have so far proved unsuccessful. Holder and Dawood’s representatives rejected a suggestion that Raj Parker, the recommendation of the independent organisation Sports Resolutions, lead the mediation on the basis that he had previously worked at the same firm of solicitors as the ECB’s deputy chair, Barry O’Brien.The ECB, meanwhile, have rejected Holder and Dawood’s suggestion that Lord Peter Hain lead the mediation process, on the grounds that he was “not qualified” as a mediator. Hain has previously held roles including Secretary Of State for Work and Pensions, and Secretary Of State for Northern Ireland. In the latter role, he played a key role in negotiating a historic power-sharing agreement.Since ESPNcricinfo revealed details of the lack of inclusivity in umpiring in England and Wales, the ECB have announced several measures aimed at improving diversity, including a commitment to ensure that a minimum of 15 percent of umpires on the national panel (the panel operating at county second XI and National County level) are from a Black and minority ethnic (BAME) background by the end of 2021. Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, a succession of former players detailed their experiences of exclusion within the game, with Holder and Dawood joining Azeem Rafiq in launching legal action.Holder, at least, is unimpressed by the ECB’s talk of inclusivity. “I’ve heard all this before,” he says. “The ECB have made grand statements like this for years. I remember Tim Lamb [the former ECB chief executive] promising racial equality in cricket in 1999.”But it’s proven to be nothing but talk. Nothing changed. If anything, things have got worse. To be blunt, I just don’t trust them anymore.”An ECB spokesman told ESPNcricinfo: “The actions we have outlined over recent months demonstrate our continued commitment to ensuring cricket is an inclusive and diverse sport. We take very seriously the allegations that have been raised by John Holder and Ismail Dawood and over the past months have been trying to meet with them both in order that we can listen to their experiences, so as to better inform our future approach to recruiting and developing umpires and match officials. Shakib had written to the board to ask for leave from Bangladesh’s home Test series against Sri Lanka, which was ratified last week. It was a significant move in the context of the BCB’s previous stand on similar matters, where they ranged from being cautious about giving NOCs to not entertaining any request.Hassan said that players would now be allowed to play in franchise-based competitions but that once they signed the central contract, which is now split between red- and white-ball players, they would have to commit to playing for Bangladesh.”We will enter into a new contact with the players (for 2021),” Hassan said. “It will be mentioned clearly who wants to play which format. They have to inform us. If they have any other engagement, they have to be clear about their availability. It is very open. But when someone says I don’t want to play the next Test, and play in a franchise T20 league, it becomes very clear that we can’t do much with them.”Despite the BCB chief’s strong reaction, ESPNcricinfo understands that the rationale behind the decision to let Shakib go was also based on the fact that the Bangladesh-Sri Lanka Test series is essentially a dead rubber in the World Test Championship, with neither side in contention for the final. It is also true that Shakib has been a reluctant Test cricketer for a while, and the BCB decided to let him go, perhaps with the larger aim of having him available for the major white-ball tournaments that Bangladesh will play over the next three years.

Philippe Clement will no doubt be happy with the transfer business that the Gers have already completed this summer, with a host of new stars arriving at the club. That being said, further fresh faces are expected moving forward, with Goncalo Borges linked with a move to Ibrox.
Rangers have sent a proposal to the 23-year-old Porto attacker, who made 17 appearances in the Primeira Liga last season, although only one of those came from the start.
Meanwhile, Jordan has stood out as a primary transfer target throughout the summer window, with a move even reportedly agreed in some outlets.
The Spaniard still has three years remaining on his current deal at Sevilla, but he appears to be surplus to requirements there, hence his switch to Rangers potentially coming to fruition. Jordan has won the Europa League twice with the La Liga side, highlighting his credentials as a strong signing for Clement's men ahead of the new Scottish Premiership season.
Rangers make fresh proposal for 30-year-old
According to a new update from the Spanish newspapers on Monday morning [via Sport Witness], Rangers willl "push again" to sign Sevilla central midfielder Jordan this summer, but they claim a transfer is not as far along as other outlets reported in the last few days.
While the 30-year-old isn't believed to be close to sealing a move to Ibrox yet, the Gers want to sort a loan-to-buy option, with a permanent deal of €4m (£3.3m) at the end of this coming season. They have offered to pay 40% of his current salary during the next 12 months in order to get a deal over the line.
At this point, it would arguably be a surprise if Jordan didn't become a Rangers player in the coming weeks, certainly on loan, if not on a permanent basis. In fact, the loan-to-buy option could be the best outcome for Clement, in terms of having a season to assess the veteran midfielder and decide whether he is worth persevering with beyond the 2024/25 season.

While Jordan is a slightly ageing player, everything points towards him being an effective addition for Rangers, given his aforementioned success in a Sevilla shirt, and the fact that he is now a hugely experienced figure. He has made 219 appearances in La Liga in total, chipping in with 14 goals and 18 assists, showing that he is capable of delivering end product from the middle of the park.
