O Verdão é o atual líder do Brasileirão.

8/10 Leeds star has just made himself undroppable for Wembley final

Leeds United booked their ticket to Wembley for the final of the Championship play-offs after they beat Norwich City 4-0 on Thursday night.

The Whites produced a masterclass of a performance at Elland Road as they thumped the Canaries in Yorkshire to win 4-0 on aggregate.

Daniel Farke's side had drawn 0-0 with Norwich at Carrow Road in the first leg last Sunday, which left it all to play for heading into Thursday's big showdown.

Leeds were the only team to show up on the night, though, as they found themselves 2-0 up inside 20 minutes and ran out comfortable 4-0 winners overall.

There were a host of impressive performers across the park, as Joel Piroe, Ilia Gruev, Crysencio Summerville, and Georginio Rutter all got on the scoresheet, and Illan Meslier made a huge save from Josh Sargent at 2-0.

One player who has made himself undroppable ahead of the showpiece event at Wembley later this month is centre-forward Joel Piroe, who has not been a guaranteed starter in recent weeks.

Joel Piroe's inconsistent game time for Leeds

Ahead of the second leg clash, the Dutch striker had only started three of the club's previous 13 league matches – coming off the bench ten times.

Patrick Bamford, who missed the semi-final games with a patella tendon injury, and Rutter had been preferred to him at times as Farke usually kept him to bring on as a substitute in matches during that period.

However, Piroe has had his fair share of starts over the course of the entire campaign, with 31 starts in his 45 Championship appearances during the regular season.

As you can see in the table above, the left-footed sensation has been one of the best finishers within the squad in the league this season, with 14 goals from 12.95 xG.

This shows that he has been largely effective in front of goal and has not wasted too many high-quality chances to find the back of the net for the Whites.

However, his finishing was not enough to land him a regular spot in the run-in towards the end of the regular season in the Championship, as shown by his three starts in 13 games ahead of the clash on Thursday.

Why Joel Piroe is now undroppable for the play-off final

Despite his lack of starts, the 24-year-old star must now be considered to be undroppable ahead of the trip to Wembley towards the end of May for the play-off final.

His performance against Norwich at Elland Road should be enough to have nailed down a starting spot for the Whites in London, as he produced a fantastic display.

Joel Piroe

The Yorkshire Evening Press' Graham Smyth awarded him a terrific player rating of 8/10 for his showing on Thursday, writing that the forward was always a 'threat' to the Canaries defence throughout the evening.

As per Smyth's comment, Piroe was a constant nuisance to the opposition with his movement and positioning off the ball to generate chances for himself, along with his excellent link-up play in possession.

His goal came from him peeling off the back of Shane Duffy to find himself free in the box, which allowed the striker to head past Angus Gunn from Wilfried Gnonto's sensational cross to the back post.

Along with his goal, Piroe produced another two shots on target – as he regularly tested Gunn – and had a big impact on the game on the ball, despite having fewer touches (27) than goalkeeper Meslier (37).

The former Swansea star completed 80% of his attempted passes and made two key passes, which shows that he was reliable in possession and looked to make things happen for his fellow attackers, rather than being selfish and solely focused on working his own opportunities.

He did lose three of his five duels, and lost 62% of his battles in the regular Championship season, but Farke may be able to excuse the lightweight nature of his performance given what he was able to do on the ball.

His quality in the final third was on full display, with his excellent header and impressive chance creation for his teammates, and that is why Piroe must now be undroppable for the final at Wembley.

The alternatives to Joel Piroe in the play-off final

Farke does have a plethora of options to choose from to make up his attack for the huge promotion-deciding game later this month.

In the first leg of the semi-finals at Carrow Road, the German boss opted to play Archie Gray in a number ten role with Rutter up front and it failed badly, with Football Insider handing the former a dismal match rating of 1/10.

20-year-old marksman Mateo Joseph is also an option for the manager to call upon if needed but it seems incredibly unlikely that he would do so barring a string of injuries.

The academy graduate made 20 appearances as a substitute, with zero starts, in the regular Championship season and came off the bench in one of the two clashes with Norwich in the play-offs.

It would, therefore, be a shock for Farke to hand him a start in the final at Wembley with no prior league starts to his name in a Whites shirt.

Patrick Bamford could, however, come into consideration if he is able to recover from the patella tendon injury that kept him out against Norwich.

Patrick Bamford in action for Leeds United in the Championship.

The former England international started 15 of his 33 appearances during the Championship season, and chipped in with eight goals from 9.52 xG.

This shows that, unlike Piroe, the experienced forward has let the team down at times with his wasteful finishing, as he underperformed against the quality of chances that were created for him.

He has also scored one goal in his last seven matches for Leeds, which shows that the striker is not heading into the final in good form.

Leeds' 9/10 sensation outshone Summerville to become play-off hero

Leeds United swept Norwich City aside with ease to reach the Championship play-off final.

ByKelan Sarson May 17, 2024

Therefore, Piroe, based on his performance on Thursday, is the best option to lead the line for the Whites and that is why he should be undroppable for the Wembley showpiece.

Play late: West Indies' template to succeed in England

Brathwaite, Dowrich, Chase show patience and discipline

Nagraj Gollapudi10-Jul-2020Playing late. Kraigg Brathwaite pithily explained it is the best way to succeed in England as a batsman. Brathwaite’s 65 was his first half-century in 21 innings. On the previous tour of England in 2017, along with Shai Hope, Brathwaite was West Indies’ best batsman. But no one remembers what Brathwaite did in the three years since then. Technical errors piled up as the runs turned into drip feed.On Friday, Brathwaite showed West Indies the way. He set the template of how to bat in England. Shane Dowrich and Roston Chase followed Brathwaite’s counsel to put West Indies in a position of control if not complete command of this first Test. The challenge for West Indies was whether their batsmen could bat out the entire day to gain a significant lead. West Indies had done that twice against England in 2019, in two of the three Tests, but that was at home. Overseas, only once since 2017 have West Indies managed to bat out a day (minimum 80 overs) without losing 10 wickets away from home – against India in Hyderabad three years ago.Luckily for the visitors the weather forecast for the last three days of this Test was sunny – the best time to make runs. Brathwaite and Hope ticked the first requirement – see off the first hour. They played out 15 overs, denying James Anderson, Jofra Archer Mark Wood and England captain Ben Stokes the luxury of taking the upper hand they are normally accustomed to.Kraigg Brathwaite bats•Getty Images

It was Brathwaite who looked at ease more than Hope. Brathwaite played the ball as late as possible, in his own words, under his eye line. And as Brian Lara had advised, Brathwaite protected his wicket. Watchful he was, but he was also keeping the scoreboard ticking. Talking with the host broadcaster Sky Sports, Brathwaite said he had made a few technical changes including opening up his stance to counter mainly the incoming delivery, which is prevalent in English conditions. At the other end Hope was stacking up the dots: he had as many as 25 dot balls in his first 30. As he scratched for runs, Archer tested Hope’s patience. In his fourth over Archer attacked Hope on the off stump. Hope had picked a four off his fellow Barbadian, but that was a leading edge which he had attempted originally to respond to by closing the face of the bat.Hope tried that again, attempting to push towards the leg side, to a delivery Archer pitched slightly fuller on the length, just outside off stump. He got rapped on the pads and it looked plumb. Hope asked for the review after brief discussion with Brathwaite. Luckikly for him Archer had bowled a no ball. The relief, if any, was short-lived. In the next over, Hope played with hard hands at a ball that was drifting away from Dom Bess and Stokes picked up an easy catch at slip.ALSO READ: Brathwaite, Dowrich steer WI into commanding positionHis replacement, Shamarh Brooks, did everything that Hope failed to: he played with an assurance and freedom of mind. It transferred the pressure on to the bowler. It also allowed Brathwaite to relax as he picked two fours off Stokes before he was unlucky with the umpire’s call in the same over.If Brooks went on the front foot before lunch, after the break he was pushed to play on the back foot as Anderson pushed the length slightly back and found a hint of movement. Brooks became circumspect and was soon caught behind.Jermaine Blackwood left the Caribbean saying he would “bat as long as possible” in England to erase that fraught assessment pundits had formed of him: as a “ball beater”. Off his third ball, he attempted to loft Anderson over his head, but had to check his drive at the last minute. Anderson would soon deliver him a maiden over. Blackwood was restless. A short time later, when Bess came on, Blackwood indulged in over-confidence: he charged the offspinner to hole out straight to Anderson at wide mid-off. Bess, Stokes and England let out a guffaw as a disgruntled Blackwood rapped his pads.ALSO READ: Blackwood ‘more determined, more focused after being dropped’The visitors were once again learning one of Test cricket’s key lessons: an advantage can slip from the hand like a fistful of sand.Luckily for them, Chase was guarding one end sensibly in the afternoon. For company he had an able hand in Dowrich. Like Brathwaite, Chase played time initially. He was happy to defend or leave out as many deliveries as possible. But it was part of the plan. To blunt the bowler’s plans, to be watchful before scoring freely. In his 142-ball innings, Chase defended nearly half the deliveries (68). He barely scored 20 runs in the second session without once looking impatient.England took the second new ball in the first over after tea. First ball, from Anderson, Chase punched a firm cover drive, a four, his best stroke of the day. When Archer pitched a hit-me ball on his legs, Chase obliged with a flicked four. The new cherry was losing its shine quickly as West Indies bulilt the lead.Chase was comfortable now dealing the testing lines of Anderson – in the channel – and the rib-ticklers form Archer. That is what happens when batsmen talk about the importance of playing time – they get settled in their mind, the impulsive strokes recede, their eyes zoom in on the bowler’s wrist and shine, their feet move according to the delivery. Everything goes like clockwork.Shane Dowrich drives the ball•Getty Images

Dowrich, too, assumed the go-steady template after picking two fours in his first three deliveries against Bess, both played on the front foot, both punched with conviction – one a straight drive and the next through covers. Some might have got the early feeling that Dowrich wanted to take Bess out of the attack. Numbers negate that perception: according to ESPNcricinfo’s bbb data, of the 115 deliveries he played today, Dowrich showed aggressive intent only on eight occasions.Similarly, Chase showed aggressive intent only seven times during his 194-minute vigil, same as Brathwaite, who lasted 125 balls. Dowrich, Chase and Brathwaite were the only three batsmen who played out more than 100 deliveries in West Indies’ innings. The bbb data also shows those were the only three batsmen with high in-control numbers: Chase (82), Brathwaite (80) and Dowrich (71).Brathwaite, Dowrich and Chase were the only three batsmen who showed the discipline that West Indies had talked about in the lead up to the series. They failed to convert their starts into big scores, but they showed the likes of Hope, Brook and Blackwood the importance of patience.

Adil Rashid could re-enter Test equation, says England selector Ed Smith

Legspinner has not played Tests since 2019 and does not have red-ball county contract

George Dobell18-Aug-2020

Adil Rashid has not played Test cricket since the 2018-19 winter•Associated Press

England’s national selector, Ed Smith, has suggested Adil Rashid could still be in contention for a place in the Test team despite no longer having a red-ball county contract.Rashid, 32, is England’s first-choice legspinner in the white-ball formats but has not featured in a first-class game since he played in the first Test of the series in the Caribbean in January 2019. He last played for his county, Yorkshire, in September 2017.But despite Smith having previously said Rashid “must have a contract to play red-ball cricket” in order to be eligible for selection, he has now made it clear that he is open-minded about a Test recall.ALSO READ: Malan, Jordan return to England squad for Pakistan T20IsRashid’s situation is complicated by the shoulder injury he sustained during the 2019 summer. He required two cortisone injections to help him get through the World Cup and admitted the injury inhibited his ability to deliver his variations. He told the BBC that, at one stage, he “couldn’t life my arm [while holding] the ball”.He has subsequently undergone a long rehabilitation period and, as a result, decided to concentrate on white-ball cricket until September and then reassess his options. His form in the ODI series against Ireland earlier this summer suggested he had made a full recovery. Not only did he generate sharp turn – his main variation, his googly, was particularly potent – but he bowled with decent pace and had no problem delivering his full allocation of overs in all three matches. And with England hoping to tour Sri Lanka, for two Tests postponed from earlier this year, and India over the coming winter, Rashid’s skill could prove hard to overlook.”The main thing with Adil is that he’s made really good strides with his shoulder injury and he’s developed really well in recovery from that injury,” Smith said as he announced England’s T20 squad for the series against Pakistan. “His form is really good in white-ball cricket. We’ve all seen the skill and the mastery that he’s displaying.”But he’s coming back from a reasonably serious injury and there’s a difference between bowling 10 overs and bowling 100 overs. He’s still working on that physical side, but I think in the long-term Adil still has aspirations to play for England in all forms.”We’ll work with Adil and Yorkshire, see how his shoulder is and see if he is ready to play four- or five-day cricket.”While Smith has shown previously – not least with the selections of Jos Buttler and Rashid in 2018 – that he is prepared to look beyond the county game or specific formats when making selections, his recall of Rashid proved somewhat controversial. Mark Arthur, the Yorkshire chief executive, said at the time: “We’re very surprised. I hope England know what they’re doing to Adil and the county game.”For that reason, if Rashid is to make a Test return this winter, he would probably have to appear in a Bob Willis Trophy match – not necessarily for Yorkshire – before the end of the season. With only a couple of rounds of games remaining, however, and Rashid involved in England’s white-ball squads, such opportunities look thin on the ground. A more realistic target, therefore, may prove the winter of 2021-22 and England’s Ashes tour.Rashid has previously suggested that tour is in the back of his mind. “If I stick to white-ball cricket then there’s no Ashes for me [in 2021-22],” he said. “But if I play red-ball and my shoulder allows it then that’s something that I could look towards. But it’s something I’ve got to earn.”James Vince loses his middle stump•Getty Images

Smith also explained the selection of Dawid Malan ahead of James Vince for the Pakistan T20Is by pointing out the former had been in the squad in South Africa – he actually came into the team for the final match when Joe Denly was taken ill – and was therefore the man in possession. He also suggested Vince, who has now played more than 40 international games for England and averages in the 20s in all three formats, had not taken his chances.”I think James is a very talented player,” Smith said. “At his best James has the skill to look absolutely at home in international cricket. I’m not saying anything different to you here that I said to James on the phone, which is it’s just a question of him grabbing his opportunities. That’s one thing he’d be the first to say, and I think he has said it publicly, that for someone of his talent and his class he probably hasn’t grabbed his opportunities in the way he would have liked to have done.”Denly, meanwhile, owes his inclusion to his all-round skills. “People who can do more than one thing gain an advantage as they can fill different roles,” Smith said. “Moving forward, Joe has a chance of breaking into that T20 set-up.”Smith also confirmed England would not be moving players from the current Test squad into this T20 squad. While one or two involved in that Test squad – the likes of Mark Wood, for example – have played very little cricket this summer, they will not be transferred even if they miss out on selection for the final Test of the summer starting on Friday.”That won’t happen,” Smith said. “Not everyone has played a huge amount of cricket in the Test bubble; some of the reserves haven’t played at all. But the situation for this particular T20 series against Pakistan won’t change. We won’t be considering guys who have been in the T20 bubble to face Pakistan.”

He’s perfect for Slot: Liverpool plotting move for £40m Salah successor

Does he stay, or does he go now?

The question lingers surrounding Mohamed Salah's future at Liverpool, with intense interest from Saudi Arabia seemingly set to be renewed in the Egyptian genius this summer, amid his expiring contract.

With just 12 months left to run on his current deal, the 32-year-old may be nearing the end of what has been a simply sensational stint on Merseyside, firmly quashing the early doubters with 300 goals and assists in just 349 games in all competitions.

A run of just three goals in the final 11 Premier League games of the 2023/24 campaign may have sparked rare criticism – the former Roma man even harshly dubbed a "fair-weather player" by the typically brazen Simon Jordan – yet the winger's return of 25 goals and 14 assists in all competitions is nothing to be sniffed.

Perhaps not now truly at his peak, yet if Salah is to depart any time soon then he will certainly leave a sizeable void for new boss Arne Slot to fill – hence the club's apparent interest in an exciting, dream successor on the right flank.

Liverpool in the race for Brazilian wonderkid

According to TEAMtalk, the Merseysiders are deemed to be among the clubs who are interested in signing Brazilian teenager, Luis Guilherme, with the Reds said to have 'watched his progress carefully' in recent times.

The report outlines that as many as six Premier League clubs have sent scouts to watch the 18-year-old in action for Palmerias over the last 12 months, with the expectation that he will follow in the footsteps of Endrick and Estevao Willian – the pair set to join Real Madrid and Chelsea, respectively.

Luis Guilherme

Much like that duo, Guilherme won't come cheap if Liverpool are to secure a move this summer, with the youngster reportedly set to fetch around £40m. A potential sticking point may also be West Ham United's interest, with the Hammers already said to be in talks regarding a deal – as per Fabrizio Romano.

How Luis Guilherme could fit in under Slot

It may be something of a leap to suggest that Guilherme can fill the shoes of Salah any time soon, although the hope would be that he could eventually solidify a starting berth for himself on the flanks in the years to come.

As data analyst Ben Mattinson has suggested, the in-demand talent "doesn't have the hype" of the aforementioned Endrick and 'Messinho', yet he does still "have the world at his feet", having shown flashes of his quality in recent times.

A tally of one goal and one assist in 44 games at senior level does not represent the most eye-catching of returns, yet it is the winger's speed and trickery that has allowed him to standout, having been lauded for the way he can "fool defenders" by Mattinson.

A left-footer who typically operates off the right – much like Salah – the suggestion is that Guilherme would represent a perfect fit for Slot's system, even despite his youth, with Mattinson noting:

"In Arne Slot’s 4-2-3-1 (same as Palmeiras), he could cover RW, AM, LW. At Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar. Arne Slot used Calvin Stengs as a AM/RW hybrid which would suit Luis Guilherme very well."

Seemingly a "good fit" for the Anfield outfit, the raw starlet could be just another young talent for Slot to nurture and develop – the Dutchman notably handing a prominent role to Newcastle United loanee Yankuba Minteh this season at Feyenoord, with the 19-year-old chalking up 16 goals and assists in the Eredivisie from the right flank.

Unafraid to put his trust in youth, Slot could be the perfect figure to help Guilherme realise his potential, with the challenge now attempting to steal a march on Julen Lopetegui and West Ham in the battle for his signature.
