Celtic now ready to make a move for £8m Jota alternative to replace Kyogo

Celtic are ready to make a move for an “exciting” forward in what remains of this transfer window as they prepare to sell Kyogo Furuhashi, according to a new report.

Celtic transfer news

The Hoops secured their place in the knockout phase of the Champions League on Wednesday night for the first time since 2013, after beating Young Boys 1-0 at Parkhead. Celtic can now look forward to an exciting two-legged game against a top European side in February, as well as continuing their pursuit of another Scottish Premiership title.

Despite the fact they are in the next round of the Champions League and sit pretty at the top of the table, Celtic look set to lose one of their key players, Kyogo Furuhashi. French side Rennes are closing in on the Japan international’s signature, with it reportedly being a deal worth £10 million. The 30-year-old has been a key player for the Hoops, and captain Callum McGregor was hopeful the club can keep hold of him.

McGregor said: “I understand there is a lot of speculation. But he’s a Celtic player at the minute, and obviously we want to keep him for as long as we can.

“He’s a top player. Again, you see his quality tonight, his movement, and the way he sets the tone for the team. All our good players, we want to keep them for as long as we can. Generally, when there’s speculation, then people have done well.

“We want that as well. It gets people talking about Celtic and the players that we’ve got. I’m sure the club will do everything they can to keep him because he’s a top player and a top person as well.”

Celtic to make a move for £8m forward as Kyogo replacement

Despite reports of Jota coming the other way from Rennes, according to The Scottish Sun, Celtic are ready to rekindle their interest in Brondby striker Mathias Kvistgaarden as they search for a replacement for Kyogo.

Brendan Rodgers was keen on signing Kvistgaarden during the last January transfer window as well as during the summer, but a deal never materialised. This report states that interest hasn’t disappeared, and Celtic are ready to make a new offer to Brondby for the striker, who is valued at £8 million.

Kvistgaarden, who has been dubbed “exciting” by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, has told Brondby that he plans to leave the club either in this transfer window or the summer and is keen on a move to Scotland, meaning the Danish side may be forced to sell if they receive a suitable offer.

This is good news for the Hoops, as Kyogo’s potential departure would see them heavily depend on Adam Idah as their senior centre-forward. With Champions League knockout football on the way, Rodgers will be keen to add more firepower to his side, and given Kvistgaarden has scored 10 goals in 15 league games this season, he could be the perfect new arrival. The 22-year-old, who has 17 Denmark under-21 caps to his name, can also play on either side of the centre-forward, meaning he provides more options for Rodgers in attack.

'A player of his talent must do much more!' – French media rips into 'nonchalant' Mason Greenwood as Marseille forward handed brutal 3/10 rating after damaging defeat to Monaco

Mason Greenwood was slammed by the French media after his "nonchalant" display for Marseille in their 3-0 loss against AS Monaco on Saturday.

Greenwood receives criticism from French mediaHad a disappointing outing against MonacoMarseille went down 3-0 in Ligue 1 clashFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED IN THE MATCH?

Marseille dropped to third in the Ligue 1 table after they suffered their fourth loss in their last five league matches on Saturday. Former Liverpool star Takumi Minamino opened the scoring for Monaco in the 34th minute before Breel Embolo doubled their lead just minutes before the hour mark. Ex-Chelsea midfielder Denis Zakaria then scored the final goal of the match in the 82nd minute from the penalty spot to complete his team's 3-0 win in front of a happy Stade Louis II crowd.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesHOW DID THE FRENCH MEDIA RATE GREENWOOD'S PERFORMANCE?

Greenwood, who has impressed since joining Marseille from Manchester United last summer, had a night to forget as he lost the ball 18 times and looked rattled by Monaco's aggressive game plan.

rated Greenwood's performance at just 3 out of 10 and wrote: "After a gem last week against Toulouse, the former Manchester United winger had a very (very) complicated match. Out of touch and caught out on his rare initiatives, he too often suffered from AS Monaco's intensity. Guilty of a major technical lapse, he was nevertheless very close to equalising but fell to the Monaco goalkeeper. Otherwise, he was too little involved, and he disappointed once again."

was even more brutal in their assessment as they gave Greenwood a 2.5 and wrote: "A ghostly match for the former Mancunian, who contributed almost nothing offensively on the Louis-II pitch."

also rated Greenwood at 3 out of 10 as they stated: "He hit the target with both shots, but a player of his talent must do much more. While he often hears this criticism, it doesn't seem to affect him, as his performances remain overshadowed by his nonchalance, which no flash of lightning has come to erase."

WHAT ARE THE FANS SAYING ON SOCIAL?

The fans, too, had their say on Greenwood and Marseille's dismal show as they reacted to the club's embarrassing loss on social media.

A fan with the X handle @oinnessone1 wrote: "Greenwood he plays in a position where he is free to move wherever he wants, on the contrary he has the keys to the game and I still don't see how that prevents him from thinking. He always ends up doing the same thing."

@Bendu974 added: "Get rid of [Roberto] De Zerbi and his 15-year-old lineups and Greenwood, who's been thinking elsewhere for a long time. We won't miss you!!!"

@Pastaga13500 said: "Greenwood, aside from an individual feat, is a complete blank in the game."

GettyWHAT COMES NEXT FOR GREENWOOD?

The 23-year-old could leave the Ligue 1 side in the summer as he has reportedly attracted interest from Saudi Arabia, with a €90 million (£76.5m/$100m) offer now on the table for the winger ahead of the summer window. For now, though he will remain focused on his duties at Marseille, with De Zerbi's side set to return to action on April 19 when they face Montpellier in another crucial Ligue 1 clash.

Liverpool now battling to beat Jurgen Klopp in race to sign "powerful" gem

Still looking to commence their January business, Liverpool are now reportedly battling against former manager Jurgen Klopp to sign a future star who is attracting plenty of interest.

Liverpool transfer news

Having opted not to splash the cash in the summer transfer window upon Arne Slot’s arrival, some may have expected the Reds to hand the Dutchman one or two reinforcements this month, but so far that has not been the case. Top of the Premier League and top of the Champions League – and both very convincingly so – those at Anfield have so far decided that Slot’s squad good enough as it is.

Liverpool "in the transfer race" for £85m ace who could revive Nunez

Manchester United and Chelsea are also in the race for this “special” talent.

ByAngus Sinclair Jan 25, 2025

Instead, Liverpool have been forced to think about potential departures this month. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are still yet to put pen to paper on new deals and that has only sparked exit rumours, particularly in the case of Alexander-Arnold. With Real Madrid’s interest no secret these days, the right-back has seen his name linked to the Bernabeu since the beginning of the month.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

That’s not to say no rumours over potential incomings have arrived, however. According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Liverpool are now battling Klopp to sign Ryan One from Sheffield United. The 18-year-old has impressed for the Blades and earned interest from Anfield, Brighton & Hove Albion and Red Bull clubs RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg as a result.

Whether the Reds make their move as early as this month remains to be seen, but seeing Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes square off against Klopp in the transfer market would certainly be an interesting scenario a year on from when the German announced he would leave at the end of the last campaign. That said, One could be a player to watch in the final days of the winter window.

"Powerful" One is a rising star

At just 18 years old, One is already making an impact for Sheffield United’s senior side under Chris Wilder, scoring once in two starts and 10 appearances in the Championship. As things stand, the only way is up for the young forward who may yet have the biggest decision of his career so far to make in the coming weeks or months.

The striker role is certainly one that is up for grabs at Liverpool, even for a player as young as One. With Darwin Nunez yet to convince, Diogo Jota proving unreliable thanks to his injury record and Luis Diaz merely a square peg in a round hole, any forward who is good enough should be considered ready enough to lead the line at Anfield.

One has unsurprisingly found himself at the centre of praise in recent months, including from Scottish football experts Scotball, who described the young Scotland forward as “powerful” at the start of the month.

A player to watch, One could find himself playing Premier League football with or without Sheffield United by the time that next season arrives.

Suryakumar blitz lifts India to top of Group A

Kohli plays support role with sedate fifty, before Jadeja derails Hong Kong chase

Robin Uthappa: ‘Suryakumar’s ability to change his shot at last second standout’

India 192 for 2 (Suryakumar 68*, Kohli 59*, Ghazanfar 1-19) beat Hong Kong 152 for 5 (Hayat 41, Kinchit 30, Bhuvneshwar 1-15, Jadeja -15) by 40 runs
A blazing half-century from Suryakumar Yadav, and a more sedate one from Virat Kohli, helped India cruise into the Super 4 round of the Asia Cup as they beat Hong Kong by 40 runs in Dubai. The victory ensured India would finish as the top team in Group A.After being put in, India struggled to force the pace on the ball on a sluggish surface. But as the game progressed, the pitch seemed to ease out. Suryakumar cashed in on that, smashing six fours and as many sixes to post 68 not out in just 26 balls. Kohli, too, found his timing after a slow start and finished unbeaten on 59 off 44. His knock included one four and three sixes. The pair added an unbroken 98 in just 42 balls, propelling India to 192 for 2.From there on, it was always going to be an uphill task for Hong Kong. Despite scoring 51 for 2 in the powerplay, they were behind the asking rate, and once the field spread out, their scoring rate dipped further. In the end, they could manage only 152 for 5.However, it was a far from perfect game for India. Apart from a slow start, Avesh Khan and Arshdeep Singh looked off colour. Avesh gave away 53 from his four overs, and Arshdeep went for 44 from his quota. Both picked up a wicket each, though.India’ slow start
Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul started slowly; India managed just six runs in the first two overs. Rohit broke the shackles by jumping out of his crease to seamer Haroon Arshad and launching him for a straight six. Rahul joined him later in the over when he dispatched a free hit over deep midwicket. Off the last ball, Rohit hit a four to make it 22 from the over.Ayush Shukla broke the stand in the fifth over when Rohit mistimed an offcutter to mid-on. He scored 21 off 13 balls but Rahul was struggling for timing at the other end. Kohli too found it difficult to get going. At one stage, Rahul was on 21 off 25, Kohli on 12 off 14, and India hadn’t managed a boundary for 22 balls. Rahul ended that drought with a six off Aizaz Khan but despite that India only got to 70 for 1 at the ten-over mark.Suryakumar Yadav smoked 68 not out off just 26 balls•AFP/Getty ImagesSuryakumar lights up the night
Kohli showed signs of aggression after the halfway stage, hitting Mohammad Ghazanfar for a four and a six in successive overs from the legspinner. Ghazanfar, though, ended Rahul’s struggle by having him caught behind for 36 off 39 balls. That brought Suryakumar to the middle, and he swept the first two balls he faced, from Yasim Murtaza, for fours. That was just the teaser, and soon he showed his full range. In the 16th over, he hit Aizaz over short third for four before scooping him for a six, off consecutive balls. A couple of overs later, he flicked Shukla over deep square leg to move to 41 off just 17 balls.Kohli, meanwhile, brought up his fifty off 40 balls. Three balls after reaching the landmark, he slog-swept Ehsan Khan for a 91-metre six but it paled in comparison to Suryakumar’s dazzling strokeplay. In the last over of the innings, Suryakumar hit Haroon’s first three deliveries for sixes – the second one took him to his fifty off just 22 balls and was arguably the shot of the day. He had initially shaped up for a scoop but seeing Haroon bowl it full and wide, he changed his shot and lofted it over deep cover. The fourth ball was a dot, and Suryakumar pulled the next one over short fine leg for another six. Haroon escaped with a couple off the final ball but India already had a daunting total.Ravindra Jadeja hurt Hong Kong with a run-out and the wicket of Babar Hayat•AFP/Getty ImagesSpinners put brakes on after Babar Hayat’s brisk start
Arshdeep bounced out Yasim in the second over but Babar Hayat’s power-hitting took Hong Kong past 50 in the sixth over. The tall right-hander smashed Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Avesh over their heads for a six off each. In the sixth over, he took on Arshdeep, hitting him for two fours.India found some relief when Nizakat Khan was run out on the last ball of the powerplay. It was a free hit that Nizakat steered towards backward point before taking a couple of steps down the pitch. But Ravindra Jadeja nailed a direct hit before he could get back in.Yuzvendra Chahal and Jadeja then conceded only 14 in the next four overs. That left Hong Kong with a monumental task of getting 128 from the last ten.The chase peters out
At the end of the powerplay, Babar was on 29 off 17 but could manage only 12 off the next 18 balls he faced. Jadeja sent him back when he miscued a cut to backward point. Kinchit Shah and Aizaz offered some resistance by adding 31 off 22 balls for the fourth wicket but it was too little to trouble India. In the final two overs, Zeeshan Ali and Scott McKechnie hit a flurry of boundaries but that was too little too late to have an impact on the final result.

Lamichhane 'upset and unwell' by arrest warrant issued in his name

Nepal legspinner says he will return home to ‘defend against false complaint’ when his health improves

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Sep-2022Two weeks after the Nepal police issued an arrest warrant in Sandeep Lamichhane’s name, the cricketer has come out with a statement that the case has made him unwell, affecting him mentally and physically and added that he is planning to return to Nepal when his health improves. When news of Lamichhane’s arrest warrant was made public – for alleged coercion of another person – on September 8, he was in the West Indies, taking part in the Caribbean Premier League. Back then, he had said he would leave the CPL and would be returning to home to face the “baseless allegations”. This latest statement, put out on Monday, suggests Lamichhane is yet to arrive in Nepal.”The news that a warrant has been issued in my name and that the complaint against me has been lodged, made me upset and unwell,” Lamichhane’s said in a Facebook post written in Nepali on September 26. “I was not able think about what to do and what not to do.”All these things affected me mentally on one hand and on the other hand, I had to go through illness, and due to mental stress and ill health I kept myself in isolation. I have been mentally and physically affected by the portrayal and I have reached a state of imbalance and I have been bringing myself back to a normal state under the advice of doctors. My health is gradually improving, and I am planning to return to Nepal as soon as possible to defend against the false complaint against me.”Lamichhane once again reiterated that the accusations against him were “false” and had “severely damaged” his “character”.”I will fight the legal battle against the false accusations. As far as I understand, according to the constitution of Nepal, I am innocent until proven guilty. I also understand that the constitution provides for the right to live with dignity, the right against torture, the right to privacy, the right to health and the right to consult with my legal practitioner.”Lamichhane, 22, is by far Nepal’s most high-profile cricketer, and the only one to have played in T20 leagues around the world, including the IPL, the Big Bash League, the Pakistan Super League, the Bangladesh Premier League, the Lanka Premier League and the CPL.He is also the world’s second-fastest bowler to 50 ODI wickets and third-fastest to 50 T20I wickets, and last played competitive cricket in the T20I series against Kenya, in August 2022. After that, he was set to represent Jamaica Tallawahs in the CPL but was unable to take the field.Lamichhane was Nepal’s captain at the time of the arrest warrant, a position he has since lost having been suspended by the board. At the time, Cricket Association of Nepal’s acting secretary Prashant Vikram Malla said that his suspension would remain in place pending a complete investigation.

19 y/o Sunderland ace suffers back injury and will miss multiple matches

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has delivered a concerning Sunderland injury update, with one player set to miss a chunk of action in the coming weeks.

Huge win for Sunderland away to Middlesbrough

The Black Cats secured arguably one of their biggest and most impressive victories of the season so far on Monday evening, winning 3-2 away to local rivals Middlesbrough.

A tough game on paper saw Regis Le Bris’ Sunderland side fall behind in the first half, but they showed great character to overcome that deficit and get over the finish line, thanks to a late Ryan Giles own goal, following an earlier strike from Dan Neil and a sublime finish from Wilson Isidor.

The Black Cats’ win means they remain fourth in the Championship table, but most importantly, they are back to only being three points adrift of Sheffield United in second place, as they chase automatic promotion back to the Premier League this season.

It was a positive January transfer window for Sunderland, with Enzo Le Fee coming in as an exciting signing on loan from Roma, while Jayden Danns has also now completed a temporary move from Liverpool until the end of the campaign, adding more firepower to Le Bris’ squad.

Reporter drops worrying Sunderland injury news

Writing on X on Tuesday, Downie confirmed that new Sunderland signing Danns has returned to Merseyside for treatment on a back issue, with the length of his absence unknown at this point, news which has since been confirmed by the clubs.

The Black Cats’ capture of Danns is exciting news for supporters, considering he is seen as a young player with a huge amount of potential, already scoring three goals in nine appearances in a Liverpool shirt.

This update is an undoubted worry, however, with Le Bris no doubt desperate to have him involved as soon as possible, giving his side an extra goal threat, whether that be from the start or the substitutes’ bench.

Hopefully, Danns’ issue is nothing serious, but it is worth noting that the 19-year-old missed a big spell of action earlier this season for the same reason, hurting his back during pre-season and not having the chance to properly impress Arne Slot.

If this back problem was serious, though, Sunderland simply wouldn’t have sanctioned the move, so it would be a surprise if the young striker wasn’t only missing for a short period of time.

Havertz joins Gabriel Jesus on the treatment table long-term, with the latter also playing his last game of the season after he ruptured his ACL in their FA Cup third round defeat to Man United on penalties earlier this season.

To make matters worse, Arsenal remain without both Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, leaving Arteta very short of attacking options in the final third. In his latest pre-match press conference, Arteta suggested that the likes of Raheem Sterling and Leandro Trossard could be set to play a variety of roles.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetalooksdejected

“Yes and for other players as well, and for Leo [Trossard] to probably play in two or three different positions,” said Arteta, when asked about Sterling being in line for more minutes.

“It’s between all of us, we have mentioned that many times. It’s adding value from different players. It’s probably been a little bit different in adapting to the qualities and the strengths of our players so go for it, the spirit is pretty certainly the same.”

In any case, Arsenal have been criticised for their transfer failings as a result of this crisis, with the north Londoners also looking like outside Premier League title contenders at best, given Liverpool are seven points clear.

Pundit Teddy Sheringham even suggested that Arsenal selling Eddie Nketiah last summer was a big mistake, as they appear in need of a clinical scorer.

Arsenal make contact with Antonio Cordero's agents ahead of possible free deal

Interim sporting director Jason Ayto and Arsenal are already looking ahead to next summer in an attempt to bolster the squad’s attacking final third, with Malaga sensation Antonio Cordero believed to be a serious target.

The 18-year-old, who’s registered 10 goal contributions across 2024/2025 (four goals, six assists), is a player of sky-high potential. A host of top English sides, including Newcastle United, Tottenham, West Ham, Aston Villa, Brighton, Nottingham Forest.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetacelebrates after the match

That is according to The Boot Room and journalist Graeme Bailey, who report that Arsenal have made contact with Cordero’s agents for talks recently.

While there is a belief that Newcastle are the outright favourites right now, with terms apparently agreed, Arsenal remain in contention – as no transfer is officially complete until the player signs on the dotted line.

Football Analyst Ben Mattinson, taking to X, explained exactly why Arteta’s side have taken such a keen interest with Cordero’s contract expiring this summer.

“Antonio Cordero is another exciting winger in Segunda División,” wrote Mattinson. “Antoñito is direct + comfortable either wing. Quality crossing on either foot. At RW, he’s good at bombing down the line, keeping the ball away from the defender and whipping/floating in crosses on his right foot.

“At LW, Antoñito Cordero is comfortable driving outside onto his left to cross but also loves to cut inside to shoot. With a fairly high shot volume (over 3 shots per 90), he won’t hesitate to shoot. Off the ball he looks to stretch the running in behind. Good decision maker.”
