Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney is hoping to see his four sons tread a similar path to the one that made him a global superstar. Eldest son Kai is showing plenty of promise as another goalscorer in the Red Devils’ academy system.

Wayne is, however, not able to take in as many games as he would like. He has been busy with playing and coaching careers for the most part, but is also unable to blend into the background whenever paying a visit to grassroots fixtures.

WHAT COLEEN ROONEY SAID

Wife Coleen has told of raising her children in the public eye: “I’ve got to make them aware that with social media, things can come back around again. My eldest is 15, he’s at a football academy [in Manchester] where they have social media workshops. They’re told if they put anything online now and you’re in the public eye, it can affect you later on.

“But I think our kids grew up with it. There’s certain things that it does affect – there were times when the kids have said, when Wayne was playing, ‘Can Dad stay at home?’ because we didn’t get around the theme park. Or, ‘He’s not watching me play football because he’s being asked for selfies.’

“He’s grateful for fans too, so it’s a hard situation. We’ve obviously made them aware of things as they’ve got older and started to understand things.”

Wayne currently has plenty of spare time on his hands, having flopped in his latest managerial role at Plymouth, but may be prevented from watching his children in action. He will get ample opportunity to do just that if any of the Rooney boys go on to make the professional ranks.

Better than Potter: West Ham eyeing up 3x title winner to replace Lopetegui

Julen Lopetegui’s time at West Ham United hasn’t gone exactly to plan, taking over from David Moyes this summer, and aiming to transform the Hammers from a counter-attacking side, into a more control-based, possession-heavy team.

West Ham sit 14th in the Premier League after 14 games played, winning four times, drawing three, and losing seven already this season.

Lopetegui’s side are averaging 46.4% possession, the eighth lowest total in the division, are taking 14.7 shots per game (6th highest), and are conceding 15.8 shots per game (4th most).

Lopetegui’s future seems to be in trouble, as West Ham are already drawing up shortlists of new candidates to take over from the 58-year-old Spanish coach, one of which has been out of a job since the 2022/23 season.

Graham Potter to West Ham

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, one name on the West Ham manager shortlist is Graham Potter, who was sacked by Chelsea in the 2022/23 season, having only taken charge of 31 games as manager, averaging 1.42 points per match.

graham-potter-chelsea-leeds-united-manager-live-updates-marcelo-bielsa

The English coach had Chelsea averaging around 58.8% possession, taking 12.7 shots per game (only scoring 38 goals that season), and conceding 11.5 shots per game.

Whilst the numbers were not terrible, their league position was, finishing 12th that campaign after sacking Potter, trying to navigate turbulent times under new ownership.

While he is still considered a top manager, and is clearly taking his time to pick the right job before jumping back in, the one concern that could be had around Potter is the fact he hasn’t had a job since that tough Chelsea time, and how he will bounce back from it.

But perhaps the best name on the short list isn’t actually Potter but instead is Sergio Conceicao, the most experienced of the three names discussed by the Hammers board, and an option that could bring real stability to the club in a season of struggle.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast's Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

How Sergio Conceicao compares to Graham Potter

Possessing a brand of “heavy metal” football in the words of scout Antonio Mango, Conceicao could well be the perfect manager for West Ham, being adaptable – much like Potter – in his ability to go from a control-based 4-2-3-1, into a deeper 4-4-2 block, and change game plans based on the opposition and scoreline in a game.

This is a huge factor in such a competitive league, especially for a club like West Ham, who have a squad capable of controlling games against the bottom half of the table, but perhaps need a different approach when facing top-half sides, who possess slightly more on-ball quality. That was particularly evident when the Irons were dispatched 5-2 by Arsenal a few days ago.

Conceicao’s best period was clearly at FC Porto, managing there from 2017-2024, winning three Primeira Liga titles (2017/18, 2019/20 and 2021/22), four Taca de Portugal’s (2019/20, 2021/22, 2022/23 and 2023/24), one Taca da Liga (2022/23), and three Supertaca Candido de Oliveira’s.

During the 2023/24 season, Porto averaged 63.6% possession (the most in their division), and only conceded 8.3 shots per game (the 2nd fewest in their division), showing Conceicao’s ability to coach a defensive unit and control games with more of the ball, two factors West Ham wish to improve upon since moving on from Moyes. Those numbers are also far better than the ones achieved by Potter when he was at Stamford Bridge.

Football manager Sergio Conceicao

With Lopetegui’s struggles already this season, West Ham need to ensure this next appointment can provide stability to their current squad and drag them away from the relegation zone.

Conceicao seems the best fit to do this, bringing extra defensive stability compared to Potter, and therefore making him the ideal appointment for the Hammers.

Harmanpreet credits team psychologist for bringing her out of her 'shell'

“After that I got clear ideas, those things really helped me in the last two-three games,” says India’s vice-captain, who struck a century in the warm-ups

Harmanpreet: ‘More comfortable batting at No. 4 than No. 5’

India vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur has admitted she was “going into my shell” when she was struggling with form, and that speaking to Dr Mugdha Bavare, the mental-health conditioning coach who is traveling with the team, helped her get “clear ideas” ahead of the World Cup. Harmanpreet echoed her captain Mithali Raj’s words, stressing on the importance of having a mental-health professional around, especially before big tournaments. The senior batter had been enduring a rough patch in ODIs in the last few years, making 444 runs in 21 matches since 2019, averaging 31.71 with just two fifties. During the recent series against hosts New Zealand leading up to the World Cup, she made scores of 10, 10 and 13 before scoring a 66-ball 63 in India’s only win in the series in the fifth ODI. She followed it up with a 104 off 114 in the warm-up match against South Africa and did not take part in the next warm-up against West Indies with sore wrists.Related

“Mugdha ma’am is traveling with us, she has been helping us a lot,” Harmanpreet said during a press conference on Wednesday. “Especially during the last four games which we played against New Zealand when even my performance wasn’t going too well and I was going into my shell. The World Cup was coming up and it is very important, as we all know. After that, she spoke to me and as the talks were happening I realised that I was also looking forward to talking to her. I got the solutions from the talks we had.”There wasn’t a lot of awareness about it before and there was a lot of pressure to put up performances, things were happening around. After that I got clear ideas, those things really helped me in the last two-three games. I think the rest of the players are also getting help because I can see she’s continuously talking to all the players, which is important and that will really help us.”Harmanpreet to bat at No. 5 in the World Cup

Harmanpreet Kaur will bat at No. 5 in the upcoming World Cup despite expressing she preferred the No. 4 spot, a position which captain Mithali Raj now occupies. Harmanpreet has better ODI numbers at No. 4, where she batted until recently; she averages 40.45 there for her 1618 runs in 48 innings with a strike rate of 70.22, whereas at No. 5 she averages 26.84 in 38 innings while striking at 66.12. Even her recent half-century against New Zealand came in at No. 4.

“I’m more comfortable at No. 4 than No. 5, but we need to play according to the team’s demands,” she said. “We did discuss on that but as of now I’m going to play at No. 5 only, maybe in the future we can [make changes] according to the match situation but right now I don’t think I’ll be playing at No. 4, No. 5 will be my number.”

Harmanpreet has been copping criticism for not making a mark with big scores since her scintillating 171* against Australia in the semi-final of the 2017 World Cup, most recently from former India captain Diana Edulji who had said that Harmanpreet can’t survive in the Indian team just on that knock. Since that iconic innings, she has averaged just 28.75 with the bat. While she is well aware of the criticism coming her way, Harmanpreet feels it’s because she has set the standard of being a big-knock player and that her smaller match-winning efforts aren’t being highlighted as a result.”I know people talk more about my 171 knock,” she said. “I think I set myself a standard with that knock, I know I can play that kind of cricket. Maybe that’s why my smaller crucial knocks of 30, 40, 50 – for whichever team [I play] are not getting enough importance. I don’t think I judge myself with numbers. For me, what is important is, irrespective of how much ever I score it should be enough for my team, irrespective of whether it is 100 runs or 10 runs. Numbers don’t matter to me, what matters is whenever the team needs me I should be there.”She also expressed her disappointment in not being able to find form in the last few years, calling it “painful” to not being able to make runs despite trying her best.”What’s painful is when I don’t make runs. As a cricketer, you are always looking for runs. Nothing is more painful than getting on the field and you’re trying to give your 200% and unfortunately you’re not able to deliver at that level, as you are expecting from yourself, forget about people who have hopes on me. I think more painful is not getting runs more than other things.”It’s not about a big player or small player feeling – it’s the same for every player. I think when these things happened, Mugdha played a very big role when I was not getting runs. She came to me, she spoke to me about what’s happening and how I can find a way out and my family was supporting me, they were continuously talking to me. Those things helped me a lot.”

The 17-year-old winger was being monitored by United for months, and the early signs pointed towards a potential move to Old Trafford in the summer. However, financial constraints and uncertainty over his long-term role led the Red Devils to hesitate, opening the door for Chelsea to make their move. Meanwhile, the Blues orchestrated a “secret blitz” at Sporting, ensuring the teenager was committed to their project ahead of any further manoeuvres by United and ultimately snapped him up for €48 million (£40m/$52m).

The manager expressed confidence in the youngster’s potential, urging him to keep "evolving, learning and improving" his game. The Chelsea boss also emphasised that the club views him as a crucial part of their long-term vision, reinforcing their trust in his ability.

10x ball lost: The next Wolves boss must ruthlessly ditch 5/10 Wolves dud

A match that was dubbed ‘El Sackico’ in the build-up ended up going the way of Julen Lopetegui’s West Ham United on Monday night as Wolverhampton Wanderers fell to another crushing defeat in the Premier League.

This loss could be the final straw for Gary O’Neil, who was lucky to still be occupying his dug-out at the London Stadium arguably, having overseen a dire 4-0 defeat to Everton the match before this equally as gloomy away day.

Wolves would have felt hard done by in a number of incidents in the 2-1 loss, as penalty shouts passed them by, but there were still notable underperformers for the Old Gold that let their side down on the big occasion, away from any decisions going against them.

Notable Wolves underperformers vs West Ham

Away from the likes of Matheus Cunha, Matt Doherty and Rayan Ait-Nouri who all shone for the away side – with Doherty even netting his team’s equaliser before Jarrod Bowen’s stunning winner – other faces for O’Neil’s men such as Joao Gomes really underwhelmed.

Introduced into the XI in place of Goncalo Guedes, the 23-year-old notably struggled to ever get going in the high-stakes affair, with only two of his 14 duels being successfully won on the night.

He would also miss a glorious opportunity in the first half after being found in space by eventual goalscorer Doherty, with that strike perhaps changing the complexion of the contest if it had gone in.

Alongside the Brazilian in the centre of the park, Mario Lemina also put in a sub-par showing, as the Old Gold captain failed to impress in attempting to make things happen for his side with just one key pass registered all match.

Sam Johnstone will also be worried he will be axed for Jose Sa to return for his side’s next game versus Ipswich Town – regardless of who is in charge or not – with the former Manchester United man only making two saves away from leaking two goals.

But, whoever does take on the reins for the Tractor Boys clash – or later down the line – should also be preparing to drop Santiago Bueno, who didn’t leave the Hammers match with his head held high whatsoever.

Bueno's performance in numbers

With Craig Dawson out of the XI after his horror show at Goodison Park, Bueno would have hoped he could offer more stability at the back in his absence, away from the experienced head scoring two own goals versus the Toffees.

Whilst it wasn’t quite as nightmarish as that outing, the Uruguayan did still look shaky in the heart of defence, with possession squandered a total of ten times by the South American among other worrying numbers.

As can be seen when glancing at the table above, it was a night to forget for Bueno in terms of his play out from the back, with only a 74% pass accuracy in-tact come the full-time whistle after he had waywardly given up the ball.

He was also at fault for Tomas Soucek’s crucial opener being far easier than it should have been, as the Czech Republic international found himself surprisingly free to loop home a header from a corner, after a whole host of Wolves shirts left him in acres of room.

O’Neil must have thought his team could at least salvage a point when Doherty did equalise, but it wasn’t to be as the porous Old Gold defence slipped up once more when Bowen delivered a sucker punch just moments after the pressurised game had become level.

Handed out a low 5/10 rating after the game by Birmingham World journalist Charlie Haffenden, Bueno will be worried that a new manager replacing O’Neil could see him ditched from the XI moving forward.

There will surely be a sense of inevitability on the 44-year-old’s end that his time in the West Midlands is up, with ‘El Sackico’ perhaps living up to its name.

Atletico were dumped out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage in midweek after a penalty shootout defeat to their local rivals. The game's big talking point surrounded Alvarez's spot-kick, which was ruled out by VAR for a double touch as the Argentine slipped. Several days on from that agonising defeat, manager Simeone has not held back on the matter.

When asked how he and his team felt after the penalty incident, he said: "I usually always talk about Barcelona. This time, the situation warrants an explanation of my feelings. It's anger, rage, injustice… but from my position, the only thing I have the power to do is work so the team can continue competing as it does. We understand our fans, and obviously the feeling that all of us at Atlético have is anger, rage, and injustice."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The incident caused such a stir that UEFA said it will start talks with FIFA and IFAB to determine if this rule should be "reviewed in cases where a double touch is clearly unintentional". While they are out of the Champions League, they are still fighting for the league title and the Copa del Rey so there is plenty to play for this season.

The Gunners are certain to be without Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu, who are both nursing long-term injuries, but Arsenal have numerous other potential absentees to deal with – Jurrien Timber, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Gabriel Magalhaes, Thomas Partey and Riccardo Calafiori all injury doubts ahead of Monaco (Premier Injuries).

“It is what it is,” said Arteta on Arsenal’s injury problems in his pre-Monaco press conference.

“At the end, if we have to accept the challenge and its opportunities for other players to do that. In the ideal scenario, we have to be in charge to make those decisions because it’s forcing us to make it for the wrong reasons, but as well, we need to accept the reality and move forwards.

“I’m really happy with the way that we are playing, and the good thing is that it’s not conditioning the team in such a way that we have to become a different team. So, I’m very pleased with that, the way the team is adapting, the way players are making the effort to play in different positions and hopefully the ideal situation will come up very soon and we can do what we want.”

Injuries have been a reoccurring theme of their season so far, as has their inability to score from open play in recent weeks.

The mis-firing Gabriel Jesus, who’s scored just once in all competitions this term, is proving unreliable in front of goal – leading to Arsenal targeting a new centre-forward in 2025.

Arsenal believe Dusan Vlahovic is the "ideal" striker for Mikel Arteta

According to Italian news outlet Tuttosport, Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic is on the club’s radar as a potential solution to give them more potency in the number nine area.

The £352,000-per-week Serbian’s deal expires in 2026, but that apparently won’t stop Juve from demanding around £69 million for his services, considering he’s bagged nine goals in 17 appearances across all competitions so far.

For Arteta’s part, Arsenal believe that Vlahovic is the “ideal” striker signing to “raise the team’s level”, but it is unclear whether they’d be willing or able to pay nearly £70 million for a centre-forward who is out of contract in under two years.

They also face stiff competition from Premier League rivals Chelsea and Man United, who are both on the lookout for a prolific new option up top.

Babar, Imam seal series victory after Pakistan's quicks shock Australia

Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf knocked the top of the visitor’s batting

Danyal Rasool02-Apr-2022After a month of Australia making Pakistan work for every run, wicket and win, here was the exception to the rule. In a rare lacklustre performance, Australia found themselves blown away by a dominant performance as they were crushed by nine wickets to seal a 2-1 series win.It came courtesy of a fiery fast bowling performance, and an unbeaten 190-run partnership between Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq. Pakistan had put Australia in to bat, skittling them out inside 42 overs for 210 before making light work of that target on a featherbed of a surface, with Imam and Babar making an unexperienced Australian bowling attack look particularly toothless. An undefeated 105 by Babar, his second consecutive hundred, and an unbeaten 89 from Imam helped Pakistan canter to a nine-wicket win with 73 balls to spare.Australia knew it was coming, and yet there seemed no way to stop it. A sensational – and yet by now, almost predictable – first over from Shaheen Shah Afridi got rid of Travis Head, dealing Australia a blow that left them groggy throughout the innings, and Haris Rauf removed Aaron Finch before Australia were off the mark.Magicians tend not to perform their tricks too often, but repetition doesn’t make Afridi any less inscrutable. It was a full toss that did for Head first up, but with the moving in the air, there was little the batter could do to prevent it crashing into off stump.Finch has struggled this series, and it showed in the way he tried to tackle Rauf, playing listlessly across the line and finding himself trapped plumb in front. Australia were yet to put a run on the board, and the discipline of Pakistan’s pace bowlers meant they couldn’t get off to the brisk start that characterised their first two innings. Rauf coaxed an edge out of Marnus Labuschagne early, and the normally fluid Ben McDermott got bogged down, managing just 14 in his first 34 balls.Australia looked to be rebuilding with a 53-run stand, but Zahid Mahmood drew a leading edge from Marcus Stoinis as Imam took a sharp catch, before Mohammad Wasim ended McDermott’s innings of attrition. A handy rearguard from Alex Carey and Cameron Green followed, with the batters capitalising on a drop in intensity from the hosts. The field spread out and easy singles are available, and with the frontline fast bowlers out of the attack, Australia were steadily rebuilding as they pushed towards a competitive total. Carey brought up a 55-ball half century two balls after a glorious six over cover drive off Wasim, and for the first time, Pakistan were on the back foot.Babar Azam punches down the ground•PCBThat ended soon after, though, when a bit of reverse swing did for Green as he heaved wildly across the line. It opened the floodgates, and four wickets fell for 18 runs as Rauf and Afridi returned to chip in. But in an entertaining six-over passage of play, Sean Abbott threw caution to the wind, swinging for the fences just about every delivery, riding his luck and further antagonising an increasingly irate Afridi. He managed the strike expertly; Adam Zampa never even got off the mark through the partnership, and by the time he chipped one to short third off Rauf, he’d scored a 40-ball 49. With the target set at 211, Abbott had given himself and his fellow bowlers something to work with. But two days out from a match that saw 348 prove inadequate, any hope Australia harboured of a series win hinged on early wickets, and several of them. It was in that department where Australia’s absences were really felt tonight. Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Ellis and Abbott simply don’t possess the qualities of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and especially Mitchell Starc to blast out an opposition, not least a top order as settled as Pakistan’s is right now.Fakhar Zaman fell for a brisk 17, but with the asking rate hovering around four, the match situation was primed for the more sedate and assured Babar and Imam. Babar being put down at short midwicket on 1 felt like a significant moment in the game, but Australia’s sloppiness in the early overs meant it didn’t come as much of a surprise. A couple of boundaries in the ninth over composed the Pakistan captain, and once that partnership established a foothold, any Australian optimism quickly fizzled out. What followed was a cavalcade of class from the two highest runscorers this series. They appeared to rotate the strike and find the boundaries at will against spin and seam alike. Imam skipped down the wicket to smash Zampa to cow corner, before Babar caressed boundaries off Green off the next two balls either side of the wicket as the target and asking rate shrunk by the over. At last, it looked like a contest between a full-strength home side and a depleted touring party stretched particularly thin.Babar was the more proactive partner, and got a 16th ODI hundred before the game was won, as the two old friends performed a little jig mid-run to celebrate. Imam, meanwhile, would be denied the chance for a third successive hundred simply because Pakistan ran out of runs to chase, and capped a sensational series by knocking off the winning runs, skipping down the wicket to send Labuschagne down the ground. On a tour where Australia have been blown away by Pakistan’s hospitality, tonight was the night the generosity finally ran out.
