Even better than Wan-Bissaka: West Ham looking at signing "incredible" RB

Despite having Vladimir Coufal at the club, a loyal servant who joined the club in 2020, West Ham United seem keen to acquire another right-sided full-back this summer, to replace the 31-year-old Czech Republic international.

One man on their list is Manchester United's Aaron Wan-Bissaka, however, talks seem to be on hold currently as United also look to strengthen in the right-back department, before allowing Wan-Bissaka to leave the club.

Vladimir Coufal.

However, West Ham won't just sit around waiting, as they start eyeing other potential options, looking to complete their new-look backline, already adding Max Kilman from Wolves, and looking to add another central defender alongside a right back.

West Ham transfer news

According to reports from the Telegraph, West Ham are eyeing a move for Newcastle defender, Kieran Trippier. As the Premier League is set to kick off next week, the Hammers are looking to move quickly in acquiring a new right back for their squad.

However, the reports state West Ham are yet to receive an answer on Trippier's availability, amid interest from Saudi Arabia for the 33-year-old right back.

brennan-johnson-kieran-trippier-tottenham-opinion

Trippier made 39 appearances in all competitions last season for Newcastle, scoring one goal, providing 11 assists, and contributing to 11 clean sheets in his 3,079 minutes played, often wearing the captain's armband too.

Trippier vs Wan-Bissaka comparison

Wan-Bissaka, who seems to have been the Hammers' number one target at right-back this summer, made 30 appearances for United in all competitions, providing three assists, and contributing to five clean sheets in his 2,411 minutes played.

The 26-year-old defender is often lauded for his defensive abilities, receiving the nickname "spider" due to his long legs and lunged tackles. Some – including Tottenham's James Maddison – have even said he is the best 1v1 defender in the Premier League.

These metrics show the huge improvement Trippier would make at West Ham by replacing Coufal, and shows just why Eddie Howe has praised Trippier as "incredible" in the past.

Having a player like the Englishman at right-back adds creativity to the side, averaging 2.62 key passes in the league last season, and averaging 2.39 key passes per 90 in the last 365 days, which ranks in the top 3% for full-backs on on the continent for this metric.

This, combined with the 6.33 progressive passes per 90, and nearly double the number of passes attempted per 90 with 85.9 per 90, compared to the 47.8 of Coufal and 49.8 of Wan-Bissaka, shows his involvement levels in the game, and how he aids build up and chance creation for his team.

All of this, without losing the defensive actions, as Trippier completes 2.30 tackles per 90, 1.65 blocks per 90, and wins 1.25 aerials per 90, beating both Wan-Bissaka and Coufal in these metrics, despite also having such prominent roles in the attacking phase.

The main drawback on a move for Trippier is that he is even older than Coufal at 33-years-old, and would therefore be another short-term move, whereas a move for Wan-Bissaka (26-years-old) would prove a longer-term buy, and could be a cornerstone in that West Ham side for the present and future.

Personal terms no issue: Man Utd closing in on their own Amadou Onana

The season's curtain-raiser is now less than 24 hours away, yet there is still much to be resolved on the transfer front for Manchester United, with it set to be more of the same when the lineups are revealed for Saturday's Community Shield showdown.

With Leny Yoro set to be sidelined for at least three months, the only new face in the matchday squad is likely to be Netherlands international, Joshua Zirkzee, with the Red Devils having thus far failed in their pursuit of Bayern Munich pair Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.

The lack of a midfield addition should also ensure that £350k-per-week man, Casemiro, is once again selected in front of the back four, with Saudi interest in the Brazilian – who looked like he was "in Soccer Aid" last season, according to Jamie Redknapp – having gone cold of late.

The prospect of enduring another season with the 32-year-old lining up alongside Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes is a worrying thought, although the latest indication is that the Old Trafford outfit are at least nearing a deal for a suitable successor.

Latest on Man Utd's search for a midfielder

According to a report from TEAMtalk, the Premier League side are said to be 'closing on' the signing of Burnley star, Sander Berge, with the Norwegian giant believed to have already said yes to the prospect of moving to Manchester.

The piece outlines that personal terms are not expected to be an issue for the 26-year-old, with the aim now to try and settle on a transfer fee with the Championship outfit.

Sander Berge for Burnley.

As per the report, the Clarets are said to be seeking roughly £30m for the 6 foot 5 midfielder, albeit with United hoping to wrap a deal for closer to £25m – including add-ons.

Why Sander Berge would be a good signing

At a time when Erik ten Hag's side is crying out for a proven, high-class replacement for Casemiro in the centre of the park, the thought of plucking a player from a recently relegated outfit is not a wholly exciting one.

Those of a United persuasion may well remember Berge's costly mistake in the meeting at Old Trafford just a few months ago, as the former Sheffield United man squandered possession in the lead-up to Antony's opener – although that crucial error did overshadow what was a largely classy display otherwise.

A powerful, imposing asset due to his height, the "unique" talent has been classed as the "complete midfielder" by former boss Chris Wilder, with his towering frame also masking how "deceptively fast he is", according to journalist Jonas Adnan Giaever.

It is that athleticism – among other traits – that has seen Berge likened to one of the statement signings of the summer in the form of Aston Villa's new £50m man, Amadou Onana, with the pair noted as similar players in the Premier League last season, as per FBref.

Also standing at 6 foot 5, Onana also shares Berge's flexibility to feature as a number six or in a more advanced box-to-box role, providing that dominant, physical presence as indicated in their respective aerial duels won.

Equally, what the above also indicates is the creative prowess that the duo share, as showcased by their progressive passing record, illustrating that they can also act as that midfield metronome in the centre of the park.

What is also striking about the two men is just how composed they are on the ball, with Sofascore outlining that they lost possession just 6.7 (Berge) and 6.8 (Onana) times per game on average in the top-flight in 2023/24. Casemiro, for comparison, lost the ball 12 times per game.

The comparison is noteworthy considering that the Belgian star was reportedly a player on United's radar earlier this summer, with rumours rife that Ten Hag and co had tried to hijack the 22-year-old's move to Villa Park in its late stages.

That reported attempt may have fallen flat, but INEOS could acquire the next best thing for almost half the price if a £25m deal can be agreed to prise Berge from Turf Moor.

Lanka Premier League postponed to November-December due to packed cricket calendar

The tournament was originally scheduled to run from July 30 to August 22

Andrew Fidel Fernando09-Jul-2021The Lanka Premier League has been postponed until at least late November, thanks largely to competing cricket tournaments or series being scheduled for the original window. The second edition of the LPL was supposed to run from July 30 to August 22.According to tournament director Ravin Wickramaratne, the announcement of the Kashmir Premier League (set to run from August 6 to 17), the CPL (which requires players to be free from August 12), the ECB’s The Hundred (which runs from July 21 to August 21), and another possible international series involving Bangladesh, have forced the LPL tournament organisers to rethink their timing. The first edition of the LPL featured a significant number of Pakistan players, but occasionally, teams were unable to field four foreign players. The unavailability of Pakistan and West Indies players in particular, would seriously hamper the Sri Lankan league. The LPL is also fighting fires on the franchise front. They have officially terminated two of the five franchises that took part last year, Dambulla Viiking and Colombo Kings both being cut from the second edition.A third franchise, Jaffna Stallions, are also on thin ice according to tournament organisers. They claim that Stallions’ owners have not been forthcoming with the Know Your Client (KYC) details that franchises are required to provide in order to be vetted by the ICC, while the franchise has also not been prompt with payments to the tournament organisers. Stallions, meanwhile, contend that they have been unwilling to make payments to the league with so much uncertainty surrounding the second edition’s timing. Stallions had won last year’s tournament.A postponement to November would mean that the tournament will be played soon after the T20 World Cup. It also means the island’s north-east monsoon is likely to be in operation. Last year’s edition was also played in November, but was only occasionally hampered by the weather.

With 55 Barcelona selections and 57 from Real Madrid, the Spanish giants have dominated the FIFPRO Men's World 11

GOAL US takes a look at the La Liga clubs, and why they have made such an impact on the FIFPRO Men's World 11 over the years

Count them. In the last 18 years, there have been 55 Barcelona players, and 57 Real Madrid players all-time in the FIFPRO Men's World 11. That's an average of six every year. Each squad over that same period has featured at least two players from either club. They have the record number of appearances by individuals in Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo – both of whom are again on the shortlist for the 2024 awards, which will be revealed next week.

This is what dominance looks like.

But it's not just the presence of two of the game's greats that accounts for the Spanish giants' influence here. Both clubs have either developed or bought talent, and won a lot of games because of them. Good players, well coached, tends to lead to silverware. And it's there that Barcelona and Real Madrid have excelled, and combined for the most appearances ever.

GOAL looks at how Barcelona and Real Madrid have dominated the FIFPRO Men's World 11 over the years.

AFPThe Messi effect

If you're counting, it's 17 years in a row. That's how many times Messi made the FIFPRO World 11. That's two more than anyone else. It accounts for pretty much every year he was a regular starter for Barca, all of his PSG years, and recognition for his 2022 World Cup win with Argentina.

And this would all make sense. Messi's numbers have always made for staggering reading, but it is worth reiterating them. To date, he has 850 career goals and 378 assists. He is averaging a goal contribution every 72 minutes. Even as his career is winding down at Inter Miami, he still managed 27 goal involvements in 19 regular season games.

At this point, he still walks into pretty much any team in the world. You'd be foolish to not have him around – even at the age of 37. There have, of course, been the all-time years. 100 goals in 12 months in 2012. Two trebles, in 2009 and 2015. But more than anything, this is about longevity and consistency. Want to know how Barcelona have had so many FIFPRO winners? They had the best guy to ever play the game in their side for 15 years.

AdvertisementAFPRonaldo, goal machine

The other Spanish giants, too, once had a decent footballer in their ranks. The GOAT debate raged on for so long when Messi and Ronaldo squared off against each other. Every year, it seemed that one had the edge over the other. Ronaldo was a serial winner in Europe – he has five Champions Leagues to Messi's four. He could do it in the big games, and he achieved international success before the Argentine.

He wasn't home grown, but fine-tuned and developed in Madrid. Gone was the tricky winger who maybe tried to do a bit too much with the ball. Instead, here was the razor-sharp edge of a lethal attack, a central striker who could do everything in the box – and smash one from range, too. A year older, and no less effective, Ronaldo remains elite.

Getty La Masia, the ultimate talent factory

Xavi: six times. Andres Iniesta: nine times. Carles Puyol: three times. Gerard Pique: four times.

Those are four graduates of Barca's famous La Masia academy, all of whom were regulars in FIFPRO World 11 sides.

There are many great talent factors in world football. PSG, Manchester City, Liverpool, Ajax and Real Madrid have all developed fine reputations for producing young players. But La Masia, Barca's academy, is on another level.

Those five are the standouts among the Catalans alone, but Messi also came out of the system. So too did Cesc Fabregas, Thiago Alcantara and others. Look at the best players in the world and many have connections to La Masia. That is by no means an accident. Homegrown talent has made Barca tick for years.

GettyGalactico money

Let's not discredit Madrid's academy here. They have, over the years, produced some fine players of their own. But while Barca have looked inwards, Los Blancos have looked beyond the Santiago Bernabeu.

It was, famously, Florentino Perez's pledge to sign the best player in the world every summer in the early 2000s. And so formed the Galacticos, a collection of the world's best and most expensive players, all kicking about in one stadium.

Say what you will about buying success, the quality here simply cannot be understated. Ronaldo is now the clear highlight, but there was also Zinedine Zidane, Fabio Cannavaro, Angel Di Maria and Kaka. All of them made at least one FIFPRO World 11 appearance.

Parish and Freedman submit Crystal Palace bid for 22 y/o to replace Andersen

With Joachim Andersen seemingly on his way to Fulham, Crystal Palace have reportedly turned their attention towards a late replacement, even submitting an opening offer.

Crystal Palace transfer news

After losing Michael Olise to Bayern Munich earlier this summer, it looked as though Palace were on course to keep hold of the rest of their stars, but late rumours could yet leave Oliver Glasner scrambling for options. According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Fulham have reached an agreement to sign Andersen in a deal worth £30m which will see the defender return to Craven Cottage four years on from leaving.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United are still chasing Marc Guehi's signature, with their most recent offer reportedly reaching the £65m mark, only to be rejected by those at Selhurst Park. In the final days of the window, there's every chance that Palace could lose their starting centre-back partnership, which has resulted in chairman Steve Parish and sporting director Dougie Freedman turning their attention to additions.

According to TEAMtalk, Crystal Palace have tabled an opening offer to sign Tomas Araujo, but have already seen their bid rejected by Benfica for the 22-year-old centre-back. Araujo is reportedly a top target for the Eagles, but it remains to be seen just how much their first offer was and whether they go back to negotiations with a second bid.

Concrete option: Crystal Palace working on deal to help replace Olise

Palace continue to make recruitments in order to replace Olise attacking output

ByConnor Holden Aug 22, 2024

Palace may soon have the money spare to sign such talents if both Andersen and Guehi depart this summer. With just over a week until the summer transfer window slams shut, however, any business will need to accelerate quickly in the coming days.

"Great" Araujo is ready for Premier League move

Whilst his ability to start for a side in Europe's top six leagues could have been questioned last season as he struggled to become a starter for Benfica, the same questions cannot be asked of Araujo this time around.

Tomas Araujo for Benfica.

The 22-year-old has started both of Benfica's opening two games in Liga Portugal, with one shock defeat against Famalicao and one comfortable victory over Casa Pia in that time. It's a rise that Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig saw on the cards, having praised Araujo in his loan spell at Gil Vincente in the 2022/23 campaign, describing the defender's spell there as "great".

Potentially left with a decision to make in the final days of the summer window, Araujo could quickly emerge to become an ideal replacement for Andersen who could realise his potential in the Premier League.

Australian players set for IPL exodus to the Maldives

There are close to 40 Australians in the IPL bubble comprising players, coaching staff and commentators

Daniel Brettig04-May-2021A mass exodus of Australian players, coaches and support staff to the Maldives is the expected remedy to a dilemma created by the postponement of the 2021 IPL and the current closure of the Australian border to citizens currently in India during its rampant Covid-19 outbreak. There are close to 40 Australians in the IPL bubble comprising players, coaching staff and commentators. The likes of Pat Cummins, Steven Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Ricky Ponting, Simon Katich and company are expected to join the commentator Michael Slater, who had already headed to the Maldives as a temporary post in the wake of blanket bans on entry to Australian citizens who have recently been in India, a state of play that will exist until at least May 15.The exceptions will be the likes of allrounder Dan Christian, who has a deal to play in the UK later this year. But the UK is currently allowing only its citizens and residents to fly in from India, so it remains to be seen what route he will take as Dubai – often a stopover between India and the UK – is not allowing flights from India either.Related

Kane Richardson and Zampa manage to make flight to Australia

“Once we flew out of Australia we knew we’d signed up for 14 days quarantine coming home so you feel a bit further from getting home, but when the hard border shut no one has ever experienced that before,” Cummins told on Fox Sports. “[It has] added a bit of anxiety for the Aussies over here but we signed up to play the tournament until the start of June so hopefully it all reopens on May 15 and we can get back.”Think we are all hoping we can get home like we would normally plan and the borders open on May 15, whether it’s [a] private [flight] or not we wouldn’t be allowed back in [at the moment]. Cricket Australia have been brilliant along with the ACA, they are working closely with the government to get the latest information, if we can’t get home it won’t be for lack of trying from all those involved.”ESPNcricinfo LtdCricket Australia’s interim chief executive Nick Hockley, team performance chief Ben Oliver and the Australian Cricketers’ Association CEO Todd Greenberg were all in urgent meetings on Tuesday night aimed at clarifying the situation for the freelancing players.”Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers’ Association understand the decision of the BCCI to indefinitely postpone the 2021 Indian Premier League for the safety and wellbeing of all participants,” a joint statement from CA and ACA said. “CA is in direct contact with the BCCI as they work through plans to ensure the safe accommodation and repatriation of Australian players, coaches, match officials and commentators back home to Australia. CA and the ACA respect the decision of the Australian Government to pause travel from India until at least May 15 and will not seek exemptions.CA and the ACA thank the BCCI for their efforts and cooperation for the safe repatriation of all participants at the IPL.”On April 27, Hemang Amin, the interim chief executive officer of the BCCI, had sent an email to all eight franchises saying the IPL understood players and support staff would be “apprehensive” about returning home. But he reassured them saying: “the BCCI will do everything to ensure that you reach your respective destinations seamlessly. Be rest assured that the tournament is not over for BCCI till each one of you has reached your home, safe and sound.”On Tuesday the BCCI was busy working out with franchises what was the best and safest way for players to reach home. On Monday, Hockley had stated that there had been “no suggestion at the moment” of a charter flight for the Australians in the IPL.On Monday Slater had condemned the Australian government’s decision to bar all travelers from India, including its own citizens until May 15. “If our government cared for the safety of Aussies they would allow us to get home,” an indignant Slater wrote on Twitter, addressing the Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison. “It’s a disgrace!! Blood on your hands PM. How dare you treat us like this. How about you sort out [the] quarantine system. I had government permission to work on the IPL but I now have government neglect.”And for those who think this is a money exercise, well, forget it. This is what I do for a living and I have not made a penny having left early. So please stop the abuse and think of the thousands dying in India each day. It’s called empathy. If only our government had some.”Adam Zampa, Kane Richardson and Andrew Tye had been among the Australian cricketers who had managed to exit India before the IPL was paused and the Australian border shut. Morrison called for patience from citizens currently locked outside their own country on a television interview with Nine on Tuesday morning.”I thank all of those who are in this difficult situation for their patience and their understanding,” Morrison said. “I am working to bring them home safely. I am going to take decisions that I believe will protect Australia from a third wave and help me to be able to reach out and bring more Australians safely home from places where they are in difficult situations.””I’d just ask them [the cricketers], like the many Australians that are in India at present, to be patient and understanding. This is a two-week pause. It’s not a permanent pause, it’s not a four-month lockdown.”New Zealand players at the IPL
New Zealand recently lifted its travel ban for India but there are limited flights between the two countries, and the New Zealand players will have to undergo a 14-day quarantine whenever they get home. NZC issued a statement saying it was liaising with different authorities to find a solution.”NZC remains in contact with the New Zealand contingent in the Indian Premier League. The players are in a relatively safe environment and those within affected teams are in isolation,” the statement said. “We’ll continue to liaise with the BCCI, the ECB and New Zealand government authorities in terms of managing their situation – but at this juncture it’s too early to discuss potential options.”

Wolves have endured a tough start to the 2024/25 campaign having won just two matches out of their first 15 outings in the Premier League and find themselves 19th in the league with just nine points. The poor start has put manager Gary O'Neil's position under a ton of scrutiny, although, the club have clarified that they are prepared to grant him some more time before deciding on his future. Derby eye deadline move for "real handful" who has 3 goals against the Rams

Derby County are interested in signing a new forward before Friday’s 11 p.m. deadline who has scored three goals and never lost against the Rams, according to a new report.

The Rams have started life back in the Championship rather respectably, as they have secured one win in three games, and were perhaps unfortunate not to take something from Watford last weekend. The Rams have been busy this summer as manager Paul Warne hopes to have a squad that is good enough to remain in the second tier.

As stated, Derby and Warne have been very busy this summer, with the club bringing in 10 new players over the past few months. The club’s biggest arrival has been in the form of goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom, who joined the club from Swedish side Djurgarden.

It appears as though Derby are not stopping there however, as they still have their eye on a few players before the close of the window. It was reported earlier this month that the Rams were interested in signing Bournemouth striker Daniel Jebbison on loan.

Jebbison has only just joined the Cherries, but it appears that their plan is to send the striker out for more experience. However, the Rams do face stiff competition, with the likes of Norwich City, West Bromwich Albion, Stoke City and many others also keen on signing the forward on loan.

Another player Derby have had their eye on in this transfer window is Leicester City goalkeeper Daniel Iversen. Warne has worked with the goalkeeper before during his time at Rotherham United, and despite them signing Zetterstrom, Derby were said to be still keen on signing Iversen.

However, this was reported back in July, and as of yet, there has been no suggestion that a deal could occur before tomorrow’s deadline. There is now a new name on Derby’s radar though, and he is a player who has a history against the club.

Derby eyeing deadline move for “real handful” striker

According to journalist Darren Witcoop, relayed by Derby County News, Derby are interested in signing Bolton Wanderers striker Victor Adeboyejo.

The 26-year-old has been with the Trotters since January 2023, after he joined the club from Burton Albion. Since joining the Lancashire side, Adeboyejo has scored 14 goals in 68 games in all competitions, with him netting once in three League One games this season.

The striker has a decent record when it comes to playing Derby – he has faced them five times in his career, winning three, drawing two and netting three goals against the Rams.

Witcoop says that Derby are definitely interested, and there is a “good chance” that the player leaves the League One side in what remains of this window. The journalist goes on to add that he thinks the striker is a “real handful” and would be a good addition for any Championship team.

Witcoop told talkSPORT 2: “There’s been interest this summer [in Adeboyejo]. I know that Plymouth were certainly interested in him. I know Oxford are big fans, Derby like him as well.

“I think there’s a good chance he’ll go this summer and he’s proven in League One that he can score goals and I think whether he can step up, we will soon see but he’s a real handful and I think it would be a good acquisition for a lot of teams in the Championship.”

After three matches without a wicket, Miguel Cummins, on the last day of his stint with Kent, finally looked like the bowler they thought they were getting when they signed him, and a spell of serious menace saw him get Rob Keogh caught behind for 12.Jordan Cox then took a sharp catch at first slip off Gilchrist to remove Gareth Berg for 21, leaving Northants on 70 for 4 at lunch.Related

The afternoon session was fascinatingly balanced: every time Northants seemed to be heading for safety, Kent took a wicket. Gilchrist struck again in his first over, getting Saif Zaib caught behind for six, but Cummings was denied a second wicket when Luke Procter, batting despite an injury, edged him to third slip, where he was put down by Marcus O’Riordan. After putting on 50 with Rossington, Procter was brilliantly run out for 17 by Daniel Bell-Drummond, after being sent back by his captain while attempting a single.Cox took another excellent slip catch off Gilchrist to dismiss Tom Taylor for 12 and when Nathan Buck was lbw for 6 to Joe Denly the lead was a gettable 212, with 45 overs remaining. However, the visitors had pushed on to 156 for 8 at tea and the only chance of a tepid evening session came when Simon Kerrigan was dropped at short leg by Tawanda Muyeye off Denly. The captains shook hands on the draw at 4.50pm, Kent taking 14 points and Northamptonshire 13.
