The 50-year-old has been closely linked with potential roles at Chelsea, Liverpool and United in the past as each of the Premier League giants recently underwent a change in the dugout. Frank’s journey with Brentford has been a tale of resilience and steady growth. Since taking over in 2018, he has led the Bees to new summits of excellence and in the process has gained a reputation for often punching above their weight.

Despite being linked to several high-profile jobs, Frank's loyalty to Brentford remains firm. However, receiving admiration from the football community is something Frank candidly appreciates.

"Of course, it’s nice to get praise," said Frank to "It makes you feel good and it feeds the ego – and we all need to feed our egos. It’s good when you turn on the TV and people are saying nice things about you. I’m only human. So I might get a thought in my head if something sounds nice – but it only lasts for 10 seconds because I have to focus on the job I have and the things I can affect.

"If I wanted to leave, I’d be political and tell the world I was happy while behind the scenes I would be working to get away. But that’s not happening. If someone knocks on my door, then I will decide. There have been offers in the past that I've turned down because of what I have here."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

While Frank’s commitment to Brentford remains strong, he has not ruled out a future departure. Reflecting on what lies ahead, he said: "But you never know what’s going to happen in the future. Will there always be enough inspiration, development, whatever, for me here? Maybe there will come a time when I just don’t find it interesting any more.

"We all grow and develop and perhaps I would like another challenge in the future. I’m a transparent and honest guy. I will see what the world brings to me and take it from there."

Currently sitting 11th in the league standings, Brentford have held their own in a competitive Premier League landscape and are now preparing for a derby clash with Fulham on Monday.

Arsenal struck gold on a star who’s worth more than Calafiori & Gyokeres

It looks set to be a busy summer of transfer business for Arsenal as they look to go one step further next season and win their first Premier League title in over two decades.

Mikel Arteta's side have been linked to a plethora of incredible talents in recent weeks, including Sporting CP's star striker, Viktor Gyokeres and, most recently, Bologna's impressive centre-back, Riccardo Calafiori.

However, while these incredible players would seriously improve the North Londoners' squad, they already have an outstanding talent in the side who is worth more than both.

Declan Rice's Arsenal career

The man in question is also Arsenal's most expensive signing ever, Declan Rice.

The former West Ham United captain joined the Gunners for £105m last summer, and to say his first campaign in red and white went well would probably be an understatement.

In all, the "absolutely phenomenal" midfielder, as dubbed by former Hammers striker Marlon Harewood, made 51 appearances for the North Londoners, and while 30 came as the side's recognised six, he managed to rack up seven goals and ten assists.

That means that the 55-capped Englishman averaged a goal involvement every three games, which is quite remarkable for a player primarily signed for his defensive output.

Moreover, according to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues, the 25-year-old sits in the top 10% of midfielders for progressive passes, the top 14% for assists, the top 15% for pass completion and non-penalty goals and the top 17% for passes attempted, all per 90.

Overall, his importance to Arsenal has become undeniable in just one season, so understandably, his valuation has remained sky-high and higher than that of the stars the club have recently been linked to.

Declan Rice's valuation in 2024

According to reports over the last few weeks, Arsenal could be set to sign Gyokeres for around £76m and Calafiori for slightly less, at around £42m.

Sporting CP strikerViktor Gyokeres.

While these signings would represent significant financial investments in the team, their valuations still pale in comparison to Rice's.

According to Transfermarkt, the 6 foot 2 titan is worth a staggering €120m, which converts to around £102m, or £26m more than the Swedish international and a whopping £60m more than the Italian.

Now, aside from his genuinely impressive performances over the last season, there are probably a few other reasons why his current valuation is so gargantuan.

First, his £240k-per-week contract still has four years left to run, meaning the club is not under any pressure to renew or consider selling him.

joshua-kimmich-declan-rice-liverpool

Second, despite playing so many games for club and country, the Kingston upon Thames-born star has an incredible injury history and has missed just seven games for club and country across his entire senior career.

Lastly, despite being firmly established as a starter for the Gunners and Three Lions, the £105m man is still only 25 years old, and with his aforementioned injury record, there is every chance he could maintain his importance into the 2030s.

Imagine him & Williams: Arsenal a leading contender to sign £100m+ striker

The “world-class” forward would be unreal for the Gunners.

Ultimately, Gyokeres and Calafiori would be brilliant additions to this Arsenal side, but it'll take a genuinely special player to surpass Rice's importance and valuation.

Phil Salt and Rashid Khan help Adelaide Strikers bring down Perth Scorchers

Alex Carey’s side goes top of the table after big 71-run win at home

Peter Della Penna28-Dec-2020A rollicking half-century by opening batsman Phil Salt was followed up by four wickets for 26 runs from the dominant overseas spin duo of Rashid Khan and Danny Briggs to secure a 71-run win for the Adelaide Strikers – a result that moved them to the top of the BBL table – over the Perth Scorchers. Salt’s 28-ball fifty included four fours and as many sixes, and helped set up a challenging165. The Scorchers were wiped out with relative ease, and remained in search of their first win of the season. The Scorchers started aggressively in the chase as Josh Inglis and Jason Roy plundered 35 from the opening three overs. But the overeager approach backfired as they lost 5 for 28 across the next seven overs. Then, with 103 to get off the final ten overs, Peter Siddle induced a false drive from Liam Livingstone to Khan at cover before a series of yorkers from Siddle and Daniel Worrall cleaned up the tail to clinch a lopsided result.Rashid Khan celebrates after taking a wicket•Getty ImagesSalt peppers the boundaryComing into the match, Salt had 67 runs in four innings for the Strikers. He nearly doubled that in this knock. The majority of his scoring was delivered between long-on and midwicket. Salt played a series of sumptuous straight drives to and over the rope in orthodox fashion when the ball was pitched up but didn’t hesitate to free the arms for a slew of heaves over the leg-side rope when length was presented.Salt’s relative ease in scoring at nearly two runs a ball was in stark contrast to his opening partner Jake Weatherald, whose strike rate was under 80 during a 57-run partnership before he fell for 18 in the eighth over. Salt brought up his 50 with a single down the ground in the tenth before skying a catch just after the mid-innings break to give Jhye Richardson the first of his three wickets.Phil Salt slammed four fours and four sixes in his 31-ball knock•Icon Sportswire via Getty ImagesKhan passes fitness test, and how!In the Strikers’ last match on December 23 against the Brisbane Heat, Khan had left the field early after suffering a hamstring strain chasing to prevent a boundary. With five days to recover, he passed a pre-match fitness test and hardly showed any ill effects, giving a huge lift initially with the bat at a crucial point in the Strikers innings.Arriving at 110 for 5 with 25 balls left, Khan drove Fawad Ahmed over long-off for six. He then pulled out the helicopter shot to flick Andrew Tye straight down the ground for back-to-back sixes in the 19th before falling at mid-off next ball attempting to make it a helicopter hat-trick. However, his 29 off 13 made him the second-highest scorer in the innings after the middle order failed to fire following Salt’s fifty.Khan justified his lofty reputation by denting the Scorchers chase with the wicket of Colin Munro just after the powerplay, getting him to edge a googly behind at 40 for 2. He later claimed Aaron Hardie with a gloved pull down the leg side to finish with 2 for 18 in his three overs before rounding off his day latching on to a blistering drive from Livingstone at cover. No weak links in Strikers’ attackAll five bowlers in the Strikers unit claimed two wickets apiece, making it hard for the Scorchers to employ any tactic to see off Khan. The Scorchers were looking solid after three overs, scoring at better than 11 an over, but Inglis delivered a self-inflicted wound to start the fourth over when he walked too far across his stumps trying to scoop Wes Agar over fine leg and was bowled for 16.Munro fell to Khan in the next over before Roy, who had been scoring at better than two runs a ball, played an impetuous heave to long-on in the sixth off Worrell. Mitchell Marsh hammered a slog sweep in the ninth off Briggs but managed to pick out Jonathan Wells at deep square-leg before captain Ashton Turner was pinned on the crease for Agar’s second to leave the Scorchers halfway gone at the halfway point. After Khan and Briggs struck quickly again to claim a second each, Livingstone lashed out in desperation. But Siddle and Worrall were ruthless with their yorkers to clean up the tail, ending the match in the 16th over.

Romano: Everton hold talks with 20 y/o who is keen on Goodison Park move

Whilst their activity in previous transfer windows was severely hampered by financial sanctions, Everton appear eager to put that behind them and use this summer to significantly improve Sean Dyche's side.

Everton eager to get business done quickly

Despite the window still being in its early stages, Everton have already managed to get a number of deals over the line. The Toffees' first incoming of the summer saw Tim Iroegbunam join the club from Aston Villa in a deal reported to be worth £9million.

Dyche must cash in on Everton star who earns even more than Pickford

Iroegbunam was followed through the door at Goodison by former Sheffield United star Iliman Ndiaye who joined in a €20million (£16.9million) move from Marseille. The Senegal international signed a five-year deal with the Toffees and will no doubt play a vital part in Dyche's side next season.

Whilst Everton have already paid out for new signings, with Jack Harrison also returning on loan, the Toffees look set to receive a significant windfall from the imminent departure of Amadou Onana. The Belgian midfielder looks close to completing a £50million move to fellow Premier League side Aston Villa. Whilst Onana will be sorely missed at Goodison, his departure will give the club much-needed funds to bring in more players.

With Everton showing no signs of slowing down in the transfer market this summer, the club are now in talks to sign one of their long-term targets.

Toffees have genuine interest in Championship talent

According to the X account of transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Everton are eager to pursue a deal for Leeds United's Wilfried Gnonto this summer. Romano has reported that talks have recently taken place between Gnonto's camp and the Merseyside outfit with negotiations now well underway.

The post then goes on to claim that the Italian winger is keen on a move to Goodison Park, perhaps owing to Leeds' failure to secure promotion from the Championship last season.

The Toffees have been eager to sign Gnonto for some time with the 20-year-old linked with a move to Merseyside as far back as last summer. With Daniel Farke's side possibly under pressure to sell some of their biggest talents to make more additions of their own, Everton could finally land the Italy international before the window slams shut next month.

Whilst last season saw Gnonto play his football in the Championship, the winger is no stranger to Premier League football with the Italian impressing during Leeds' most recent spell in the topflight.

Speaking back in January 2023, Sky Sports pundit and former Man United defender Gary Neville sang Gnonto's praises, saying of the player:

"To see someone so mature, so young is very unusual in that position. Sometimes you see potential and talent but watching him so closely, his understanding of where to be, his choice of pass, when to run with it, his awareness of teammates, really good honestly."

With Gnonto's departure from Elland Road looking more likely this summer, now could be the time for the Toffees to finally swoop in and bring the player to Goodison Park.

'Bring Frank Lampard home' – Chelsea legend backed for 'ideal' Premier League job despite links with Roma

Lampard tipped for Premier League returnLinked with a move to RomaLast managed Chelsea in 2023Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱Getty Images SportWHAT HAPPENED?

Former Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling, who now works as talkSPORT Breakfast host, has backed Lampard to return to coaching in the Premier League and take charge of West Ham if they part ways with current head coach Julen Lopetegui. The Spaniard replaced David Moyes at the London Stadium in the summer, however, he is now under tremendous pressure after a miserable start in the 2024-25 campaign.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Lopetegui is said to still have the backing of the club management despite winning just three of his first 10 Premier League matches, however, things could change if the Hammers fail to beat Everton this weekend. Under such circumstances, Stelling suggests that the club should go after Lampard, who has not managed a team since his short stint at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea's interim coach in 2023.

WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

While responding to a fan query on talkSPORT's Breakfast show, Stelling said: "I’m going to mention someone who might divide opinions. Is it time, if Lopetegui goes, for West Ham to bring Frank Lampard home? Just a thought. He is available. He’s been mentioned in connection with the Roma job, but West Ham would be ideal for him. I know there’s a man in situ at the moment, but it is just a speculative suggestion at the moment."

The 46-year-old has also emerged as a shock candidate to take over at AS Roma as the Serie A club are reportedly looking to part ways with Ivan Juric. It remains to be seen if Lampard would be open to a new challenge outside of English football or whether a return to West Ham, where his illustrious playing career began, would hold greater appeal.

Salah has once again been leaving cryptic messages for Liverpool fans as he reflects on his time at the club. The Egyptian winger has just over six months left on his current deal at Anfield with there currently being no signs that a new contract has been agreed between the two parties. Once again asked about his future, the 32-year-old admitted that Roberto Firmino leaving for Al-Ahli was a reminder to him that everything in football has its end.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWHAT SALAH SAID

Speaking on the club's YouTube channel, Salah said: "The thing I appreciate the most is the time when I go every morning and I see the guys and share unbelievable moments, especially us three plus Virgil [van Dijk] and Trent [Alexander-Arnold], the senior group.

"When Bobby [Firmino] left, for example, you realise everybody will leave one day so I don't take that for granted. When I go [to the training ground], I always try to have a laugh with them and spend good time together. In my head, I always remember the good things we had together."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

It is easy to speculate as an outsider but the reality is that no-one other than Salah and Liverpool knows what is going on behind closed doors. In the face of the media, the in-form winger is trying to brush off questions about his future and insists that his focus is on winning everything during Arne Slot's first season in charge.

He added: "Win it all. In my opinion, I work so hard every day, I hate the idea that we are underdogs. No, we have an incredible group… In each position, you're gonna find players that are really one of the top three in the world. So, why we don't win it? This city and this club has to always fight for everything."

Should we enter 2025 and Salah has still not penned an extension on Merseyside, he would be free to negotiate with other clubs about a potential transfer next summer. But with the Reds top of the league and cruising under Slot, it is hard to imagine the ex-Chelsea man not being keen to stay at Anfield, unless there are financial motivations on his mind keeping him from rejecting a move to Saudi Arabia.

Ireland A support staff tests positive for Covid-19, prompts two-hour delay

However, test results of the suspected person and close contacts returned negative on Tuesday morning

Mohammad Isam09-Mar-2021The third unofficial ODI between Bangladesh Emerging Team and Ireland A was pushed back by two hours, from a 9 AM start to 11 AM, after a local support staff attached to the visitors had tested positive for Covid-19. Floodlights will be used to account for the two-hour delay in the 50-over game.According to the BCB, the support stuff had tested positive on Monday, after which further tests were conducted on the suspected person and close contacts. However, the test results of all those individuals returned negative on Tuesday morning. Both teams had agreed to delay the match based on the results of those tests. This was the second such case in this series, after Ruhan Pretorius had tested positive during the first match, held on Friday, compelling Ireland A to abandon the game in the first innings. The two teams had then agreed to play the second match, on Sunday, only after all the players, including Pretorius – who was seen sitting outside wearing a PPE suit – tested negative. Before this series, the BCB had held two domestic tournaments and also hosted the West Indies men’s team successfully without any positive cases, in the last six months.

Offer expected: Spurs target £50m "machine" who’d be unreal with Maddison

In the Premier League, every season is important, but for Tottenham Hotspur, that feels especially true for 2024/25.

The Lilywhites enjoyed a relatively successful campaign under Ange Postecoglou last year, which ended in Europa League qualification, but this year, the objective has to be Champions League football.

The Australian won't get the same pass he did last year if there is another end-of-season collapse, although with the right signings, that can hopefully be avoided.

Fortunately, Daniel Levy and Co are hard at work as, based on recent reports, the latest player touted for a move to N17 would be perfect for Postecoglou and be unreal alongside James Maddison.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Sky Sports, Tottenham have maintained their interest in Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher celebrates.

The report claims that the Lilywhites are expected to make an offer for the Englishman soon, although the Blues are in talks with Atlético Madrid about a possible move to the La Liga giants.

The good news for the North Londoners is that a separate report from talkSPORT has claimed the West Londoners are looking for a fee north of £50m, while the Spanish side are not looking to spend more than £40m, leaving room for Levy and Co to get ahead of them.

tottenham-conor-gallagher-dream-xi-jan-opinion

If Spurs are to sign Gallagher in the coming weeks, it won't be a cheap deal, but given his form last season and the potential partnership he could form with Maddison, it would be worth it.

Why Gallagher would be a great teammate for Maddison

Now, there are two main reasons why Gallagher would be such a great teammate for Maddison, and they are also some of the reasons he'd be great for Postecoglou.

The first is that in midfield, his boundless energy and ability to play a more defensive, if not disruptive, style of football would allow the former Foxes star to focus his attention on what's happening at the sharp end of the pitch.

For example, according to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues, the Englishman sits in the top 1% of attacking midfielders – where he made 21 starts last year – or wingers for interceptions, the top 4% for tackles, the top 8% for clearances and the top 11% for blocks, all per 90.

However, while the Epsom-born "machine," as teammate Moises Caicedo dubbed him, is a fantastically hard worker in midfield, he can also help with attacking phases of play, sometimes taking some of the attention of the Coventry-born ace.

For example, in 50 appearances last season, the 24-year-old scored seven goals and provided nine assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 3.12 games, and while that's not earth-shatteringly good, it's a rate of return that would be tremendously helpful to have in the side.

Ultimately, while the fee is high, and he might not be the most glamorous of names, Gallagher would be a great signing for Spurs, and thanks to his relentless running and underrated attacking ability, he'd be unreal alongside Maddison.

Ashley Giles defends Covid protocols after outbreak causes squad swap

England director says relaxed measures, in line with rest of UK, were appropriate

George Dobell06-Jul-2021Ashley Giles insists there has been no breach of Covid protocols from the England squad despite an outbreak of positive cases.England were forced to pick an entirely new squad of players and support staff for the ODI series against Pakistan after seven members of the party originally selected (four from the management unit and three players) tested positive for the virus. But while Giles, the managing director of England’s men’s teams, admits rules may be tightened in light of the episode, he defended both the ECB’s protocols and the squad’s behaviour in adhering to them.Instead, he suggested the ECB were in “an almost impossible situation” as they attempted to retain some measure of protection on the squad while society opens up all around them despite escalating numbers of positive cases.”I’m very confident the players haven’t breached any of those protocols,” Giles said. “We can’t say where it [the virus] originated, but we can identify how some of this has developed through close contact.”We haven’t gambled. I don’t believe we’ve gambled at all. We are fully aware of the risks and we are aware of the knife edge that we are working on all the time. We are trying to look after our people and keeping them sane while protecting the revenues of the whole game. It is a difficult balance to strike.”Let’s stop talking about relaxed protocols. If we haven’t got sole use of hotels, if we have grounds with crowds and you have staff coming in and out of the environment then, however much testing you do, there is going to be risk. We are seeing an almost-impossible situation as society opens and the virus is still spreading.”Related

David Payne 'can't stop smiling' after left-field England call-up

It is understood that everyone involved in the squad had received at least a first vaccine, with Giles promising to “get everyone double-vaccinated as soon as we can.”At the start of the summer, the England management had hoped they would be able to relax the rules around the squad. With the Delta variant creating a new spike in cases, however, most of those plans were shelved. So while the teams no longer have entire hotels to themselves – as was the case in the summer of 2020 – they are still not permitted to eat in restaurants or visit bars for anything more than takeaway coffee. The ECB are mindful of the mental strain of asking players to live in bio-bubbles for concerted periods of time, however, and have made efforts to ensure players could see more of their families. So while players involved in the Sri Lanka series were not allowed home ahead of the Pakistan series, their families were permitted to visit them.”We always hoped we would open up as society opened up,” Giles said. “That was always the plan until the variant arrived. But actually what we had planned – in terms of much more access to families, eating outside, the normal freedoms other people are taking for granted right now – just didn’t happen.”But if relaxing is allowing those guys to eat together or spend some time together – and they spend a lot of time in the dressing room together where that infection can happen – it’s almost impossible to completely remove all risk from the environment.”This year’s protocols have been very close to last year’s protocols. Guys were able to go and play golf, as they were last year under the right risk assessments. There was a period at the start of the trip when, after a risk assessment, guys were able go and exercise outdoors and grab a takeaway coffee. But that was it.”That was two-and-a-half weeks ago when the country was in a different place. Since that point, the squad have been living under very tight restrictions, so this is a frustration for everyone.Ashley Giles keeps an eye on proceedings•PA Photos/Getty Images”We are certainly juggling with the amount of time our players have spent in these environments. We have extremely busy schedules and we’ve been doing this now for 14 or 15 months. To expect them to stay away from each other [at games], go back to the hotel, put their masks on and go straight back to their rooms and eat on their own… it’s almost impossible for that period of time without losing people.”But yes, last year we lived in bio-secure environments and this year we tried to operate in what we called ‘safe environments’. Hotels weren’t sole use. We were sharing certain spaces within the hotel but not key areas like eating areas. And given this variant, which is clearly more infectious, the risk of us catching infection in the group was obviously going to go up.”Despite the team management’s desire to minimise the sense of isolation players may feel while they are in the bubble, Giles warned that protocols are likely to be tightened in the immediate future. Not only would there appear to be a growing risk from the Delta variant, but doubts over the viability of the series will increase if there is another large-scale outbreak. At this stage, these is no indication that Pakistan – or, indeed, India – are expressing reservations about upcoming matches, but the ECB will feel the need to rebuild the sense of security they achieved last year. There is, at this stage, no guarantee that the new squad will prove entirely free of the virus, either.”During this period – these next six games – I think we are going to have to tighten up the environment,” Giles said. “I think it’s unlikely that we’ll have [family] visits into the hotels. Previously those visits were very carefully risk-assessed and arduous, actually.”But we’re still going to be in shared spaces in hotels so there’s still risk. So I think we need to be all over our protocols. And while I don’t think we’ve been slack, I think we just need to reinforce that, with a new group of people, some of them have never been in these environments.”It’s an unprecedented situation in terms of what we have been able to do from making the decision that that squad was not viable to having a new group of players and management team. We are dealing with difficult circumstances and there is still a bit of unknown. We probably won’t sleep easy until we have got through those PCR tests and arrive in Cardiff.”

The United boss played down the significance of the pop megastar turning up in the middle of his conversation with Sky Sports after his opening game in charge against Ipswich Town. Sheeran later apologised for saying hello to Jamie Redknapp while Amorim was talking to presenter Kelly Cates and Roy Keane.

"In England you over complicate things. In Portugal it is so different," Amorim told a press conference. "He was just saying hello to one of the commentators and it was nothing. I was with Roy Keane and he is one of the stars. It was nothing, it's OK."

Amorim is known for his honest approach with the media and his straight talking but he is in a whole new world when it comes to scrutiny now he is manager of United. He hinted he was frustrated with the way his words had been interpreted after the Ipswich game, when he had appeared to criticise Jonny Evans for not pressing goalscorer Omari Hutchinson. He said: "I have to use the names of the players to explain the situation to you guys. I have explained why we had some problems in the first half. It was not a problem with the players; it was about me [and my ideas]. I believe we can play in different systems. Sometimes we defended in a 4-4-2 [vs Ipswich]. We have to play in different systems because nowadays teams change their dynamic. I think our structure, the power of this structure, is to change formation in each game."
