Chelsea: Blues make contact to sign Yunus Musah

Chelsea have made a pre-January move for USA international Yunus Musah in the form of contact with his representatives, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Potter set for backing…

American business tycoon Todd Boehly, after his takeover of the Premier League giants, has already backed his new club to the hilt and displayed real ambition in the transfer market.

£241 million was spent in the summer window, yet after the sacking of former boss Thomas Tuchel, it appears current manager Graham Potter may now be handed a seismic transfer kitty of his own.

Indeed, reports have even suggested that the Blues are currently in pole position to sign RB Leipzig ace Josko Gvardiol and they’re also in the race for Borussia Dortmund superstar Jude Bellingham.

The Latest: Chelsea make Musah contact…

As per 90min, Potter’s side have now made contact with the entourage of Valencia star Musah after his impressive World Cup campaign for the USA.

There is apparently growing interest in the 20-year-old as Chelsea make a pre-January approach – alongside Liverpool.

Arsenal have also been tracking his development for quite some time but it appears Chelsea are now well and truly in the mix for Musah’s signature.

The Verdict: Exciting talent…

The midfielder’s current deal runs until 2026 and contains a seismic €100 million release clause (£86m), yet it remains to be seen if Boehly will have to pay such a huge amount.

Musah, though, is emerging as a very exciting talent and has been a crucial asset to his national team – especially during their impressive 2022 World Cup run to the Last 16.

ESPN commentator Eugênio Leal has certainly been impressed, calling Musah one of USA’s ‘sensational’ midfield trio in Qatar.

Tottenham: Antonio Conte personally eyeing Wilfried Singo move

Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte has personally set his sights on Torino wing-back Wilfried Singo, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Conte chasing Spurs glory…

A serial winner at each of his previous clubs, the Spurs head coach is looking to make a success of his time in north London, having guided them to a top four Premier League finish last season.

If he is to repeat the feat this campaign, and potentially add silverware, Conte will need the backing of both chairman Daniel Levy and sporting director Fabio Paratici.

The Lilywhites are said to have many different transfer targets heading into January, including the likes of James Maddison, and it appears Conte has personally set his sights on an upgrade at wing-back.

The Latest: Conte eyes Singo move…

Reports out of Italy claim the 53-year-old is a huge fan of Singo as Torino set a bargain price tag for his sale.

Despite possessing a market value of £12 million, Tuttosport (via Sport Witness) claim his club are willing to sanction the defender’s exit for a fee between ‘£8.6-£10m’.

This comes as Singo is ‘really liked’ by Conte and Spurs hold an interest in his signing.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-3/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Make the move?

Conte is reportedly looking for upgrades on both Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal as both players face the Spurs axe next month.

Singo may well be an astute option for a fairly reasonable price with members of the media calling him a ‘really impressive talent’.

However, the same could be said of summer signing Djed Spence who has barely featured under Conte this season.

Tottenham, when considering a formal bid for Torino’s 21-year-old, should certainly take that into account.

Spurs eye Emerson upgrade in Pedro Porro

A new wing-back seems to be high on the agenda for Tottenham Hotspur in January.

Over the weekend, as the World Cup concluded with a dramatic goal-fest of a final between winners Argentina and runners-up France, the north London outfit were linked with a move for Pedro Porro of Sporting CP.

According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo (via Sport Witness), Spurs have contacted Premier League rivals Manchester City in a bid to gather further details on their former player and it’s thought that the 23-year-old is one of many players that sporting director Fabio Paratici is eyeing ahead of the new year.

There is also a belief that the Lilywhites have scouted the one-time Spain international on numerous occasions and the club will have to pay his €45m (£40m) release clause.

He’s a dream compared to Emerson

And do that they must as the diminutive 5 foot 8 dynamo would represent a serious attacking upgrade to Antonio Conte’s current first-choice Emerson Royal.

The inconsistent and calamitous Brazilian just isn’t the worst player in the world but he certainly isn’t a good fit for the Italian’s wing-reliant system at Hotspur Way.

Once dubbed a “complete liability” by former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara, Emerson’s attacking contributions are a mere speck of dust on what Porro has achieved over the last year or so.

This domestic season alone, for instance, Porro has managed four assists compared to Emerson’s one, despite playing fewer minutes and this attacking threat is shown across other facets, via FBref’s comparison model.

The Sporting sensation also outperforms Spurs’ right wing-back for key passes, shot-creating actions and successful crosses, thus proving to be a far greater creative threat, not to mention his ability to get in and around the opposition’s box, managing nearly four times as many shots per 90, too.

Considering a lot of Tottenham’s threat and attacking impetus comes from the wings, Porro would undoubtedly be a considerable upgrade on the former FC Barcelona man, given the statistics above.

Unlike Emerson, the Spanish whiz has been lauded as a “special talent” by journalist Zach Lowry and “different class” by another ex-Spurs star, Jermaine Jenas.

As such, Paratici must look to pay out his release clause in a bid to hand Conte his dream wing-back option in Porro this January transfer window.

AND in other news, Spurs could seal Conte’s perfect Maddison alternative in Jan swoop for £30.5m “beast”…

Manchester United: Erik ten Hag keen on Martin Zubimendi

Manchester United are thought to be interested in signing Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi alongside Premier League rivals Chelsea.

The Lowdown: Zubimendi profiled

Zubimendi, a Spain international, is primarily a defensive midfielder who can also play in a box-to-box role, and is valued at a career-high €40m by Transfermarkt.

The 23-year-old has made 115 appearances for his current employers and has been described as ‘special’ by Sid Lowe, drawing comparisons to Xabi Alonso.

His contract contains a €60m release clause, and it looks as if Erik ten Hag is keen on bolstering his midfield ranks further with a move for Zubimendi.

The Latest: Transfer update

Sports Witness relayed an update from Mundo Deportivo, who mentioned Simon Phillips’ update on Chelsea registering an interest in Zubimendi.

They claimed that Ten Hag ‘likes him a lot’ and would be more than happy to add him to his squad, however, Sociedad are confident of keeping the midfielder next month.

The Verdict: Summer move?

The Red Devils may be better off looking to add to their attacking ranks in the New Year after Cristiano Ronaldo left Old Trafford last month.

A move for Cody Gakpo failed to materialise with the Dutchman joining rivals Liverpool instead, with Ten Hag having just one out-and-out centre-forward in Anthony Martial.

Therefore, a new forward over the coming weeks could be more beneficial than signing Zubimendi, with a potential transfer then revisited in the summer.

Wan-Bissaka could stay at Man United

Aaron Wan-Bissaka could still stay at Manchester United despite being linked with a move away, TalkSPORT reporter Alex Crook has suggested.

What’s the word?

The defender had hardly played until the World Cup, but has slotted into the Man United side well in recent games.

Wan-Bissaka looked certain to leave in January, but with a number of Premier League clubs thought to be interested in a deal for the right-back, Crook feels his improved form could give him a lifeline under Erik ten Hag.

Speaking on the TalkSPORT Gameday Podcast, Crook claimed that with no replacement on the horizon, United could save a bit of money by continuing to use Wan-Bissaka more and keeping him at the club.

“It’ll be interesting to see what Manchester United do with Aaron Wan-Bissaka. He’s a player that Wolves, West Ham and Crystal Palace are all keen on in this window,” he stated.

“Actually, he’s playing quite well for Manchester United, and with no sign of a replacement coming in, I wonder again, if he may just have prolonged his Old Trafford career until the end of the season with his recent performances.”

A short-term solution

This could come as a bit of a surprise considering the fact that Ten Hag is supposedly open to getting rid of the defender.

Although Wan-Bissaka could provide adequate cover for Diogo Dalot until the end of the season, United should use the summer window to find a suitable replacement for the 25-year-old.

Wan-Bissaka will not improve without regular minutes, and when Dalot is fully fit, he is evidently preferred by Ten Hag, and a player more similar to Dalot should be targeted.

In the short term, keeping him allows United more time to find a replacement, but in the long run, unless he establishes himself as first-choice before the end of the season, the club should move on from the former Crystal Palace defender.

Southampton are now tracking Rory MacLeod

Southampton are tracking Dundee United forward Rory MacLeod and are now set to watch him in action up close, according to a new report.

The Lowdown: Future star

In a bid to bolster their development squad, the Saints now appear to be interested in MacLeod, who is just 16 but has already made three appearances in the Scottish Premiership with Dundee United.

Not only that, but the youngster is showing signs of being a good leader, having captained Scotland U17s earlier this season, giving off the right indications that he could be on course to be a future star.

The Latest: Southampton scouting mission

According to a new report from the Daily Record, Southampton are set to watch the starlet play in the coming days, having had him on their radar for some time.

However, it is detailed that only a significant bid  with guaranteed add-ons would tempt the Tangerines into letting him go, and the Saints may face competition from Newcastle United for his signature.

The Verdict: Talented prospect

While the youngster is clearly being eyed for the future rather than as someone to have an instant impact, he is evidently a talented prospect, who has a very promising future ahead of him if he continues to develop.

Lauded as ‘fearless’ by journalist Alan Temple, the Scot made history for Dundee United by becoming their youngest ever player in February last year, making an appearance for the club at the age of just 16 years and six days old.

Southampton have a well-deserved reputation of being a fantastic club for developing young players, and they could have found another real gem for their development squad in MacLeod, so Nathan Jones should move swiftly to sign him before there is even more interest from Premier League clubs.

Celtic: Hatate was "so enjoyable to watch"

Scottish champions Celtic opened up a 12-point lead at the summit with victory over Kilmarnock at Parkhead on Saturday, with Ange Postecoglou’s side getting back to winning ways following the recent derby stalemate.

That Old Firm thriller had seen the Hoops snatch a point late on despite having not been at their free-flowing best, although it proved a far more comfortable outing this time around for the league leaders, having seen off Derek McInnes’ side with relative ease.

Despite a rather commanding display, it had taken until just before half-time for the hosts to finally make the breakthrough, with Portuguese star Jota netting for the first time in the league since October following Daizen Maeda’s clever pullback.

That lead was then extended just after the break as Killie’s Ash Taylor turned into his own net under pressure from the ever-lively Kyogo Furuhashi, following a fine, driven cross from Reo Hatate.

The latter man had proven particularly influential in that eventual 2-0 triumph, with the Japanese international once again rubber-stamping his importance to the side at the heart of the midfield three.

Despite proving his worth as a makeshift right-back option in recent weeks prior to the clash with the Gers – having produced a “masterclass” in that role against Hibernian in the words of journalist John McGinley – the diminutive ace showcased yesterday just why he is so vital in Postecoglou’s midfield machine.

The 25-year-old was simply “so enjoyable to watch” on the day, according to McGinley, having showcased his creative flair after registering four key passes in total from his 83 touches, with that the most of any player for either side.

The one-cap machine did lose possession on 18 occasions although that was merely a marker of his desire to make things happen in the final third, having also offered a real bonus defensively after winning three of his six ground duels and winning two fouls for his side.

That standout performance – which earned the 5 foot 8 ace a 7.6 match rating, as per Sofascore – was notably lauded by Glasgow Live’s Matthew Fulton, who awarded the relentless gem a 9/10 match rating, while also praising what had been an ‘all-round, effortless showing’.

Such a remarkable display has only further showcased just what a coup it was to be able to bring Hatate to Celtic Park just over a year ago.

Wolves: Guedes the real villain vs Forest

Wolverhampton Wanderers saw their hopes of Carabao Cup glory dashed in cruel fashion on Wednesday evening, with Julen Lopetegui’s side having crashed out at the hands of Nottingham Forest following tense penalty shootout drama at the City Ground.

The visitors had got off to the worst possible start on the night as the returning figure of Willy Boly almost inevitably got on the scoresheet, with the former Molineux titan netting inside 18 minutes after being teed up by another familiar face in the form of Morgan Gibbs-White.

The Old Gold did eventually pull level just after the hour mark through Mexican marksman, Raul Jimenez, with that strike ultimately ensuring that the tie – and a place in the last four of the competition – would be decided on penalties.

With both sides having missed their opening spot-kicks courtesy of Sam Surridge and the typically reliable Ruben Neves, a string of successful attempts left the responsibility on young Joe Hodge to take the shootout into sudden death, albeit with the playmaker seeing his effort saved by opposition stopper, Dean Henderson.

Although the 20-year-old’s miss may well have ultimately been the game’s deciding moment, the Republic of Ireland youth international had shown great courage to step up to the plate in the first place, with little blame likely to be directed his way.

One man who was something of a villain for the away side, however, was summer signing Goncalo Guedes, with the Portuguese international having failed to build on his weekend strike at Anfield after producing a limp display against Steve Cooper’s men.

That simple finish in the 2-2 draw with Liverpool had been just the 26-year-old’s second goal since his £27.5m arrival from Valencia, with the forward having yet to truly make his mark in English football to date.

Those woes were laid bare last night as the 32-cap dud was hooked at half-time after making only 32 touches in total in his wide berth, while also recording a pass accuracy rate of just 64%.

That dismal outing was encapsulated by the fact that the one-time Paris Saint-Germain man also lost the ball on 13 occasions, ensuring that he squandered possession once every 2.6 touches.

The struggling asset also failed to win a single duel and was unable to register a solitary key pass to further illustrate his lack of impact, with it having been no surprise to see him replaced in favour of the aforementioned Neves.

As Birmingham Live’s Alex Dicken stated, Wolves supporters are still ‘waiting for the real Goncalo Guedes to arrive in Wolverhampton’, with the misfiring attacker having been ‘ineffective’ once again.

Although Guedes did make his mark on Merseyside just a few days ago, that already appears a mere distant memory following what was another underwhelming showing against Forest.

How does Klopp rate in the List of Anfield Managerial Greats?

On the one hand, judging who is the best of quite frankly, a stellar bunch of candidates to be the best Liverpool manager should be an easy process. You simply look at trophies lifted, games won, goals scored. The length of time also comes into play. But there are a lot of other factors that serve to muddy the water. The place the club were in when that person took over, not just in terms of league position, but the players at his disposal, the moral of the club is a big factor. The state of the competition at that time should not be ignored either. Finally the state of the club after he left should be taken into consideration. All of those factors need to be considered if you are to come up with the best manager of all time. So how does Klopp rate?

The Statistics: In terms of silverware, Bob Paisley is head and shoulders ahead of anyone else, with 19 from his nine seasons at the helm. Bill Shankly and Kenny Dalglish (over his two spells) come in joint second with ten trophies each. Klopp’s haul currently stands at third place, though currently he’s having a tough season, the team is usually on comparison platforms such as oddschecker on the odds to win the Premier League.

When it comes to winning percentage, the German comes out top, with a 61.33 winning percentage from his 256 games in charge. Dalglish is the only other person to get over sixty percent, with 60.93% for his first spell, registering just 47.3% in his second. Paisley’s 57.57% is particularly impressive, achieved as it was over such a sustained period. Shankly incidentally achieved 52.11%.

The points per game (adjusted for when it was just two points for a win) again shows it is Dalglish and Klopp occupying the top two spots. Kenny’s first spell garnered an average of 2.08 points a game to Klopp’s 2.04. The next is Paisley on 1.97.

The way that Liverpool have played in these last two seasons in particular has been something that has been behind a lot of the praise for Klopp’s regime. That is borne out in the goals per game stats. Jurgen’s reign has seen the highest figure of any manager, coming in at 2.06. Dalglish’s first spell is the only other one to get higher than two (2.01).

One stat that may be surprising is the average goal difference per game, as the defence under Klopp has been held up as a corner stone of the team’s success. It is at 1.05, still better than any other manager apart from Dalglish, again in his first spell, when he registered a very impressive 1.17.

The thing with all of those statistics however is that they should not be viewed alone. For every one of those sets of data, the years preceding Klopp’s tenure at the club showed some of the worst, if not the worse figures in the club’s history. Those preceding Dalglish, were healthy looking, he was able to build on the success that Paisley and Shankly (and Fagan) had built. Klopp has not just started to achieve success, but he has had to almost from scratch, built a squad capable of achieving that success.

Not A Case of Buying Success

Know we’ve digested the hard stats, it will be good to look at some softer, less black and white factors. The season before Jurgen arrived at Anfield (2014/2015), the Reds finished 6th. They had lost Suarez the previous summer, and that season was Gerrard’s last, likewise for Raheem Sterling. It was a side filled with decent EPL players, but with very few stars, players you could point at and say were genuine not just match winners, but title winners.

Critics point to the amount of money Klopp has spent (£424,000,000 since his arrival in October 2015, on 23 players). That is considerably lower than the likes of the two Manchester clubs, and you have to look at the comparative base those three clubs were coming from in terms of squad value at that time. And that word value is key to this.

Because of the millions of pounds spent at EPL clubs, it is easy to forget that value is something held so close to the heart of clubs and their boards. It is easy to look at Klopp’s big money buys, but perhaps his biggest success stories have been in the way he has got the most out of not just those, but all members of his squad. Divock Origi for example played a crucial part in the Champions League success a couple of seasons ago. The way he has been able to get Oxlade Chamberlain back looking like the player he looked like he was going to be in his early Arsenal days is also a testament to Klopp’s coaching and man management skills.

Those are the factors that will get lost over time – in much the same way that players’ and managers’ stock improves year after they have actually been active in the game. They are a vital piece of the jigsaw though and certainly should not be ignored when evaluating Klopp’s performance. There is one huge aspect missing, and parallels can be drawn with Arsène Wenger. No matter how good your record, the state you leave the club in does go a hell of a long way to how you are viewed, especially in the short to mid-term. Wenger was undoubtedly one of Arsenal’s greatest managers, but the club he left in a poor state, with the fans divided and a squad not fit for purpose.

For Klopp to be considered the best in Liverpool’s illustrious history, he still has some way to go, and it will not be achieved merely courtesy of winning percentages. He needs to get the club expecting to, and actually winning trophies year on year, and when he does decide hang up his manager’s coat, he needs to leave the club in a position where his successor can continue in the same, or similar vein. This is about the club, not one man. At the moment, the signs are very good, that both Klopp and Liverpool are on their way to achieving that.

Man Utd: Kevin Mbabu is Wan-Bissaka repeat

Manchester United have enjoyed a relatively quiet January window thus far, with their sensational work on the pitch providing enough to keep fans subdued.

Erik ten Hag has masterminded a sensational turnaround from their faltering start to the campaign, leading them on a run of nine straight wins in all competitions that stretched back to before the World Cup. That was, at least, before Crystal Palace’s late equaliser on Wednesday night halted that.

It seems that with the schedule expected to build up as the various European competitions restart, the Dutch manager is looking for added cut-price depth in a number of positions.

As of earlier this week, that could come in the form of a new right back.

Noted by the Italian media, Fulham’s Kevin Mbabu is of particular interest to the Red Devils, who are in advanced negotiations for the Swiss defender.

The £40k-per-week stalwart only made the switch to Craven Cottage this summer, but could be set to make a monumental step up should these rumours be true.

Fans of the Reds will be hoping they are not, especially given the recent performances of Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

It seems that the former Palace star has finally hit his stride at Old Trafford, and seems to get better with each appearance. His average Sofascore rating of 6.95, whilst impressive, arguably does not do justice to how he has turned his career around in Manchester.

It was true that when he first moved his game focused almost solely on defending, and for a modern full-back at the top of the game, this was unacceptable.

It may have taken him four years, but the 25-year-old has now started the last five Premier League games and finally poses a tangible threat outlined in his 0.8 key passes per game and 50% dribble success rate for the season.

Ten Hag even took the time to praise his resurgent performances: “He is doing really well, Aaron, in the last few games. Defending really consistently. He is also reliable in offence. He has a part in it, he contributes well.”

Mbabu offers a similar issue, but they cannot afford him the time they did with the Englishman, especially when his potential is hardly outstanding.

The 27-year-old has struggled to break through into the Cottagers’ first team, having only made six appearances in the league this season.

Despite this, like Wan-Bissaka, he does impress defensively as he ranks in the top 1% for interceptions and the top 3% for blocks when compared to other full-backs across Europe.

This is contrary to journalist Kyle Bonn’s claim that he remains an “awful defender”.

Mbabu is not a terrible player, but when United have invested so much time and money into Wan-Bissaka, it seems foolish to abandon that in favour of a solid if unspectacular quick fix.

He would face similar teething issues as his potential teammate did, which, given their potential title charge, they cannot afford and simply do not need.
