Antoine Griezmann to Man Utd transfer talk proves ‘something wrong’ as Red Devils are warned off ‘short-term’ signing by ex-France international striker

Manchester United have been warned that reports of interest in Antoine Griezmann prove that “there is something wrong” at Old Trafford.

Premier League giants lacking attacking sparkLinked again with World Cup winnerEngland winger still being frozen outWHAT HAPPENED?

The Red Devils have been linked with the World Cup-winning France international for some time, but they have never been able to get a deal over the line. Transfer speculation has resurfaced ahead of the January window in 2024, with the Premier League heavyweights still crying out for attacking inspiration.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT SAHA SAID

Former United striker Louis Saha has told of the surprising rumours regarding his fellow countryman and a potential move to England from Atletico Madrid: “Antoine Griezmann is a talented player and unlike many players, there’s never any doubts about him. He’s very mobile and physically he’ll always find the right area. Manchester United’s interest in him show straight away that there is something wrong.

"They already have Mason Mount, but it means they’re looking at a replacement for him because Griezmann is the type of player that Manchester United need. He’s a clever player who can be in the pocket, create things and score goals. He is a great player who has scored so many goals for Atletico Madrid and it would be really exciting. But I don’t see him as a future signing for Manchester United. No disrespect to Griezmann at all, but I don’t understand why they [the Manchester United board] would be looking at him. He’s a short-term solution but I don’t see the future of Manchester United with Antoine Griezmann in it.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

United have plenty of firepower on their books, but Rasmus Hojlund is still finding his feet in a No.9 berth, Marcus Rashford has only one goal to his name this season and England international Jadon Sancho has been frozen out by Erik ten Hag. Saha added on that unfortunate saga: “The Jadon Sancho situation is horrible for everybody. As a Manchester United fan, you want to see the best players and most talented players on the pitch and Sancho is definitely one of those players that can disrupt the opposition. But, since he signed, he hasn’t performed regularly, and it’s been going on for months now so it's time to find the solution for everybody.

"We want to see him go somewhere he’s playing, scoring and enjoying his football, wherever it is he wants to go. I’m sad because I really like him when he’s in form, but it hasn’t happened for him at United. Even if Erik ten Hag considered bringing him back into the team, I doubt it would work because if he starts playing well, people will say that Ten Hag should have brought him in earlier. But if he doesn’t play well, then people will say that he shouldn’t have brought him back. It’s a very difficult situation to manage and it’s bad for the club because it’s an off-field situation that’s affected things on the pitch.”

The 27-year-old, who netted the winning goal for City in the 2023 Champions League final, found himself in the referee’s notebook once again in Sunday's Premier League meeting with Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium. He was cautioned during the first half of that contest for a foul on Pedro Porro.

Rodri now has five bookings for the season, meaning that he must complete a one-match ban. He will be unavailable to Pep Guardiola for a trip to Aston Villa on Wednesday. Jack Grealish also entered the book in the second half, meaning he too will be absent for the trip to Villa Park. As a result, City will be forced into a tactical switch.

DID YOU KNOW?

Guardiola will need no reminding that his side, for all of their obvious qualities, are not as formidable when Rodri is out of action. He has already served a three-match suspension this season after being shown a straight red card against Nottingham Forest in September.

Man Utd player ratings vs Fulham: No Rasmus Hojlund, no party! Bruno Fernandes falls flat and Marcus Rashford abysmal as Erik ten Hag's top-four hopes hit by damaging defeat

The Red Devils were toothless without their Danish goal machine and deservedly lost to Marco Silva's side, who had not won away for over six months

Manchester United's mini-revival appears to have been built on sand after all, as it took just a couple of injuries for Erik ten Hag's side to sink to their first defeat of 2024 as they were beaten 2-1 at home by a Fulham side who had not won away since the opening day of the season.

Missing the in-form Rasmus Hojlund and the dependable Luke Shaw, United made a flat start and failed to score in the first half for the first time in eight matches. Diogo Dalot struck the post, but Fulham looked more dangerous, with Alex Iwobi missing the target twice and Rodrigo Muniz hitting a post.

Fulham deservedly took the lead early in the second half through a thumping effort from Calvin Bassey, and United had only half-chances to score until Harry Maguire stabbed home from close-range in the 89th minute. With nine minutes added on and Bruno Fernandes whipping up the crowd, Fulham were prepared for an onslaught.

But instead it was the Londoners who had the last laugh, Iwobi making it third time lucky and slotting into the bottom corner after United were too slow to shut down a visiting counter-attack.

Ten Hag's side are now eight points adrift of fourth-placed Aston Villa and could be six behind Tottenham in fifth if Spurs win their game in hand, giving them a mountain to climb if they want to qualify for the Champions League.

GOAL rates United's players from Old Trafford…

Getty ImagesGoalkeeper & Defence

Andre Onana (7/10):

Did well to keep out a header from Lukic and a curler from Pereira. Couldn't do much about Bassey's thunderous drive.

Diogo Dalot (6/10):

Clipped the post from the edge of the area. Crossing wasn't good enough and struggled to get at Robinson.

Raphael Varane (5/10):

Iwobi had the run of him in the first half

Harry Maguire (6/10):

Booked for a late and dangerous challenge on Lukic, but prevented Fulham from creating even more danger. Grabbed the equaliser but was then easily dribbled past on the counter before Iwobi pounced to get the winner.

Victor Lindelof (5/10):

A huge downgrade on Shaw. Offered nothing in attack and too easy for Fulham to get past.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesMidfield

Kobbie Mainoo (5/10):

Made a few good challenges to thwart Fulham but not nearly as assured or influential as in recent weeks.

Casemiro (5/10):

Made a silly error against Lukic which gifted Fulham a counterattack. His day ended prematurely following a clash of heads with the Serbian midfielder.

Bruno Fernandes (5/10):

Another shoddy display in what has become a worrying run of form for the captain. Failed to control a through-ball which would have put him clean through on goal and created very few promising moments, aside from a late flurry which saw him set up the equaliser and force Leno into a low save.

Getty ImagesAttack

Omari Forson (4/10):

A difficult full debut and couldn't do anything of note in attack. He did look tidy though, and could be better suited to a midfield role.

Marcus Rashford (4/10):

Another pitiful display at centre-forward, offering none of the hold-up play of Hojlund or the hard-work. Backed away from a 50-50 ball in the first half which led to a big chance for Fulham.

Alejandro Garnacho (7/10):

The only United outfield player who can be proud of their performance. Tested Leno with a powerful shot and had another goal-bound effort blocked by Robinson.

Getty ImagesSubs & Manager

Scott McTominay (5/10):

Hauled on earlier than usual due to Casemiro's head injury. Barely got a sniff of danger.

Christian Eriksen (6/10):

Made his first appearance since January 14 and at first was slow and sloppy. Got more effective in the final few minutes.

Amad Diallo (N/A):

Replaced Mainoo in the 80th minute.

Antony (N/A):

Came on in the 98th minute.

Erik ten Hag (5/10):

Took a bold move in starting 19-year-old Forson but it did not work. His substitutions helped get the equaliser, but ultimately his team looked weak with just a couple of injuries.

Revealed: How Arsenal star Bukayo Saka responds to Premier League & Champions League rivals trying to ‘smash’ him

Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka has explained how he reacts to Premier League and Champions League rivals that are looking to “smash” him.

Gunners winger is a serious threatAdded end product to his gameOpponents eager to shut him downWHAT HAPPENED?

The 22-year-old England international has become one of the most feared forwards in world football, with his dancing feet allowing him to bamboozle opponents. Saka has also added end product to his game, with a career-high 16 goals recorded across all competitions this season.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWHAT SAKA SAID

Saka’s threat has become that obvious that rivals will look to shut him down by any means possible – even if that means bending the rules a little. The Gunners talisman has told of becoming a target: “When I go on the pitch I’m there to have fun and to enjoy. I would say I learned a lot over the last few seasons, when I started to get more and more tackles and defenders have started to enjoy more and more kicking me, I spoke to a few defenders and now I understand it. So for me, when I see a defender trying to smash me, as long as he doesn’t get me, I’m laughing or I’m smiling because I take it as a compliment.

“I don’t think a defender would be calling for help or a defender would want to smash me if he didn’t see me as a threat. So, for me, if he tries to smash me and I get away with it, I just laugh and just get on with the game, because I guess it’s part of it. I’m not going to say names because I feel like those conversations should stay between me and them, but I’ve had a few conversations with opposition, even sometimes the players here, when I ask, ‘why are you guys like this? Why do you just want to smash players?’ They just explain to me so I understand and once I understand it’s easy for me to to get on with it more. As long as no one tackles me really, really badly [it’s okay] because obviously I don’t want to be injured or I don’t want to be playing through pain, I don’t think anyone wants that.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

While Saka is looking to make a difference in the final third for club and country, he appreciates that it is the duty of a defender to try and snuff him out. He added on the need to keep his cool when being provoked: “Obviously, the defender is only trying to do his job and protect his goal, and I’m only trying to do my job and get towards his goal. So we’re all just trying to do our best for the team. I just try and keep my temper, because I know when I do lose my head, I don’t play well. I hope I haven’t given a secret to the opposition there.”

Arsenal, who trail their Champions League last-16 encounter with Porto 1-0 heading into a return leg at Emirates Stadium on March 12, will be back in Premier League action next Monday when taking in a trip to Sheffield United – with Mikel Arteta’s side still very much in the domestic title hunt.

Rangers: Kemar Roofe posts injury hint

An early Rangers team news hint has emerged ahead of the Glasgow giants’ participation in the UEFA Europa League final…

What’s the latest?

The Daily Record have relayed an Instagram story from the centre-forward that shows two custom shinpads with “Sevilla final 2022” and “Kemar Roofe” in text along with a picture of the striker with his family.

He posted the teaser on Saturday as he continues to fight to be available for the showpiece in Seville on Wednesday night.

Gio van Bronckhorst recently provided an update on his situation, saying: “He’s not training with the team at the moment. For him, he’s doing everything.

“I really admire his desire to be ready for the game on Wednesday. We’re pushing hard, but it’s one of those injuries where it’s a close call.

“Hopefully he can make some positive steps in the coming days.”

Supporters will be excited

Ibrox supporters will be excited by this teaser from the Jamaica international as it hints that Roofe is expecting to be fit for the game.

Although it is merely guesswork at this point, it seems unlikely that the forward would post that picture on his story if he was set to miss out on the squad and watch on from the sidelines. Van Bronckhorst confirmed that he is still in with a chance of making the match and this post suggests that the player is confident that he will be putting those shinpads into action against Frankfurt.

Fans will be delighted by the prospect of him being available as his return would be a huge boost to the team heading into the massive clash in Seville.

Roofe was hitting his stride before this injury disrupted his season as he scored four goals and provided two assists in his last six outings for Rangers in all competitions. One of those strikes ended up being the winner in the quarter-final of the Europa League against Braga – as he tapped home in extra time to make it 3-2 to the Gers on aggregate.

He has shown that he can be a match-winner for the club, in Europe and domestically, and van Bronckhorst will be keen to have his goalscoring talents to call upon on Wednesday.

Therefore, supporters will be excited by the teaser from Roofe and will be hoping that it means that he will be kitting up for a major European final next week.

AND in other news, GvB already heading for huge summer disaster at Rangers, Ross Wilson will be livid…

Tottenham: Report shares big Terrier transfer update

According to a fresh report out of France, a big Tottenham Hotspur transfer update has come to light involving in-form Rennes striker Martin Terrier.

The Lowdown: Striker on the cards?

Lilywhites manager Antonio Conte has reportedly earmarked the signing of a striker as one of six transfer targets for the summer window, according to reports.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Spurs have been linked with the likes of Lautaro Martinez (Inter Milan) and Andrea Belotti (Torino) as club chief Fabio Paratici seemingly turns his head to Italy in search of fresh faces.

However, as per fresh reports from elsewhere, Ligue 1 could also be a fruitful source to back Conte with upgrades in the centre-forward position.

The Latest: Paratici makes offer…

According to Foot Mercato, the north-Londoners, and by extension their transfer director Paratici, have already made a ‘proposal’ to sign Terrier, who is currently enjoying a fine 2021/2022 campaign.

Currently at the ‘top of his game’, Rennes’ star has been nominated for the Ligue 1 Player of the Year award as Spurs now ‘like him a lot’.

The Premier League top-four chasers are apparently ‘very fond’ of Terrier and have been ‘seduced’ by his form with the forward blowing them away this season.

The Verdict: Get it done?

Scoring 21 goals in 36 league appearances, it is little wonder Tottenham are enticed and have made a pre-summer move.

Valued at £14.4 million by Transfermarkt, he could also come as a slightly cheaper option to the likes of Inter star Martinez to provide Harry Kane with some competition.

That being said, it remains to be seen whether Rennes charge more for their pivotal attacker given he is under contract there until 2o25.
