Kitchen fire disrupts ODI build-up

A fire in a kitchen at Edgbaston briefly disrupted preparations for the first one-day international between England and New Zealand

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Jun-2015A fire in a kitchen at Edgbaston briefly disrupted preparations for the first one-day international between England and New Zealand.Fire crews and three ambulances attended the venue, which was evacuated shortly before midday, with people treated for smoke inhalation. One member of staff was sent home as a precaution while others were checked by paramedics and cleared of any problems having briefly breathed in smoke while trying to tackle the fire. The fire, understood to be caused when baking peppers, happened in the Warwickshire Suite on the third floor of the new pavilion. Smoke drifted into the dressing rooms – the England team was evacuated on to the pitch and New Zealand were delayed in their attempts to start training – and the pre-match press conferences were relocated.Warwickshire tweeted: “West Midlands Fire Service have dealt with a small kitchen fire on-site. No impact on tomorrow’s game + thanks to everyone for your patience.”

Players given clean chit, says BCCI

The ICC’s ACSU is understood to have found no corroborating evidence against the three international cricketers who had been accused by former IPL chairman Lalit Modi of having received affluent gifts from an Indian businessman

‘If there’s nothing from ICC, it’s a clean chit’ – Thakur

The ICC’s Anti-corruption and Security Unit is understood to have found no corroborating evidence against the three international cricketers who had been accused by former IPL chairman Lalit Modi of having received affluent gifts, in cash and kind, from an Indian businessman. The ICC has not officially commented on the ACSU’s investigation but it was alluded to by the BCCI on Monday, which said it had not received any information from the ICC and hence believed the players had been given a clean chit.”The follow-up is there is nothing in that,” BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur said at a press conference. “If they had found something, they would have reported it back to us. If there is nothing from the ICC on it, it has to be a clean chit.”Modi, in a letter to ICC chief executive David Richardson in October 2013, had said he had been informed that the three cricketers – Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo – had received houses and cash from a real estate baron, who is an alleged bookie. While confirming Modi’s letter on Sunday, an ICC spokesperson had stated “standard operating procedures” had been followed, including informing the BCCI’s ACSU. The procedure involved the ICC carrying out an investigation and arriving at a conclusion as to whether charges could or could not be laid against the players involved. The home boards of the three players mentioned in the Modi letter would have been informed as to the details of the investigation.”The jurisdiction of the three players was under the ICC because they are international players. And if they have conducted an inquiry, they will be able to say something on the outcome of the ICC inquiry,” Thakur said. All the three players named have been key members of the Chennai Super Kings, the franchise that is owned India Cements, which in turn is owned by the family of former BCCI president N Srinivasan. During the 2013 IPL corruption scandal, Srinivasan’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan was arrested for betting on IPL games. While the team has been under Supreme Court investigation since then, Srinivasan has taken over as the ICC chairman.Asked if the Srinivasan-led BCCI would have swept the matter under the carpet or if the BCCI is throwing the ball back into the ICC’s court, Thakur replied in negative. “We are not passing the buck to ICC. When someone plays international cricket, it’s the ICC ACSU’s responsibility to investigate his deeds. ICC has investigated into the case and ICC is better placed to comment on its outcome. They haven’t informed anything in writing to the BCCI.”

Middlesex almost deliver on Franklin gamble

An entertaining finish to a weather-ravaged match at Merchant Taylors’ School saw Somerset, set 219 to win from 40 overs by Middlesex, make a spirited attempt before accepting the draw at 147 for 7.

ECB/PA14-Jul-2015
ScorecardTim Murtagh had Middlesex dreaming of stealing a win but they ran out of time•Middlesex CCCAn entertaining finish to a weather-ravaged match at Merchant Taylors’ School saw Somerset, set 219 to win from 40 overs by Middlesex, make a spirited attempt before accepting the draw at 147 for 7.Middlesex had earlier declared their second innings at 132 for 6, after just 29 overs’ batting, in an effort to force a result following the loss of almost 144 overs to bad weather during the game.Marcus Trescothick, leading Somerset from the front, played a captain’s innings of 50 from 86 balls, to complete his second half-century of the match and he was supported well by Tom Abell, who made 21, James Hildreth’s 29 and 23 from Jim Allenby as Middlesex were made to sweat more than a little. At 113 for 3, with 15 overs left, Somerset were preparing for a final assault on a tough target – but Middlesex held their nerve. In the end, after Peter Trego had been superbly held at third slip by Sam Robson off seamer Tim Murtagh, who finished with 3 for 43, Middlesex had just three overs in which to take the last three Somerset wickets – and it proved beyond them. Hands were shaken after 39.4 overs had been bowled.Toby Roland-Jones helped Murtagh to spearhead the Middlesex attack in the absence of Steven Finn, who missed the last day after being retained in England’s second Ashes Test squad, and the tall paceman bowled with great heart and stamina to take 2 for 45 from 16 overs. James Harris, Finn’s replacement, chipped in with the wickets of Jamie Overton and Allenby just when it seemed as if Somerset might even make a fist of reaching their tough target.Overton, promoted from No. 11 to have a swing, skied a return catch from an attempted carve to leg to go for 5, and Allenby was brilliantly held by a sprawling Eoin Morgan at deep cover. Somerset had begun the last ten overs needing another 84, with six wickets in hand, but Allenby’s fall signalled the end of their chase. In Middlesex’s second innings it was skipper James Franklin who led the charge with 32 from 25 balls in which he swung Tim Groenewald for two sixes in an over, and John Simpson, with 17 not out, also drove Lewis Gregory over long on for six. The declaration came immediately after Ollie Rayner, in to face one ball after Franklin had heaved to deep-midwicket, slammed a straight four back past bowler Gregory. But batting was a tricky business on a pitch which was under cover all day yesterday when the third day was washed out, and for 25.3 overs on day two because of showers. There was more frustration this morning, too, when just 74 minutes’ play was possible in the first session before light rain frustratingly arrived at 12.14pm to drive the players from the field. An early lunch was taken at 12.45pm but more rain and bad light meant play was unable to resume after lunch until 2.10pm. A further brief bad light stoppage, with Middlesex at 66 for 3, threatened to ruin the prospect of an interesting finish, but thankfully the skies above north-west London lightened again.Somerset resumed their first innings on 185 for 8 this morning, in reply to Middlesex’s 283 on day one, and added only 12 more runs in 4.3 overs before being all out for 197. Groenewald was superbly held by Nick Compton when he skied Murtagh to mid-off, from the tenth ball of the day, and Michael Bates was then brilliantly run out by Morgan at mid-on as he tried to pinch a single from the last ball of the 75th over. When Middlesex batted again, Robson played some fine early shots before being caught behind off a beauty from Groenewald for 18, while Joe Burns was also beaten off the pitch by Trego’s seam movement and held at second slip for 10 by Trescothick. After lunch, Compton went skilfully to 30 before edging Overton to second slip, soon after the pacy Overton had detonated Dawid Malan’s stumps for 16 with a searing yorker. Morgan completed an unhappy match with the bat when, after Overton had given him a brief working over, he steered Trego to third slip to depart for a nine-ball duck and a dreaded pair.

Glamorgan feel Ashes effect but tougher times ahead

Glamorgan have announced much-improved results for the 2015 financial year aided by the impact of hosting an Ashes Test

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Mar-2016Glamorgan have announced much-improved results for the 2015 financial year aided by the impact of hosting an Ashes Test.Cardiff staged the opening match against Australia – ending late on the fourth day – which along with an agreement with creditors to write-off large amounts of debt have allowed the club to announce EBITDA (earnings before interest tax depreciation and amortisation) of £1,201,119. The equivalent figure for 2014 was £579,297, with an operating loss of £88,237.But Glamorgan’s chief executive, Hugh Morris, warned that the allocation of international matches in future years would render it difficult to maintain such figures and called upon the support of spectators to help the club deal with the likelihood of “a much reduced profit.”Glamorgan hosts two ODIs this season – one each against Sri Lanka and Pakistan – and a decent array of limited-overs matches in future seasons. But there are no further Tests allocated for the ground at present.”We are pleased with these financial results which reflect the hard work that went into successfully staging the first Investec Ashes Test match, driving incremental revenues across the business and good discipline around the control of expenses at the club,” Morris said”However, we must acknowledge that our programme of major matches in 2015 will not be repeated in 2016 which combined with the ongoing need to invest in our venue, our professional team and our community projects, is likely to lead to a much reduced profit.”Crucial to Glamorgan’s survival was an agreement reached with creditors to write off around 70% of the debt that threatened to drag the club under. In all, creditors including former chairman Paul Russell, Allied Irish Bank and Council agreed to write-off around £11,500,000 in debt.”The completion of the financial restructuring is a watershed moment for the club,” Glamorgan treasurer Hamish Buckland said. “It has been a tough journey from the difficult days of 2011, but we now have a firm financial base from which to move forward. Much work still needs to be done to continue to improve financial performance in a tough and competitive market, but the foundations have been built.”The club also hopes to develop its non-cricket business. They recently won permission to host up to three major concerts at their ground each year, with Simply Red the first to appear in July.”The staging of music events, the continued success of our year-round catering and events business and the growth of our cricket membership and following will be critical if we are to stay on track in the years ahead,” Morris said.”First and foremost, we are a cricket club and we continue to rely on the support of our members and ticket buyers who are absolutely critical to us.”We’ve added to the squad during the off-season and we’ve got a new head coach in Robert Croft who is determined to build on the progress we have made in the last couple of seasons.”That should be an exciting proposition for Glamorgan supporters and we are looking forward to the new season with great optimism.”

Batsmen need to adapt better – Farbrace

Paul Farbrace, England’s assistant coach, has admitted the team had put in a disappointing batting display against Afghanistan but praised the application that allowed them to emerge with a 15-run win in Delhi

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Mar-2016Paul Farbrace, England’s assistant coach, has admitted the team put in a disappointing batting display against Afghanistan but praised the application that allowed them to emerge with a 15-run win in Delhi.England have won two games in a row, in wildly differing circumstances, after losing their opening match with West Indies and still have their sights set on a semi-final spot. Having chased down 230 to beat South Africa in Mumbai on Friday, England stuttered to 142 for 7 against Afghanistan but put in an improved bowling display to secure victory.”We can talk about a developing team, a team lacking experience, but it’s also about winning and I think that the character we showed in the second half of the game was excellent,” Farbrace said. “I thought we showed really good character.”But we were very disappointed with the way that we batted. There’s no fudging that. We didn’t adapt to the conditions. We didn’t work out that the ball was skidding on and played for turn that wasn’t there. The Afghan bowlers bowled in the right way, they bowled wicket-to-wicket and encouraged us to hit across the ball. We did, and lost wickets.”There certainly will have been a decent discussion at the end of the game, and there will probably be more over the next couple of days, through practice, leading up from Saturday. We know we’ve got areas to improve, we’re not going to hide behind anything. We’ve got to keep working hard on our all-round game. We’ve played half a game again, but we have won which is the most important thing.”England’s fluctuating form has reflected their inexperience – both of international cricket and the conditions in India. Their final Group 1 match will be against Sri Lanka on Saturday, with a win required to give them a realistic chance of reaching the last four. While Sri Lanka are the defending champions, they are also rebuilding after the retirements of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, as well as the loss of Lasith Malinga to injury. Farbrace was in charge when they lifted the trophy in 2014, while England coach Trevor Bayliss has also been at the helm with Sri Lanka, and they will not be taking the challenge lightly.”Sri Lanka have got some high-quality bowlers,” Farbrace said. “[Rangana] Herath would have loved to have bowled on that surface, so he’s someone we’re going to have to prepare and practise well for for Saturday. [Tillakaratne] Dilshan is another one, he skids the ball on. Yes he does spin it, but he’s also a very experienced bowler.”They’re a very good side. In Graham Ford they’ve got a fantastic coach. Angelo Mathews is an exceptional captain. They’ve had a tough little period in the last few months. In Mahela and Sanga they’ve lost two hugely experienced players who have been fantastic guys for them on the field. But they’ve still got good players, and they’re capable of beating anyone on their day, as we are, and as anybody is in this tournament.”Between Trevor and myself we know a fair bit about them and their players, but our focus will be on us and what we need to do and how we need to win the game.”Farbrace also offered words of encouragement for England’s captain, Eoin Morgan, whose first-ball duck against Afghanistan extended his run of middling form in white-ball cricket, with his last ODI or T20 half-century coming 16 innings ago on the tour of the UAE.”In practice – and you’d expect me to say this – he’s striking the ball very well,” Farbrace said. “The one thing that Eoin is, he’s very honest. He’s not someone who’ll be kidding us and making excuses. He misjudged the ball. He makes an error, and that costs you a wicket. But I think he’s been hitting the ball really well, practising really well.”He’s the sort of bloke who is our experienced man, and maybe he feels that in this side he carries a fair bit of weight on his shoulders in terms of experience going into every game. Maybe he feels he has to do more than he needs to, and that’s something that only he knows. But between now and Saturday, there’ll be a decent discussion with him, making sure he’s clear in his own mind how he’s going to play, and making sure that his plans are absolutely right.”

Not too worried about Gayle's form – Kohli

Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli has brushed off concerns over Chris Gayle’s form and is confident the West Indies opener can come up with the runs when the team needs it

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Apr-2016Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli has brushed off concerns over Chris Gayle’s form and was confident the opener can come up with the runs when the team needs it.Gayle has scored 1 and 0 in the side’s first two IPL 2016 matches. He has not scored in double-figures since his 47-ball century against England in the World T20 last month. Overall, Gayle has made 3200 runs in 84 IPL matches, of which 2737 runs have come for Royal Challengers. The batsman also has five centuries for the franchise, including a 66-ball 175* against Pune Warriors in IPL 2013, which is the highest individual score in T20 cricket.”I am sure he will come good at some stage of the tournament,” Kohli said, after Royal Challengers’ seven-wicket loss to Delhi Daredevils in Bangalore on Sunday. “Probably, he may get a hundred for us when it’s required the most. I am not too worried about Gayle, because the other guys are stepping up nicely. Cricket is all about grabbing the opportunity, if some others fail.”Chris takes lot of pride playing for RCB. He has been a standout player for us. I think people just expect a lot out of him every T20 match he plays because he is good at it and has scored 17 centuries, which is not a joke. So, expectations are high and Gayle wants to live up to them.”Despite Gayle’s low scores, Royal Challengers have racked up totals of 227 and 191, against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Daredevils, building on fifties from AB de Villiers and Kohli in each game. With Shane Watson also in the line-up, Kohli believed any of the top four batsmen could turn the match for Royal Challengers.”Well we got 230 in the first match and then almost 200 in this match, without Gayle firing. Guess what would happen when he fires!” Kohli said. “Four guys – Gayle, AB de Villiers, myself and Shane Watson – of international calibre playing in one team, it always helps. You can rely on those four to turn the game for you.”

How do Chelsea avoid following Arsenal into the mire?

The Blues have a number of big issues to address as an abject 2018 put them out of the Champions League and into the crosshairs of their critics

Getty Images1Promote the club's youth-team stars

Antonio Conte has handed debuts to Ethan Ampadu, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Dujon Sterling, but more can be done by the next manager at Stamford Bridge to bring through the club's talented youngsters.

Chelsea's academy is arguably the highest-performing in Europe, having won an unprecedented domestic quadruple last season and back-to-back UEFA Youth League titles.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek is an example of a player who has stagnated by remaining at the club, but if the Blues continue their plans to curb their spending, then a strategy of promoting youth-team stars is one to seriously consider.

A better integration of the top young talent at the club is something they had long hoped to achieve, where the appointment of a committed, long-term manager would surely help matters.

AdvertisementGetty Images2Splash out on a world-class player

Chelsea's last two or three transfer windows have been poor but there is still an element of rebuilding going on from their 10th-placed finish in 2016.

The club have missed out on world-class players as they are no longer at the top of the transfer market, with Manchester City, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain in a position to outbid them.

That rebuilding process has seen many of the older champions leave the club to be replaced by a squad of younger players. They are currently way off the pace to be challengers in England and Europe, and they could do with one or two marquee signings to provide that injection of class.

While the signings of the likes of Danny Drinkwater, Olivier Giroud and Davide Zappacosta added to the options available and bolstered the squad, they need a genuine superstar in the next transfer window.

Getty3Save Bakayoko's Chelsea career

Tiemoue Bakayoko was signed to be a key player for Chelsea this season but he has epitomised his team's struggles in 2017-18 and been something of a disappointment in his debut campaign in England.

After his calamitous display against Watford, he was hauled off in his next start against Leicester City, with fears he would repeat his Vicarage Road display by earning a red card.

The 23-year-old was earmarked to play in Conte's three-man midfield alongside Kante and Cesc Fabregas, but the Blues boss has since abandoned the system to play the 3-4-3 that won the title last season.

Chelsea haven't been able to adapt and, having moved on Nemanja Matic to make room for Bakayoko, they have lost a great deal of quality in midfield. It isn't over for Bakayoko yet at Chelsea, but he will need to show next season that this was just a one-off.

Getty Images4Get Morata firing again

Alvaro Morata's poor form has been a huge issue for Chelsea, with the club having banked on him being their main man.

Olivier Giroud, a player who was deemed surplus to requirements by Arsenal, started the Champions League knockout tie at Barcelona, while Eden Hazard featured in the first leg up front and thus out of position.

Morata's 2018 goal drought was due in part to a back problem, but he has also seen his mentality questioned as his frustrations on the pitch led to a spate of bookings and even a sending-off.

The 25-year-old clearly has talent but he needs to be far more consistent to be one of the world's best strikers.

Conte, Wenger and 10 managers who could replace Lopetegui as Real Madrid coach

Julen Lopetegui is on the brink of being sacked by Real Madrid. So who could replace him at the Santiago Bernabeu? Here are the options…

Real Madrid are currently four games without a win in La Liga ahead of Sunday's Clasico, and if things don't turn around quickly Florentino Perez may be back in the market for a new manager. Here are a few names he may consider in his search…Getty1Leonardo Jardim

It is rare for a manager to be sacked and then land a better job but that may be what happens with Leonardo Jardim. The Portuguese was dismissed by Monaco after a poor start to the season, but his achievements with the Monte Carlo-based club cannot be forgotten.

He won the 2016-17 Ligue 1 title – while also reaching the Champions League semi-finals – developing a host of brilliant players such as Kylian Mbappe, Bernardo Silva and Benjamin Mendy.

His Monaco team was built around young talent and that could be beneficial to Real Madrid. Jesus Vallejo, Martin Odegaard and Vinicius Junior are all primed to make their mark on La Liga over the next few years and there may be no better manager to unlock their potential.

With Real Madrid being one of the biggest and richest clubs in the world, Jardim would be free of worry about his key players being poached by bigger clubs.

AdvertisementGetty Images2Mikel Arteta

Mikel Arteta very nearly became Arsenal manager this summer and a move back to his home country may be in the works before long. Arteta has spent the last few years learning from Pep Guardiola at Man City and if he has picked anything up from him he could become an incredible manager one day.

A move to Real Madrid would be going straight in at the deep end but Madrid do have a history of appointing inexperienced coaches such as Zinedine Zidane.

As a student of Pep Guardiola, Arteta would likely promote an attacking possession-based style which would please Madrid's very demanding fans. One sticking point, though, could be Arteta's history as a player with Barcelona.

getty3Guti

Appointing Guti as the Real Madrid manager would be a huge risk but it may well pay off. Zinedine Zidane was also a coach within the Madrid system before he got the senior job and Guti has plenty of experience in that field.

The 41-year-old coached youth teams for five years before making the move to become the assistant manager of Besiktas this year.

Guti managed Real Madrid's youth side Juvenil A for two years where he was incredibly successful, winning the domestic treble during his first season.

Like Fernando Hierro, Guti is a Real Madrid legend which counts for a lot in terms of respect from fans and players.

Getty Images4Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino has consistently been linked to the biggest jobs in the world over recent seasons and for good reason. The Argentine has transformed Spurs into one of the best and most attractive teams in England, all while on a shoestring budget.

The lack of investment at Spurs will surely frustrate the Argentine and at Madrid he would have a huge amount to spend. The obvious move to make would be for his star man in north London, Harry Kane. Madrid have struggled to replace Cristiano Ronaldo's goals and if Pochettino came in that would be an added incentive for the World Cup Golden Boot winner to make the move away from Tottenham.

The Spurs boss has made it no secret that he would be interested in taking the job, telling the Spanish newspaper “When Real Madrid call you, you have to listen to them."

Getty Images20Luka Jovic: Eintracht Frankfurt to Real Madrid €60m (£55m/$66m)

With one eye on the future, Real Madrid splashed some serious cash to sign Serbian striker Luka Jovic.

At 21, he is certainly a good prospect and scored 17 Bundesliga goals last season for Eintracht Frankfurt.

Jovic is still, however, very raw and has yet to impress for Real, meaning Karim Benzema's starting spot up front is not looking under any threat right now.

A World Cup winner with France, Lucas Hernandez swapped Atletico Madrid for Bayern Munich over the summer to reinforce the Bundesliga champions' backline.

While demanding a hefty transfer fee, the 23-year-old still has his best years ahead of him and will play a key role for the Bavarians this season.

Getty17Dani Ceballos: Real Madrid to Arsenal (loan)

The one issue with Dani Ceballos' arrival at the Emirates from an Arsenal perspective is that he has only joined on loan.

The Real Madrid midfielder has already become a firm favourite with Gunners fans, thanks in no small part to the fact that he racked up two assists on his first start, against Burnley.

Modeste madness! Winners and losers as Borussia Dortmund veteran completes wild comeback vs Bayern Munich

Borussia Dortmund secured a point despite going two goals down to their rivals on Saturday.

Anthony Modeste sparked wild celebrations for Borussia Dortmund with his last minute equaliser against Bayern Munich.

Modeste has struggled in his first term with the Black and Yellow but was excellent here, offering hope that he can yet make an impact along the team's front-line.

Youssoufa Moukoko and the veteran forward ensured a fantastic comeback with their second-half goals to secure the 2-2 draw.

The German champions went two goals ahead through Leon Goretzka and Leroy Sane, but were hardly at their best throughout the match and a way back in for Dortmund always looked possible.

At 17 years old, Moukoko became the youngest player to score a Bundesliga goal in a match between these two teams.

After setting his teenage team-mate up with some excellent work on the ball, Modeste managed to fire in the equaliser deep into injury time to ensure they remain one point behind top spot and level with their fierce rivals.

As for Julian Nagelsmann's team, it is another disappointing result in the German top-flight. Despite their excellent Champions League form, they have won just one of their last six games in the Bundesliga.

GettyWINNER: Jamal Musiala

The Germany midfielder's excellent form continues. He was pivotal once again for Bayern, assisting both of his team's goals.

He now has seven assists in all competitions this season to go along with his five Bundesliga goals.

The 19-year-old has established himself as one of the most promising young players in the world and it is clear that his importance to Bayern will only grow over the coming years.

AdvertisementGettyWINNER: Anthony Modeste

It was a decisive display from the 34-year-old who was brought in to the club on short notice after the departure of Erling Haaland and the cancer diagnosis of would-be Haaland replacement Sebastien Haller.

He did well to hold onto the ball and set up Moukoko for Borussia Dortmund's first goal, and he sent the home crowd wild when he got to the back post and headed past Manuel Neuer in stoppage time.

It will go down as one of the great moments of Dortmund's season as Edin Terzic's men prevented their fierce rivals from moving top of the table and kept the sides level on points.

GettyWINNER: Leroy Sane

"He's one of the best players in Europe, he can add the icing on the cake to any team in the world," Julian Nagelsmann said of the Bayern attacker recently and he showed again why he deserves high praise.

Sane was one of the best Bayern players on the field, even after their disappointing first-half performance. He rounded off his display with a fine goal – his ninth of the season – from distance to double their lead in the second half.

GettyLOSER: Sadio Mane

The summer signing has had an inconsistent start to life at Bayern Munich and this was one of his weaker displays.

Days after having a big influence on the 5-0 win against Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League, he was totally ineffective against Dortmund.

He missed a great chance that was set up by Leon Goretzka in the second half and offered very little going forward for the visitors.

Mane is far from his blistering Liverpool form and seems to be struggling to adapt to Bayern's style.
