Everton manager update on Nuno

Many Everton fans have been expressing their delight as an update emerged on Nuno Espirito Santo.

As per talkSPORT, Tottenham Hotspur have now set their sights on appointing the former Wolves boss as their new coach. The news outlet added that he is thought to be a strong contender for the vacant position at Goodison Park after the departure of Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid.

Nuno’s preferred three-at-the-back formation, which he often deployed at Molineux, may not suit the Merseyside club, especially if it ends up turning into a back five while defending and duly seen as a negative tactic.

Everton will surely be looking to score more often next season, having managed just 47 in the Premier League last term, the fewest by far of any team in the top half of the table (Sky Sports). Therefore, it is not a surprise to see so many Toffees fans wanting him to join Spurs instead.

Spurs strike Marcus Edwards agreement

Tottenham Hotspur have agreed to temporarily waive their Marcus Edwards’ sell-on clause, according to a report from Portuguese newspaper A Bola (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

Edwards made only one senior appearance for Spurs – a 15-minute EFL Cup runout – before leaving to join Vitoria Guimaraes in 2019.

Spurs inserted a 50% sell-on clause into the deal for the 22-year-old winger, who made 33 Liga NOS appearances last season, 21 of which were starts. He scored three goals, provided one assist and averaged 2.2 successful dribbles per game (via WhoScored).

Edwards is currently valued at £9m by Transfermarkt, having been rated as low as £2.88m in April 2020.

The latest

Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon are said to have opened talks with Vitoria over signing Edwards, having been impressed by his performances, but Tottenham’s clause has proven to be a stumbling block in their negotiations.

As a result, the London outfit have struck an agreement with Sporting. They will instead bank 50% of the transfer fee whenever Edwards leaves Lisbon further down the line.

The verdict

Although Spurs could miss out on a decent cash injection this summer by delaying the receipt of the sell-on fee, you could argue that this is a shrewd move from Daniel Levy, the club’s chairman and transfer negotiator.

Edwards’ value is only rising, and the proposed move to Sporting should inflate it even further. If he lives up to the potential he’s showing, Spurs’ eventual intake could easily more than double.

At that point, it would look a very smart decision indeed to forego the sell-on payment for now and instead reap it whenever he moves on from Sporting.

Sri Lanka confident but wary of Pakistan

Sri Lanka’s cricketers carried an air of confidence as they entered the Garnet Room of Hotel Taj Samudra on Monday evening, providing further evidence that all is now well within their ranks

Saadi Thawfeeq09-Sep-2002Sri Lanka’s cricketers carried an air of confidence as they entered the Garnet Room of Hotel Taj Samudra on Monday evening, providing further evidence that all is now well within their ranks. The Morocco win has restored the confidence of the Sri Lankans who were despondent following the beating in England.”We have been slowly gaining momentum since the tour of England. The victories against Bangladesh wasn’t any surprise to anyone, but everyone was looking very closely at us in Morocco because the opposition represented a real test,” said coach Dav Whatmore.Sri Lanka beat South Africa in three out of three matches (including the final) and Pakistan once to win the Cup.”The lads came through extremely well with their performances. The next one (the Champions trophy) is a vital competition but the very nature of it makes it a little bit harder. We think we are up for it,” said Whatmore.Pakistan, he said cannot be underestimated. “On any given day you never know the sort of cricket they can come up with. We’ve seen evidence of that many times in the past”.”They can play ordinary cricket and all of a sudden on their day they can really turn it on. The last time they did to us for in the final in Sharjah. They are a very tough machine when they get going,” said Whatmore.”We are keen to play any opposition anywhere in Sri Lanka and we need to put our best foot forward in the first match. You can never underestimate any team particularly in a one off match where if you lose you are out,” he said. One of the key players in Sri Lanka’s success in Morocco was Aravinda de Silva whose return to the one-day side has given the batting a look of solidity that had been lacking.”Any team that can boast of a player who has amassed close to 9,000 one-day runs is an asset to have in the side,” said Whatmore.”In Aravinda’s case it’s no different. He’s been terrific in assisting individuals in his own way. The very fact that you have a guy who has played that much matches and got experience in the side, adds to that area which is difficult to measure the atmosphere in the dressing room and at team meetings. It is a little bit calmer when you’ve got experience in the team. We are fortunate to have a player like that,” he said.De Silva took two man-of-the match awards with sterling batting displaysand will be the player Sri Lanka will look to play the pivotal role in theChampions trophy.During the conference Sanath Jayasuriya admitted that he was more or less certain to be fit to lead Sri Lanka in the ICC Champions trophy tournament.Jayasuriya has been fighting against time to be fit for the all-important event, which the ICC is hosting in Sri Lanka, after dislocating his right arm in the Morocco Cup final three weeks ago.The manner in which he has recovered has amazed team physio Alex Kountouri who had only admiration for the guts and determination displayed by the SriLankan captain.Jayasuriya still feels the pain after a net session. At least he is happy that he can bat with some confidence and display his repertoire of strokes without flinching. But the injury is still sore and after a batting session against the extreme pace, which the Sri Lankan bowlers can offer, it needs to have ice packs on it.

AVFC: Villa set to make second Smith Rowe bid

Aston Villa are set to make a second bid for Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith Rowe, according to John Percy of The Telegraph.

The Lowdown: First bid turned down

Villa had an offer in the region of £25m turned down by the Gunners for Smith Rowe last week, as reported by David Ornstein.

Arsenal are working to tie up a new deal with the attacking midfielder, who is currently on £20,000-a-week at the Emirates until 2023.

Smith Rowe was a regular under Mikel Arteta last season, making 37 appearances in all competitions. Arsenal have no intention to sell the 20-year-old, but it seems as if Villa aren’t giving up just yet.

The Latest: Percy’s claim

Percy shared the news in The Telegraph’s transfer notebook late on Tuesday evening.

He suggested that Villa are lining up a second offer, as they see a deal worth exploring. They envisage Smith Rowe playing in a front three alongside Emiliano Buendia and Ollie Watkins, with Jack Grealish as a Number 10.

A Villa source told Football Insider earlier this week that an improved bid was being prepared, and it seems as if that is the case following Percy’s update.

The Verdict: How many more signings will Villa make?

Should Villa be successful in their pursuit of Smith Rowe, he may not end up being their final addition of the window.

A club-record move for Buendia is completed, as is a return for Ashley Young. James Ward-Prowse has been linked with a move to the Midlands, while Tom Heaton is set to depart next week.

Bjorn Engels has also sealed a move to Royal Antwerp, so a new centre-back and back up ‘keeper could possibly join Smith Rowe and Ward-Prowse through the door.

It’s been a busy few weeks for Villa, but it’s good to see the club getting their business done early.

Rangers look set for Connor Goldson boost

Recent reports have claimed that Connor Goldson is set to sign a new deal at Rangers despite interest from West Ham, which would be a huge boost for Steven Gerrard at Ibrox this summer.

According to Football Insider, the 28-year-old will sign a new contract at Rangers before the transfer window shuts after negotiations stalled in April, although David Moyes’ side are still said to be keen on the former Brighton defender.

Goldson was in superb form for Gerrard’s side last season, playing every single minute in the Premiership, contributing four goals and two assists in the top flight. He was a huge part of the incredible defensive effort which saw the Bears concede just 13 goals in 38 league matches, helping Gerrard’s side register an unbeaten season as they comfortably won the title.

It is no surprise that he is attracting interest from the Premier League, and with his current contract set to expire at the end of next season, Rangers may well have been forced to cash in on the centre-back this summer had they failed to agree on a new deal.

Fortunately for Rangers fans and Gerrard, it now seems as if the 28-year-old’s future lies at Ibrox, where he will likely be a key player once again next season as they look to defend their Premiership title whilst also competing in the Champions League.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Rangers transfer rumours and news!”]

Since joining from Brighton in 2018, Goldson has gone on to make 162 appearances for Rangers, so it is clear that he is a hugely important member of Gerrard’s squad, and it is undoubtedly good news that he looks set to extend his stay for a few more years.

The 41-year-old manager is clearly a big fan of the powerful centre-back, as he was full of praise for him last season, saying: “Connor has been an absolute mountain for this team, a true warrior.

“He’s had a lot of stick over the years, wrongly in my opinion. But he’s continued to improve and has been one of our most consistent players. I wasn’t too happy with the backline in Belgium on Thursday but if you look at the big picture, Goldson has been absolutely immense.”

Therefore, if the £6.75m-rated defender does indeed sign a new deal in the coming weeks, then it will come as a massive boost to Gerrard.

Steve Bull on what Bruno Lage needs to succeed at Wolves

Steve Bull has told Football FanCast that Bruno Lage will only succeed as Wolverhampton Wanderers’ head coach if he is given money to improve the squad this summer.

Former Benfica chief Lage was named as Nuno Espirito Santo’s successor last month.

Nuno, who has since been appointed as Tottenham Hotspur’s boss, left by mutual agreement at the end of the campaign after Wolves finished in a disappointing 13th in the Premier League standings.

Lage, 45, has moved quickly to bolster his squad, with 20-year-old defender Yerson Mosquera joining from Colombian outfit Atletico Nacional and exciting winger Francisco Trincão joining on a season-long loan – including an option to make the move permanent – from Barcelona.

However, club legend Bull insists further reinforcements are needed if Lage wants to thrive at Molineux.

Bull also admits he was unaware of the Portuguese Lage before he was being touted as a potential candidate for the top job at Wolves.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Bull said: “I knew absolutely nothing about him. It’s the same as when Nuno came in. Who knew what Nuno was about? Nobody knew.

“Foreign managers come over and they want to stamp their mark on the Premier League. You’ve got to give him a chance but it all boils down to what they give him to spend.”
